  • Notice how still his head is upon contact, so so perfect, And yeah he isn't really being pushed to hit uncomfortable volley's so his foot work can be a little lazy here

  • See if you can spot the grip shift!

  • @Tennistruth there is none

  • They post a warm up vid because u can't get as close up while he's playing a match

  • Maybe he's warming up and not doing the usual stuff (stepping in to the volley), but in any case, this seems like a poor video to demonstrate proper volley technique.

  • agreed.....why would they post a warm up vid?

  • what you guys are saying will takes forever to learn. What I saw in this video is federer favor his left side more than the right side with the left hand. That means the volley should be stronger on the left side. But federer make up for his right side with footwork like inside volley to make sure it stays in.

In short, have your racquet pointing to your left side. When the ball comes to your left side, swing compact. To your right side, use footwork to hit it over. Be sure to bend the wrist.

  • Fed's footwork is different is almost every shot here. He's not really practising volleying as such, more like just warming up. Learn how to move your feet in volleying from other video's or from a coach.

  • GueorguiJoukov speaks the truth. slice is a totally different action.

  • It is important to notice that he's just practicing at mid speed as he will hit differently mid-game

  • @Pdr00000000 The only real difference in a match that he will have is stepping out/forward more as he makes contact with the ball. There really should be very little racquet head speed, and consequently when stepping forward his wrist will hold the racquet head above the net upon contact.

  • @Pdr00000000 If you have time to set up this is the way, but it changes in a match

  • My coach tells me to not to slice at all on volley but federer does it a bit

  • my coach tells me that too.

but if you're trying to cut the angle then thats when you want to

slice on your volleys, i guess

this is more of a advanced volley...

once you get more confortable vollying

and placing the balls where you want to

  • You slice the volley so that you keep the ball low and in the court.

  • that too you slice too keep the ball low and keep it in the court as well as placement.

  • same

  • lol

  • Does it help

  • I guess your coach is wrong then.

  • The backhand volley has more of a downward swing than the forehand. In many respects, the forehand volley swing is like trying to push a bunch of books off of a table. The backhand volley is closer to a backhand slice from the baseline.

  • ya but its like blocking the ball instead of swinging like a real backhand

  • u slice to put spin. It is really hard to do, u gotta have right timing. once u perfected the basic volley go for touch.. then after u mastered that put slice.

  • You don't slice, you hit it with a downward action.

On backhand volleys, you can give it a tiny bit of slicing action, but you not choping liek for a slice, you hit with a downward path which creates back spin.

  • hitting with a downward motion is slicing it!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Yeah, if you mean by slicing producing a sliced stroke, then yes. Since it has backspin and is hit in a similar fashion, we must admit it could be considered a slice.

But, what I meant is that your energy is not used to slice the ball; you hit forward but with a tiny angle downward.

It indeed produces a slice, but you don't YOURSELF try to slice the ball with your arm action; you rather let it happen. There will be lesser spin than with a baseline slice.

  • True and some of the downward comes from the legs. My backhand volley is just like my backhand slice just a lot more compact. More of the energy comes from my opponent. Although my mid court waist high volley if things set up right has as much spin as my groundie. My slice groudie is also very aggressive since I played in olden days with wood I use to use it most of the time and hit it more like Rosewall relatively flat and took before the top of the bounce and got it on your side quickly.

  • It has happened to all the great players....you can't keep up the intensity forever! Federer did the same thing to Sampras and Agassi when he started on the scene, he is getting older and new blood is biting at his heals.

  • um will i have a question,

I try to volley like this with a purely continental grip and i cant seem to get the same angle to forhands, but if i modify my continental grip a little to the right (righty), i can get the same angle but regular its too much strain... if fed using a PURE continental? or modified slightly?

  • he is using continental.... i guarantee that you feel like changing your grip because you are not sideways playing the shot at the side of you. if you play facing the net and volleying infront you will need to change more around the back of the racket, and you dont want that. hope that helps..... go shaddow swing a few

  • continental grip is the best way to volly

  • i dont know why the -6, I agree, I would like to see it too. i am confused.

  • the fed lvers people cant take the truth

  • it's true.Nadal plays with more committment, they can't take it that federer isn't what he used to be.heck, even i was like that until several months ago.

  • What has happened to Fed lately??? I cannot believe Murray has his number!! He would have killed Murray a few years ago!! Fed may not break Pete's record for slams and that would be very sad for Roger. He should be playing more attacking tennis like he used to. Perhaps his age, 28 this summer, has finally kicked in. Tough to watch him lose when he should win!! Nice video here, Fuzzy!!

  • He still had quite a few incredible shots in his matches during this Parbias open. I think its his lack of motivation, sure age is one thing but.... really, its more of an excuse. Its called yips.

  • he's Safinizing =P (no offense to Safin, hes an amazing player)

  • i love how people freak out that federer isnt winning everything. just stop its annoying, federer is not in a slump, hes just loosing matches in bigger occasions.

  • Madrid, and French Open = a change. He's had his relative downturn. Nadal is on a little downswing; we'll see how Wimbledon turns out. But Fed may be grinding it out a bit more than in the past, a BIT more; but I think Rog's going to be swinging for the fences so to speak now that's he's won RG and tied Pete.

  • Really great stuff. More please!
