How do you think people learned about the world before colleges existed? First-hand experience. A degree is little more than a piece of paper assigned value by the institution it's granted by. There's a very real reason we have tons of college graduates that are, in reality, clueless because they lack experience. Make of that what you will.

They're also rising in cost and becoming worse investments, especially in technical fields such as computer science that progress faster than people can write textbooks for them.
