@mooseutoo Do it yourself with some cheap stones, diamond rods and sandpaper (preferrably in the higher grits, 900-1500, for finishing work), strop it up, and it's awesome, for nothing more than the price of a bit of hard work. If I can make my BK2 be as sharp as a straight razor with those simple, and relatively cheap, materials, I'm sure you can too. Just takes practice.
@theNewCodingFrontier No, you don't NEED a grinder, it would be nice, but sandpaper works just fine. That is what the cheap stones are for, they are gritty, and remove lots of metal, and the fact that they are cheap allows you to seriously grind on them, because they are cheap. The diamond rod, is for sharpening, not grinding, then you move to the high grit stuff to finish, and strop to perfection.
@theNewCodingFrontier I don't know what the "Razor's Edge" is, but even if it is cheaper, I am odd. I do not like other people messing with my stuff, as I can get the results that I want. Plus, I find sharpening quite therapeutic and relaxing, so either way, that is always going to be MY preferred method.
@MrWasabistyle I know 3 things about you already. You swear incessantly, you call a very experienced survivalist a jackass because he keeps his blades lubricated, and you cant spell. Now do those sound like outdoorsmen's traits? :)
Why not just simply get youself a hatchet to do that chopping? You use way less calories, and your fire is made so much sooner! Machete's are made to slash shrubbery and undergrowth, not chop wood! Nutnfancy, what was the point? Is 'hatchet' and 'axe' dirty words in the outdoors community over there?
@goldenscales agreed. I recently got back from a week course of northern bushcraft and hatchets and axes are wonderful things. We used them and 4" scandi knives mostly.
I think machete type blades are quite useful in places like tropics though.
Whats the best way to sharpen the edges on the machetes, as they ship dull.. Just bought a gerber gator machete, was'nt sharp at all when i got it but I still managed to down a huge ass tree .. Lol.... ?????
@nhia34 Hey, I saw him do this in some other videos. I think it prevents sap from sticking to the blade, making it easier to keep clean. Also I think it cuts down on friction when he batons.
I tried my 1 out last week and was amazed how good a chopper it was. I also tried out 2 kukris from kukri house , a condor golok , a cold steel 24 inch latin machete and a tramontina machete. They were all excellent choppers. I think I made some good choices.
I have to watch Nutn's video's at least twice. The first time I have to turn on music and I dance and just watch the blades. Then I get myself together, put my glasses on and absorb the just wonderful informative commentaries. Bravo Nutnfancy, I'm a huge fan my friend. I've bought 4 knives so far just because of your reviews and stayed away from others as well.
@avhousebitch Not really, I just sharpen as thin as I can for better cutting. If it starts denting or chipping, I'll move back up to 20, but so far so good.
I started rebeveling my machetes to 15 degrees/side and found the durability is fine for wood cutting around the yard, up to 4" diameter wood. I will probably move down to a 10 deg/side edge just to see what will happen. And naturally, if that works, its down to 5 deg/side. I couldn't fine the bowie, but the barong, kukri, and panga machetes work fine, though the panga is a little thin.
ok i have a few questions/comments. i honestly think that the regular edge on this knife was shitty-good thing that you did a better grind. some things that you did were stupid on the other hand. why would you put an edge on the top of blade? seriously, i saw your other video and you said it could be for "self defense." how often do you get attacked? and when you do, do you have this knife on you? and also, you're batoning with a very thin blade, and putting the top edge restricts the batoning.
A survival knife should be much smaller than that, look at any expert survivalist, and they will have a knife around 8in total. big does not mean better.
hey veri, i was wondering can you ship your knifes to razors edge so that they will sharpen it?because i live in houston and RE is in salt lake city.also thx for the vids. keep up the good word nutn!!!!:)
@5tonyvvvv Depends what you need... Depends what steel you need, what style of blade, i.e. width, length, point strength, belly depth and overall strength of the knife blade.
@shanehulick - It actually offers pretty good protection. I use it exclusively in my RC nitro engines to protect it from the moisture attracted by the fuel. Just spray on a thin film, wipe it doewn a bit and you are good to go. It will keep the water off your blade.
hey nutn and veri, thanks alot for all your videos and and responses. veri theyre very helpful. not only to the person your answering but to many other people reading the comments maybe wondering the same question. you do a great job responding to them! if either of you have the opportunity to give some input on which knife would be good for wood splitting and batoning? one that is durable and can do some good splitting? any help would be wonderful. thanks!
Nutn, I'm low on money, about $100, and I don't know what to get. I want to get a good knife that will last me, but I want to have money left over for survival gear. Any advice? Thank.
@TheWaggaBloke - Yes he is splitting wood. But the act of hitting the knife through the log with another log is called batoning. He is splitting the log by batoning through it. Just like you drive a car by steering it.
@TheWaggaBloke it's called batoning because you use a baton (usualy another piece of wood) to hit the spine of the knife to help it split the wood. if it was the knife doing all the work THEN it would be splitting.
Hey Nutn, or should I say Veri? I'd really appreciate your input on something. I'm about to buy a machete and thought the Cold Steel Magnum Kukri was perfect, then I saw someone mention Ontario machetes, and looked into them. CS uses 1055 while Ontario uses 1095. I just watched all your lean-to and fire-making videos, and was worried to see that Bench Made chip while you were processing wood. Basically I'm asking what you'd go for between CS and Ontario, machete-wise. Thank you for the videos!
@ButtPoopWiggle Darn, I got your answer, then it took me forever to find your question again, Wiggle. Sorry. Nutn says Ontario machete. Rumors are that latest steel used in CS machetes makes Ontario the one to pick. Hope that helps, and I enjoy your comments! -- Veri
@wilcox1219 ive just had bad luck with the two i bought. i bought two latin machettes at the same time. one snaped in half and the other the handle broke, and bent. the only things i did with them was cut wood and light to medium yard work. My ontario machettes rock and never bend or break. i have my fathers from the vietnam war and it still cuts great so ontario all the way.
I work in an enviorment that is very thick with cane, trees(not very thick, bout 2-3' in diam), and brush... and we have to cut thru this mess to get our job done.. we have tried cold steel machetes and some others, all work great when sharpened properly, but I prefer the thinner profile with 22-23' machetes because of the contionus swinging over an 5-6 hr period. And if properly maintained they work great cutting thru wood, brush, and cane
More than likely around $15 or so just for a simple sharpening. To have a blade re-profiled... really just depends on what you want to have done, and the shop/person you take it to.
because from what i'm told the edge that comes on it is terrible. It would be easier to maintain a sharp blade that someones done professionally than sharpen one out yourself. I'd prob mess it up and it would be quicker if I just got someone who knows what they are doing.
well, for the machete it would cost $35~ and for the professional re-profiling of the blade $30-40 + taxes i would say that over all its not worth it....
i have a BUCK 119 Special and it works great, it only has a 6" blade, but its not size that matters... the blade is perfectly profiled for cutting hard materials, and it keeps an edge for a LONG time, its fixed full tang blade made from 420HC steel.
cold steel will be $70 if you want to make it good, the BUCK will be $100~ and last forever.
didn't realise it would cost than much. Had a look at the buck 119 and yeah its a sweet knife. I recently bought a becker bk 2 and had it shipped from america. Its perfect for my needs and will hopefully last a long time. I'm only getting the 12' bowie coz i want a large bowie knife and don't wanna fork out for a ka-bar. I read that machetes are soon to be illegal over here so I wanted to get one before the laws change.
I knew you'd be tellin' us to get this knife and you know what, that's what I did. 3-5 business days, total $19 including S&H. I'mma test it out for myself WITHOUT any extra sharpening whatsoever to see if it "cuts it". Probably won't. But I'mma do a home job on it if it doesn't. I'm a total novice at all of this stuff, but maybe I'll surprise myself.
Youtuber Colhane has some really good videos about sharpening, modding and using a machete. He spends a lot of time in the Amazon rainforest so he probably knows his stuff. He (and I) advocates the use of a convex edge instead of a steep scandi grind for the chopping part of the blade.
The convex edge has more metal behind the edge and is less apt to nick or fold over.
why does everyone say that the cold steel machetes come with a horrible edge? today i handled a brand new 12" bowie machete and a magnum kukri machete and they both had a scandi grind on them. and the bowie machetes edge was good. y does everyone say that they stink?
I think people say the edges stink because they think the machetes should come with a knife edge for cutting and slashing when machetes need the edge they have for the hacking. I think people just are ignorant of knife blades and types.
Great! He's 9000 ft up on a mountain..you gonna tote the axe for him along with all the gear he reviews? The point IS, you don't HAVE to carry a heavy ass axe up there to get the same thing done. For that matter, you don't have to drag a chainsaw around either. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
There is no free lunch. Some people prefer carrying 25-35 oz (sheath included) axes, because they can get the wood processed with half the energy and time. I don't understand why you are jumping on these guys for stating their personal preference. I'm pretty sure they realize that a knife weighs less than an axe. Where did they specify the axe had to be "heavy ass"?
You gonna leave the knife behind? How you gonna clean fish/game? No, you'd add the axe ON TOP of the other weight in your backpack, including the knife. My point stands. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
You ever cleaned a trout with a 12" survival knife you just chopped a full nights worth of wood with? How'd it look when you were done? I pack a 4" knife and a 14" axe. It works well for me.
The GB 14" axe I was referring to is 35.2oz with sheath. That is under 2 pounds, not the 4lbs (splitting?) axe he used. He is talking about an axe vs saw/knife. My post was about axe vs knife, and personal preference in mobility vs firepower. Axes DO process wood faster and easier than a 10"-12" knife for a SMALL weight increase. Knives are high energy in use. Axes are efficient in use. To some, the extra pack weight is worth it. To you it isnt. That doesn't mean they are wrong.
That's all well and good, but when people say "just use an axe", they're not stating THEIR preference, they telling him what HE should do. He's stated repeatedly why he does what he does..apparently on deaf ears. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
Also, if you have anymore questions about why Nutn doesn't consider an axe a good survival/backpacking tool, he did an opinion piece on the whole conundrum , "Is the Axe the Best Survival Tool?". It explains quite consisely why "just take an axe" doesn't cut it (pardon the pun). -- Veri
Neither I or the OP, said "just take an axe". Nutn doesnt just take a big knife. He takes a saw (and a small knife) too. I'm not suggesting that an axe replaces a saw. I'm saying that big knives are inefficient for processing wood.Their is a trade off for the lighter pack weight ("No free lunch"). The entire video you reference is him chopping through a log with a junk axe and saying a saw would work better. So?
They were stating THEIR personal preference. I didn't realize the comments section was only for "Good job 5/5" or "Another great video Nutn" (which it was).
Oh here we go. You can look in ANY one of Nutn's videos and see that he gets criticism and differences of opinion in them all. So enough of that...now you're just pouting. -- Veri
The axe thing is ridiculous. Anyone who is saying "just use an axe" has missed the whole freaking point. Lemme quote Nutn here and say, "Also for those armchair warriors would criticize my technique, choice of axe, stance, location and other "mistakes" like that: please get out of your easy chair and go make your own videos showing your skills and philosophies in high mountain areas after backpacking your axe in like I did and on a similar sized tree. Talk is cheap."
You mean, Ray Mears of, "In our Fundamental Bushcraft course we make extensive use of the knife and the small folding saw, neither of which weigh very much but offer us great utility while on the trail..." fame? that Ray Mears? -- Veri
Yes. Obviously you just googled the name, because the knife he is referring to is a small pukka knife. You keep posting comments that infer i have something against a saw. I dont. He is a strong proponent of a small axe. The "Ray Mears Bushcraft Survival Series" DVD explains this. Search YouTube for "Ray Mears Bushcraft - Choosing and Using an Axe" for a clip of what I mean. Great example of the efficiency and proper use of a small axe.
We're not talking about profiency and proper use of an axe. That's exactly one of the reason Nutn does NOT recommend them, because they are inherently more dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. -- Veri
Nice dodge of the issue I'm talking about (efficiency of use vs pack weight), but improper technique with a large knife is very dangerous. I believe Nutn addresses that in almost all of his vids about large choppers.
Look, we've basically covered every inch this, and we're pretty much back to square one. People are entitled to their opinion, and so is Nutn. When viewers express their desire to use an axe, as you can see below us, its perfectly legit and acceptable. But to watch the video and say, "just use an axe" is disallowing all the reasons he stated that he does not do that. And why. Nice talking to ya. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
So now your argument is that big survival knives are for people who lack the will or intelligence to learn proper axe usage? My ego would like to buy that but I doubt that is Nutn's point of view.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If I have misunderstood, then I apologize. That's what I gathered from your statement and I dont know how else it could have been interpreted. I'm not trying to make a career out of this and I am more than happy to stop. Nice talking to you too. Goodbye.
I agree with you, an axe is favored in the type of woods i live around way over a large knife. But nutn is a knife guy, he uses them, and just doesn't feel the need to use an axe.
Yes I'm think the same as you; 'he do that so much faster with a good axe', but he doesn't want to use one, for whatever reason.
My thinking is just use whatever is easier, and that is why I carry a small axe(not a hatchet).
Thanks man. He prefers a knife and that's fine. I guess I was more trying to stand up for the idea that people who carry an ax backpacking aren't ignorant for doing so, just take a diff approach. I didn't mean for the whole thing to turn into a big debate. Guess I'm also afraid a lot of kids see this and get the idea that these 10"-12" Rambo knives are gonna be some "one knife solution" for them, instead of a just a lighter weight wood processor. Guess they'll find out on the trail.
Well i agree with you on preferring an axe, and in my opinion, learning how to use an axe properly is a better skill to have than most any other.
However, I would like to try one of these big belt knives for processing wood and the like, and I see no reason why you cannot carry one on your belt, and axe on your pack, and a couple smaller knives, one around your neck and one in the pack.
I hear ya. I prefer a .45acp on my belt but I have heard good things about the Kukri style of the same machete as in the video. You might check that out.

ButtPoopWiggle 1 year ago
@ButtPoopWiggle Darn, I got your answer, then it took me forever to find your question again, Wiggle. Sorry. Nutn says Ontario machete. Rumors are that latest steel used in CS machetes makes Ontario the one to pick. Hope that helps, and I enjoy your comments! -- Veri

@faction69 I don't mind the Cold Steel Machete's... They are good Sellers for me But I do Agree, I love the Ontario 1095 Machetes.
wilcox1219 1 year ago

And if properly maintained they work great cutting thru wood, brush, and cane

does anyone know how much it would cost to get a knife like this sharpened professionally?
OBrien19 1 year ago
@OBrien19
More than likely around $15 or so just for a simple sharpening. To have a blade re-profiled... really just depends on what you want to have done, and the shop/person you take it to.
mememe123xyz 1 year ago
why wouldn't you just LEANR to sharpen a knife profetionaly?....... its not realy that fucking hard.........
b1ackm3ssiah 1 year ago
because from what i'm told the edge that comes on it is terrible. It would be easier to maintain a sharp blade that someones done professionally than sharpen one out yourself. I'd prob mess it up and it would be quicker if I just got someone who knows what they are doing.
OBrien19 1 year ago
well, for the machete it would cost $35~ and for the professional re-profiling of the blade $30-40 + taxes i would say that over all its not worth it....
i have a BUCK 119 Special and it works great, it only has a 6" blade, but its not size that matters... the blade is perfectly profiled for cutting hard materials, and it keeps an edge for a LONG time, its fixed full tang blade made from 420HC steel.
cold steel will be $70 if you want to make it good, the BUCK will be $100~ and last forever.
b1ackm3ssiah 1 year ago
didn't realise it would cost than much.

Affliction4evr 2 years ago
I knew you'd be tellin' us to get this knife and you know what, that's what I did. 3-5 business days, total $19 including S&H. I'mma test it out for myself WITHOUT any extra sharpening whatsoever to see if it "cuts it". Probably won't. But I'mma do a home job on it if it doesn't. I'm a total novice at all of this stuff, but maybe I'll surprise myself.

its a nice knife but i hate the way the handle looks
yiffy4ever 2 years ago

SlayerSokka 2 years ago
I think people say the edges stink because they think the machetes should come with a knife edge for cutting and slashing when machetes need the edge they have for the hacking. I think people just are ignorant of knife blades and types.

I like using knives to split, its lighter and more compact than a medium axe.
tho $20 for that knife isnt bad at all, I tend ot have free knifes that do htat also because I forge and heat treat my own to fit the job I need.

Great! He's 9000 ft up on a mountain..you gonna tote the axe for him along with all the gear he reviews? The point IS, you don't HAVE to carry a heavy ass axe up there to get the same thing done. For that matter, you don't have to drag a chainsaw around either. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
nutnfancy 2 years ago
There is no free lunch. Some people prefer carrying 25-35 oz (sheath included) axes, because they can get the wood processed with half the energy and time. I don't understand why you are jumping on these guys for stating their personal preference. I'm pretty sure they realize that a knife weighs less than an axe. Where did they specify the axe had to be "heavy ass"?
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
You gonna leave the knife behind? How you gonna clean fish/game? No, you'd add the axe ON TOP of the other weight in your backpack, including the knife. My point stands. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
nutnfancy 2 years ago
You ever cleaned a trout with a 12" survival knife you just chopped a full nights worth of wood with? How'd it look when you were done? I pack a 4" knife and a 14" axe. It works well for me.
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
The GB 14" axe I was referring to is 35.2oz with sheath. That is under 2 pounds, not the 4lbs (splitting?) axe he used. He is talking about an axe vs saw/knife. My post was about axe vs knife, and personal preference in mobility vs firepower. Axes DO process wood faster and easier than a 10"-12" knife for a SMALL weight increase. Knives are high energy in use. Axes are efficient in use. To some, the extra pack weight is worth it. To you it isnt. That doesn't mean they are wrong.
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
That's all well and good, but when people say "just use an axe", they're not stating THEIR preference, they telling him what HE should do. He's stated repeatedly why he does what he does..apparently on deaf ears. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)
nutnfancy 2 years ago
Also, if you have anymore questions about why Nutn doesn't consider an axe a good survival/backpacking tool, he did an opinion piece on the whole conundrum , "Is the Axe the Best Survival Tool?". It explains quite consisely why "just take an axe" doesn't cut it (pardon the pun). -- Veri
nutnfancy 2 years ago
Neither I or the OP, said "just take an axe". Nutn doesnt just take a big knife. He takes a saw (and a small knife) too. I'm not suggesting that an axe replaces a saw. I'm saying that big knives are inefficient for processing wood.Their is a trade off for the lighter pack weight ("No free lunch"). The entire video you reference is him chopping through a log with a junk axe and saying a saw would work better. So?
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
They were stating THEIR personal preference. I didn't realize the comments section was only for "Good job 5/5" or "Another great video Nutn" (which it was).
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
Oh here we go. You can look in ANY one of Nutn's videos and see that he gets criticism and differences of opinion in them all. So enough of that...now you're just pouting. -- Veri
nutnfancy 2 years ago
The axe thing is ridiculous. Anyone who is saying "just use an axe" has missed the whole freaking point. Lemme quote Nutn here and say, "Also for those armchair warriors would criticize my technique, choice of axe, stance, location and other "mistakes" like that: please get out of your easy chair and go make your own videos showing your skills and philosophies in high mountain areas after backpacking your axe in like I did and on a similar sized tree. Talk is cheap."

Dont need to, Ray Mears already did.
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
You mean, Ray Mears of, "In our Fundamental Bushcraft course we make extensive use of the knife and the small folding saw, neither of which weigh very much but offer us great utility while on the trail..." fame? that Ray Mears? -- Veri
nutnfancy 2 years ago
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
We're not talking about profiency and proper use of an axe. That's exactly one of the reason Nutn does NOT recommend them, because they are inherently more dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. -- Veri
nutnfancy 2 years ago
Nice dodge of the issue I'm talking about (efficiency of use vs pack weight), but improper technique with a large knife is very dangerous. I believe Nutn addresses that in almost all of his vids about large choppers.
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
Look, we've basically covered every inch this, and we're pretty much back to square one. People are entitled to their opinion, and so is Nutn. When viewers express their desire to use an axe, as you can see below us, its perfectly legit and acceptable. But to watch the video and say, "just use an axe" is disallowing all the reasons he stated that he does not do that. And why. Nice talking to ya. -- Veri (Nutn's sister)

So now your argument is that big survival knives are for people who lack the will or intelligence to learn proper axe usage? My ego would like to buy that but I doubt that is Nutn's point of view.

If I have misunderstood, then I apologize. That's what I gathered from your statement and I dont know how else it could have been interpreted. I'm not trying to make a career out of this and I am more than happy to stop. Nice talking to you too. Goodbye.
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
I agree with you, an axe is favored in the type of woods i live around way over a large knife. But nutn is a knife guy, he uses them, and just doesn't feel the need to use an axe.
Yes I'm think the same as you; 'he do that so much faster with a good axe', but he doesn't want to use one, for whatever reason.
My thinking is just use whatever is easier, and that is why I carry a small axe(not a hatchet).
spiderpig85 2 years ago
KickRocks5000 2 years ago
Well i agree with you on preferring an axe, and in my opinion, learning how to use an axe properly is a better skill to have than most any other.
However, I would like to try one of these big belt knives for processing wood and the like, and I see no reason why you cannot carry one on your belt, and axe on your pack, and a couple smaller knives, one around your neck and one in the pack.
Problem solved...

I hear ya. I prefer a .45acp on my belt but I have heard good things about the Kukri style of the same machete as in the video. You might check that out.
