@DIENAMICProductions dude i love his intros. cool cars esp the stingray! differentiates his videos from all the other stuff int he sea, plus, he is confident on his advice...that is most important.would you go to a doctor that does not speak confidently??!!
in a normal car (without turbo, supercharger, etc..), in a normal driving 'style', you are not to worry with the head gasket at least for 300k. there's no need of doing that. After all if you pay attention to the noise of your engine, you will notice something's wrong before any worst scenario.
thats a 4afe toyota engine. never seen one of them blowing a head gasket. i fitted a lot of gaskitst on european GM cars, opel. vauxhall ,etc ,that engine was fitted to the european toyota carina, they were bullit proff.good vid scotty.
These kinds of cooling system sealers cause more problems thatn they cure. The material sticks to everything in the system and narrows cooling passages which can cause overheating. The best way to prevent a head gasket failure is to NEVER allow the engine to overheat! If the hot light or temp gauge indicates that the engine is hot, stop the car right where you are. Too many people ignore a hot engine since it usually still runs and will get you home, Big mistake.
@jensen1971x I agree with not overheating an engine. But it doesn't stick to everything, and if used correctly in a clean cooling system with fresh coolant it can save a leaky head gasket. I've been using it for decades when customers can't afford a head gasket job.
@scottykilmer While it may save an already leaking head gasket, it does not prevent a leak from happening as you suggest. I have had several cars that have had this "sealer" used and in one it almost fully plugged up the radiator and another blocked the heater control valve. This may be a good stop-gap repair for someone with a cheap "beater" that needs to get a few more miles out of it but not a good idea for newer cars.
@jensen1971x If the cooling system is clean and not corroded, full of fresh coolant, it doesn't clog anything up. but if dirty, yes, it can clog stuff up. and it can keep small holes from ever being noticed by sealing them, so I disagree with the not preventing a leak completely. But, to each his own, I'm just showing what I've found fixing cars for the last 44 years, so I'd value my opinion when it comes to auto advice.
@scottykilmer Maybe so, but I have never seen a cooling system that was perfectly clean and uncorroded in any car with more than 1000 miles. These sealers are formlated to find and block small holes in the passages, even the good ones.Sorry I can't abide by your recommendation and I hope you are willing to guarantee to pay for repairing any cooling system problem anyone has that follows your advice.
@scottykilmer yea i knew a guy that had run his REPAIR SHOP for 40 years but had yet to understand how TBI worked and charged some folks 1200 bucks to fix there car changing fual pumps ect and never got it running and all i had to do was walk over there and see the wires to the injectors unpluged. pluged them in and bam it run simple as that. he was sure happy i stoped by that day. moral of the story is no matter how long you have done it you will never know it all.
I have a question, after installing a O2 sensor after discovering the old one was broken, my 1986 Mitsubishi Starion stock can't produce any turbo boost. 0psi at full throttle. what can't be the reason? is it the ECU? Thanks
hey I have a question. Iv been noticing Oil in my radiator fluid but oil is perfectly clean of radiator fluid. What does that mean? And do you think a sealer will work?
I feel that these kind of sealants cause more problems in the long run. If you maintain and monitor your vehicle, there is no reason the head gasket should leak under normal driving conditions. I would rather replace a head gasket than try to fish out all the gunk build up of the sealer in my coolant system. Even using sealers on a known problem more often than not result in the problem still existing and getting worse. I would rather fix it the right way, not the quick way.
@eatont9999 Ah, but some cars are poorly made and just blow head gaskets from poor designs, such as subarus and saturns. Preventing this is a BIG deal if you own one. I agree with maintenance of course, but in some cases sealers are handy
@eatont9999 I agree, but how many of your friends and family maintain and monitor their cars like you and me? If you don't know much about cars then sealant can be a simple way to extend the life of the gasket with out popping your hood every week to check for leeks and fluid levels.
@DrifterToo everyone's entitled to their opinion, but if you read some of the below comments you'll see some happy people whose cars it sealed leaks. Scotty
hi there you do make some great videos,,and have some cool ideas,, i have tried some leak fix solutions before and always ended up with a leaking water pump, granted rad or matrix stopped leaking, also i thought head gasket failure was normally caused as a result or the chemical reaction caused in the combustion process ,the same process which rots exhaust from the inside out,,granted your solution may stop oxidation , but it wont stop ammonia or electrolisis,, so please explain why,
@5150martin It seals leaks that are already there, but if the coolant is old and dirty, you have to change it out first and put new coolant in. then the chemical reaction can't take place.

@oORaveNOo if that were true, they have similar stuff available but different brands like Bar's etc. My headgasket is fine now, but my engine has 264k miles now and i thought i should put some of these for preventive maintenance
I have the tiniest oil leak, just appears as a film on the block, no spots left in the drive way... I wonder if that means the hole(s) are too big. How did I never hear of sealant, before? Many thanks. Great, altruistic videos.
@fullraph yes, as a preventative measure. they do run tons more pressure than gasoline engines, so once there is a bigger hole no sealer will work to repair it in a diesel. Scotty
Thank you for your info. I have a Buick Regal GS, 1997 and my mechanics said the intake manifold is leaking coolant into oil. Does Steal Seal work for this? Does this damage the performance of thermostat? or block the heating core?
I think it's important to note not to use sealant that has chunks in it for preventative maintenance. I'm talking about the cheaper sealents that use chunks of stuff to mechanically seal a hole.
They will also seal off your heater core, meaning in the winter you will not have any heat. Replacing a blocked heater core, can be almost as expensive in some cars as a head gasket.
Steal seal is good stuff though, and will not harm your car.
Hey Scott I got a 91 civic hb and i had an issue coming home from work. The car was leaking radiator fluid from the muffler when i got home and tried to start it again. I knew it was a head gasket problem. cuz i only used radiator fluid, and it needed fluid from time to time. Some people tell me to replace the engine some say to rebuild or replace the head, but from my standing onn it it has no water in the oil and the engine never leaks oil, I hope is salvagable. what is your suggestion?
@MrLanceuppercut90 try this sealer first, but if it doesn't work, on an engine that old, I'd get one of those low mileage used engines from japan, as I show in my video "Replacing an engine in your car". Scotty
@scottykilmer oooh ok thanks but how about that "steel seal" i only found their website and it goes for 80$
but anyways question when i start my car in the mornings [subaru] cold mornings after 10 seconds or so running smoke/vapor comes out starts light then heavy when it warms its gone for good is this coolant or condensation
help scooty i nned to know why is my car overheating everytime i stop and when i go it doesnt overheatplz need help i checked the fuse are ggod an bought a new radiator and got a new thermostat and i dont knw if its the fan causing the problem or the water pump its a honda accord 1991 the engine has 206,675 miles plz help
I have a question, Mr. Scotty. I've got an 89 s15 Jimmy, with the 4.3 TBI. It's got this issue when i get goin down the road...I'm not sure how to explain it....If i'm barely pushin on the gas, it accels smooth until about 20mph, then it like..looses power real bad and i have to press on the throttle harder...(it sounds dumb, but its not normal) i'm thinking timing/distributor...but i don't wana invest that money into it without knowing for certain..so..how will i know the dist. is bad?
not only cloggs headgasket, but radiator, heater core and everything else...if this was good for your engine, why would it not just be mixed in with anti-freeze?
@hondaslave Some actually do have sealers built in from the factory. And if you don't think planned obsolescence isn't built into cars these days, you're living in a fantasy world. They build em to break these days. Scotty
iv got a Mazda mx6 it over heats in 15min off driving every time i get in it so i stopped driving it will steel seal stop the problem. iv cleaned the hole coolant system when i was cleaning it i found a choc type of water come out off the bottom of the radiator and motor
@DJjamespodcast daughters neon was like that, low oil in pan,all put in the radiator.....chocolate goo......old days it was some water in the pan,so you knew it was a gasket, but I never saw the goo in a radiator like this NEON.......Scotty said it was a head gasket......
@scottykilmer give it a try, but if it doesn't work, you'll have to tear the head off and fix it with a new gasket and PRAY the head's not warped. Scotty
@whole27 it seals the head of the engine with the valves in it to the block of the engine with the pistons in it. If it breaks down, the engine can't run correctly. a BIG deal. scotty
Hi Scotty, thanks for your video. I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville Northstar 4.6 v8 and it may have head gasket issue. I want to know (1) which sealer (brand and product) do you recommend for this aluminum engine? (2) Will it clog the heater core or other components? There are many brands which claim their products free of such a problem, but there are also many complains about these brands. I appreciate if you can give me an answer. Thank you. Eagle
@cnhawkxyy those northstar engines are crap as they age, VERY complex and blow head gaskets all the time. You can try any sealer, but odds are none will work on that crappy caddie design. it will cost you 3 times the value of that car to replace the gaskets due to insane design, so you might try steel seal and if it works, sell it fast. Scotty
Thank you very much for your reply. May I have one more question: How to prevent the sealer from clogging the heater core or other components? Thank you.
You were totally right. Two hours ago my Cadillac overheated on the highway again. It was the second time in this week. This time it scared me off since the engine stopped working when I was driving at 60 MPH. I had not choice but rushed out of the road into the grass ground. Fortunately no one injured. I will return it to the dealership next Monday... Too sad.
hey my cars radio worked fine but now only the fround left speaker work but the speakers are not blown just somehow to geting the connection? any ideas?
@patryklucarz no swearing here. If you would read some of the comments you would know I'm half deaf from working on cars the last 44 years (just had a birthday.) scotty
Hey Scotty, my car overheated last week, took the rad in to be refurbished and is now back in but I am not convinced that there wasn't damage done to the head gasket as now I have white smoke coming from the exhaust. I know that's not definitive and the shop ran a test (the one where the blue fluid turns yellow) and it did not change color, but am still not convinced that the head gasket doesn't have a leak. Should I drop some Steel Seal in there just to be sure?
@scottykilmer Thanks! One more question - sometimes when the car is idling at a red light the rpms and engine will drop for a second, almost as if it is stalling and then come back. It does this repeatedly and gets worse when the car has been on the road for over a half hour. Neither the heat nor the a/c was on at the time and it didn't do this before it overheated. Should I be concerned?
@xyzdorky66 but you get smoother power and better reliability also it doesn't heat up as much... If your gonna go all out and have a bad ass intercooler than thats fine...
What are the most common signs of a blown head gasket? I have been being told that I have a blown head gasket for the last 4 years. However I have not lost any power, and the car is still running great.
But the car just started smoking really bad about 2 weeks ago, and 2 weeks ago I had gotten a radiator flush. The coolent was brown and clumpy. Instead of coolent getting into the oil, can it also be a reversed problem? and still have similar signs?

@KellyEUTAH It can't be blown running for 4 years with no problems. But I would assume it is now, so watch my video "how to find out if your head gasket is blown" and have that test done now. Scotty
Hey Scotty I want to know how much would it be to replace a head gasket?? I mean this is what happened to me a week ago I was driving a standard car and then the car stopped working so I opened the hood and the water was liking and smell burnt so I am guessing that is the problem.. also How much would it be to pay the mechanic thank you and hope you reply !
@xivizz Hey, all cars are different. A toyota 4 banger could cost as little as 500 bucks, a caddie northstar engine could cost 5 grand. Price around in your area for your car. scotty
@scottykilmer hey Scotty how much would it be to replace a head gasket and how much would a mechanic charge for the service??? thank you and hope you can reply back ASAP!! please!!!!!
Respond to this video... hey Scotty how much would it be to replace a head gasket and how much would a mechanic charge for the service??? thank you and hope you can reply back ASAP!! please!!!!!
@xivizz prices vary widely from mechanic to mechanic, and style of engine. Can go anywhere from 500 bucks to three thousand or more on a caddie northstar engine. Scotty
i have to check that out next time im do for a flush iv aleways use royal purple in my collant thats a sealer and helps save your water pump and it ever makes your engine and trans run 5 to 15 degrees cooler when i did my 1999 dodge durango and added it in it droped the temp by 9 degrees and i just had the flushed out less then 5 months before that so it is proven stuff that works i always flush my coolant every 2 years i dont wait the full 3 years
@bluebearbank247 don't know the actual size, cause I'm not superman and don't have X ray vision. but if you have water in the oil or oil in the water, it's too big a hole. Scotty
My personal opinion? On any newer car that I've owned where neither I or any previous owner has used any type of coolant sealant the heater has worked great. drbrutallica 2 months ago
Hey scotty can I use that for a 07 dodge charger rt?
albertort1 2 months ago
@albertort1 yes, you can use it on any water cooled engine.
scottykilmer 2 months ago
What sealer would you recommend?
presario2100us 2 months ago
@presario2100us steel seal is what I use for head gasket leaks.
scottykilmer 2 months ago
I have the tiniest oil leak, just appears as a film on the block, no spots left in the drive way... I wonder if that means the hole(s) are too big. How did I never hear of sealant, before? Many thanks. Great, altruistic videos.
ion010101 3 months ago
Is it good for diesel engine?
fullraph 3 months ago
@fullraph yes, as a preventative measure. they do run tons more pressure than gasoline engines, so once there is a bigger hole no sealer will work to repair it in a diesel. Scotty

Hi Scotty,
Thank you for your info. I have a Buick Regal GS, 1997 and my mechanics said the intake manifold is leaking coolant into oil. Does Steal Seal work for this? Does this damage the performance of thermostat? or block the heating core?
jianzhong794 3 months ago
no it's only for head gaskets. For that type of leak try bars alumiseal. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
Thanks! I appreciate your help.
jianzhong794 3 months ago
Hi Scotty,
Can I use both Bars Alumiseal and SteelSeal? I do not know if the leak is from the intake manifold gasket or the head gasket.
jianzhong794 3 months ago
@jianzhong794 NO, never mix two different kinds of sealers, that will clog stuff up for sure. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago
hey scotty, you say caddy northstars, and subaru grandwagons have bad head gaskets, could you say any others so people know !?!
therockkkkher 3 months ago
@therockkkkher far too many to mention, but those are the worse by far. NEVER overheat those engines. Scotty
scottykilmer 3 months ago

MrLanceuppercut90 3 months ago
@MrLanceuppercut90 try this sealer first, but if it doesn't work, on an engine that old, I'd get one of those low mileage used engines from japan, as I show in my video "Replacing an engine in your car". Scotty

@scottykilmer oooh ok thanks but how about that "steel seal" i only found their website and it goes for 80$
but anyways question when i start my car in the mornings [subaru] cold mornings after 10 seconds or so running smoke/vapor comes out starts light then heavy when it warms its gone for good is this coolant or condensation
erdoganog 3 months ago
@erdoganog time will tell. If you lose no coolant over time, it's just condensation. Scotty

I have a question, Mr. Scotty. I've got an 89 s15 Jimmy, with the 4.3 TBI. It's got this issue when i get goin down the road...I'm not sure how to explain it....If i'm barely pushin on the gas, it accels smooth until about 20mph, then it like..looses power real bad and i have to press on the throttle harder...(it sounds dumb, but its not normal) i'm thinking timing/distributor...but i don't wana invest that money into it without knowing for certain..so..how will i know the dist. is bad?
brandonlong88 4 months ago
not only cloggs headgasket, but radiator, heater core and everything else...if this was good for your engine, why would it not just be mixed in with anti-freeze?
hondaslave 4 months ago
@hondaslave Some actually do have sealers built in from the factory. And if you don't think planned obsolescence isn't built into cars these days, you're living in a fantasy world. They build em to break these days. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago 6
@scottykilmer What are some examples of planned obsolescence? I've found this theory rather interesting, but haven't known of any examples of this.

iv got a Mazda mx6 it over heats in 15min off driving every time i get in it so i stopped driving it will steel seal stop the problem. iv cleaned the hole coolant system when i was cleaning it i found a choc type of water come out off the bottom of the radiator and motor
DJjamespodcast 4 months ago
@DJjamespodcast daughters neon was like that, low oil in pan,all put in the radiator.....chocolate goo......old days it was some water in the pan,so you knew it was a gasket, but I never saw the goo in a radiator like this NEON.......Scotty said it was a head gasket......
Maxwellhouse66 4 months ago
what caused the oil to be sucked from the pan and put into the radiator of a Dodge NEON.....happened long ago......bad head?
Maxwellhouse66 4 months ago
@Maxwellhouse66 generally a blown head gasket. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer give it a try, but if it doesn't work, you'll have to tear the head off and fix it with a new gasket and PRAY the head's not warped. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer I am not familiar with the head gasket at all....where is it, what purpose does it serve exactly and what causes it to blow?
whole27 4 months ago
@whole27 it seals the head of the engine with the valves in it to the block of the engine with the pistons in it. If it breaks down, the engine can't run correctly. a BIG deal. scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
Hi Scotty, thanks for your video. I have a 1998 Cadillac Deville Northstar 4.6 v8 and it may have head gasket issue. I want to know (1) which sealer (brand and product) do you recommend for this aluminum engine? (2) Will it clog the heater core or other components? There are many brands which claim their products free of such a problem, but there are also many complains about these brands. I appreciate if you can give me an answer. Thank you. Eagle
cnhawkxyy 4 months ago
@cnhawkxyy those northstar engines are crap as they age, VERY complex and blow head gaskets all the time. You can try any sealer, but odds are none will work on that crappy caddie design. it will cost you 3 times the value of that car to replace the gaskets due to insane design, so you might try steel seal and if it works, sell it fast. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer
Thank you very much for your reply. May I have one more question: How to prevent the sealer from clogging the heater core or other components? Thank you.
cnhawkxyy 4 months ago
@cnhawkxyy you remove the thermostat when using the sealer, and run the heater full blast during the process too. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer
Too sad.

PanoChick 4 months ago
Hey Scotty, my car overheated last week, took the rad in to be refurbished and is now back in but I am not convinced that there wasn't damage done to the head gasket as now I have white smoke coming from the exhaust. I know that's not definitive and the shop ran a test (the one where the blue fluid turns yellow) and it did not change color, but am still not convinced that the head gasket doesn't have a leak. Should I drop some Steel Seal in there just to be sure?
PanoChick 4 months ago
@PanoChick I would those babies have REALLY weak head gaskets. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer Thanks! One more question - sometimes when the car is idling at a red light the rpms and engine will drop for a second, almost as if it is stalling and then come back. It does this repeatedly and gets worse when the car has been on the road for over a half hour. Neither the heat nor the a/c was on at the time and it didn't do this before it overheated. Should I be concerned?
PanoChick 4 months ago
@PanoChick Watch my video "fixing a car that idles pooorly" and try all that first. Scotty

anyways whats better a twincharged ls1 or a twin turbo ls3?
my trans am is way under powered and im wondering what i should do about it
xyzdorky66 4 months ago
@xyzdorky66 twin turbo, as for the trans am, put a supercharger on it if you have lots of money to pay for that. Scotty
scottykilmer 4 months ago
@scottykilmer but superchargers dont get near the power as a twin turbo kit, im wanting 1200 hp, not some pussy 600 hp.
also il lgive you $2 final offer.
the reason i say you should make everything one shot is cause it would save soooo much time in editing, and filming.
xyzdorky66 4 months ago
@xyzdorky66 but you get smoother power and better reliability also it doesn't heat up as much... If your gonna go all out and have a bad ass intercooler than thats fine...

@xyzdorky66 twin turbo ls3 but for now you should try a single turbo just get a big one
