The greatest song ever , maybe, not even the best cover of LOVE. Vocals not quiet strong enough and some new age flavor added leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Still good.
sound quality sucks on this vid, but when this song comes on i...don't know. it pulls me in. the Damned were one of the best bands. early, late stuff doesn't matter. they were up there with the Clash, Jam, etc.
This is 80's-tastic! Even turning it 80's style couldn't ruin such a great song by Love! Though it almost does... Thank God they never touched "maybe people would be the times", because that's too perfect of a song for anyone to attempt to ruin!
Listened to all the versions (thanks to comments by youtube viewers) and have to say i like The Damned version best. This is purely because we all have different tastes and what appeals to me may not necessarily appeal to others. This version rocks for me. I think the others are great too, it's a great song after all, any good song in the right hands is do-able.
I did the same and I really agree - about the tastes and this version's ingenuity. Calexico's version is more faithful to the original, and not so powerful. And the video is just one the best ever made.
@itiguawe truly is! This never got much radioplay in my country the 80s so discovering it now I was just stunned. How could I have missed such a pearl for 30+ years. Damned good.
I remember this from "120 Minutes"; an amazing video. For a band that recorded a song titled "Edward the Bear," their version of this song really came out of nowhere and impressed the hell out of me.
It STILL impresses the hell out of me!!!!!!! Amazing.
I love both versions. I don't think The Damned killed anything with any spaghetti western influences that weren't in the original. They were just sending a great song out to a different generation. It all really depends on the listener. The fact that someone put a spaghetti western type vid to this tune can lead to misunderstandings.
A very dangerous video to make. It's a compendium of transport, check out the light aircraft at ground level, mixing with pedestrians and Dave Vanian on his BSA.
The Damned is the best thematically accurate sounding bands ever, the tone they set is really deep and evocative- almost hitchcock-ian in its ability draw upon the listener's creative imagery. David Vanian is the GOTHFATHER.
@lifepod2036 I have to say I disagree. Love's version is an amazing song by itself, but The Damned give it all of the extra trimmings, and really kill it with the Spaghetti Western influences.

I've been a Damned fan since at least '82 but I think you have to give the nod to the Love original in the context that they were the real trailblazers way back in '67.
I remember hearing this song at work at one day on my computer about five years ago (it was NOT the first time I heard it) and I closed my office door and danced and cried. Maybe I should have been committed - and in a way I am - to The Damned!
I was thinking... The Damned does this much much better than the original singer; Brian (60's band Love) respectively. I really love how Vanian sings it... and the guitars are so moving! The LOVE version is great too... two very different approaches. You may like one more than the other, but neither is "better".
