  • Fantastic! Bobby Shew has played with just about everyone. If you've watched TV or gone to the movies in the past 20 years you would have heard him and not know it. His group with Gary Fuller on sax is amazing

  • I want one :) I wonder who the manufacturer is? Any clue out there? That's both sweet and convenient (although it looks a bit heavy). Serious talent to trade bars with yourself too

  • @jjcantu86

He was a clinician for Getzen many years ago, it could have been made by them.

He has been with Yamaha for quite a long time and they make Bobby Shew Signature Trumpet and Flugelhorn.

Or it could be one of a kind made for Bobby by one of the many fine brass techs around he country.

  • I always admired the way Jimmy Page used a double guitar for Stairway to Heaven, and its good to see there is a double trumpet out there too.

  • What instrumet is this?

  • @mauropagliaroni its called a Shewhorn :-)

  • he played at my college a few weeks ago...wonderful trumpet player....

  • What song is this?

  • @mangafweak Stompin' at the Savoy

  • @lclaughton , Nice of you to offer advise to Bobby Shew, acknowledged as one of the greats in both lead and jazz playing, that he should concentrate on his music. Words fail me.

  • @lclaughton LOL, who the hell are you to advise Bobby Shew?? I think it's pretty cool that he can trade phrases with him self, muted, and unmuted. It actually affords him a technique that is musical and engaging, I find. What's next, are you gonna go tell McCoy Tyner to work on his voicings?

  • @lclaughton Duly noted. I'm certainly not impressed with your grammar skills, but I'll keep that to myself....WOOPS!

  • @katgirl161 ever heard of dizzy? Miles? James Morrison? You play the trumpet any way you wish so long as it gets the results that you desire. Personally, I play out the side of my mouth, it creates problems with volume, but I have somewhat overcome that.

  • this was so coool, usually need to record two tracks now it can be done on one !!!!

    thanks for posting this

    aloha from hawaii

  • Playing "wrong" or "right" is a very subjective thing. There are alternate methods to playing ANY instrument that may work very well for one player, but not another. Yes, in general we try to encourage young players to develop "proper" embrochures by not puffing their cheeks. Bobby is one of the world's greatest trumpet players, and has developed breathing techiques that are emulated by many other great players. Judge a player by what you hear, not by someone's opinion of what they do wrong.

  • doesn't he know that you should puff out your cheeks while you play?

  • @katgirl161 Are you retarded? You shouldn't 'puff' your cheeks if you have proper embrochure and air flow.

  • @katgirl161 I'm sure there are exceptions, but usually if someone's puffing their cheeks on trumpet, they are playing wrong.

One guy in my class has that habit, he can barely make a sound, and it sounds real messy. It's embarrassing that after 4 years he sounds like someone who started a week ago.

  • @meepsquad101 haha wow, major typo. I meant doesn't. sorry about that

  • Hey

    Very good...

  • Is this Stompin at the Savoy?

  • Double Trumpet Horns all the way WOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH

  • Very Cool! Love the sound of both horns. Only Bobby Shew could be so brilliant!

  • Tasty sound and very cool instrument too.

  • Hello Shewgal. Just to say I had the privelidge of playing bass for your Dad in about 1985/7 (not me in this vid) he was a very nice chap, good fun and very professional. I still talk about that gig today, infact just tonight on a gig in Guernsey. " Breakfast with wine" cheers nigel

  • That's so cool! I'd be tripping all over myself if I tried doing that. I'd just get myself confused with the switching back and forth between the two bells. This is awesome

  • i want one. kanstul made one recently for herb alpert, but shew's was made by monette.

  • TOCA MUITO!!!!!!!!!

  • Tthe best' TONE' in trumpet playing. Its all about sound.I really love his sound. Thanks for posting.

  • Does anyone know what that thing is?

  • its a costom shewhorn

  • that thing must be heavy!

  • @WoodDuck14 Yeah, he's a porky guy nowadays... this vid was filmed about 250 pounds ago...

  • @DancingSpiderman no I was talking about the trumpet haha

  • @WoodDuck14 No.... if you're used to marching with a Marching Baritone, that doesn't look heavier than a Melo.....

  • @tsuzuki1227 you marching nerds...

  • WOAH...wait, is that bass player using a pick??

    WTF!

  • Stompin'.......The tune is called Stompin' at the Savoy. And yea, Bobby's playing some beautiful lines here.

  • Wow, that is some smooooooooooth playin'. Slick. Kind of like a cool Cadillac just crusin' down the road.

  • my dad rocks!!!!!

  • Really? Your dad? We caight him playing here in Athens a month ago or so, he was incredible.

  • thank you for the nice compliment...

    : }

  • I think the name of that tune was Stoppin at the Savoy?? Great playing byy Bobby. Wow Bobby has really packed on a few pounds over the years, I don't think he would fit into that suit anymore lol

  • Thats John Patrick on keys and John Mculloch on Bass - not sure about the drummer - maybe John Gibson !

  • i played an instrument at the taylor factory which was a flugel, with a trumpet and you pressed a fourth valve to alternate between the two much like the one played in this vid

  • very good

  • He does a wonderful or complimenting his own playing as playing as two horns. Love it

  • This is the best thing I've seen all day! Rock on Bobby Shew!!

  • thank you on behalf of my dad...: }

  • @shewgal My pleasure

  • ahhh thats what its called, eric miyashiro has one w/ 3 on there... awesome

  • Oh my days! Wow! What? Envy! I am disturbed but oh much I want one of those babies!

  • Oh...My...God...

  • That's the coolest thing I've ever seen!!!!

  • OK - congratz, you just blew my mind.....

  • Stompin' at the Savoy

  • In F :P Isn't it usually in Db?

  • I REALLY WANT ONE OF THOSE TRUMPETS SO BAD!!!!! lolz ^_^

  • the closest ive seen to this is a cornet known as an 'echo' cornet/trumpet which works in the same way with a different effect. ^_^

  • well im going to try my best to get one!

  • Bobby had tons of extra trumpet piping sitting around his studio when he lived in Van Nuys. He could have made dozens of those things if he chose to. It's a cool experience to play a shewhorn. Especially when it's the exact same one as in the video. It was a privilege to be taught by such a genius.

  • wow! that is so neat! never seen a trumpet that you can switch which bell the sound comes out of! thats so cool...I want one :D

  • what the fuck? I've never seen a trumpet like that in my life..

  • he was soo skinny back then. I actually met him in person got an autographed ticket.

  • C-L-A-S-S

  • Beautiful tone!

  • where is the second bell coming out of?

  • the bell underneath the normal one with the mute in

  • that's kind of distracting to the music

  • That's why the changes are simple -- you don't have to think about what he's playing.

  • Nice Trumpet@@

  • i want one....

  • Fantasticoo!!!

  • woot go bobby :O

hes a good friend of the walnut high band music director ~ buddy clements :]

bobby shew is the best trumpet player in the world !!

  • yeah i know, he is going to do a clinic or something. Too bad i dont play the trumpet.

  • lol he was there today for the jazz band concert haha :P he is so pro xD

  • wow that's such an awesome horn lol

  • He's using a Jo-Ral bubble wah mute. It sounds just like a Harmon, but without the pitch problems associated with Harmon mutes (slightly sharp intonation). Thanks for posting this video and the Red Snapper also. I love that tune.

  • It's before the Jo-Ral Bubble Mutes were created. This is probably closer to his Soloist Mute.

  • Bobby is amazing. I've heard him called the "Yoda" of the trumpet, because he is also an amazing educator.

  • bobby shew plays beautifully. i won a private lesson with him for one hour. went to his little place in van nuys! kool guy.

  • hehe hes playing the benny goodman king of swing song :).

  • So is this horn for sale anywhere?

  • Hey urdanien, he switches using a 4th valve.

  • I've never seen a trumpet like this, quite interesting ;)

How does he change the trumpets??

    greets

  • the drummers my grandad! good going.. dont he look handsome with black hair :) ps. the music is good too.

  • how does he compensate for the mutes tendency to be a tad sharp?

  • Bobby directed the All-State jazz band that I was a member of this past week, and he made it quite obvious to us that he had an amazing set of ears. We could sing a lick, and he'd play it back exactly the same, in the same key and everything. Not to mention his incredible embochure. I'm sure he just compensates for it with his lips.

  • I'd actually guess that the bell compensates for it. It'd be quite simple to do and a hell of a lot more convenient for the user.

  • what type o ftrumpet is that

  • Its a Shewhorn, designed by Bobby.

  • @Jazztpt

Hello and I'm not sure if you even care but i recently talked to the man who created this instrument for Mr. Shew. Dave Monette designed and created the horn for Bobby but there is no doubt that he had a very big part in the design process as well.

  • @boarderboy326

Thanks, I didn't know Dave Monette was invloved.

  • i actualy saw him on apri 19

  • how did he get another mute on that? someone plz tell me!

  • i cant believe i saw this guy live last year.. he pwns

  • I am fortunate enough to have played with Bobby a year or so ago. He's phenomenal lead as well as solo. His song can't stop the crying will bring you to tears. That is an awesome instrument.

  • I just love this piece and how Bobby trades fours with himself on his Shuehorn, just love it

  • That looks like the relative of the ecophone. You can find horns like that on ebay. They have a built in mute activated by a 4th valve. Sadly the quality of the horn is not very good.

  • Stomping at the Savoy

  • Yes, 2 great clips by a fantastic player. I recorded these 20+ years ago from a lunchtime magazine programme on the BBC, Pebble Mill at one. These days all you get is the latest pop sensation miming to their latest single.

Oh for the good old days........actually, at the time is was pretty unusual for something like this be on.

  • Now that is a true monette bell over bell trumpet....

  • that's beyond awesome.

  • absolutely brilliant and magnificent

  • Man, I just saw Chuck Findley a week ago. Bobby and Chuck look ALOT alike when Bobby is thin...

  • Interesting to see Bobby Shew 200lbs lighter.

  • Yeah, really. I have photos of him playing in Bill Berry's band at the Concord Jazz festival in 1977. Boy was he slim at that time.

  • I always wanted to see this instrument played! Thanks for posting.
