I was going to put schluter tile rails around the edge of my counter-top, but painted aluminum and plastic were all that were available, I was hoping for stainless :(
thats a pretty nice vid. actually showed the installation instead of boy'o placeing the crap on the floor and cut clip presto everything fell into place.
I just used the Ditra XL to tile my kitchen. The XL is thicker for matching up to 3/4 inch hardwood. It matched perfectly with no transition in height. Just be prepared to spend a lot more time troweling in the mortar. to ensure there is no air pockets in the waffle cavities. As an amateur I found this to be a long process but likely still faster then lugging in all the cement board, securing it and ending up with a floor raised above adjoining rooms.

It's Modified under the Ditra Non-Modified for setting the Tile
Mapei kerabond/keralastic thinset is Highly recommended just add the polymer and there's your Modified for the Ditra and just add water and there's your non-modified for setting the tile
Is ceramic tiling related to masonry in any way? because doing masonry (bricks and stones) is hard on your back and in 10-15 years i want to find soething a little less physical
I drank the orange cool aide years ago and haven't looked back. This system honestly changed how my company looked at installs. We have installed hundreds of showers and tubs using Schluter Kerdi and have yet to have an issue.
We want to put ceramic tile on our enclosed porch (concrete slab ). We are going to use ditra to avoid crack in a future. any body know if I can use versabond thin-set ? I look at home depot, they have flexi bond and versabond..but flexi bond quite costly for our limited budget..any suggestion for different brand ?.tks
with ditra mat you need a non-modifie thinset mortar, the thinset will never cure out fully if it is modified. brand does not matter but you want a NON-MODIFIED. no polymer, no acrylic....
Does anyone know if I can use Versabond thinset instead of flexibond? I already have versabond... don't want it to go to waste! Thanks in advance to anyone who can provide good feedback! :)
I install tile for a living and have used schluter products for about 7years now! I have tryed the unmodified thinset thing and after talking to a schluter rep it is best to always use modified thinset on ever application! I had to go back on a job that the unmodified thinset was not bonding to the ditra we reinstalled the job with all modified thinset and it still there 3 years later good as new!! I use all modified products its always worked better for me
The thinset they are using to set ditra is a modified thinset. Modified thinset is used when the surface your setting over can draw out the moisture of the mortar while it's curing. When you set tile over ditra you MUST use un-modified thin set. Unmodified thinset mortar can cure without moisture release. With ditra moisture will not go through it unlike hardibacker, durock, wonderboard, and plywood. If you are setting ditra over concrete use un-modified thinset to set the ditra and the tile.
you should use flexibond thinset, for floors. it's probably what they're using. and it's the best stuff out there. it's a little pricey like 25 bucks for a 50 lb bag, but it's worth it
I proffesionally install hard surfaces and can assure you that Schluter products are state-of-the-art. All of their products have revolutionized tile installation and I highly reccomend them.
yes a heating mesh will work it goes below the initial thinset, ditra will NOT melt or stop the heat BPI sells to retailers and stine lumber in LA sells to shoppers I don't know about lowes or home depot though
Stine Lumber sells it. If your a retailer than try BPI. Also a radiant system WILL work. it goes under the ditra and thinset. Ditra will NOT stop the heat. I just took the Schluter class in new orleans. This is the future of tile installation.
i am a professional and yes this is the future of tile installation. Lowes and home depot doesn't sell it yet but in lousiana you can buy at stine lumber and if your a retailer than call bpi a heating mesh does NOT damage the ditra you put it under the ditra and thinset, ditra does not hold heat back
That was very impressive. I was skeptical at first, but it really does make sense to use a system like that. Does Lowe's or The Home Depot sell Schlüter products?
Schulter systems are great - I have used them in my bathroom remodels (I am not a professional but have a lot of home improvement experience) and have had nothing but great success. For a DIYer like me, their shower assembly system was a godsend as I was dreading dealing with a shower pan.
Looks to easy.

I've been stressing over transporting backerboard since I only have a car now. This looks so much easier and better to use. I think it's worth a try!

If their product is as good as the video, I'm sold. They could have chosen a decent looking tile though.

Is this product really that great?
I've always just screwed down hardi backer board or cement floated over the wood sub-floor. If necessary, I will apply Compseal Gold as a slip sheet.
Maybe I'm just too old school!

@yf1726 I always use versabond , & never have a problem with it.
Just make sure that dont over water it when mixing it.
You can even install the tile right to the concrete using versabond, I have been doing it for many years & never have a problem.

I'm renovating my 12 x 5 bathroom. Do I use durock on the floor before Ditra? or do I just Ditra on the plywood?

The "Holmes On Homes" crew uses DITRA with radiant heat mesh in just about every show.
I wish I'd found DITRA before I renovated my 1/2 bath. I'll use it on my full bath next.
