  • After 1,5 Jear learning I´m between good and verry good !Am I stupid?

  • if you want to learn another language than read write and listen whit what little you might know at first . look for free resources online like youtube vids and google translate (it makes mistakes but that helps you to). go deep into the language you're trying to learn no matter how difficult it gets at first, "never give up never surrender". I speak English, Spanish, Portuguese, and am learning Dutch and will go after Catala next. nice video man keep up the good work.

  • youre english is flawless almost cant belive it....io sono americano but parla calabrese

  • You have never attended any language school ? If yes, didi you relay on materials that contains books and CDs or just books ?

  • If you could recommend a short list of books for learning languages (particularly Spanish ) what would they be?

  • you are so cute ive been studying itailan and its definately a hard road for me. everyday for 15 months i studied and studied.

  • I am going to try your strategy. It sounds interesting.

  • I am on my way to start learning languages on my own. My name is Alexandra, I am 28 years old and I am Romanian. I only speak Romanian and English, but in school I studied also French and German, but my knowledge in both of them is poor. I would like to use foreign languages at work (for the time being I am in search of a job and I noticed that using fluently at least two foreign languages is required). Can you give me an advice regarding having a job using foreign languages? Mulţumesc :-)

  • I love this!

  • This is so helpful but I have school. And my parents are not gonna buy Dutch/Italian stuff for me lol

  • How long did it take you to master the 8 languages that you speak?

  • You're very inspiring :)

  • right now i can speak 4 languages, but they all kinda happened naturally. My mother tongue is frisian which is a regional language. second language dutch because i live in the netherlands i grew up bilingual. I learned english also naturally by watching tv and a few lessons in high school. we also had german in high school and although i'm not fluent in german i can speak it fairly well i think. at least i can understand german good enough. sometimes i try to talk to german students.

  • Luca, sei Italiano???

  • Luca...you speak with a great American English accent! You're awesome dude. Your advice is right on the money. I'm currently studying French, German & Spanish and everything you're saying is true in regards to learning a foreign language. Keep kickin' ass!

  • Its too noisy so i couldnt get anything

  • Wait, wait, -- is English not at least one of your first languages??

    And thanks for this. :>

  • I hate interductions

  • Great work Luca. Seems you are so passionate about Thai things :)

I've came across the topic of Mind Mapping in organizing studies. Do you know this by any way. Out of your experience learning many languages can you give me a clue how I can use this in learning my French ASAP...

  • i loveeee your accent :)

  • @natasjaJerjomina - I didn't notice an accent. o_O

  • @chibiariel well for me it is, i dont know where heres from but hes not from uk, so its an accent for me :L

  • @natasjaJerjomina - Aah, yes, yes, that makes sense. He's from Italy, but his Italian accent is hardly noticeable. I'm from New England, and many people here have that accent. So, of course it would seem normal to me.

    Now, I guess that was kind of arrogant of me to say earlier. I wasn't thinking... ;;;

  • Some more questions from Tomek:

8 When you do a translation and it’s quite good but still not perfect, I mean there are few words that you translate or write in a wrong way, what do you do? Do you keep rewriting only the words you’ve got problems with or you keep doing translations?

9 Do you listen to the same dialogues later, I mean as additional exercises to the schedule that you’ve presented? For example after 2 months, 4 months, etc.

  • @tombaryla Dear Tomek, I tend to answer all the questions in my blog (you can find the link on my Youtube channel), please feel free to post them there and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Luca

  • Another questions from Tomek:

5 What do you do if you finish a dialogue faster than 6 or 7 days for example in 3 days? Do you go to a new dialogue or you keep repeating the one that you’ve learnt?

6 What do you think about rewriting a dialogue of a target language before doing some translations? I think it’s quite useful if we don’t know a given language at all. But maybe I’m wrong?

7 What do you do not to mix several languages together?

  • Hello! My name's Tomek,I come from Poland and I'm really impressed with what you've been doing. Because about a month ago I put your method into my studying of German and a week ago also into Spanish, I would like to ask you some questions:

1 Do you study several languages at the same time?

2 Do you always study a new language using your mother tongue or you also use other languages?

3 When you study a new dialogue do you do some additional translation, I mean literal one?

  • How long to get to a conversational level in a language? For you and how you make that!?Wie soll man anfangen eine Sprache zu sprechen??

  • I reeeeeeaaally want to learn Italian, if there is anyone that can possible help me, and/or show me a website that is good. thanks!

  • @HelloImIsabella 'm an italian guy who speaks english spanish french and a bit of portuguese. I can tell you that Italian and Spanish are the hardest languages to learn by far! Despite this, I really recommend you to start learning it, couse reaching your goal in this particular field gives you a barely imaginable satisfaction. It can spread you doors that will allow you to do many many more things, to learn other populations, ideas, mentality..thats the coolest thing you could do, trust me.

  • Is it Ok to start learning two languages at the same time?

  • @EastOrick well, you should learn them once, after you mastered one language, then go on the next one ;)

  • do you know what his secret is learning languages?he loves them and it is a pleasure for him to do that.it's his favourite hobby.that;s the easiest way to learn a language!I can fully understand him.I am greek and i speak 8 languages included my mothertongue.keep going mate!you are doing great!I really admire you and it would be a pleasure for me to chat with you on the net.msn:pojke698@yahoo.gr,add me if you want to.see you

    Greetings from Greece!

  • @pojkes The secret is practice :) and lots of it... force urself to use the languge on a daily basis, for instance carry a handbook with you in order to readily look up words that you are curious about, focus on learning vocabulary first, dont bother with spelling and sentence structure too much in the beginning or it might over whelm you. Interacting with people that speak the language helps tremendously as well but I imagine u dont have that option :)

  • Your accent is amazing, but if you were wondering, I noticed one slight mistake in pronounciation. at 5:27 when you pronounce the word "complicated", you should say COMplicated, with the stress on the first syllable, not the third.

I am greatly enjoying your videos, and I just subscribed!

  • learning a new language as an adult has more to do with you're brain than it does with the method, as a child our brains work differently in that they learn language very fast, some people are lucky though and retain this ability into adulthood. As for learning a languages, I focus on the vocabulary much more than the grammar. I find this much more effective, but were all different.

  • You are absolutely amazing. I have always had a desire to learn other languages but never had the discipline to actually do it. I start Spanish in the fall and will use these videos for inspiration.

    Thank you.

  • These are some really great tips for learning new languages! At Brainscape, we use flashcard technology to help people learn languages, but check out our video response we have posted about the importance of speaking in order to learn a language! Keep up the good work!

  • Could you post in your website what you've said?

  • @vitzbrito Just did :-) Luca

  • @poliglotta80 Thank you very much! And I'm your fan, I'm starting to learn french just now. I'm studying by myself and I'm using your ideas, thank you very much you've inspired me! One day I would like to learn Italian!

  • You rock man thk you for sharing......

  • I learned Italian in high school was quite good at it actuallly but now I can only remember one word: frigorifero :) Shame on me

  • did you once say that english isn't your first language, if it isn't it's perfect, and that inspires me to continue with my studies

  • Dear Luca.

What are the languages that you were able to speak when you were 19?

Je veux faire une comparaison. :))

    Merci beaucoup.

    Alan

  • I'm using a grammar book, and actually it has helped a lot. Do you think I should continue using it? I don't know if the grammar will stay inside my head.

  • I think it's amazing that you can speak so many languages, im currently a freshman in college. Im majoring in biochemistry but i've been thinking about minoring in linguistics. As of now i speak english and i can also speak urdu... im taking arabic now... in about a year i think i'd like to start on a new on... should italian be fairly easy i have some limited spanish background. Also, WHY havent you picked up arabic? its sooo widely used. Again, this was very inspiring!

  • u're super inspiring!

i'm speaking several languages little by little :)

    good luck with your russian!

  • constant, natural, and pleasant. (quoting luca, minute 4:20)

    =)

  • do you think busuu is effective???

  • Your comments are very helpful, inspiring and well-spoken. I am an American learning Chinese. In your other video I was impressed that you could speak Chinese so well after only about one year. Thanks again for your advice.

  • Some of the viewers (like 6 or something) don't understand English :P

  • You are awesome!

  • I discovered that the German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has lots of resources on their website for those looking to learn German. My favorite is their daily podcast "Langsam gesprochene Nachricten," five to ten minutes of news in German spoken slowly for the foreign learner. I don't know if any other countries' broadcasters have anything similar, but I thought I'd put it out there as one example of the internet resources available to people.

  • do you have a facebook?

  • I liked your vids man, there a great inspiration. I am an american teenager trying to learn German because I just think the language is very interesting and I know alot of doors could be opened for me by being bilingual, I have one simple question, language learning is fun but sometimes I can give up on it easy due to lack of discipline, how over the years of your experience of learning languages did you keep perseverance in it all? Thanks -Andrew

  • @andrewl5201 Thanks. The answer is simple:..my passion for languages was and is still huge. I gave this rose a lot of water, litte by little, every day. Instead of withering, I saw it flourish. I literally saw the potential of speaking many languages unfold. It brought me all sorts of beatiful things. The life I had tells me every day that I am doing something great for me. And tht's the simple truth that keeps me going on with this adventure. Give it a try and you will stay motivated. Luca

  • @andrewl5201 Warum probierst du nicht einmahl was deutsch zu reden mit jemanden in Deutschland ueber Skype: Why not try and speak some german with someone from germany through skype.

  • did you learn any of these languages without actually being in the country?

  • @3510211 No, I picked up 90% of what I know by staying in Italy. I've never been to the US for example. Living in-country is a huge language learning booster, but it is not a myth that one has to go abroad if they want to learn a language well. The important thing is the friends that you see, the things that you watch and listen to,a and, ultimately, your general attitude towards learning, towards languages..and towards people .Luca

  • What doors has knowing so many languages opened for you, Luca?

  • Excellent! Thank you for sharing this!

  • @luidavinci Thanks for all the nice comments left on my videos. If you have any specific questions, you can ask them directly on my blog the polyglodream (the thread is on my the main page of my channel) :-) Luca

  • @poliglotta80 Va bene, Luca. Thank you! :)

  • Luca, it's heslop01 (from polyglot) - I've really been inspired your videos and it's helped me as i've not been studying my languages recently as i've not had the inspiration to do it.

Grazie per tuo video, ora, è mio missione! :D

Luca

  • I only realized now after reading comments that your Italian, and you speak much better than most native british or Americans. I would recommend reading about different accents and "types of English" (old English and middle English.

  • Or maybe irish

  • you're amazing! inspiring! have you picked up any languages outside of the indo-european family like finnish, quechua or lao?

Where I can find this text as a file to download? Mina sawut Petja, rediwsa no CCCP, mit zwei Jahren bin ich nach Deutschland gekommen e agora eu moro no Rio de Janeiro há nove meses e estou aprendendo portugues. Abraco meu amigo voce muito simpatíco.

  • Another excellent theatrical language performance from Rome, Italy. Luca you are the man!! those five negative commentaries must be from those college language professors that are part of our unsuccessful language system that has been established for years leaving many fruitless and frustrated students wondering what when wrong...cheers :P

  • YOU ARE AWESOME!!!

  • i have a question: do you use a dictionary frequently? or you first try to speak with a native and after search how to write the words? i hope you could understand what i asked =p

it's a hardly work to learn how to think in other language and to forget for a while (the) mine...i suffering with it. bye!

  • I thought you were American the way you speak English! So, your English is unbelievably good. I am studying Russian right now and parts of it are very frustrating, but some of the stuff I learned a few weeks ago are now incredibly easy. So, I am retaining new words and am able to pronounce them a bit better. I agree that learning a new language can be difficult, but I love the Russian language and learning a new language is on my top 10 things to do list.

  • Oh man, your accent is so funny. Don't take offense at that - It's actually really good - it's just not perfect. I'm an American, so I rarely ever hear foreigners try and speak with my accent. My point is that it allows me to see how others perceive the American accent, which is a real trip xD

But yeah, in the process of typing this comment I perused a couple of your videos. Fucking tops, dude, tops. You have my respect.

  • @CanceledCzech The way he speaks English is fine. I thought he was a native speaker of English, like me.

  • @YouStoleMyTube No he's right about it not being perfect. It's good though.

  • @yurismir1 Pretty sure I never said it was perfect.

  • yo i wanna speak italian. please tell me the fastest way to learn!!

  • Wait, so you write something down in the language you're trying to learn, then write that down in your native language, then try to re-write it in the language you're trying to learn?

  • luca can you speak british english? lol

  • I just started learning Italian, my native is obviously English haha. I literally just started as in last night. I hope to catch on to basic concepts in the next six months before I go and visit your wonderful Italy. I have a bit of Canadian French background from school so it may be a little smoother for me to catch on

  • @Kaylawrites canadian french is taught so poorly in school. i imagine the majority of people forget everything in 2 years

  • 8:45 - you (very ironically) pronounced "pronunciation" incorrectly.

  • thanks for the advice! I'm going to learn Cantonese since my dad speaks it, so he can help :p

  • Luca I am really inspired. You have given me a practical tool. My native languaje is spanish, I am currently devoted to improve my french which I think is in an middle intermediate level. There are other languajes that I am interested as well. Do you think is a good idea to embark in the process of learning two languajes simultaneously. Please respond. Thank you.

  • @badboy172009 Thanks for the nice words. As far as your question is concerned..it really depends on a number of things. In general, I always suggest one learn a language at a time. If you really want to learn 2, try to tackle 2 very different languages, otherwise you run the risk of establishing what I called "entangled patterns" in your head (which turns into confusion). Luca

  • @poliglotta80 4.

"Do you think is a good idea to embark in the process of learning two languajes simultaneously."

-Do you think it is a good idea to embark in the process of learning two languages simultaneously?

  • @badboy172009

    1."My native languaje is spanish"

    -My native language is Spanish,

2."improve my french which I think is in an middle intermediate level."

-improve my French, which I think is at a middle intermediate level.

3."There are other languajes that I am interested as well."

-There are other languages that I am interested in learning as well.

  • Bro I don't understand what you mean.

  • Bro I don't understand what you mean can you give examples after each tip?

  • try tamil please. its one of the hardest languages to learn with over 247 letters in the alphabet. i bet you cant do it :D

  • io non parlo italiano but i want to because of laura pausini! she's the best italian singer ever. it's a good thing though that she sings in spanish because i speak spanish.

  • Oi Luca,

I watched your videos alot. You are one of a kind an alpha and a Beta guy.

I am a dutchmen living now in Brazil. Me and my wife and her 2 kids lived before in Holland. It is hard to speak portuguese. Having an electric engineering back ground and so flexible in the languages would be a treassure for your employer, if not you have to reconsider your employer! Anyhow, if you are coming one time to brazil, I would like to drink a beer(wine) with you here, Cheers mate,

  • interesting. I find the best way to learn is to study a lot every day

  • @poliglotta80 I'm going to be going to college this fall to study Spanish and Chinese. I have already taken four years of Spanish. My school didn't have a very good program, so unfortunately I'm not as far a long as what I would like to be or should be after having taken four years of the language. Watching this video helped me to feel more confident that I will be able to reach my goal of being able to speak the languages i want to. Thank you!!

  • Thank you so much for posting all these wonderful videos. I want to become a polyglot, and you are an amazing inspiration to keep going! :)

  • man you are so awesome, ive been studying spanish and russian for 2 months and everytime i get frustrated and overwhelmed with it , i come watch your videos and they really do inspire me to continue

  • @aroberson54 This is the kindest message I've received in a long time. Thanks! It feels good to be useful and inspiring for some of you out there :-D Luca

  • Hola luca! Usa ud. tus idiomas en tu trabajo?Cuándo comienza a aprender tus idiomas? And I am an american and i am impressed with your accent

  • @eauclairewisconsin Hola.

"Me ha dado mucha esperanza" just little details that you need to correct.

  • your amazing man.

  • Wow, you have a VERY convincing American accent, but you need to work on your voiced s's. (You pronounce "phase" like "face".) As a native speaker of Norwegian, I struggle with the same thing myself. It helps to be aware of it, though. Your Swedish is also pretty good, jeg forstår deg uten problemer ;) Keep it up!

  • grazie

  • Very good tips! Your American accent is amazingly good for someone who is not a native. I am impressed!

  • @UniverseExpanding He's not a native? That is amazing :o

  • which language did you find the 'easiest' to learn?. You mother tongue is Italian so Im guessing a language similar or to Italian?. I'm thinking of learning a language like Spanish or Italian but I fear that I will forget it as I live in an English speaking country and know on one who speaks a foreign language.

  • would you recommend Rosetta Stone to learn German and Russian

  • @DJPWNSTAR don't spend money on rosetta stone. If you can get it from a friend or from your local library then use it. Keep in mind that rosetta stone will not get you fluent in a language like they claim. you should use it alongside other methods. Rosetta Stone only teaches you how to say things in one certain context and not in all of the ways commonly used. Check out Steve Kaufmann's videos about rosetta stone. I do not recommend it.

  • Extremely inspirational! I am like a polyglot in the way that I love languages, however, I do not have the talent for learning that you do.

  • Luca is soo cute !

  • Hi Luca! First of all, I wanna congratulate U! I've read about your method (Target L-> Native L => Target) and as a beginner, I have a Q about it. You thinkin' about word-2-word transl. or just a "gist"-transl.? Well, I can only translate a language into another if I've already understood it properly, can't I? But if I've really understood it properly why I have to translate it? I hope U get my point, cos my English is not so good, but I'm very interested in your opinion on this issue.

  • Dear friend, take a look at the right side of the video, there-s a thread to the blog of a friend of mine where the method is explained more in depth, as you request. Have a good day. Luca

  • woow so nice and such an inspiration, im took a spanish course i nschool and the teacher took the fun out of it and rushed it so i got a bad mark but now i will try to learn it by myself!! btw you are so good in languages and so cuteeee :)

The critical period hypothesis states that the first few years of life is the crucial time in which an individual can acquire a first language if presented with adequate stimuli. If language input doesn't occur until after this time, the individual will never achieve a full command of language.

But in your case this hypothesis is clearly false...

  • Thanks for the comment! I think that there is no universal and commonly accepted theory. We are all different and have different goals, techniques and points of views when it comes to learning languages. Nevertheless, general and reasonable principles do exist in this regard.

  • Wow,I have never encounter any foreigner who can speak Mandarin before, let alone writing. You are amazing! Because Chinese is a character-based language,it's very different from European languages.

Thank you for the video and the good advices.Best regards.

  • you are the einstein of languages, you are amazing.

i want to learn more languages, but i dont know if my brain have the capacity to learn more.

    tu és um genio.

  • You are really too gentle. I don't consider myself a genius, and such comments kind of make me blush, because I know I don't deserve them. The point I want to get across with these videos is: we can ALL learn languages well if we know how to do it and if we have passion. All you need is a good car (method) and a lot of fuel (passion). You can go pretty much everywhere with these 2. Have a great day :-) Luca

  • Thanks! you just gave me the inspiration to continue my French studies :D, je parle francai comonsi comosa.

  • AT 9:30 what (sound something like esimal) language series does he mention? thanks

  • Luca is talking about Assimil. It's an excellent series in French + your chosen language.

The article he's linked to explains his method in detail (note - there are two articles, so be sure to read both).

  • mille grazie luca. !

  • Hey, Luca. How do you catch the accent patterns. I noticed you use good intonation also. You can't learn that from books!

  • @jossx1987 Yeah you need native speakers. You need to go to the country or find some native speakers where you are and chat with them.

  • @kotapaka! I think so! I've been talking to an english speaking friend from USA on skype. Actually, language learning websites are cool to find e-pal you can speaking English with in exchange of your main language. It's interesting.

  • Fantastic!

  • Can you please explain the elementary method. You hear a sentence, repeat it, then write it down in your native language. Then the next day, you do this again with a new sentence. Then the third day, you translate the sentence you learned the first day into the language you are practicing? Then the fourth day you'd do the same to the sentence you learned on the second day...right?

  • You're very helpful and encouraging indeed. I started to "re-learn" Spanish with your method (in my case that almost means a start from scratch haha) and you know, I've learned much more for two weeks than I would have learned for 2 months in my university. :) Thank you, Luca!

  • Thank you, Luca. This was brilliant. I've written down all your tips in a word doc. Thanks so much for your inspiration.

  • Dear Rebecca, you can send me a PM and I will forward you the whole script. I also created a thread to the blog where this method has been presented "officially" ("further information", right side of the video). Thanks again for your enthousiasm ^^ Luca

  • Indeed, to learn a foreign language one needs to establish ties with the culture which is around the language that one is studying. There is no way to learn a language in a satisfactory way without absorbing some culture in the process. I love your videos, dude!

  • Thank you from America

  • I am a polyglot to :) I speak swedish (mother tongue) English (from school) Greek, spanish, italian. But I can understand five more languages those are arabic, french, german and some farsi and some chinese :)

My method is that i build a culture around me :) listen to music, youtube clips, TV, comics and native friends :)

  • Hablo algo espanol means "I speak something Spanish", but nice try.

  • Hablo algo espanol.

I learn little French, Portuguese(Brazilian), Japanese, Korean, Cantonese, Hebrew and Vietnamese.

I can nearly read Russian alphabets. I can read some Hebrew and Korean alphabets.

I want some great ways to learn to learn foreign languages.

  • Much thanks from Russia! You do great work for many people. 5 stars! By the way, have you tried to do british pronunciation as good as you do american? And what do you think how difficult this pronunciations in comparing?

  • the british one is much harder! (i know you didn't ask, but I'm sure many people can agree with me) :)

  • For every language course you can pay with your mastercard , but luca's tips are priceless :)

  • Luca, congratulations on your work. One language that I tnink is challenging is Brazilian Portuguese (my native language) . It is kind of different from other latin languages like italian (which I`m studying now). Have you ever tried it? Ciao

  • Dear friend, I recently started learning Portuguese from Portugal and made a video in it where I explain why I made this choice. Thanks for your kind words anyway :-) Luca

Ciao (or as we write in Portuguese "tchau")

  • Hi, I'm a polyglot myself, and I speak English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese (Brazilian), German, and also studying Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean (since I'm living in Asia at the moment). The Brazilian Portuguese accent is not easy, but with constant drilling, I learned it to near native levels. My strategy has been listening and imitating audiobooks, memorizing dialogues. listening to music, and using Rosetta Stone. I love Brazilian Portuguese, and I've worked hard to learn it.
