John Mayer can smoke Mr. King on the fretboard, but look at the expressions on their faces while they play. Mr. King has EARNED the blues. Mayer merely copies the style. That doesn't mean that his art isn't appreciated. Thanks to him, this style of music will live on and his tribute to the original masters will remind us all of their legends (and his own).

You can see the big difference here between two completelydifferent leagues. BB is so confident of what he is doing (he invented it) that it is intimidating even to old timers like Clapton.
@yosette74 I don't think BB can relate to John's style. At one point he claps, like he's telling him to to keep up with the beat. Then on John's second solo, he kind of plays off rhythm and really fast, but then he falls back onto the beat in a really great way. I just don't think it's BB's style. It's not like either one doesn't have chops or know their stuff, just kind of a generational gap there.
To clarify something in the previous msg of mine... BB still has the boy whipped no doubt who the master showman is here.. JM needs to keep puttin on those headphones, take a step back and slow it down a bit till he can get control he's striving for... ...King has such patience it is amazing. At the time of this video I don't think John had really began to utilize restraint and pacing to the degree that he has recently. He also looks anxious and not as comfortable, as a result his playing seems to be more forced than usual. Check out the Trio playing Ain't No Sunshine at the 2010 Crossroads festival the whole band is flawless and it shows how much John has grow.

John Mayer can smoke Mr. King on the fretboard, but look at the expressions on their faces while they play. Mr. King has EARNED the blues. Mayer merely copies the style. That doesn't mean that his art isn't appreciated. Thanks to him, this style of music will live on and his tribute to the original masters will remind us all of their legends (and his own).

@yosette74 I don't think BB can relate to John's style. At one point he claps, like he's telling him to to keep up with the beat. Then on John's second solo, he kind of plays off rhythm and really fast, but then he falls back onto the beat in a really great way. I just don't think it's BB's style. It's not like either one doesn't have chops or know their stuff, just kind of a generational gap there.

...King has such patience it is amazing. At the time of this video I don't think John had really began to utilize restraint and pacing to the degree that he has recently. He also looks anxious and not as comfortable, as a result his playing seems to be more forced than usual. Check out the Trio playing Ain't No Sunshine at the 2010 Crossroads festival the whole band is flawless and it shows how much John has grow.

Indeed, Mayer would laugh at such nonsense. Nothing compares to Jeff Beck. There are many Mayers, but there's only one Jeff Beck. A true God, a guitar player's guitar player. And don't quote me, Hendrix, Clapton, SRV, Page, Gilmore, EVH, et all agree that Jeff is out of this planet. Mayer went to Berkeley to learn how to play guitar. Jeff Beck was born with a Strat in his hand and like Beethoven knew what to do.

@lapwiz I agree with you on the fact that Beck is a guitar legend. He dominates his instrument for 99%, he would probably kill me or himself if I said 100%. And I also wouldn't call Mayer a pure guitarist like Beck. But I don't agree with you on the fact that there are many Mayers. I think all the guitarist you named have all there own unique style. Mayer included. He is one of the best of the new generation in my opinion.

That is moronic! Anyone can play like Mayer, he himself said so (that all he does is to rip off licks from other giants of guitar playing). Now, nobody sounds like Jeff Beck, nobody can extract the unique sounds Beck is capable of. No serious guitar player would dare say otherwise. Jeff Beck is by far the most original and unique player in the history of guitar playing & praised for it by all the best.

Page and JB were developing and experimenting on other avenues, Page invented hard rock and Led Zeppelin spawn as a new force in R&R history and JB remained as an elite vanguard genius, too complex for popular appeal. That is why JB is worshiped by guitar players, JM is not that. His the pretty CT boy teen girls adore.
