@LoneSniperFox i can understand sorta, because its kinda boring to kill people. But half life isnt about killing. Its about problem solving and being realistac and fun, and this game in 95% percent of peoples opinion, is both realistic and fun, whitch no games have done before
I honestly did not really like this game. I bought the Orange Box on Steam about a month ago to try out the "great" Half Life 2. wasn't impressed. It's not a bad game. But everything mentioned in the review wasn't true for me.
I find the first Halo more fun.
With Half Life 2 I felt lost in an alternate universe with no voice. Felt the same with Portal but actually liked it. and Portal 2. But again, with half life I didn't even bother with the other two episodes.

I didn't get the story. Gordon has to go to kleiner's lab then he has to walk to eli's lab, then go to resistance base, but you have to go through ravenholm, then go to vortigaunt base, then nova prospekt, then revolution, and finally tower. I liked the game but the story is just Gordon Freeman walks and shit happens. The episodes had better stories.

And how can you just say gordon goes around randomly shooting stuff?! he's killing combine and xens because they want to kill him! that a simple premise for you!
what?! no! i just ran out of room! the premise is that gordon was frozen in time by the gman for 10 years, and in the meantime an evil intergalactic race known as the combine came to earth in order to assimilate the human race into their empire and suck all of the resources out of the planet and exterminate the remaining population of non-compliant humans. Gordon obviously wants to fight back against this evilness, because if he doesn't, they will destroy the world. it is generic on the surface.
but when you actually play the game, you see how fascinating a manner they went about this common action game premise. instead of just downright killing all the humans and stealing all their resources, they go about controlling them in a 1984-style regime. they put a suppression field in order to stop their ability to reproduce and enforce strict curfews and residence quotas to keep them in line and prevent rebellion. the combine are far more subtle than other evil aliens, like halo's covenant.
You explain it good but the game itself does a bad job of it. You only know what happens next because a character tells u or a character in a tv screen does.
you just have to pay attention to the subtleties of the game. i didn't get the whole plot until after about the 3rd or 4th playthrough. i think its a far more fascinating and difficult manner of storytelling to ground the player in the main character's shoes throughout the whole game with no cinematics. cinematics are an easy way to reveal plot; not using them is far more challenging.
i know what he means. he says its hard to follow which is true if you havent played the first one. i should know. i just decided to look up what i didnt know and enjoy the story more than i already did. still the story is very nice and it is no where near half assed

I had some promplems play Half life 2 on Garry's Mod like I couldn't hit some switches and when the police told me to pick up a can I did but he still wouldent move
I dig the review, but I would disagree that the music gets less than a 5/5 score.
I found each segment of music to be perfectly timed and quite fitting for the scenario in which it plays. Valve is one of my favorite game developers because they really put what they have to good use... less is more kind of thing. The music fits into this idea and to me the lack of music constantly playing in the background makes you appreciate when it does play, it gets you amped up. (See next comment) ...

Graphics don't need so many points. I think they should get a spot because it shows attention to detail and stuff but they really aren't something huge. I do like how you judge them though. Even though this game doesn't have the prettiest looking people or enemies, you still appreciated the way Valve made things look with the technology they had.

I like it, if you don't then don't play it. There is always one way to do it that is easy you just have to look. It isn't that hard in my opinion. Getting the the sand field with ant lions was a brilliant puzzle.

Yes, but I've found playing Half Life 2 via Garrysmod dosen't work very well. Sometimes it loads the wrong map and you get all the weapons from the start, it just isn't as fun.
Yeah, but I'd wait for a bundle that includes either uncharted 2 or gran turismo 5. If you can't wait till autumn, when those 2 titles are going to be released, then you should go out and buy a killzone 2 bundle and start saving for games.
But if you have a kickass pc, like something with gtx275 or better, then you shouldn't leave your pc yet, the ps3 may become cheaper in a year or so, and games on the pc cost so much less.
that was because Valve didn't do the orange box for PS3, EA bought the rights to it and made a PS3 version. if valve had made it thing would have been fine but seeing that EA has a habbit of killing would be good games (Mercs 2) Valve shouldn't of gave it to EA but should have done it themselves.
Well, the thing is, if they had made it themselves, then we would have a working linux port of the source engine as well. You see, the ps3 can only do openGL graphics, as well as linux, but the original source engine was designed for dx9. Since there are linux server ports of source games, we only have to make the source engine run with gl. But since the port which uses opengl instead of dx9 belongs to EA, and the non-graphic engine of the source belongs to valve, there is no working linux port.
No they didnt. They said they havnt made any ps3 games simply because they have no good ps3 coders. They said they are trying to find some and once they do then they will develop for it.

I've downloaded half-life 2 today and started playing. I'm a couple hours in and I will admit I was pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail in the presentation. But I don't have fun playing it. The gameplay just seems so run-of-the-mill, I can't stand it.
That may be it, but I also tend to only review excellent games. I'm going to try to review some not-so-good games for a little while as well as the good ones.
One comes to mind...let me start working on that. Also I have Left 4 Dead, GTA: San Andreas, and maybe World in Conflict to work on.
Nice review! But I don't think anything should get a perfect score. There's no such thing as "perfect". As I make graphics for games I just start to notice the flaws in things. But I like how you explain why you think something is good.
Hmm.... I think the Reveiw was Great. Although a change i can think of, If you've ever seen the old show Judgment day on G4, they listed Pros and cons in a box, i think you should add something similar to that aswell, but other than that Its great. =)

i think the new review is great category but it feels wierd how only graphic n gameplay r ten. story and sound are as important. mayb everythin 10 will b more balance. dont know if u wanna add it to ur list but i usually put presentation. it focuses on directing like script, voice act, cenimatography n how obstacles r set up n the features the game offer. anyways u did good with ur speech its easy to follow.
i like how you mentioned both music and soundeffects for audio part of the game. most editors failed to do that. when i review, i ussually put voice over as a separate part for presentation or performance cuz it kinda belongs in directing range outside of story but since u have brief review its great u organized it.

Graphics don't need so many points. I think they should get a spot because it shows attention to detail and stuff but they really aren't something huge. I do like how you judge them though. Even though this game doesn't have the prettiest looking people or enemies, you still appreciated the way Valve made things look with the technology they had.

really so far its a good game but i think it needs a lower review but not by much because of simple things they could of fixed easily like the fact that at times you just cannot find where it is that you need to go and it just gets frustraiting

I like it, if you don't then don't play it. There is always one way to do it that is easy you just have to look. It isn't that hard in my opinion. Getting the the sand field with ant lions was a brilliant puzzle.

Yes, but I've found playing Half Life 2 via Garrysmod dosen't work very well. Sometimes it loads the wrong map and you get all the weapons from the start, it just isn't as fun.

Man, at least on the ps3 port, the controls for the buggy/car/airbot really sucked, you had to control the whole vehicle with just one analog stick.

Yeah, but I'd wait for a bundle that includes either uncharted 2 or gran turismo 5. If you can't wait till autumn, when those 2 titles are going to be released, then you should go out and buy a killzone 2 bundle and start saving for games.
But if you have a kickass pc, like something with gtx275 or better, then you shouldn't leave your pc yet, the ps3 may become cheaper in a year or so, and games on the pc cost so much less.

that was because Valve didn't do the orange box for PS3, EA bought the rights to it and made a PS3 version. if valve had made it thing would have been fine but seeing that EA has a habbit of killing would be good games (Mercs 2) Valve shouldn't of gave it to EA but should have done it themselves.

Well, the thing is, if they had made it themselves, then we would have a working linux port of the source engine as well. You see, the ps3 can only do openGL graphics, as well as linux, but the original source engine was designed for dx9. Since there are linux server ports of source games, we only have to make the source engine run with gl. But since the port which uses opengl instead of dx9 belongs to EA, and the non-graphic engine of the source belongs to valve, there is no working linux port.

I've downloaded half-life 2 today and started playing. I'm a couple hours in and I will admit I was pleasantly surprised by the attention to detail in the presentation. But I don't have fun playing it. The gameplay just seems so run-of-the-mill, I can't stand it.

That may be it, but I also tend to only review excellent games. I'm going to try to review some not-so-good games for a little while as well as the good ones.
One comes to mind...let me start working on that. Also I have Left 4 Dead, GTA: San Andreas, and maybe World in Conflict to work on.

Hmm.... I think the Reveiw was Great. Although a change i can think of, If you've ever seen the old show Judgment day on G4, they listed Pros and cons in a box, i think you should add something similar to that aswell, but other than that Its great. =)

i think the new review is great category but it feels wierd how only graphic n gameplay r ten. story and sound are as important. mayb everythin 10 will b more balance. dont know if u wanna add it to ur list but i usually put presentation. it focuses on directing like script, voice act, cenimatography n how obstacles r set up n the features the game offer. anyways u did good with ur speech its easy to follow.

i like how you mentioned both music and soundeffects for audio part of the game. most editors failed to do that. when i review, i ussually put voice over as a separate part for presentation or performance cuz it kinda belongs in directing range outside of story but since u have brief review its great u organized it.
