Fantastic! Bobby Shew has played with just about everyone. If you've watched TV or gone to the movies in the past 20 years you would have heard him and not know it. His group with Gary Fuller on sax is amazing
I want one :) I wonder who the manufacturer is? Any clue out there? That's both sweet and convenient (although it looks a bit heavy). Serious talent to trade bars with yourself too

I am not so sure I even like this configuration. kind of a cumbersome thing really. it does nothing for me to hear straight trumpet then a few bars with muted trumpet what the hell any way?? I was certainly not moved or impressed by it...To me Bobby would be well served to just play one or the other and concentrate on his music. To me, it was more of a distraction than anything.
@lclaughton , Nice of you to offer advise to Bobby Shew, acknowledged as one of the greats in both lead and jazz playing, that he should concentrate on his music. Words fail me.
@lclaughton LOL, who the hell are you to advise Bobby Shew?? I think it's pretty cool that he can trade phrases with him self, muted, and unmuted. It actually affords him a technique that is musical and engaging, I find. What's next, are you gonna go tell McCoy Tyner to work on his voicings?
@katgirl161 ever heard of dizzy? Miles? James Morrison? You play the trumpet any way you wish so long as it gets the results that you desire. Personally, I play out the side of my mouth, it creates problems with volume, but I have somewhat overcome that.
Playing "wrong" or "right" is a very subjective thing. There are alternate methods to playing ANY instrument that may work very well for one player, but not another. Yes, in general we try to encourage young players to develop "proper" embrochures by not puffing their cheeks. Bobby is one of the world's greatest trumpet players, and has developed breathing techiques that are emulated by many other great players. Judge a player by what you hear, not by someone's opinion of what they do wrong.
@katgirl161 I'm sure there are exceptions, but usually if someone's puffing their cheeks on trumpet, they are playing wrong.
One guy in my class has that habit, he can barely make a sound, and it sounds real messy. It's embarrassing that after 4 years he sounds like someone who started a week ago.
Hello Shewgal. Just to say I had the privelidge of playing bass for your Dad in about 1985/7 (not me in this vid) he was a very nice chap, good fun and very professional. I still talk about that gig today, infact just tonight on a gig in Guernsey. " Breakfast with wine" cheers nigel
That's so cool! I'd be tripping all over myself if I tried doing that. I'd just get myself confused with the switching back and forth between the two bells. This is awesome
I think the name of that tune was Stoppin at the Savoy?? Great playing byy Bobby. Wow Bobby has really packed on a few pounds over the years, I don't think he would fit into that suit anymore lol
i played an instrument at the taylor factory which was a flugel, with a trumpet and you pressed a fourth valve to alternate between the two much like the one played in this vid
Bobby had tons of extra trumpet piping sitting around his studio when he lived in Van Nuys. He could have made dozens of those things if he chose to. It's a cool experience to play a shewhorn. Especially when it's the exact same one as in the video. It was a privilege to be taught by such a genius.
He's using a Jo-Ral bubble wah mute. It sounds just like a Harmon, but without the pitch problems associated with Harmon mutes (slightly sharp intonation). Thanks for posting this video and the Red Snapper also. I love that tune.
Bobby directed the All-State jazz band that I was a member of this past week, and he made it quite obvious to us that he had an amazing set of ears. We could sing a lick, and he'd play it back exactly the same, in the same key and everything. Not to mention his incredible embochure. I'm sure he just compensates for it with his lips.
Hello and I'm not sure if you even care but i recently talked to the man who created this instrument for Mr. Shew. Dave Monette designed and created the horn for Bobby but there is no doubt that he had a very big part in the design process as well.
I am fortunate enough to have played with Bobby a year or so ago. He's phenomenal lead as well as solo. His song can't stop the crying will bring you to tears. That is an awesome instrument.
That looks like the relative of the ecophone. You can find horns like that on ebay. They have a built in mute activated by a 4th valve. Sadly the quality of the horn is not very good.
Yes, 2 great clips by a fantastic player. I recorded these 20+ years ago from a lunchtime magazine programme on the BBC, Pebble Mill at one. These days all you get is the latest pop sensation miming to their latest single.
Oh for the good old days........actually, at the time is was pretty unusual for something like this be on.

He was a clinician for Getzen many years ago, it could have been made by them.
He has been with Yamaha for quite a long time and they make Bobby Shew Signature Trumpet and Flugelhorn.
Or it could be one of a kind made for Bobby by one of the many fine brass techs around he country.

@katgirl161 Are you retarded? You shouldn't 'puff' your cheeks if you have proper embrochure and air flow.
