i have the remington 597 and i love this rifle, i have 2, 30 round mags and its a blast to dump 30 rounds in 5 seconds the accuracy is great even with the iron sights and i like the stiff trigger pull...
well u r just shooting the rifle i had the one like you have with the grey stock it had a very hard triger pull i sometimes thaught i hadnt released the safty it was that bad also acuracy n mine went to pot after 50 yrds looks like a good rifle and i love remington products butt i would advise any one to check trigger b4 buying somethin u cant do at wal-mart
@rjreid1958 Any place you can physically hold the gun you should be able to test trigger pull. My trigger pull is quite stiff as is pretty much the standard on modern semi automatic 22's. Harder trigger pulls = less accidents and less court cases. It pulls easier over time as it wears, but it's never been a problem. If a rifle will shoot half MOA at 50 meters, all else being equal the dispersion at 100 meters will be 1 MOA. Not taking into account .22lr bullet peculiarities/velocity issues.
@grannman It is generally inadvisable to dry fire a rimfire rifle which makes it difficult to get a feel for the trigger at the store. Bring a snap-cap and ask the sales person if you can use it in the rifle. I am not sure what you are talking about with the accuracy though. 0.5 MOA at 50 yards is 0.5 MOA at 100 yards and 200 yards etc. MOA stands for Minute of Angle which is approximately 1" at 100 yards (1.047" to be precise). MOA is a measure of radius and not a measure of distance.
1. Per part one of this review, dry firing a rimfire by holding the bolt slightly open won't result in the firing pin hitting anything. That will give a general idea of how stiff the trigger is.
2. replace MOA in my comment with inch. That's what I intended. Had senior moment.
@grannman A couple of friends on YouTube have these, they say they have jamming problems. You mentioned something about it in the first part of the review, I think you said it was only the plastic mags, correct?
@HedgehogOutdoors I have no experience with the Marlin but I much prefer the 597 over the 10/22 for size, easier to srip, symmetrical action, accuracy, last shot hold open, overall design - floating barrel etc.
@Sgtlaplante Inside the the action at the back of the receiver there is a rubber 'plug' - a buffer. When the bolt cycles rearward it stops against this rubber buffer and the springs then cycle the bolt forward.
Great shooting! I just picked up one of these rifles and I'm looking forward to giving it a test fire. One suggestion for you.... I noticed you're awfully quick in coming off the trigger after taking your shot. You might consider a bit more follow-through with your trigger finger. Not trying to dis your accomplishments, just a suggestion from a former coach/ NRA Master competitor/instructor. That night help your occasional "flyer". Keep up the great shooting & Vids!!
@LowOIL Thanks pal. I hadn't heard of using rice. I'd use sand in your support bags as I would assume it would pack more solidly with less air space than rice.
I have managed to hole the plastic bags a couple of times, but if you're paying attention they can last - particularly if you double up the bags.
@grannman no way i shoot 300 yards in the summer with my marlin bolt action. it is a lot of fun and it still hits hard. You can plink all day for 20 bucks. i love that and nice grouping
@bigrockslider Would be great fun for target shooting, but it would be unethical as a hunter to try and kill efficiently at that distance. Grouping would be massively affected by wind at that distance. Grouping at 300 meters would be dinner plate +
I just purchased this exact same gun today. It came with a red dot scope. Can I install that scope right ontothe dovetails, or do I need another set of rails?
@biblesnbarbells if the mounts you have for your sight are dovetail mounts you can install it directly on top of the rifle. If they are weaver mounts you will need a weaver base. Weaver mounts will not fit on a dovetail base.
I'm in Canada, I have very few friends who shoot and can help me out. I've just about got my firearms license, and I want to pick up a .22 that is going to be very easy to maintain and mount a scope on. Is the 597 a good choice, or would you recommend a Ruger 10/22 or perhaps Mossberg instead?
@Cmitty33 Personally I rate the 597 the winner of your list. In all honesty I can't recommend this gun highly enough. The 597 has the advantage over the 10/22 in accuracy out of the box, a good symmetrical action, last shot hold open, more accessible mag release and easier and faster mag insertion/removal design, and imo better stock sizing. It has a flush magazine which is a bonus over the mossberg. You don't want these little mags protruding below the stock to catch on stuff. I like my 597
@Cmitty33 Defiantly the Remington! (but dont get the VTR version its not as accurate and it feels weird in your hand) the remington has 1/4 in groupings at 100 yrds, feels good in your hands, and most of all its fun! its very low maintenance and i have a $140 center point scope mounted on it solid. if you havent made your decision yet make sure you order a target hammer to lighten the trigger pull to about 2.5 lbs!
No recoil .. my wife of 100 lbs loves shooting this thing .. perfect for a woman if you ask me. In fact I gave her mine so I could move up a bit in calibre :)
I have the same rifle, free float the barrel, use wolf MT ammo, and i can get under .20 groups at 50 yards, your hand is messing up your groups, the wind is getting you also, BUT the CCI ammo is hurting you the most. i only shoot wolf MT from now on, and i have a plethora of all ammo out there left over from testing. CCI wasnt impressive to me at all.

The accuracy from the rifle was amazing, and ir rarely jammed, but the 597 just isn't durable in my eyes.
I never really use protection for my ears with this gun its quiet enough for me, but my S&W comp pistol is loud as hell thats when i use protection great gun this is keep having fun man. Love this gun
WOW-Great review of this rifle. Ive been going back and forth over which type of .22 rifle I want. Either the Marlin, Remington or the Ruger. So far - Im really impressed with the quality look of the Remington and the nice accuracy of it as seen in this video. 50yards seems pretty easy with this rifle - im very curious to see it fire @ 100yards...Thx for the review - I think Im sold.
I have the LSS model. With iron sights it is surprisingly accurate, my fifty yard group was under 2 inches (using my range box as a make shift gun rest) It fires most all ammo without a hitch. Mine seems to like the heavier 38-40g bullets. If you plan on getting the 30 rd mag, make sure you keep them clean. Just mounted a scope and bipod cant wait to try it out.
I have this rifle, and I've found it to be very accurate with the iron sights. But it must be cleaned after probably 100 rounds, or it jams quite regularly. I would recommend getting a Ruger 10/22. However, I got my 597 or only $120 new, so it's great for the price.
Excellent shooting. Do you think a 22lr can take down a large pig or animal with 1-2 shots at the range you are shooting at? I want to order this gun for where I live, it would be really great if you could help me assess if the 22lr has enough power for this.
Hi, .22lr on pigs is definitely not something I'd recommend unless you knew exactly what you were doing and exactly where to shoot, i.e. in a domestic animal cull situation. Also you'd have to be very close to a big pig and get an absolutely perfect shot placement into the heart in my opinion. At 50 meters a shot anywhere else, including the head, is going to have negligible effect on even medium sized pigs. Pigs 3 feet in length or smaller would be the only responsible size for .22lr.
just a tip.. Double up the front bags so you don't have your hand under the rifle. It's just one more thing to worry about when trying to keep steady if you have your hand under the rife.
I think the 597 will be my next .22 rifle. I have the savage 64 right now its a great rifle but I like the remington better it looks easier to take down the stock looks better and I like how the clips are not in the way. The clips on the savage stick out too much and are in a bad spot they also wear out after 600 to 800 rounds. $15 a clip thats not cheap.
I've found my metal mags work fine. However I have once used cartridges with longer bullets than normal which stuck in the magazine and would not feed. If you are having trouble with certain ammo, load the magazine and tap the base against something hard to jostle the cartridges into position. I don't find this necessary in general as I stick with the same cartridges that I've zeroed the rifle and I have no issues.
Well it depends on the user. You have to be more disciplined with a semi auto because there is a tendency not to place your shots carefully because the shooter knows they've got quick follow up shots ready to go. It can potentially give a new shooter sloppy habits as apposed to a basic 'make each shot count' bolt action. In saying that this rifle was my first firearm but I was 23 when I got it so was disciplined and had used an air rifle beforhand. So if the hunter is young then prob not.
try the Savage Mark 2. it is bolt action, very accurate, comes with a decent sized metal magazine, and is a very nice beginner varmint hunting rifle. also, if you want a very nice, but cheap scope, try the Bushnell Rimfire scope. it is about $30, and it has a 3x-9x adjustable zoom.
Then why does it matter what your grandparents get you? Go exercise your Second Amendment right and buy your own rifle (assuming of course you're a US citizen).
get a savage bolt action...i group 3/4 in. at 60 yards shooting down hill...i was using remington bulk pack ammo...but i made them more aero dynamic and accurate by pushing a #9 shot (shotgun bb`s..really small) in the hollow point hole...i shot 10 rounds for that group with a bipod and a 4x32 scope
There are undoubtedly more accurate rifles around as you say. However a bolt action isn't a semi and I bought this rifle because I was specifically looking for a semi automatic.
@grannman ,in that case then that`s about as good as it gets...i just like to hunt with mine and im gonna put on a 4-12x32 scope on it so i can shoot longer ranges..do u hunt with yours or do u just plink around?
I've used my 597 to hunt NZ #1 pest the possum and have also shot a number of small wild pigs the neighbouring farmer wanted me to get rid of (rooting up his pasture). Couldn't have got the pigs without semi auto function as one in particular took about 7-8 shots of running fire as it sprinted toward the bush line. The whole thing only took a few moments. It was dead in seconds. I value the ability to dispense follow up shots.
I thought everyone knew .22lr would damage your hearing after continual shooting. Definitely isn't smart to not wear hearing protection when target shooting. Even when hunting I wear ear muffs when I'm going to shoot.
I was using federal at first which is garbage ammo, it used to jam the bolt on its way out on random shots. It would actually get stuck between the returning bolt and the chamber. Once i switched to remington high velocity, it worked a lot better....now i switched to CCI stringray which are amazing. Give those a try...
i strongly disagree! my 597 is amazing, i never had had a jam and i use the first gen mag to! if you dont take care of it then i could see how it could jam, but thats not the guns fault, its yours!
I clean my guns after putting any amount of rounds through....if i shot 15 rounds i still go and do a full cleaning...clean your gun everytime you use it and leave a nice coat of oil on all the metal parts. clean off before you use it. It will be more accurate if its clean....and 500 rds is a lot for not cleaining it....
I'd definitely give it a good clean. The bolt hold open arm is pushed up by the orange plastic follower in the magazine as it rises to the top after the last round. Make sure the last shot hold open arm can tilt up and down against its spring. I'd remove it and clean around the area. There is a little pin holding it into the plastic housing which should be removed but be careful not to lose the little spring that holds it down. Note which way the spring goes before removing it.
i can't deny that the .22's affordability is amazing. i still have a Ruger 10/22 but i was just saying that i swapped out my 597 for a Savage .17 and i am much more pleased. Yes it is a bolt action and it has never fail me.
i didn't like my 597 so i sold it and got a savage .17 HMR. i love the .17 so much. 2 in. groups at 100 yards is great for small caliber and the .17 does it with ease!
I take it your Savage is a bolt action? I have two videos (not uploaded) of a semi automatic Magnum Research .17hmr misfiring in my hands. Very unpleasant and had to iron out a flinch after that. Hard to trust a semi auto in that calibre. Nothing beats the price of .22 ammo though and knockdown is good even though the range and ballistics aren't up to .17hmr level. The semi auto allows a lot of firepower on target in a short space of time also.
The majority of people in the world begin from small calibres and at increase of skills pass to more powerful, but in New Zealand even automobiles move to the return side!!:-D
wow, that's one accurate gun there... AND THAT IS SOME KICKIN WIND LOL.
ok stupid question time... do you think this would be a good varmint rifle? it is obviously good in the accuracy department, but in the department of delivering maximum energy to the target, how does it perform? does it put every bit of energy to the target or does it just penetrate. i've heard most .22's just penetrate except with some very good ammo. could you maybe set up a performance test with some reactive targets?
Yeah the wind was picking up as you can hear. This rifle makes an excellent varmint rifle. Transferring energy is really relegated to the realm of the bullet chosen. A nice wide and deep hollow point will inflict heavy damage. At closer ranges bullets will bust completely through varmints - (possums - NZ pest for example) but the damage from high velocity hollow points or even round nosed bullets is sufficient to end things quick. I have found .22lr effective even when passing through the prey.
Gun laws here aren't bad but could be better. However the police have just decided they would like to fallaciously class various thumbhole stocks as pistol grips which would require a special license. Since I own a Dragunov this is bad news. Currently an HK SL8 owner is rightfully looking to contest this in the courts (the underlying law hasn't changed - only police interpretation has changed). All in all our existing gun laws are pretty good. After all they permit me to own a Dragunov Tigr.
Where do you live? Nice landscape!

I have this rifle, and I've found it to be very accurate with the iron sights. But it must be cleaned after probably 100 rounds, or it jams quite regularly. I would recommend getting a Ruger 10/22. However, I got my 597 or only $120 new, so it's great for the price.
binyamj 1 year ago
well no jams for me after shooting 100s of rounds. I do not like the 10/22 action and I prefer accuracy and solid performance over fame.

Excellent shooting. Do you think a 22lr can take down a large pig or animal with 1-2 shots at the range you are shooting at? I want to order this gun for where I live, it would be really great if you could help me assess if the 22lr has enough power for this.
insanomonkey 1 year ago
Hi, .22lr on pigs is definitely not something I'd recommend unless you knew exactly what you were doing and exactly where to shoot, i.e. in a domestic animal cull situation. Also you'd have to be very close to a big pig and get an absolutely perfect shot placement into the heart in my opinion. At 50 meters a shot anywhere else, including the head, is going to have negligible effect on even medium sized pigs. Pigs 3 feet in length or smaller would be the only responsible size for .22lr.
grannman 1 year ago
wat size scope mounts are you using? high or medeum?
kammando21 1 year ago
It is a high profile mount. Originally purchased for my air rifle.
grannman 1 year ago
just a tip..

I don't find this necessary in general as I stick with the same cartridges that I've zeroed the rifle and I have no issues.

would u say this is a good beginner hunter rifle
Cornish1Pirate 2 years ago
Well it depends on the user. You have to be more disciplined with a semi auto because there is a tendency not to place your shots carefully because the shooter knows they've got quick follow up shots ready to go. It can potentially give a new shooter sloppy habits as apposed to a basic 'make each shot count' bolt action. In saying that this rifle was my first firearm but I was 23 when I got it so was disciplined and had used an air rifle beforhand. So if the hunter is young then prob not.
grannman 2 years ago
okay, well ive been target shooting since i was maybe 7 or 8 at a rifle range,so i know what im doing with a rifle
Cornish1Pirate 2 years ago
then I'd definitely recommend it.
grannman 2 years ago
thankyou my man
Cornish1Pirate 2 years ago
try the Savage Mark 2. it is bolt action, very accurate, comes with a decent sized metal magazine, and is a very nice beginner varmint hunting rifle. also, if you want a very nice, but cheap scope, try the Bushnell Rimfire scope. it is about $30, and it has a 3x-9x adjustable zoom.

i love the smell of gun powder but my grandparents won't get me a .22 lr and i would really wanna go squirrel hunting before hunting season ends.
matthewmarrs123 2 years ago
Do they think you are a bit young or what's the story?
grannman 2 years ago
dude.........im 19...not young...
matthewmarrs123 2 years ago
Then why does it matter what your grandparents get you? Go exercise your Second Amendment right and buy your own rifle (assuming of course you're a US citizen).
cnoyes72 2 years ago
i don't know ok they just don't trust me with a gun even though i love the smell of gun powder burning....and the fresh kill i really want a gun.
matthewmarrs123 2 years ago
get a savage bolt action...i group 3/4 in. at 60 yards shooting down hill...i was using remington bulk pack ammo...but i made them more aero dynamic and accurate by pushing a #9 shot (shotgun bb`s..really small) in the hollow point hole...i shot 10 rounds for that group with a bipod and a 4x32 scope
fishnkid1923 2 years ago
There are undoubtedly more accurate rifles around as you say. However a bolt action isn't a semi and I bought this rifle because I was specifically looking for a semi automatic.
grannman 2 years ago
@grannman ,in that case then that`s about as good as it gets...i just like to hunt with mine and im gonna put on a 4-12x32 scope on it so i can shoot longer ranges..do u hunt with yours or do u just plink around?
fishnkid1923 2 years ago
I've used my 597 to hunt NZ #1 pest the possum and have also shot a number of small wild pigs the neighbouring farmer wanted me to get rid of (rooting up his pasture). Couldn't have got the pigs without semi auto function as one in particular took about 7-8 shots of running fire as it sprinted toward the bush line. The whole thing only took a few moments. It was dead in seconds. I value the ability to dispense follow up shots.

vids cool and all, but why does he have ear plugs in... its only a .22
JakePVids 2 years ago
I thought everyone knew .22lr would damage your hearing after continual shooting. Definitely isn't smart to not wear hearing protection when target shooting. Even when hunting I wear ear muffs when I'm going to shoot.
grannman 2 years ago
yeah its smart to be cautious anyway......i just dont know how they do it in war =$
maximuslt90 2 years ago
@maximuslt90 In war, your getting shot at too much to care.
InsaneMentalist 2 years ago
I was using federal at first which is garbage ammo, it used to jam the bolt on its way out on random shots. It would actually get stuck between the returning bolt and the chamber. Once i switched to remington high velocity, it worked a lot better....now i switched to CCI stringray which are amazing. Give those a try...
audigod 2 years ago
i get the same problem with fed's... thanks for the recommendations tho
SpeX2112 2 years ago
I know what the problem is... the 597 sucks, consider your self lucky it's only the last round jamming
zacthebold 2 years ago
i strongly disagree! my 597 is amazing, i never had had a jam and i use the first gen mag to! if you dont take care of it then i could see how it could jam, but thats not the guns fault, its yours!
jeepsforlife86xj 2 years ago
I clean my guns after putting any amount of rounds through....if i shot 15 rounds i still go and do a full cleaning...clean your gun everytime you use it and leave a nice coat of oil on all the metal parts. clean off before you use it. It will be more accurate if its clean....and 500 rds is a lot for not cleaining it....
audigod 2 years ago
I'd definitely give it a good clean. The bolt hold open arm is pushed up by the orange plastic follower in the magazine as it rises to the top after the last round. Make sure the last shot hold open arm can tilt up and down against its spring. I'd remove it and clean around the area. There is a little pin holding it into the plastic housing which should be removed but be careful not to lose the little spring that holds it down. Note which way the spring goes before removing it.

wow.you are a good shooter. you are very steady. you can get a 30 round banana clip for it as well

i can't deny that the .22's affordability is amazing. i still have a Ruger 10/22 but i was just saying that i swapped out my 597 for a Savage .17 and i am much more pleased. Yes it is a bolt action and it has never fail me.
ProdigySux 2 years ago
Sounds good and you'll always be safe with the bolt action!
grannman 2 years ago
i didn't like my 597 so i sold it and got a savage .17 HMR. i love the .17 so much. 2 in. groups at 100 yards is great for small caliber and the .17 does it with ease!
ProdigySux 2 years ago
I take it your Savage is a bolt action? I have two videos (not uploaded) of a semi automatic Magnum Research .17hmr misfiring in my hands. Very unpleasant and had to iron out a flinch after that. Hard to trust a semi auto in that calibre. Nothing beats the price of .22 ammo though and knockdown is good even though the range and ballistics aren't up to .17hmr level. The semi auto allows a lot of firepower on target in a short space of time also.

Nice shooting - downhill, with wind and small caliber. Very difficult at best.

whats the range on the rifle
bumsdrums 2 years ago
Effective range is generally 100m but most people would shoot game within 50 meters.

nice review. get a volquarsen hammer and lighten trigger to 3lbs.

I've got the same gun but with a mueller APV scope on it.
Try wolf match ammo.
Smallest group i've gotten so far is 1/4" at 50 yards(not meters :P)

yes I've heard good things about wolf match. Will have to get my hands on some sometime.

wow, that's one accurate gun there...
AirgunAddict256 2 years ago
Yeah the wind was picking up as you can hear. This rifle makes an excellent varmint rifle. Transferring energy is really relegated to the realm of the bullet chosen. A nice wide and deep hollow point will inflict heavy damage. At closer ranges bullets will bust completely through varmints - (possums - NZ pest for example) but the damage from high velocity hollow points or even round nosed bullets is sufficient to end things quick. I have found .22lr effective even when passing through the prey.

how are the gun laws in new Zealand?
trvmcintosh 2 years ago
Gun laws here aren't bad but could be better. However the police have just decided they would like to fallaciously class various thumbhole stocks as pistol grips which would require a special license. Since I own a Dragunov this is bad news. Currently an HK SL8 owner is rightfully looking to contest this in the courts (the underlying law hasn't changed - only police interpretation has changed). All in all our existing gun laws are pretty good. After all they permit me to own a Dragunov Tigr.
