  • @gc8impreza98 bro are you really thinking of running that much HP with that turbo??

  • What do you think about boring and honing this engine on a bridgeport? Should work ok? I have one in my garage and was thinking about just lining it up with a co ax indicator and going .010-.020 over on a junked motor.

  • another big question since you do a lot of blocks, WHAT ARE THE OEM CYL WALLS rated at for the o6 sti USDM model, i'm trying to take all those facts into consideration since the gt4088r i have can produce 700 plus whp with the right mods, some people tell me not to do the sleeves other tell me is the best way to build a block, please let me know THANKS

  • 06 sti with a gt4088r just pulled motor out to do the build the right way to support that turbo since i was luckily running on oem pistons and rings,i need to do some good pistons and rods, which brings me to my question, should i do a bigger displacement on the block, like BOre or will i run good if i use some STD JE PISTONS with their JSP skirts,im building the whole bottom end and any advice from you will be greatly appreciated since i seen you do such great work, don't sleep is a waste

  • that VW block sure is Good.

  • Thats some yummy looking oil!

  • is he stoned???

  • im sorry for my stupidity but i had to ask...is that oil leaking from that machine?

im 15 years old and im from croatia...im headed for mechanical engineer and im curious about that stuff so i just ask ppl about that...

  • @zolja95

Its for lubrication to prevent damage

  • @Bones12x2 tnx mate :)

  • @zolja95 Its a lubricating oil, not leaking.

  • theme song FTW!

  • PLEASE OH PLEASE GET SOME SLEEEEEEPPP!!!!!!!!!

  • I wonder how much that honing machine costs.

  • Why no torque plate?

  • so thaaatts why oil is so expensive

  • damn sir u have one nice ass garage

  • ZR1 IS KING!!!

  • @Marshmallowrex I am not sure. I would think though that you may want to add another rad fan, or a oil cooler of some sort because those larger pistons will cause a bit more heat. Personally I would just keep the same diameter pistons that the cylinders have been bored to. It will save you a ton of wor later in the future.

  • @Marshmallowrex I depends are you boring it or honing. If you hone your only taking a real small amount of material off. You shouldnt need to go any sizes up if you hone it correctly depending on what the cylinder surface is like.

  • @Marshmallowrex 81 mm bore??? Hone it to meet mfgr's recommended clearance.

  • @fiatnutz~WHAT?!... NO TORQUE PLATE!?

  • Man amazing video. Thanks a lot! It´s interisting and fun for subaru owners and cars lovers.

    Thanks!

  • what qualifications do i need to work at a machine shop? this shit looks awesome.

  • @chillincruisin

please leave the real work to the pros, why don't you go and work on your sister's bicycle or better yet, why don't you just go and smoke a joint or tag some walls u fucktard

  • @lisekpl1 christ, what pissed you off, how bout you go clean the sand out of your vag

  • Is it possible to keep "old" pistons after getting cylinders honed?...perhaps by getting new rings???

  • John Edwards - is a re@l duDE :D

  • 目のくまが怖い。

  • If you are honing a block, doesnt the honing takes some metal of the inside of the cilinder casing? And does the piston still works properly?

I mean, if you use the same piston from the old block and put it in a honed block, dont you have space between the piston and the inside wall of the cilinder casing?

And does it increases the enginevolume?

  • @eddohan - 2 things, you hone to take the bore oversize, or you hone for effect. Honing oversize removes a specific amount of material that requires new pistons to fit properly and it does increase displacement. Honing for effect generally involves removing about .001" of material to enable the rings to seat and work properly so there not measurable increase in displacement.

  • @fiatnutz

ahaa, so there are two ways of honing. Thanks :-)

  • Do you offer torque plate honing for models such as D16A^,SR20,4AGE, and EJ25~, ?

  • @station2station - Yes.

  • i would love to devote my time working for shops like yours..

  • How much woul;d it be for my sr20det??

  • Great videos

How much generally does it cost to refurbish a moderate condition v6 engine fully? And how healty would the engine after all of the processes?

How will the performance and fuel consumption change?

  • Awesome job!

  • Excellent video.

Does the pumping tune come on every time you start the machine?

  • @joe588 lol I HOPE!

  • do you need a special fixture for honing and boring boxer motors?

  • You are the BEST!

  • Nice work, thanks for sharing.

  • Also, what is the time ill be out my STi?

  • whats the price of doing this?

  • Honing a 4-cylinder runs around $140

  • That's not bad. Thanks for the info.

  • are subaru blocks 2 separate halves? i only saw 2 cylinders. this is the 2.5i correct?

  • Yes, all boxer engines have two halves.

  • why no torqueplate on top of the block? especially since its open deck?

  • could you imagine how many different headplates you'd need to cover the possibilities? torque plates are nice but usually only avalible for a limited number of blocks. SBC, BBC, SBF most likely.

  • wicked wicked vid thank u

  • Can you do honing in a end mill?

  • Good work sir!

  • What is honing? Does it have to do with making the cylinder walls true in relativity of the crank? What differentiates it from boring out cylinder walls? From what I understand, boring out cylinder walls removes material, and has some significant displacement increase.

  • Honing is about getting the cylinder wall surface rough. U scratch up the surface so on a magnified level u see LOTS of tiny peaks n valleys. In these valleys the oil is retained. Its all about oil retention. ;)

  • Honing is a manufacturing process that produces a precision surface on a workpiece by scrubbing an abrasive stone against it along a controlled path. Honing is primarily used to improve the geometric form of a surface, but may also improve surface texture.

In other words improve the performance and have a more smoother and quieter operation.

  • @AWDfreak : Honing is much more precise than boring. Honing is always required after boring. Honing is also used to prepare the cylinder for new piston rings: The left roughness of the walls determines the running-in time for an engine. Too rough and it eats the rings, too smooth and the rings will never seal properly (causing oil and compression leakage).

  • Subaru has Nikasil Cylinder? Thank

  • No, the Subaru has an iron liner/cylinder.

  • Johnnie boy, do u use a proper honing machine?.... by which i mean, a machine that slows down the rotating speed according to the reduction in vertical speed at around TDC and BDC ??

  • No honing plate?

  • nice video

  • cool video.

  • ...... i wish my girlfriend be here... hehehe

  • че мужик сказал?

  • сказал, что субару говно :)

  • so basically its bored out .020????

  • You're a nice guy sir.

But relax, go have a time on a trip or something, and get some sleep ;)

Thanks for making so much videos for us though :)

  • @Naturepheonix~ "get some sleep".... AAAAAAAHAHAHAH!.

  • really neat and informative video. never knew how blocks were honed and things like that. nice work!

  • So, do boxer engines have an oil pan like a conventional engine? how does one go about removing the crankshaft?

  • Yeah they have an oil pan like any other engine and to remove the crank you'd have to split the engine/casing.

  • yo miata guy... that was just the other side of it.. each side has 2 cylinders

  • could somebody explain a subbie engine 2 me? i've never worked on them b4... i thgouht they had 4 cylinders but i didnt see 4... i kno i'm a tool 4 not knowing but i gotta learn it!

  • subaru's have boxer engines, which means they are "flat" instead of a v shape or inline. so two pistons go to the right and two pistons go to the left, just type "boxer engine" into google images for a visual

  • they have 4 cylinders...look up boxer engine or more technically correct horizontally opposed engine

  • its a flat four. so basically its two cylinders that are horizontally opposed. Subaru uses "Boxer Engines" to lower the center of gravity

  • You look like a very old sad dog. I enjoy your movies tho :)

  • Get a sleep study, it appears you might sleep apnea.

  • whats honing and whats it for?

  • is that the original block? or is a worked block.. open deck?

  • This is an EJ257 STi block, yes this can be classified as an open deck.

  • Very informative, thanks much, John.

  • What was the instrument called that measured surface texture of the cylinders?

The instrument gave a reading of 24.7 - you mentioned that it was in the guidelines - where are the guidelines found to make sure they are within spec?

  • I am using a profilometer to measure surface texture. Each manufacturer will publish specifications for surface finish requirements. This one was between 20,0 and 30,0 Ra.

  • Dope, i want to get my inline 6 cylinder engine bored to 3.0 litres

i took a Machining class in the fall, i found it to be very fun

  • How much does it cost to have this done?

  • i love this, real car people at work. no rice, no idiots, just raw mechanics and engineering at work

  • lol very true, however I cant help but notice that you said "no rice" yet he is working on a Suby block :)

  • Master crafts man! Never seen anyone be so meticulous! What was the block cleaned in? I use an ultrasonic bath bout 45degC Comes up beautifull+Cleanes all tiny unreachable places. :)

  • just took your number down. will be taking my subi in =) see you soon!

  • you ever notice all good engine builders look like they could be related? lol this guy looks just like my machine shop manager back home in va. about time i saw a video that was not utter bull crap. nice work, long live the sunnen!

  • John just did my sti block. I definitely trust his work.

  • i love subaru....

  • thanks for all your videos, very enjoyable, and i have learnt to appreciate the skill of the engineer little abit more.

  • HERE HERE!

  • good engine builder

  • u sound like u really know what ur doin, if i was local ud be doing my engine work.

  • fantastic videos, love to watch how its done, you just further confirmed my desires to be an automotive engineer, keep em coming

  • great videos,if i was 17 would have inspired me into auto engineering never realised it was so interesting.please more on fiat x19,also see dallara x19 videos ,di silvio racing ,those engines rev,

  • good video mate keep up the good work nice one

  • thats one of the machines i need a honing machine also i need a crankshaft grinder and boring machine any suggestions where i can purchase such machines?

  • Look on ebay or call your local automotive machine tool dealer/representative. I used to work for Sunnen, but they are getting out of the automotive engine rebuilding equipment segment, but you can still buy vertical hone from them, figure about $40K for the latest & greatest. My CV616 was about $36K delivered a few year back, but that machine is now out of production. I do have a Berco boring machine that I am going to be selling, probably in the $4500 range.

  • Really cool

  • Thanks for posting this. I love watching this sort of thing.
