I just love this song. Tennessee Ernie Ford's rendition is also beautiful. I'd love to visit the Shenandoah Valley. It looks spectacular, and photos of the soulful residents touched me.
My grandmother was born in upper East Tennessee. All of her lines have been there for over 250 years, and some of them married into TN Ernie Ford's family way back in Sullivan Co., TN. Shenandoah Valley and upper East TN are stunning!

@dktex9090 my patriarch came to the colonies in 1638. My family name goes back to 7th century Merkia(a kingdom of the 7 heptarchies, fancy names for English kingdoms). Now my wife's patriarch came about the same time. We've been here all this time & we've forgotten our roots across the sea. When people here a name that's doesn't sound at least somewhere from Britian they say that ain't an american name. English & Scots & Germans made this country due to there longevity here.
I guess they all change the lyrics to make the song fit the occasion. I learned this song while in 8th grade at Manley in 1968/69 in Chicago.I was still young enough to carry a tune and the music teacher kept drifting over towards our section of the class room and I would stop singing and she told the class what she was trying to find and a classmate named Gwendolyn Brooks told the teacher it was "Willie Means with that pretty voice. bilbo2shire
How beautiful! My mom's family comes from south-central Virginia (near Appomattox) and have lived there for many generations, going back to the early French Huguenots and even further, the Native American Powhatan tribe.
This is just awesome

These words are the closest to what I learnt in school.
The tune was a little different. Still I really love this song.
I used to sing this to my daughter as a lullaby.

Lovely song, well put together images of tough men and kindly women, I'd love to travel through this region and get a sense of pre-Union Virginia.

At least they don't pronounce the A at the end of Shenendoah.. They say Shenen-Dow whihc is the proper pronunciation..
Also check out Michael Landon's version on here..

Shenandoah is a lovely valley nestled among the Blue Ridge of Southwestern Virginia. The Blue Ridge Parkway drive is lovely.
