  • Great stuff, I actually just disconnected the fan and it's fine, it doesn't overheat.

    Just tried on a 30' shoot.

    Dimming the light does the job to be on the safe side.

  • Hey Mark,

    Thanks for posting this. I may wire a switch into mine at some point however I may be happy with my current solution. I own 3 of these. I replaced the stock fan with a Noctua NF-R8 80mm fan.

    The sound level is cut in half at least. I can hear the stock fan from across the room and cannot hear the Noctua fan unless I'm very close. There's a huge difference. The stock fan is rated at <33dB and the Noctua is <17dB.

    I've only worked on one light so far. I purchased a 3 fan kit.

  • I did all this and now the fan will not come on at all.. I even put it back the way it cam and fan still wont come on. Could i have blown the fan. the light still comes on. Please any help would be great.

  • 3 questions:

    1: how long can the lights run with the fan off before it shuts down?

    2: why can you just add a dimmer to slow down the speed of the fan to reduce the sound?

    3: why cant the fan be replace with one that dosent make the humming sound?

  • Oh also i loved the bit with the soldering iron when the solder moved and it didn't actually do anything other that melt the plastic on the wire.

    I normally just cover all of my contact with glue from a hot glue gun. if i use shrink wrap just wave it underneth the shrink wrap a few times.

  • lol if you watched the real Sd video there was solder on it. I know hot glue would melt with these lights so I would not try it but nice idea. I temp res chemical weild might work

    I was taught and i have always used Adobe Premiere to edit.

  • What is the difference between Movie Studio And pro. I use Movie Studio because I can't afford the Pro version.

  • pro 8 has about 95% more features than movie studio. Unlimited tracks, masking, etc, etc. The best way to see all the features is to go over to their website and take a look.

    Do you have to use a switch or can you use a variable power dial? Similar to the one on the QL-1000 that adjusts the light intensity. If so you could adjust the fan noise down without losing all of the ventilation.

  • you probably could but I just opted for a switch. It was just as easy to install :)

  • I love Arri lites and only use them. I would never turn off fans in lites thou. Fire hazard! :P

  • they have a thermosta switch that turns the lights off at 90 C but I love those arri lights too but they cost so much for the really good kits :)

  • I would probably just repair it. The schematics of the lights guts are pretty easy and I could redo the entire thing if I wanted :)

  • Hey Mark, even though I wouldn't do this, I watched the video because I felt like it lol.. Anyway, you may want to put in the annotations instead of a heating iron for the shrink wrap, you can use a household hairdryer. Great video Mark!

  • I would have used my heat gun but I could not find it. I actually tried a hairdryer and it does not work, after doing it for 30 mins..lol. The best other method is the soldering gun :)

  • actually they are silent air fans and you can not hear them on a normal set but if you are shooting a drama where you need silences its best to turn the fan off. How tos are harder..lol its has content too :) thanks :)

Im in middle school and don't have the money to get all of the real fancy lights, but I do have Photokey and a really good camera and a blue blanket the exact shade of blue for it, I use my dads work lights, it looks like a professional look! Amazing what you can do with some of the stuff around the house!
