  • Going to see Larry Carlton for the first time at a concert with my dad next Thursday :-)

  • dumble amps... omg love haha

  • irre gut

  • wonderful 100.000$ les paul

  • Robben strongly influenced by BB King

  • Made my day ! LC is plain awesome! SHREDMASTER !

  • I heard these 2 when they started playing together.

1970's, Dante's in LA. I stood no more than a handful of feet in front of them dead center. Pops on bass, Sample on keys, Stix on skins.

    I swooned.

For young'uns: LC was the first to perfect this style (Mesa Boogies (pre-amped amps) were freshly fresh). Check out the The Crusaders and LA Express (also his sound was a cornerstone of Post/Carpenter TV themes). He was THE nexus of jazz, rock and pop -- a minor musically historic figure.

  • This has to be the last thing I hear before I die. Larry Carlton's playing on this makes me forget so much that I don't want to remember.

  • 2 masters at work, just sit back and soak it up

  • Larry killed that lead!!

  • great playing but I love these guys through fender amps. The don't need that dumbell shit. Probably keeps things interesting for them having played fender 7 days a week during sessions in the 70's.

  • amazing!!!!!!!

  • You could buy a house with the value of all the amps on that stage...

  • @TRWilley

Then... now we all know why they have to tour the world... ;) Dumbles everywhere, but no place to go... ;-)

  • 2:23 "We are so getting laid tonight"

  • If I could play like that then I would die smiling.

  • Jazz Rock Machine.

  • I know it's the least important thing in this video, but the song's called "Cold Gold", and no Cold Cold". Just thought you should know in case you go searching for the song and don't find it because the title was wrong.

  • Double Dumble Dynamic Duo

  • 3:19

    NO PICKING. WHAAAAAAT

  • Oh man. Robben Ford did it again. Heis baaaad!

  • "Truth is beauty and beauty is truth and that is all 'ye know in this world and all ye' need to know." John Keats. And the truth is that this is beautiful, for all time. Many thanks, Robben Ford and Larry Carlton and 335 records.

  • This is what you call a very dynamic conversation piece. You cant go wrong with a Dumble in your rig.

  • This is called : MUSIC

  • Robben! after time listen to u i have to say again " i give up " :(

  • 19 people who presumably like guitar based music stumbled across this and clicked thumbs down... Put the guitar down is what i say to you , doh

  • 19 people don't understand note choice and feel

  • i just had a 8:45 minute multi-eargasmic experience.

  • Robben's rhythm guitar was supurb

  • eargasm

  • where does his pic goes at the time of 5.29? oh my goodness !!!

  • ONE WORD-AMAZING

  • If I had a dumble, don't think I'd stick a glass of wine on the top!

  • @mattacjones - not to worry, I'm sure that his 'road' dumble. The good ones stay in his studio ;0)

  • 18 queerios got lost on their way to BeiberLand... XD

  • Superb!!!! Absolutely superb!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • Is it me or does Larry only have to hit one note and it's like......well, your heart just melts. Then again, I probably more of a Robben fan really. I'd really like to invite these two guys down the pub for a drink and a gas bag.

  • I didn't know Toby from The Office played keyboards...

  • Good Stuff...your opinions, or mine, does not matter. One plays the blues for one's self. This is how you do it...old school...raw...real...from the heart.

I was always a Carlton fan for the jazz, but Ford packs it in pretty good.

(AJ, I now know why you like this guy)

    Peace,

    D

  • Arh, man...this is a thing of pure BLUEty!!! ;-§ Larry goes all in (WHAT a solo!)...but notice how Robben chooses to reply with some slooooow ´n sneaky notes. This is the way to answer a challenge. He plays his OWN game. This is two guys just enjoying themselves in the company of each other...going up or down..just where the other guy takes you. What connection, what skill, what feeling, what /#(%" joy! ;-) A classic. (Oh, and great backing, too! Never forget great backing! ;-) )

  • what fckn MORON shot THIS GUY???? theres jus no way to even begin to attempt to explain to the average person where this music is actually located.. if u dont play youll NEVER understand how fckin brilliant this is!!!!!

  • Gotta Check out Robben in the 1980's AMAZING SOLOS on the new You Tube video: ROBBEN FORD - VICTOR FELDMAN'S GENERATION BAND.

  • That's funny, i'm a tone freak but i prefer their sound when they 're playing a rented Twin Reverb with a good Zendrive in front of it. Much less compress and "fizzy" when overdriven. I am the only one?

  • Honestly, Larry Carlton's playing changed after he got shot. I mean take Kid charlemagne. then take this. the phrasing is still pretty great and he has insane tone but something just isn't there that used to be.... idk

  • Robben comps better than anyone in the universe - not to mention his superhuman improvisational ability.

  • I don't know about this, lots of musical masturbation going on here.

Two guys being flashy for the sake of it, and forgetting about taste and feel for their instruments IMO.

  • @glenclosed

" forgetting about taste and feel for their instruments" Not really, not even close -- they play JUST THAT WELL.....Word up. Any time you can play better post it. We're all ears.

  • @applejak2000 These guys aren't fit to change Steve Lukather's strings, now there's a guy with taste and feel.

As for me, if you know who Carlton, Forde or Lukather are, chances are you probably know who I am. Who know's, you might have a poster or two of me on your wall !!

  • @glenclosed Knock it off Ted!

  • Damn oh damn oh damn....

  • This music and a lot of german beer....thats what i want :-)

  • Oh yeah baby it smells like sex alright baby yeah...

  • Fabulous.....just two guys having a casual conversation on guitar (I'm fine, how are the wife and kids?).....

  • This should be called Challenge! I got the feeling larry was doing that old tap dance type challenge. Jesus! What a guy to follow! LOL

  • These guy's took me there and brought me back... What a trip!

  • is it just me or does the pianist look like a zombie at 0.53

  • DAMN DAMN DAMN

  • Update : 18 tased !

  • Just this past august i saw Buddy Guy and BB king in LA and I was blown away..especially at their age..and now I am equally melted by these 2 guys....truly does not get any better thanks for postin this!

  • There aren't many simpler styles of music than this .. Im sure that doesnt surprise anyone who plays .. but Ive not really seen it played much better. Very good.

  • Hear the great tone, then notice those Dumbles onstage... coincidence?

  • @DumbleAmplification

In a sense - hook a Dumble up to a talentless guitarist, and it will sound like crap.

THEN try it the other way....

A master with a masterpiece at the other end of the cable makes the cherry on the cake, though!

    LOL

  • @elmerexpress

An additonal way of saying it : take a shit bird amp and a cheapshit chinese Les Paul and give it to either Larry or Robben and how are things going to sound ?? Either will stomp ass! They can play with anything! There are legion who just don't get that...

  • btw:

one of you guys ever see a video with more dislikes than likes?

  • Wow..........

  • This is frickin GREAT!!! I have not seen either guitarest play too much with others! Thx 4 sharing.

  • I think Lady Gaga is what counts as exciting for Mr Orange.. Idiotic is an understatement for this guy..

  • Class. I would kill to be able to play like that! :-)

  • you are an idiot, you be an idiot, you have the qualities of an idiot. Next time either one of these guys is in town, buy a ticket

  • fantastic!

  • larry ripped it a new one!

  • doesn't get much more boring than this

  • @OrangeLight08 Well, if you ever come down off yer meth high, give it another listen... You didnh't listen to it all the way through did you!

  • @OrangeLight08 Your an idiot!

  • @OrangeLight08 youre quite the moron arent u?

  • @1:35 "u want that chord, don't u?"

  • Damn! Bad ass!!!!!

  • Ive seen the blondie girl too XDDD

  • guy at 0:56 reeeaaalllllyy feeling it :)

  • The thing I love about these two and this performance is the dynamics.. The song breathes like its alive. Take 6:02 - 6:15; all the instrumentalists including Robben gradually rise, and fall away into nothing again so smoothly.. Dynamics is something that gets downplayed in modern music I think, but it is a powerful thing. These guys have mastered light and shade (amongst many other things) and their performance is both amazing sonically and visually powerful. 2 of my favourite guitarists!

  • @lollipophugo

You are so right, Dynamics is the key in Blues.. make that one note count !.. This is just off the fricking scale...

  • @lollipophugo I am in fullness grokking. Blown away by this performance. Judging by the dates of the comments, I'm amazed I missed this gem. You might try the Hellecasters if you haven't already lollipophugo. Bit more clinical but I'm sure you'll appreciate the gifts and the generosity of 3 major players in one band.

  • @lollipophugo

Bravo. Couldn't of said that better myself. Saw both of them last tour in Oz. LC has been my favorite guitarist for decades. Lucky to meet him and Travis.

  • Cold, Cold is Great, Great!!

    thanks for posting this!

  • Immense!!!

  • Anyone know where I can get hold of the DVD?

  • Guitar heaven man!

  • The keyboard player could use a wardrobe consultant. I can't stand it when musicians dress like "schlepps'.....

  • Don't get me wrong, I have always considered these guys to be top notch musicians, but what impresses me the most about this video is how attentive the audience is.

  • Geezus!!!

Saw something on a forum recently: "Play like you have something to say, not like you have something to prove."

Between these two, I think they've just about said it all. They proved you can play your ass off and STILL be saying something.

  • 3:20 - that's the sweetest and nastiest I've ever heard a straight pentatonic sound.

The I see his right hand doing barely touching the strings. wth?? how??

Not to mention everything he plays after that point :-O

  • @rvcctj Easy...Learn everything you can about playing guitar, then forget it.

  • Carlton's son Travis holds his own on the bass too! Two great guitarists who know how to play and when not to play. Tight!

  • dam this is bad ass

  • epic

  • nice blues!

  • great.

  • Tone tone tone! & loads of tallent!

  • Killin' it - damn! Two of the best of our time, no freakin' doubt; way too many people don't know what they're missing listening to the crap being rammed down their throats by the big music companies. Such a shame - but thankfully artists like these guys keep it going on - and setting the bar WAY high. Thanks 335 and guys!!

  • @gitardoofus hell yeah checkout SouthernCross youtube address

  • Well after years of searching im so happy that i've found the best video on youtube. FACT!

  • @AndyGuitar01 FACT

  • now these cats can play some good blues!!!!

  • LOVE IT

  • Larry's solos are so unique and interesting... didnt rally dig robben's solo here

  • Ridiculous!!!!! SO good!!!!!

  • I recently got a Larry Carlton record for 50 cents and it is in mint condition. Maybe it's the album cover or something but I got a great deal on that one!

  • Who's that drummer ? He's insane!

  • @sampoirier

Thats the wonderful Toss Panos on drums and (in case you are wandering) Thats Larry's son Travis on Bass.

  • Robben Ford is so freakin good...

  • This is soo freakin' great! They both are having fun, feeling the groove and feeding off of each others inspiration! I give this ten stars for a great upload. Thank you, for this. Play on...Jerry

  • Nice !

  • this has got to be one of my all time fave. videos. bsolutely superb stuff

    neillian

  • I find myself watching this video at least once a week. what great music

  • This is only entertaining a bunch of old farts with one foot in the grave who are too narrow minded to appreciate anything other than what was cool when they were young. I guess Clapton was too busy influencing pop music and culture to get caught up in rehashing the same shit Django Reinhardt and Wes Montgomery had already done a million times better than these two fellows in the video clip.

    "Jazz is Shit"

    ----------------------------- Quote by John Lennon

  • @SuperAnalogue1

Reply to your comment, (quote lennon)

All music has it's place and music performs different functions. I't is hard to get that over to the masses.Listen man, Iv'e been in this game a long time, this game is a hard one as it is.The objectives in music are different for everyone and that should be respected no matter who you are. The quote from lennon, well, you just don't engage with it.

  • If this don't make the hair on yer arms stand on end, ya must be dead.

  • This style got old in the 60s..Is there anything here that wasnt done by ...(you fill in the blanks) Blues Saraceno is the only''bluesman'' to add anything to the genre since..Why cant I '''report this vid as inappropriate''?

  • There are so many masters of guitar.

NO way to compare them - just enjoy them , maybe learn and earn

some inspiration- to excel your own way- make your own path...

tx. for posting this... amazing musicians - all of them !

  • Hey they're all good in their own way. What sets guys like Carlton apart from the rest is his wide range of styles that he has mastered. He can walk into the studio and play with anyone including TV and film score session and he can READ music too and do straight ahead jazz. Clapton is great in his own way but cannot be compared to a Larry Carlton type of musician's musician.

  • 'them dubles! AWESOME tone.

  • @MrCptGonzo Dumbles?

  • @diannec100

    Guitar amps.

  • The absolute best and natural guitar god performance i have ever seen!!! This is soul, this is blues, this is jazz,,,,, THIS IS STONE COLD REAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY 2 TOP FAVOURITE AXEMEN! I;VE SEEN AND HEARD ALL THE BESTGUITARISTS IN MY TIME, OVER AND OVER AGAIN, AND HEY ALL POWER 2 EM ALL!!! BUT robben IS JUST COMMIN N GOIN TO AND FROM SAME PLACE IN HIS SOLOS THAT even if i tried 2 follow where the next riff was headin, well then he wouldn;t be the king!!! AGAIN..... THE KING!!

  • DAM. talk about ear fuck. Larry just raped my ear.

  • I agree that EC has made significant contributions to blues guitar and is a journeyman though in the 70s he rapidly transitioned to singer/songwriter. Not trying to be mean but his licks are pretty much frozen and reflect his playing 60s and 70s playing. But again EC was moving into the singer/front man direction so this is understandable. But Guys like Ford and Carlton kept evolving and it shows. Also consider Jeff Beck, a contemporary of EC, who keeps growing as a player.

  • Hey people, what's up with the Clapton hate? Last I checked he was a fairly substantial contributor to this style of playing. John Mayall's Bluesbreakers anyone? Hideaway? And if Clapton is some sort of slouch then what would we make of Hubert Sumlin and Elmore James? These guys are great, but they get to stand on the shoulders of giants. I hate to preach, but that +15 comment at the top of the page set me off.

  • 3:40 a ma gad!

  • Sublime playing, from two masters.

  • I've said it before and I'll say it again: Larry Carlton has never hit a bad note.

  • Guitar heaven thank youtube.

  • It never ceases to amuse me that rather than appreciate the contributions made by guitarists, so many use the opportunity to compare & criticise. Why??? What is accomplished by this? Apparently it is in our nature to descriminate and to criticise rather than celebrate.

  • OMG!

    Killer Communication on Stage!

    check out 1:40. and 2:27!!!

    What feeling and playing....

    Iam speakless...

  • the first time I listened to this I thoght Larry Carlton had forgetten the lyrics

  • What a performance for the ages,

  • much better guitarists then clapton, hendrix, john mayer and more...

    true talents no doubt.

  • The 11 dislike votes should be arrested !

  • @express49 ....then shot.

  • @55slice Sorry , take them with you then , no death penalty in my country ! otherwise ... did u mean , without trial ..... OMG !

  • @express49 ...it was meant tongue and cheek as a reply to your comment.....anyone that can't appreciate the quality of this music "needs to be shot"...just a quip nothing literal....and if they don't like this type of jazz they certainly won't be going with me..

  • @express49 carlton and ford should be arrested for being this good

  • Super Performance!!!! WOW!!!! What a treat. Thanks for sharing mimichou53

    Grandma mary

  • 2 enormes guitaristes ,que du plaisir ,une sensibilité ,un touché ,

  • Carlton is just on fire.

    Splendido !

  • very cool !...です.

  • uhuh

  • i wanna do this. somebody in KS got time?

  • @Knght1216: i am sure Calpton is still much better than you.

  • Bloody hell, sends shivers thro your entire body, the good type tho

  • they played this last time they came through boulder colorado 2008.. i hope they play it again when they come to boulder april 29th 2010.. they play as one when playing together...

  • Meravigliosamente BLUES!!

  • heya guys! Music is not politic or sport to argue, who´s better,stronger....just enjoy, feel,...and shut up! If ya don´t like,..U can always change the site. Hallelujah!

  • They look like they're having a good time which reminds me of an old old saying; "Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life".

  • @1954tele These men work for their own pleasure, and it's good for us :)

  • two of the best ever

  • I love Larry's finger plucking tone. What a show that must have been. 2 of my heros. I noticed Robben messes up 1:23.

  • That is a LOT of Dumbles in one room...I count 3 at least.

  • @weirdotis what is a Dumble? :D (I know an amp...but never heard of them...are they somekind of epic ones?)

  • @Fr3etd4nc3r It's a very rare amp. I think there were less than 100 made. Users include/included SRV, these 2 guys, Carlos Santana, Mark Knopfler, Eric Johnson, and others. They're based off a Fender Twin circuit I think.

  • @weirdotis thank you for the explanation, I guess this makes them rarely expensive too

  • I thought I didn't like the Blues until I saw Robben at Anthology in San Diego. I can't wait to see him in Austin tx in April. What a talent!

  • both playing Dumble amps, FML.

  • If hendrix and Johnson were alive they would be playing through 30,000 dollar gear and still wouldn't sound as good as Robben. NO WAY!! HE IS THE BADDEST!

  • i really never sat down and listen to blues. until a co-worker told me to check out Robben ford. damn he was right. this is good.

  • Mauricinho's blues

  • I don't understand why so many blues players use Strats only for blues when there are other guitars which have more natural sustain for bending and holding notes. This vid is a great example. Telecasters are excellent for playing blues. If you didn't beef up the signal in some kind of way with a Strat, it wouldn't be heard through the mix.

  • Impresionante...

  • These guys might simply be the two best blues players that ever freakin walked the planet. I can't get enough of it.

  • Well, I'd have to say I'm the Fuck Tard, the song is indeed Cold Gold. My apologies to Crazy....

  • What the fuck are you talkin about cold gold? That's not the song you fuck tard..........

  • Sorry Clapton, real Guitarist are on stage............

  • Around the time a lot of bluesmen were gravitating towards funk, Clapton's work with John Mayall revived the popularity of the classic sound and helped pave the way for blues to continue being popular clear through the SRV revival and up until today. Without Clapton these two might not have been on that stage, in that environment, with that reception.
