  • The Caterham R500 is already on the list and they have faster times than this now as well .I don't know the changes to to this car but the track looks different.cool car but cars like this are about what you can live without.probably great on a track and terrible on the street for daily driving.

  • @mbsnyderc of course but the mondeo or vectra aint so good on a track.

  • csr 260 is factory built only btw so no its not a kit car but all other caterhams (apart from the sp/300.r) are kit cars

  • @DJDrOWNZ RS500 is factory build...

  • Search 9rLvGMb46KY to see a 2:56 timelapse build of a Caterham.

Search W1N6EI0hlnw to see a 9:20 video of our Caterham passing everyone

on a trackday at Nelson Ledges Road Course in northeast Ohio.

We have put 6,000 miles per year on our Caterhams for the past 10 years

including 3,000 miles on one vacation to Texas.

They are kit-cars since self-assembly is necessary to license them for road use in the US

but they are fun to assemble and fun to drive everywhere and in any weather.

  • Ultima GTR720 12.8 seconds

  • I guess Kitcars are now being tossed up on the list..not really that fitting since this isn't a mass production car..Not impressed by this car..what happened to the ariel atom they tossed off for that reason?..some tool takes the old F1 style, makes it into a kitcar and now everyone thinks this 1manned rollbar with a motor/seat attached is the best.Such a huge joke..let me happily reinvite you to the 21st century..All about money, bend the rules for this car..if it's proffitable.

  • @DON619ST38 what you just said is basically explaining why its so good for tracks '1manned rollbar with a motor/seat attached' is the whole point, lightness

  • @DJDrOWNZ i actually don't mind the caterham,it's incredible for the value..the thing i really dislike is the cockpit in said caterhams.

But like you said, weight to horsepower ratio.

  • too bad the V8 ariel atom was 1:15.1 ;)

  • Well, .2 seconds is .2 seconds...and a whole world of difference in the world of racing. Hell, in drag racing wins are often less than .01 seconds. Love the Caterham! Even if a newer, similar car with more tech ends up being faster, the Cat' is still my favorite, being that the design is getting on 60 years old now!

  • The most best thing is that is the CSR version, which is 50kg heavier rofl...

  • @EVERLIVERPOOL Is that the weight of a regular CSR? Because this is a race-oriented CSR260 Superlight, which ditches the windscreen, spare tire, etc, and saves 25kg over the normal CSR260.

  • sorry, but the new record is 1.10.7 by ferrari FXX .... try to beat this

  • @qpqpqpwowowoeieiei the FXX was disqualfied beacuse it used slicks and the car have to be road legal to qualify for the record. The car in first place right now (that is road legal) is ariel atom V8.

  • This is far from the fastest vehicle around the track if it was with road tyres.

The atom v8 and BMW S1000RR in road spec are the fastest approved by top gear at 1.15 and 1.16.1.

  • How can a car that looks like a bathtub, a frog and a cheese drive so well!!

    Truly remarkable

  • did you hear those brakes?

  • @2trips most race cars brakes squeak because of the harder composite metals used, the harder the material used in the brakes the louder or higher pitch the squeak

  • AWESOME !!! Caterham forever!! Funny. at the end of the film, a black bird singing....KRAA KRAA KRAA

  • 0.3 second with racing tyres? Funny. Stig's Caterham use to went on road tyres!!!

  • Holy shit that thing sounds good for a 4-banger

  • stigs lap was better

  • This car reminds me of Midtown Madness 1.

  • To all you people giving other better track times: this video is from before 31st March 2007!!!

  • Ferrari fxx was 1:08 or something

  • True, there is a rule about slick tyres, this record is not valid.

  • No one beats the stig, no one.

  • @SnipeSpace exept Barrichello lol, but then again, was it the stig????

  • @SnipeSpace Um Rubens Barricello Did....

  • @SnipeSpace except Rubens Barrichello

  • @SnipeSpace

    Rubens Barrichello did...

  • @SnipeSpace rubens barichello did :D

  • @MABCME that comment is over a year old o-o

  • the lap reconds 1:16 somthing and the gumperts faster than that

  • the lap reconds 1:16 somthing

  • The new record - Bugatti Veyron SS. 1:16.8

  • hahaah sory the stig is now under 1:17.0 sec

  • now they need to put one of those v8 busa engines in it

  • I think the full option arial atom would shave a second of of this

  • 260bhp, (425 per tonne) -60 3.1 seconds. its a true race car not for a driving to cornwall in...

  • I would love to see the Caterham Levante thing with the V8 or the Ariel Atom 500 go round the track. They would rape!

  • Is he the stig?

  • ya its a fast car

but it really depends on the driver

you could take a ok driver and put him in a caterham

and take the stingand put him in a mclaren slr

and the sting(the better driver) will still win

so the lap time barely has anything to do with the car...it takes the driver to beat the lap time

  • @redghost105 also on the stright ness of the track even if the crap driver got off to a crap start hr could still catch up with the sting

  • That look like doors. Nice pannel on the side. Its self made or an optional?

  • lo he didnt actually time is 1 17. 3 by the ascari

  • also a Ferrari fxx did it in 1:10

  • @stfergus608 But the Ferrari Fxx is not street legal and was running in racing slicks.

  • @zephyrod some fxx`s are road legaj

  • @stfergus608 no, they are not. They were only sold to a select few ferrari customers, and wernt allowed to be taken home, they stayed with ferrari. They were a custiomer test bed in reality, and the same can be said about the relatively new 599XX.

  • @Bushby23 He is right, i have seen a few conversions of the FXX to make it road legal....

  • @RecklessDrift No they cant, its Enzo conversions. Ferrari WILL NOT let anyone under any circumstances drive their FXX's unless it is for a test session for Ferraris benifit.

  • @Bushby23 Wrong, i understand exactly about them not allowing it off a track. But they do exist and were made by Edo Competition

  • @RecklessDrift It was a modified Enzo. Check the internet before you make outlandish claims.

  • @Bushby23 The only Fxx not held by Ferrari is Micheal Schumacher's, and his is black. That is why that car was allowed to appear on Top Gear in the first place.

  • @SkylineBNR34 I am aware of this. What I am saying is that NO FXX is road legal, and that Edo Competition upgraded Enzos, not FXXs

  • @Bushby23 I know they aren't, and that is also the only reason MS's Fxx was allowed, because Ferrari would only let his on that track and only let him drive it.

  • when will top gear put the mac f1 on their track?!!!

that wouldn't get beaten by the r500

  • tell that to a caparo t1

    1:10.6

  • Ultima GTR

    1:9.9

  • i think this =) proves that the driver makes the car =)

  • i would love to see the face of a ferrari or lamborghini owner when you out perform his car in a caterham, love the caterham, simple and fast

  • He wouldn't notice. He'd be too busy feeling up his leather or ... waxing it?

  • Dude... LOADS of cars are faster than a Ferrari or Lambo. That doesnt make them better. Gumpert Apollo is the fastest car on TopGear track these days.. does that make it the best ? Hardly. The Ultimate Aero that americans go on and on about is quick but is it best ? Far from it. Ferrari has currently THE best car int he world with the F430 and they are already out with a new one. Amazing. And if you want supermodel look. There is nothing like an Aston or a Lambo.

  • it depends on what you are looking for, do you want to show off or do you want a adrenaline rush for a reasonable price.

personally i think a sports car is about performance and thrill.

  • Yeah and what performance car isnt quick ? Like you would need more speed than a lower end porsche delivers forexample ? Those are far from the best but fast enough for 95% of people.

  • There is no 'best car in the world', its all down to personal opinions or indiviual aspects of the car, e.g there is a car that has the fastest top speed and there is car that can pull the highest G's through the corners but there is no overall 'best car in the world' :D

  • Ferrari 430 delivers the best all round car in the world. And they are already out with its replacement. The 458. Amazing.

But yeah its a matter of opinion ofcourse.. but within reason. As in.. you cant possibly call a GM Tahoe best car in the world. Thats like saying trees are purple. Thats not a matter of opinion.

  • Dude tell your ideas to an actual Ferrari F430 owner (like me), and he's going to laugh out loudly...

Ferraries break down incredibly often, I had to spend a complete fortune on keeping my car working. I sold it, and now I'm a happy owner of a 911 Turbo. It may not sound as good, or look as good, but it's a much more useable car.

  • I wasnt talking about your car tho. I was simply saying that its a myth that supercars are overpriced crap quality. That was true in the 80s.. but then.. no car was reliable in the 80s.

However in the 90s I lived abroad and we drove F355, Lambo Diablos and yeah I know.. Its probably cheaper to run a banana republic in south america.

  • @BeBarnee you do not own a 911 turbo. stop lying.

  • OMG just please think for a second...

Why would I lie here to people I don't even know, or care about???

I don't care whether you believe what I say or don't, leave your opinion to yourself.

  • on youtube everybody has at least two 430s in their garage... its what the internet is all about ;)

  • @Acid113377 only 2? cmon this is THE internet!

  • @Acid113377 I have 6 F355s, 4 Corvettes, and 17 Buggati Veyrons in my Garage.

  • @cyberhendrix ...and a wet nappy

  • hehe is funny to see, hoy many owners of ferrari are in youtube jaja lol yeahh sure...

  • It's form following function and it is a kit car.

  • No. You can either build it yourself or they can deliver it to you pre-built for more money. Therefore it can be called a kit-car.

  • @Pendemic No, the CSR 260 is not available as a kit car anywhere except in the USA where it is only available as a kit car. Caterham considers the CSR too complicated and unsafe to be assembled and setup by retail customers while in the USA CSR 260's entering as fully assembled vehicles can never be licensed for street legal operation.

  • @Pendemic Search "Caterham 7 CSR 260" to see 9+ minutes of a street legal CSR 260 viewed from the passenger seat with a hand held video camera on a track day at Nelson Ledges Road Course passing everybody including a Porsche GT3 RSR and numbered SCCA race cars on racing slick tires.

  • @Pendemic Only in the USA can CSR's be purchased in kit form. Caterham considers the CSR too complex for owners to assemble and setup. CSR's that are purchased in the USA fully built cannot be licensed to drive on public roads. Intending to maintain reasonably fair competition within classes, CSR's cannot compete in any SCCA amateur sports car racing events. Search "Caterham 7 260 CSR" to see a 9 minute video of a CSR260 on a track day at the Nelson Ledges Road Course passing everybody.

  • @Pendemic where can i look how much a caterham cost, if i wanna build it on my own?

  • @Santadriver

You can go on the Caterham site under "Pre owned" if you want to buy a used one. Or maybe go on the Caterham forums to see about your question; I'm not entirely sure.

  • @Santadriver Google Caterham USA. Typical costs range from around $40K for a bare bones classic to around $90K for a fully equipped CSR 260. Assembly time ranges from around 40 hours for the classic to around 90 hours for the CSR if you know what you are doing. Times can be double or triple if you are inexperienced or just taking your time to savor the experience. This makes a fine winter project since you are not rushed to completion.

  • @Santadriver I bought a used classic (now for sale if you are interested) and drove it for a few years until i knew which model and options I wanted in the car I purchased new and built myself. Caterham now and Lotus earlier have offered 7's in kit form for over 50 years now so their parts are well sorted out and their instructions are clear, complete and concise.

  • Well it's a Lotus 7. It's a classic car, designed by Chapman.

The design isn't static, but some arsewipe who hasn't designed diddly squat worth noting to wander in denouncing it as ugly isn't really going to be taken too seriously...

When your name means half as much as the name "Colin Chapman" does in the field of car design, then come back and call yourself a designer...

  • caterhams are not ugly at all!! they look extremely cool, classic 60´s racing body with those wheels outside the bodywork and modern technology, what else do you need? one of those commitee signed cars??

  • how could the r500 not beat the record then ?

  • Top Gear tested the R500 in mid November (unlike any of the others at the top of the leaderboard) and the Stig just couldn't get the tyres warm enough for his liking. He said it would have been way quicker if he could.

  • I live a few minutes walk from the factory (it's in caterham valley) and whenever i look through the window i always tell myself that if i am successful in life i'll get one.

  • You hardly need to be successful to afford a Caterham. They dont cost alot. I used to live near the Koenigsegg factory when I worked in Sweden. Thats a different matter.

  • you can clearly see that those are not slicks

  • Comment removed

  • is this for real!? the stig must be shit!

  • He didn't beat it by much.

  • That's why the price of it compared to what it beat makes it so sweet. Street legal track cars rule.

  • he still beat it

  • Well the stig still heads both the Celeb leader board AND the F1 drivers board.

  • I missed the tires (a)

  • its not record. its on slicks :P

  • That explains it, thanks :)

  • @teamdiablo and tuned

  • @teamdiablo and tuned, noramal csr's dont produce that sound.

This is certainly a track-only model

  • @teamdiablo its not the record because the record is held by the harrier at 31 seconds

  • DAMN! That's half a second faster than the Stig did in the R500.

  • because when the r500 done the lap it was such a cold day there was no heat in the tyres. however if it was a warmer day the caterham team say it could do it in 1.16

  • And thats true, it would have done it faster. Its such a light car its hard to get heat into the tyres on a cold day. It could have done faster.

    xx

  • slicks..

  • how do you get access to the track?

    nasty brakes lol

  • Cool, but I wouldn't like to roll a caterham

  • what i think everybody is for getting is that the caterham cost a fraction less then all of those other super cars up the (with the exeption of the arial atom) and on top of that u can order a kit car version and put it together your self or buy one premade but the point im trying to make is that they start at like 28k and go up to somewhere between 40k and 50k not 100k to like 250k like some of the other one's up their

  • Fastest lap on Top Gear track was by a Caparo T1 @ 1.10 something, after that it was an Ultima GTR 720@ 1.12:8. There's an 800bhp version soon too!

  • Lal... U forget the Aston Martin DBR9... 1:08.

But the official fastest record is held by the Gumpert Apollo. 1:17.1

  • You are correct about the DBR9, but that is a racing car and not road legal. To get on the Top Gear board the cars have to be road legal and clear a speed hump, whch the Caparo T1 couldn't. Officially the Gumpert is the quickest car so far, the Ultima GTR was an unofficial test, but it is the quickest car by far and can clear a speed hump!

  • I thought the fastest on the board was a Ferrari Enzo and the Ariel Atom was the 2nd fastest, but i might be wrong

  • It was for a while but was beaten by the mc12 maserati, which is basically an Enzo in a different frock! Just look at the lap record board at the end of this vid, and this is an old vid by the way!

  • oh i thought the Enzo was faster than the maserati.

  • the fastest was a renault f1 car at 59 seconds. this obviously isn't road legal but neither was the caparo t1

  • Caparo T1 is road legal!!!

  • i mean according the the top gear rules of the lap board

  • top gear got sued by caparo, because it does have hydraulic suspension

  • Ye but look at the cost ;)

  • The caparo T1 is FULLY road legal ! and the stig did 59 secs in an f1 car

  • A Caterham will get over a speed bump easily enough. As for not being road legal in America that's no big deal. I don't understand the burn to death comment, worried about sun burn?

  • Nordhorn said that a T1 was road legal. The T1 cannot get over a speed bump. A Caterham, no problem. The Caparo has had several fires during testing (see the Top Gear video on youtube). Very dangerous car.

  • If you look back in the comments I mentioned the Caparo and it's tendency to go on fire...it'd be unfair to call the car unsafe after a development car went on fire. Look at the V10 Audi R8, it ended up a molten lump of metal on the Nurburgring during testing. Accidents happen, especially when pushing the boundaries.

  • Please read your own comment, then tell me how yours was any different from mine.

  • The T1 IS road legal. The one on TopGear didn't have the adjustable ride height.

  • The T1 has been modified, so it can go over speed bumps (you have to press some buttons or so to raise the height of the car). So they should test the revised version and see where it goes on the board.

  • Also see "Jason Plato Caparo T1 crash test fire"

  • What's not road legal in the U.S?

  • The Caparo T1.

  • (by road legal i mean the top gear definition of being able to go over a bump)

  • Yeah same here. I would have thought the F1 car would have been much quicker than 59 secs though. Maybe the Stig wasn't used to it!

  • i'm not all that surprised. maybe they could squeeze a few of seconds off that time with setup changes, but the caparo t1 was designed to resemble a f1 car for the road. (and it's probably lighter)

  • It's been estimated that an F1 car with an F1 driver should do the top gear course in 49secs! Caparo T1? A phenomenal car but it keeps catching fire and suffering other break downs! The fastest track day car no doubt, but give me the new Ultima GTR 800bhp any day:-)

  • the track is very much about straight line speed, the difference in the corners wouldn't make more than a few secs difference (between the caparo and f1 car) i wouldn't be surprised if the caparo has less drag than an f1 car

  • Radical SR8 anyday

  • tom a radical sr8 costs in aus $200,000 plus. classic throttle shop in north syd had one a while back for $175,000 seccond hand, plus you cant drive it on the road in aus. you can get a csr 200 for 140,000 in aus and drive it on the road. this csr 260 doesnt meet emisions here, but still 0-100 in 3.7 for the csr 200 isnt bad. it will be my next car.

  • Thats because the laws here ar bullshit... and car prices are rediculously inflated..

The SR8 is a much better car..

  • with the current nurburgring production crown id say its better than almost anything. i just reckon theyr not a reasonable comparison with each other.

  • a new 500 hp Aeriel atom is coming out

  • Hooray for super-light British sports cars!

  • The r500 is their fastest car but the stig had it with a track at 1 degree.

  • ultima gtr - beats them all

  • true enough. Not a nice looking vehicle though. I wonder if top gear will get one.

  • Not quite...

    Caparo T1 - 1:10

    Gumpert Apollo S - 1:17.1

    Ascari A10 - 1:17.3

  • Quite right.

to be fair though, he did do this lap 2 years ago...

Still cool to see a little Caterham beat a Koenigsegg, Zonda, Mas. C12, an Enzo, a Ford GT, Ascari ...and the rest :)

  • u konw what is strange, the r500 is supposedly, accordin to caterham, their fastest car round a track, so either this guy's faster than the stig, or they're lyin

  • Well the Stig wasn't as upgraded back then and the Caterham R500 had cold tires.

Besides, the Top Gear test track rewards maneuverability over horsepower.

  • true, however, the r500 is supposedly their most manouverable car due to it's even lower weight, and the csr is actually

  • i'd like to see you build any of them in your garage.........

  • stig and caterham? build ur own stig 2 race 4 u. (u can get aftermarket parts too)

  • nice brake squeal. Can I get one with leather and air con?

  • Cant really call that a road car can we though....

  • Well their was actually a mistake here. at the end when it shows the top gear chart it missed out the gumpert apollo that beat the koenigsegg first.

  • Best car hands down... Rather have this than a Bugatti Veyron... IMO id have this or a 911 GT2... Just WOW

  • This is a load of wank, how do we know this is an of the shelf Caterham? If it was done by Top Gear and the Stig then it'd be a genuine time BUT IT ISN'T. Therefore it should be stuck in the race car category with the Renault F1, that did it in 59 seconds

  • Actually Caterham 7's are perfectly road legal

  • MetalicB0x...seriously?! It's a Caterham, it's perfectly road legal - if you look real close, that 7 digit code accross the front is a fucking REGISTRATION PLATE. Stupid Americans don't know a fast road legal car (that can actually get round corners...extremely well) when they see one!!
