Rabid Devils fan here. Terry Sawchuk is the greatest goaltender of all time, followed by Roy, Plante, Hasek, then Brodeur, the rest is then up for debate. Marty is great, but by no means the greatest of all time. The numbers are fantastic, but when I ask myself who I'd want in net for one game only, I'd pick the guys above in that order (except maybe Marty over Hasek because of his stickhandling abilities.)
@ everyone talking about goalies in the league today, the only goalie of all time (so far) who stands up to Brodeur is Patrick Roy, who in fact Broduer has shown great respect for and looked up to him, AKGraphiX91 is a little overzealous, but marty is the best, and will be for awhile i imagine.
there's some good goalies in the league but none of them have marty's consistency
hmm...everyone knows that roy is the best goaler that ever existed and lets say because he did it without the trap...and even now hes not the best simply because is team is kind of weaker then before
Doesn't matter what anyone says. Martin Brodeur is the best goalie in the game. Don't believe me? After the 2009-2010 season is over, Martin Brodeur will have broken every major NHL Goalie Record.
1xA7x I agree martin brodeur is the best goalie and he actually scored once on a empty net from a far away distance so those other guys who play goalie don't be jealous.
Brodeur is my favorite goalie and who i think is the best golie in the NHL. I was saying that you shouldn't be sorry for having a different opinion. It's not like u hurt someone.
Eight. So it's feasible for him to reach that when he's back from his injury. HE also needs eight shutouts for the all time shutout record. That likely has to wait until next year though.

Best Save of the Year?!? That was sheer luck, Lundqvist owns Brodeur when it comes to greatest saves of all time, and the best part of it all is that Lundqvist hasn't even been in the NHL for half the amount of year Broudeur has, and has already been in contention for the Venzina three consecutive times. GO RANGERS!!!
sorry but that shot would have gone in so easy on lundqvist, shooters are learning that lundqvist is weak up high, his nhl numbers get worse and worse every year if you look at them, id say his nhl days are numbered
I'd say you're wrong. A lot of goalies are weak up high and their days aren't "numbered." Martin Brodeur is weak in a lot of areas. His five-hole is awful and his rebound control is the worst in the league by far.
His rebound control is the worst in the league? You must be insane. He has some of the best rebound control of all time. He kicks pucks out perfectly to spots where shooters can't get the rebounds, and his pad control is by far better than any butterfly goalie. Gooster, please take off your Rangers hat when you make a comment and maybe watch a game Brodeur plays in, instead of making ridiculous irrational statements.
I'm not a Rangers fan, Bob, just a guy who's played goalie all my life. Martin Brodeur's rebound control is bad simply by virtue of his athletic, relfexes-driven style. Richter was the same way. So is Turco. Brodeur is great at a lot of things, but controlling his rebounds is something he usually leaves up to his defensemen.
I too have played goalie all my life, and your statements about Brodeur aren't true. Martin Brodeur's pad control is simply astounding, and his rebound control is excellent in comparison to other goaltenders in the NHL. Brodeur puts the puck exactly where it needs to be so a shooter can't get to it. Just because the puck goes to one of his OWN defenseman, does not mean he has poor rebound control by any means. His rebound control is a big reason why he's currently a back to back Vezina winner.
dude lol what the fuck? don't his stats speak for himself? really.. i don't understand people who say Marty sucks and lets say (for example) Backstrom is better or Nabakov is better,, the only goalies I see challenging Marty are either Luongo and Mason (if he keeps up his stellar play) but currently Marty is the best goaltender and if anyone disagrees it's about time you let go of your jealousy.. I bet if he was on your team you wouldn't say that :)
I never said the guy was terrible. Is he the best goalie playing right now? Frankly, no. Just because he sets a record, which is more a testament to his consistency and longevity, doesn't mean he's the best right now. Tim Thomas has had an outstanding season, so have Kipprusoff and Nabokov. Brodeur has missed too much time this season to be really considered. Luckily for you Devils fans though, he'll probably have more left in the tank than usual for the playoffs because of his injury.
Hmm ok I gotta agree with you there, but so far the games he HAS played in, he played really well. I agree, Nabakov has been great but Kipprusoff does NOT have a better season this year than Marty. Infact if Marty was playing behind a team like his, he would be playing better. Statistically, Kipprusoff is only in the top 5 in the wins column (# 1) and his absence in the other 3 only shows that his team plays great offense! Thanks To Marty's injury, the devils learned to score..
& sorry I should have been a little more specific by saying he is just a better goaltender OVERALL than most of these overrated ones in the league today. :) Definitely, I'd say the best goaltender this year is Thomas. He has risen to the occasion to show the doubters how well he can play with a very good offensive/defensive team in front of him.
Kipprusoff is first in the league in shots faced, facing almost 30 a game. And he still has a chance to break the single season wins record, although I doubt he will as they'll probably rest him down the stretch. But he's definitely going to be in Vezina contention on wins alone.
Mm hmm he is, but as he faced almost 30 shots a game, he has also gave up the most goals in the entire league (tied with Marty Turco). For him to still have so many wins, you GOT TO give credit to his team for playing awesome offense.
While it's true that the Flames are 3rd in goals for per game, Kipper doesn't have nearly the defense that Brodeur, Nabokov, or Thomas have. He and Turco have also played more games than anyone this year, which skews the GA stat. And no, the GAA and saves% aren't stellar this year, but he has proven he can post great numbers before. He put up a 1.69 a few years back, which I think is still the modern-era record. The Vezina should come down to Thomas, Nabby, Kipper, and Mason.
Marty is so amazing. Even after a save like that he just smiles and laughs, then goes back to being incredible. Best goalie in NHL history. No one will ever be as good as him. Ever.
@njdss4 um ok Brodeur is my favourite goalie right now but he isn't the best goalie in NHL history.. There are goalies who were better like Patrick Roy who's my all time favourite and somewhat even Terry Sawchuk. Stepping out of the NHL though I can think of one goalie who might better and that's Vladislav Tritiak.
You cant compare Brodeurs shutouts with Sawchucks, what Terry did was with freakishly small and unsafe (compared to what is now) equipment (like pads and tight jersey unlike roy/brodeur who got oversized and soft stuff to guarantee that puck not go in the net). Sawchuk risked his whole body to play there every time.
^_^ Marty Marty the one man party. Got the dude on my wall for a reason. Even if he isn't always the top of the stats (and sometimes he is) he's always one of the most enjoyable to watch. All hail the man!
how can u say that?!?!? He couldnt see the puck.. he had like 5 ppl in front of him and he was able to keep his composure to make the save. it was no different from making a save with a blindfold on. pretty bad ass if u ask me
