Watched this movie as a teenager and liked it. Watched this movie as a born again Christian when I was 34 and cried at this scene of Alvin's conversion. Thanks for sharing. :-)
This is one of the greatest scenes ever filmed, from one of the greatest American movies ever made. I first saw this scene as a child, and I've remembered it across the the decades.
WHO says religion was "good" for our fathers? religion burned our fathers and mothers on the crosses, cut them to pices with its sords, and caused constant fear, neurosis, psychosis, misery and lack of freedom and happiness for millions of peoples in the world for thousands of years, and it still does all that.... i guess that is what they mean by "good old religion"... and that is what "good" means in religion: an old incurable disease forever.
@arzadi11 Maybe misguided religion has corrupted the good name of Diety, but to say it is inherently evil is ignorant, who can deny the overall good of religion? Religion was intended to uplift man not drag him down and anything that drags men down is not religion simple as that. Churches lead the world in private donations and many (including the LDS Church) have donated over a billion dollars in charity in the past two decades alone. Please hold back on the name calling. Thanks!
@jmansky1861 First of all, i never name-called religion, i said the TRUTH about it. u would insult someone if he is NOT what your insult means. religion is waht i said it is and more "an old incurable disease".. secondly, the evils of religion started by the fact that it tries to "uplift" people. why does a man need to be uplifted? isn't it the same as narcissism? and narcissism is one of the most destructive human instincts, especially cultural narcissism, and both mean "religion".
@arzadi11 Hey I don't want to start an argument but I think you are grouping all religions as one. Remember Religion is not black and white. Yes several Religions in the past such as the Romans, the Norse, the Celts, the Egyptians and the Catholics have killed for Religion but that was the age of the old. I can tell you that the Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Mormons, Mennonites modern Buddists and taoists and a several others have never killed because of religion.
@JCKustom13 in history, all of these nations u mentioned(& all other nations in the world)have killed and repressed & justified their crimes by their religions(all religions). ok let's forget the physical destructions caused by religions, but don't u agree that all religions have done mental destructions too? religion represses free thoughts, cuz a believer is forced not to question the words of his/her god written in their holy books & if they do they feel guilt. no freedom of mind.
@arzadi11 But the Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, Mormons, and Mennonites all weren't formed till after the American Colonies existed (the Pentecostal church not untill the the 1890s) and none of those Churches ever promote violence or killing or have any government involvement. Also how does religion repress free thought? Last I checked you are free to believe or not to believe.
@JCKustom13 ok, i agree that the churches of the new world did not cause any harm to humanity, but in the old world all kinds of religions caused many crimes.
on the repression of free thoughts and ideas by religion, i meant IF I BELIEVE then i can't question the words of my god then this would cause the repressions on my free thoughts. but since i dont believe in any religion i'm free mentally. how can i disagree with the God i believe? i must only obey Him. God is authoritarian!
@arzadi11 I have one good question for you. If you believe that religion represses free thoughts, then why did you take time out of your dad to go comment on religious videos?
@JCKustom13 i don't know what u mean by your "good question"? what do u mean by "why did u take time out of your dad" if u'r asking why am i commenting on religious videos, i have a good answer for you, "it's none of your business!" i comment on anything i want. do u see how u religious people are? u want me to repress my questions as u do in ur repressed mind. no, i'm not like u. i'm a free thinker, and i hope humnity will be free from the repressions of religion in the future too!
Yer darn tootin Alvin you were quite the man/soldier made people proud to have such a hero. I don't think they could have picked a better actor for the part of Sgt. York than Gary Cooper.
thank you for reminding me what our country was made of and the corageous people that made our country the most powerful nation under GOD......... it was not until our people got awy from the TRUTH tat it began to fall apart.....jmcm
Anyone know that one movie about the guy that was fighting for the rights of a teacher who was incarcerated for teaching evolution. Then in the movie a huge mob goes to a famous lawyers hotel singing this song, and then to the teachers cell that he was being kept in?
What I've always liked about this little chant is how it has nothing to do with one's personal faith or how he it interprets it, but how it supposedly worked for everyone else and has kept them all in line, so it's either follow it steadfastly without any questions or burn in hell.
Great illustration of how, as unfortunate as it is, many Christians see their faith.
Contrast this beautiful, touching scene -- which is all about love and kindness -- with the tragic, frightening parade scene in "Inherit the Wind" where this same song, "Give Me That Old Time Religion" is used to whip people up into a paranoid rage.
In watching "Inherit the Wind," you'll notice that the people of "Heavenly Hillsborough" NEVER sing "Makes me love everybody," the second verse that Walter Brennan leads in "Sgt. York."
This beautiful scene is all about God's love -- expressed by God's people -- for a man who is troubled and angry. The preacher played by Walter Brennan is a loving, patient and kind man; he embodies what Christianity is truly about. It is because of this love and friendship that Gary Cooper's character is drawn into the church. Notice, the friendly smiles on the people's faces. Love, not self-righteous, judgmental behavior is what Jesus the Christ commanded of us... love can change lives!
A capella choral singing (without musical instruments) is, unlike most churches, the way of the traditional Church of Christ but usually a more straight-laced style than this. Even though I'm not religious, it's good enough for me.
I am the antichrist, I am divinity, I am the coming storm, I am the sun that keeps you warm, I am salvation, I am the greatest sin, I am your synthetic god. I am what dwells within
I love the way they sing this song here and I love Walter Brennan to pieces!! That's way more real than acting on his part!!! OOO, I feel so good!!!!!
@quarterexchange If by "people in the early 1900's" running America you are referring to progressive, forward-thinking leaders like Theodore Roosevelt, I would agree with your statement. But I suspect that you're not.
And look what happens in the present! Gary Cooper chants Vetschiller,s Green Red. Look for: The Green, The Red and The Rules: Groen Rood in het wilde westen. I've been waiting for this my whole forever!!
@quarterexchange i wouldn't say the early 1900s was when we were at our greatest... remember that's when we were occupying the Philippines and waging a brutal counterinsurgency war that resulted in massacres of entire villages and concentration camps. Jim Crowe was in full swing. Also some big problems with monopolies, since antitrust legislation wasn't as good.
my great uncle served with him, said he was one dead eye shot for certain.
course my dad always said after coming back from WWII, you can kill a lot of privates on the other side and the war goes on, not till they start from the top down will war be outlawed.
This movie was on today on TCM. Lately I have been feeling depressed and have been having an on, off relationship with God. After I saw this seen, I felt god again.
i really love this filml !!

This is exactly like the church I attended as a boy in the mountains of
West Virginia. Kerosene, (or "coal oil") lamps were used for night
services and a reed organ, (pumped by foot power), upright piano
and various string instruments, such as banjo, mandolin, guitar,
fiddle, autoharp & string bass were brought by members.
A Capella singing is beautiful & we would sing with men on one
side and women on the other. Then the entire bluegrass "orchestra"
would join in mighty praise. AWESOME!

My wife's grandfather had his own verse that he would sing at the end almost every time we sang this song in church. This was back in the 1960s.
Here it goes.
It will make the Christian holler
When it gets beneath his collar
And it doesn't cost a dollar
It's good enough for me

This movie uses the Hymn in the most positive sense. "Inherit the Wind" takes it the other way.
I guess it's not what you sing, it's how you sing it.
