I hunt for a living, mainly for food, but i also work as a pest control specialist. Animal control is also to protect other wild animals and is a part of conservation also. Over population of any top predator can be a problem for the other local wildlife as it effects the whole food chain, so sometimes control is a must. Yearly projections of wild animal damage to crops and land is massive so surely farmers should have the right to protect their animal stock.

They kill home pets, including my own pet chickens. Couldn't having a large dog rectify the problem by scaring off foxes and what not? That way nothing has to be killed? As for herding animals, aren't there herding dogs that could rectify that problem as well? They're suppose to herd the animals and ward off things like foxes, right? Or is that too expensive? I don't really know, I understand that some things are necessary, but I have to wonder. :)
@phoenix1916 Since when is a chicken coop acres of land? A dog could sit and guard it. A herding dog stays with the herd (or even flocks) and guards it, that's the herding dog's purpose. People have always used herding dogs in these instances because it is practical. That's not "patrolling every area of our land 24/7 with dogs."

see I used to disagree with shooting and hunting foxes, but now I own some chickens I totally agree, foxes are pests and need to be controlled, and I nearly shot one myself with a .22 but it ran away, and I chased it and fell over lol! the gamekeeper near me has to ensure that none of his birds are killed, and a sheep farm near me lost 13 lambs last year, so anyone who disagrees with shooting, up yours :D
Also it is a fact I know people who look after land have witnessed cars dumping foxes on the side of the road next to chicken farms etc, so the next time the tree huggers bump their gums about big bad hunters they should look closer at their own front door first about being humane. Mink farms in the north of Scotland are the prime example, oh lets free the mink and what happened the mink hunted everything to extinction. I am not agreeing with mink farming but there ways to go about things.
Further to my last comment as I ran out of words last time, with regards to RSPCA, SSPCA and other so called rescuers, trap or heal these animals in towns and then once cured release into the countryside, they don't know how to hunt, they only scavange in dustbins. And you guessed it starve and kill easy prey, chickens etc. They are then get put out of their misery by people looking after their livestock. The RSPCA should put the money from the old grannies left in their wills to better use
Foxes cause a lot of damage in the countryside, they kill lambs, ewe and other poultry, OK these are commercial issues but still part of the human food chain, they attack family pets and even the odd child. Putting this aside they also hunt small animals and other vertibrae, when they overpopulate an area there is no wildlife to speak of, any small creatures eaten means no prey animals for other species. RSPCA catch these up & release them even though they cannot feed themselves in the wild.

@phoenix1916 Although a little strong, I can understand why someone can be this worked up and passionate on the subject, although they do kill chickens and are seen as vermin etc, shooting them and parading them on a public site is quite disgusting and that goes for any living creature not just foxes. @phoenix1916 Because obviously people feel strongly about seeing animals killed in this manner, alot of people don't take enjoyment in hunting down and murdering animals or seeing it happen and will in turn respond in the manner that has been shown in the comments on this video. As I said before they can cause problems for farmers sure, but going out and shooting them and/or hunting as a sport or as a form of entertainment just leaves a bad taste

@phoenix1916 perhaps if the farmer or whoever spent some more time re-enforcing the coup and perhaps making it a lot tougher for the fox to get to it's food then maybe you wouldn't have to kill them time and time again for the simple reason that their hungry and want a meal to survive and that those chickens are an easy meal for them. Maybe looking to some more humane ways of dealing with the issue rather than "lets go shooting" will result in people like you getting less abuse from others

They kill home pets, including my own pet chickens. If someone came up to your cat or dog or whatever pet you had, ripped their body to shreds and then tore open it's flesh, eating it and only leaving a few pieces of bloody fur or skin patches, I think you'd be pretty pissed off at them.

Couldn't having a large dog rectify the problem by scaring off foxes and what not? That way nothing has to be killed? As for herding animals, aren't there herding dogs that could rectify that problem as well? They're suppose to herd the animals and ward off things like foxes, right? Or is that too expensive? I don't really know, I understand that some things are necessary, but I have to wonder. :)

@phoenix1916 Since when is a chicken coop acres of land? A dog could sit and guard it. A herding dog stays with the herd (or even flocks) and guards it, that's the herding dog's purpose. People have always used herding dogs in these instances because it is practical. That's not "patrolling every area of our land 24/7 with dogs."

@phoenix1916 I didn't say not to kill foxes, I said it can be prevented with the dog. The dog won't always kill, just mostly scare off because they're not stupid enough to challenge the giant dog! Notice how I never said the dog will always kill; it'll only kill if the predator doesn't go on its merry way when the dog spots it. The point is a dog is better than the gun because it can prevent this from happening in the first place. I also think it would be better to not lose the lamb first

see I used to disagree with shooting and hunting foxes, but now I own some chickens I totally agree, foxes are pests and need to be controlled, and I nearly shot one myself with a .22 but it ran away, and I chased it and fell over lol! the gamekeeper near me has to ensure that none of his birds are killed, and a sheep farm near me lost 13 lambs last year, so anyone who disagrees with shooting, up yours :D

Also it is a fact I know people who look after land have witnessed cars dumping foxes on the side of the road next to chicken farms etc, so the next time the tree huggers bump their gums about big bad hunters they should look closer at their own front door first about being humane. Mink farms in the north of Scotland are the prime example, oh lets free the mink and what happened the mink hunted everything to extinction. I am not agreeing with mink farming but there ways to go about things.

Further to my last comment as I ran out of words last time, with regards to RSPCA, SSPCA and other so called rescuers, trap or heal these animals in towns and then once cured release into the countryside, they don't know how to hunt, they only scavange in dustbins. And you guessed it starve and kill easy prey, chickens etc. They are then get put out of their misery by people looking after their livestock. The RSPCA should put the money from the old grannies left in their wills to better use

Foxes cause a lot of damage in the countryside, they kill lambs, ewe and other poultry, OK these are commercial issues but still part of the human food chain, they attack family pets and even the odd child. Putting this aside they also hunt small animals and other vertibrae, when they overpopulate an area there is no wildlife to speak of, any small creatures eaten means no prey animals for other species. RSPCA catch these up & release them even though they cannot feed themselves in the wild.
