Whats wrong if both of them dominate oricon. They work non stop to achieve that position. I'm agree that they are not the best when it comes to vocal, dancing or musi but they also act, in drama/movies and had their own variety shows. If you dont like them that does not mean Japanese have bad taste in music. Idol group is different that other artist. They have very loyal fan who will buy most of their singles no matter how good it is.

There are still great and respectful musicians out there, it's just that the majority of the population choose to support / purchase really POP and otaku songs. @tokutom I don't think it's a matter of taste in music. The thing is that the groups in question are so ridiculously popular in Japan that people buy their CDs regardless of personal tastes in music or whether or not the music is good. Personally, I feel that the popularity is well-deserved (both Arashi and AKB48 work their butts off doing a variety of jobs, both music-related and not).

The Oricon charts, by nature, does a better job of showing who is popular than showing who makes good music.

@tokutom I don't think they're particularly bad, but I can name a countless number of artists that make better music then they do, so I can see your concern. Personally, I've come to like both Arashi and AKB48 after watching a lot of the non-music stuff they do.

The top 20 songs show that, at that point, it's basically an all-out popularity contest. It's sad to see some talented people not get the credit they deserve, but I've come to accept that the charts are not a good measure of quality.

@tokutom If you don't like Oricon's 100, then look at Billboard's Hot 100 for 2010 (Japan). AKB48 only has one song in the top ten, and four in the whole chart. SKE48 didn't chart at all

Also Billboard integrates English songs in the chart, like Fireflies or Gaga, which were near the top

But AKB48 and Arashi are just popular lol It's not really music but more of popularity... both group has like 10 of their OWN variety show and probably each indiviual member are in drama/ variety / News and stuff so there's alot of advertising going on lol...So It's not really taste of music but more of popularity lol
