  • The greatest song ever , maybe, not even the best cover of LOVE. Vocals not quiet strong enough and some new age flavor added leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Still good.

  • the GREATEST COVER ever

  • Great!

  • I'm sorry, LOVE beat all

  • sound quality sucks on this vid, but when this song comes on i...don't know. it pulls me in. the Damned were one of the best bands. early, late stuff doesn't matter. they were up there with the Clash, Jam, etc.

  • Oblivians truly did one of the best covers of this song. That's my personal favorite. You guys should check it out too. It's a really amazing cover.

  • Listened to all the versions (thanks to comments by youtube viewers) and have to say i like The Damned version best. This is purely because we all have different tastes and what appeals to me may not necessarily appeal to others. This version rocks for me. I think the others are great too, it's a great song after all, any good song in the right hands is do-able.

  • @jackthehatuk

I did the same and I really agree - about the tastes and this version's ingenuity. Calexico's version is more faithful to the original, and not so powerful. And the video is just one the best ever made.

  • THIS IS ART !

  • @itiguawe truly is! This never got much radioplay in my country the 80s so discovering it now I was just stunned. How could I have missed such a pearl for 30+ years. Damned good.

  • I have to say - that of the versions I have heard of this song, it's not the best. The UFO version is superb (from Lights Out)

  • I remember this from "120 Minutes"; an amazing video. For a band that recorded a song titled "Edward the Bear," their version of this song really came out of nowhere and impressed the hell out of me.

It STILL impresses the hell out of me!!!!!!! Amazing.

  • the damned two out of ten.....love 10 out of 10......

  • I love both versions. I don't think The Damned killed anything with any spaghetti western influences that weren't in the original. They were just sending a great song out to a different generation. It all really depends on the listener. The fact that someone put a spaghetti western type vid to this tune can lead to misunderstandings.

  • the Damned covered this??!!

  • Interesting. I've long loved the original, and didn't know about this. Maybe a bit too faithful to the original, but quite good

  • love their version.

  • I prefer the UFO version (you goobers).

  • pale niggas in sandy leather and whiskey soaked chest hair.

  • Early Boo Radleys did a great cover of this song as well. Thanks for posting.. . .

  • This is one of my fav all time songs!

  • love it

  • This is ok but check out Calexicos cover of it.

  • Awesome

  • Not original but good

  • I love the guitar on this.

  • Incredible song!

  • Written by Bryan McLean but sung so beautifully by Arthur Lee on the original! RIP both of you!!

  • A damn good song from 1986....long live the stolen memories of time eternal...

  • @2trikki "A DAMNED good song from 1986" fixed.

  • it sounds very like a cure song, i love them as well so it's pretty awesome

  • Actually, I quite prefer the UFO version (on their album "Lights Out")

  • @aveylupek UFO is a great band, Lights Out is a great album, but in that specific case, The Damned sounds better. My opinion.

  • Pure greatness. The Damned are cool as fk and anyone who says otherwise is either deaf, retarded or one of the band's mother-in-laws... ;)

  • This is more than a cover song...this is an absolutely brilliant tribute to Arthur Lee (RIP) and LOVE..

  • absolute classic man. Divvent dis this track badloser its awesome! Reminds me of happy days back in Dunfermline. Long live Vanian & Co

  • fark i love the damned

  • every aspect of this is pitiful. and whoever commented that it 'knocks spots off the original' is either deaf, retarded or one of the band's mums.

  • @thebadloser Why the hell would you comment on a song in a decade long gone? What are you? Bitter?

  • what a guitar

  • Damned good version, UFO did a hell of a version to in the 70:s as well, LOVE them both!

  • Covering a song/s can be good or bad thing.Eloise, alone again or'...THE DAMNED.....Pure diamonds in the rough.

  • @jamesh5422 Fuck off...

  • @jamesh5422 mouthbreather

  • @jamesh5422 dude u kno 1 of Glen Danzig's influential bands is the Damned rite...if there was no damned then probably the Misfits wouldnt exist...

  • Heart heavy but not sad A bit of light is still in all of us.

  • A very dangerous video to make. It's a compendium of transport, check out the light aircraft at ground level, mixing with pedestrians and Dave Vanian on his BSA.

  • @vegbloke Mad Max meets For a few dollars more.

  • damn the 19 people who dont like this song or video.

  • The last great thing The Damned did. It knocks spots off the original, granted the technological advances.

What is that tanker-driver carrying ? The Seniorita dancing in her dusty dress as it swirls threateningly behind her.....

I was living in Highgate north London when this came out, walking in the woods with this spinning round my head.

  • G-D blessed us all with the Damned!

  • A shame the sound is so mediocre. The original recording is so crisp and dynamic. An amazing remake.

  • The Damned is the best thematically accurate sounding bands ever, the tone they set is really deep and evocative- almost hitchcock-ian in its ability draw upon the listener's creative imagery. David Vanian is the GOTHFATHER.

  • HOLY SHIT

    WHEN DID THIS HAPPEN

    THANK YOU NAZNOMAD

    RIP ARTHUR LEE

  • Chorus pedal!

  • excellent song , cool video,,,the epitome of the brit punk bands of the late 70's and 80's------awesome mates

  • LOVEs original version is better. but I love the damned's version as well

  • @lifepod2036 ;D agreed- along w/ UFO. although I don't know if i've heard a "bad" version...

    poppasean9

  • @poppasean9 lol it's too much of a classic song to mess up but Im sure someone has tried on purpose on youtube :D

  • @lifepod2036 I have to say I disagree. Love's version is an amazing song by itself, but The Damned give it all of the extra trimmings, and really kill it with the Spaghetti Western influences.

  • This is love's song. Love FTW!

  • could not remember the name of this song all i knew is that I wanted to hear it again and I finally found it!..., love the guitar work!!! Awesome song!!

  • The first and last time I ever saw this video was back in 1987 on a late night cable video program called "Night Tracks." I really adored this song back then. But since there was no Internet and TV was not at all interactive, I never thought I'd ever see it again. Thank you for posting this. I'm going to buy this CD as well as Calexico and the original from Love.

  • And the fact that it was filmed in the Mohave desert makes it more special.

  • Love the whole early California Spanish theme, very striking and romantic.

  • Nice flashback to the living in the Oakwoods in 87, off campus USD housing. I think we wore the capet out at Balboa Crest liquor.

  • Heard this song at the end of Bunny and the Bull and almost drove me mad trying to find out what it was. Love the Damned version

  • hi evey 1 bryn merrick is mi dad an hell ya they were the best wsh they were all still playen 2gether so we cud keep haven such gr8t songs miss them all so much love u lot ella merrick

  • Agreed. : )

  • Awesome song! Strange video, though.

  • I love this song, I could hear it over and over again. :-)

  • NO WAY! Damned are wicked, copying LOVE

  • Stylish as fuck.

  • This song kicks ass along with the band!!!

  • Who is the hot guy in the sombrero?? Yummy! Love the shot of the flamenco dancer with the oil rig behind her.

  • @jmo4579 I think that the guy in the sombrero is Bryn Merrick, the bass player.

  • UFO - Alone Again of ( mejor)

  • Utterly amazing !! brings back so many memories..... my first flat warming party.... no carpets ...and this playing..... happy days !!!

  • This is my song today.....

  • This reminds me of my father and his land.

  • Love this vid!!

  • awesome thanks for the post

  • I REMEMBER they used to have it on on mtv long ago...

    great VID!

LOVE IT... and it sort of passes through the message of the chords through this vid as the setting fits perfectly!

    JUST GREAT! GREAT POST!

  • I've been a Damned fan since at least '82 but I think you have to give the nod to the Love original in the context that they were the real trailblazers way back in '67.

  • Dave Vanian looks a bit like Carlos Dengler in this.

  • No version of Alone Again Or can beat the original one.

    This Damned cover is disgusting!!!

  • I remember hearing this song at work at one day on my computer about five years ago (it was NOT the first time I heard it) and I closed my office door and danced and cried. Maybe I should have been committed - and in a way I am - to The Damned!

  • I was thinking... The Damned does this much much better than the original singer; Brian (60's band Love) respectively. I really love how Vanian sings it... and the guitars are so moving! The mood is entirely different. The original comes out kinda of angry erm frustrated. This is a tremendous cover. :)

I'd pick The Damned's version any day. *smiles*

  • One of my fave songs by them... I have Anything on vinyl... I loooooove it. Perfect record :)

  • This has always been one of my favorite videos. I love how the plane gently glides across the screen as the last chord is strummed.

Arthur Lee wrote an amazing song. Calexico just covers it, but The Damned really made it their own.

  • @evolunacy2

I believe that it was actually written by Bryan MacLean, not Arthur Lee.

  • @evolunacy2 the song was written by Bryan MacLean

  • @evolunacy2 Actually, the song was written by Bryan MacLean.(just so you know);)

  • @evolunacy2 But, it wasn't Arthur Lee who wrote the song, but Bryan McLean, the other guitarist/vocal in Love

  • The Damned - and Dave especially - 1) rock, and 2) kick arse. Discussion closed :).

  • Comment removed

  • Since when does a band need to be "manly" to have good vocals? That issue aside, Dave Vanian has a very deep and masculine voice, not that this makes it better. But he's a total bad ass and I won't hear otherwise.

  • Think it was in the making of this video in Aus, when the Damned nearly all died! Apparently the pilot fell asleep in the plane they were flying to the shoot in. Roman Jugg had to wake the stupid shite up!!!

  • Well the first cover I had listened to was UFO's and I was soooo disappointed...

Although to me this cover is not as beautiful as Love's original, it is really really good!!!!!

Moreover The Damned are just... great ;)

  • @Misspotatoe Are you kidding? UFO's cover is awesome!

I mean, in my oponiun, UFO's cover is better than this one. Though, I'm NOT saying that this one is bad. I love this cover too.

I actually prefer Dave Vanians vocals to Phil Mogg (of UFO's). There's just something about that voice ;D

I love both covers too, btw ;)

  • i only knew ufo's version until i heard this....and ufo isn't the original recording? please tell me what band recorded this first

  • @thordoggie

it was first done by arthur lee's band 'love'

  • thanks...i'll check it out

  • sadly its the late arthur lee

  • i think i like ufo's version best...all three are good, but ufo was the first i heard....so maybe i'm a little biased.

  • @camooga Yes camooga, but it was a bit longer than 3 weeks ago.

  • the original group that recorded this song is love.

just search alone again love. prepare to have your mind blown.

  • Pure class!

  • Since when did Estaban join the Damned?

  • estaban who?

  • Always knew....They were musos..BUT. They really entertain and would have been brilliant simply because they are....Love them, they exist to entertain and inform.

  • UFO also covered this. It's on the Lights Out album. Their version sounds just like this one.

  • Try Magic Potion by The Damned.Best cover theyve done!

  • Fuck the original! The Damned are the best British band ever!

  • @kennycthonic Yes Kenny!--Why?

  • Zorro mask, clever, got to love it. great song. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, everyone!

  • @throwntomato well thankyou very much you are so polite

  • @karlydoc you're welcome!

  • they still rock!!! saw em in the summer an they were bloody fantastic!!!!

  • this song is covered as welll by a band called " calexico" ...excellent cover as well !! check it out on youtube .....

love the damned version anyway , great band !

  • 1st time I saw this video. Great!- leave it to the Damned to come up with another great video. This is up there with Grimly Fiendish. I wish the video resolution was clearer.

  • The Damned does an awesome job covering this tune. If you like the tune also check out UFO's version, both are great.

  • great track,great memories,

  • it was request video with Richard Blade and a few other KROQ DJs on channel 9 in Cali.

I too could listen to this song forever

  • i would listen to this song forever..

  • The drums could easily be morphed into a drum n bass version...

  • You sir are a fool, the damned rocked on so many levels, go educate yourself please.

  • Let's see here ... The Damned were one of the most versetile bands from the 'punk' era . This and their version of " I Feel Alright ( 1970 ) " by the Stooges , are awesome !!

  • love's cover original or this? simply i cant choose......both are great!!!

  • this version of this song, and this video, are beautiful!

  • Your right, most 80's vids make no sense but I love 80's music

  • the thing I admire so much about the damned is the fact that they're done so many different genre's of music and they do them all so well. they don't just limit themselves to one genre. they're so talented they can do it all!

  • @metallikenz Yes. They are so talented.

  • @metallikenz they are the Beatles of the punk world...

  • @metallikenz Listen to the original song by Love w/ Arthur Lee, i think you'll enjoy it.

  • @metallikenz Listen to the original song by Love w/ Arthur Lee, i think you'll enjoy it. what sucks is i was all ready to see love on their latest tour, they were coming to a city near me. and then arthur died :( I was pretty upset.

  • I remember this video being played on KDOC Request Video over and over back in the late 80's.

  • thanks i remember KDOC also.. what a great tv .. channel 56?

  • Channel 56?

  • HELLLZZZZ yeah MUTHAFUCKA!!!!

request video, with richard Blade, no? or was it the fuckin POORMAN! Poorman is the best!

Back when KROQ was THE greatest.

Anyone remember Adventures with The Poorman, with the Poordog?

  • Like fellow punk pioneers The Clash and The Stranglers, The Damned became much more tuneful and accessible in the post-punk era. This excellent cover of Love's classic song made the British Top 30.

  • It's unfortunate that the Damned are sort of obligated to play only their more punk stuff now when they can obviously do so much more than that.

  • What's great about this song is its simplicity ; yet , it's very complex in its message .

The Damned perform an excellent version of this Arthur Lee & Love song ( penned by the late Bryan McLean ) ... NOT a 'cover' ; it's Damned's version of this classic .

  • it's near identical.

  • i've always came across this band name lumped together with other new wave bands of the 80s, but never got to hear any of their songs. only seen this vid thru vh1 classic today. ;) pretty good!

who's the original artist of this song?

  • Man, "Alone Again Or" is one hell of a song. I mean, I like it whowever sings it, Love, UFO, The Damned. I think would like it even sung by my deaf grandmother. :)

  • perfecto

  • Many say the original was better, but I think this has a little more punch, which I prefer.

  • I fell in love with this song as our soundtrack

  • This is my favorite love song...almost makes me want to get out & get me some that non- returned love...almost

  • Great song. Should have been much bigger in the USA.

  • last time i tried to buy this cd used on amazon just to get this song it was listed for over 100.00 dollars, no shit. Thanks for posting and sharing! I really like this song.

  • quirky damned not a patch on disco man mind

  • where's the zebra< from Katy perry

  • Favorite Damned song even though it is a cover. Brilliant!

  • This has to be my favorite cover song of all time.

  • anyone remember when they used this song for a beer comercial. Pizzd me off

  • i remember watching this on channel 56 with richard blade and the poor man

  • way too much echo on the brass parts

  • Godd mix, but no one did it better then Love with Arthur Lee :)

  • Curious around what year was this song and video made?

  • I'm guessing around 1986 or 87, because I was in the first year of dating my future ex-wife when it was being played the video shows.

  • was 87. not 4 me tho, dunno wtf vanian was thinkin about wi this effort. oi, dave, noooooooooo. shouldve left well alone. just so un..............erm...........damned..................ish

  • I absolutely love this song. I have never seen the video before and didn't know one even exists, and I was a MTV child of the 80's. LOVE IT. Thanks for posting this. Brings back my love for zest for the glamourous 80s. I remember the parties every single weekend, food galore, the big expensive hair, clothes from Loehmnans, and Nordstroms the best of the best.

  • i love the damned and i love love...what great mix

  • Listening to this make me think of my foolish, happy, and wonderful youth... Wish I could go back for just a day and be foolish again. LOL.

  • LOVE version mejor or better

  • The LOVE version is great too... two very different approaches. You may like one more than the other, but neither is "better".

  • es lo mejor de lo mejor que e escuchado de hecho la voz de dave benian le da un toke ochenteron y rico

  • nice guitar work

  • great cover of a great song with a very visual video!

  • Oh, you're talking of the Love version. I am sorry but this is the original in my mind. Post sera quta!
