Occupy Oakland is not hurting corporations. it's hurting small businesses. And the whole movement's message has been muddled. What should be about corruption and greed, is become instead about police brutality. It's a shame.
Does it make sense that the mayor would waste almost 2 million dollars to shut down the camp, which could have saved a whole school district from being shut down.
@evilfeeshy lol. you have no idea what you're writing about. corporate lobbyists memos are being leaked left and right about how to stop the occupy movement because it's going to have lasting damages on their class interests.
Smashing windows is so much more violent than causing hundreds of thousands of loss revenue by shutting down a port. And powerful reactions to protesters smashing windows is much more important than powerful reactions to bankers and corporations murdering hundreds of thousands and holding the entire planet hostage.
What was done at the port was REAL. Shutting down a center of capitalism for a day shows the true power of the movement, while people burning pallets and trashcans and smashing the windows of local shops make us look like angry children. The anarchists have a real grievance, and your right, compared to the wholesale murder and destruction caused by corporations, a smashed window means nothing. However, to have this movement grow, we need to work with our local community.
@raleighl Are you a symbolic protest or a fight to win? We had 150,000-200,000 people show up throughout the day. I think a little direct action is justified.
@virindi1 dude, there is no way in hell that there were 150,000 people out there. I'm sorry, I go to a lot of A's games and I know how to gauge a crowd.... we had probably around 20,000, maybe 25,000 if you count people who showed up downtown but didn't make the march. And you don't "fight to win" by spray painting a Whole Foods Market, it just makes us look childish. Those people are just white kids from Danville and Walnut Creek. Not the 99%, not Occupy Oakland.
@originalfunkyfry Throughout the entire day we easily had 150-200,000 show up. Just the march on the port alone saw, bare minimum, 75,000. I don't know where you were throughout the day, but I was all over the place thanks to my bike and the amount of people present was absolutely amazing. Go do some research on Whole Foods and why they were targeted, google "right wing whole foods" to get started.
@raleighl Agree with you 100%. Well, I am still out here trying to represent the good things about Occupy Oakland, and it's always inspiring to look back at the hours of the Port takeover. Looking forward to 12/12 but with a heavy heart remembering how things got out of our control in the early morning.
Very good and I support all who protest and seek a redress of grievances from Gov't. Good to see people trying to stop the few Jugheads who whould rather commit acks of violence. Keep up the goood work.
Thanks man, it was a beautiful, inspiring event overall, and despite the black block kids, it shows that the occupy movement is energizing people to change their communities and politics.
good to see a peaceful protest turn into a violent protest
