  • Del Toro is KING. In saying that I wish he'd direct all if not every future Stephen King novel

  • I'll admit I'm still kind of disappointed that Del Toro backed out of directing "The Hobbit." I was really curious to see what he would do with the film(s) since he's already made so many terrific and imaginative fantasy films.

But whenever I feel disappointed about it, I remind myself that PETER JACKSON took over for him. That's the best possible scenario for "The Hobbit"!

Still, Del Toro's probably the only other director I'd trust with material as beloved as Tolkien's.

  • i think our best buddy jackson can do the best job

  • I don't care if it's Guillermo or Jackson, as long as they make the movies f*cking epic!

  • Lol he left. PJ'll do a better job I reckon.

  • im extremely excited for the hobbit

the hobbit is hands down my favorite book of all time

  • Bloody hell, we knew about it that long ago?! Even before Hellboy 2? Time sure does fly.

  • Pan's Labyrinth was a great movie but when BDT gave the same treatment to Hellboy 2 he screwed it up royally... if he does the same to The Hobbit well shame on him

  • @55vdub hellboy 2 was awesome! i just watched it and thought it was a great movie that didn't take itself too seriously.

  • OMFG IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS.

    ALL

    MY

    LIFE.

    (exaggeration yes, point across yes)

  • Del Toro is out, Martin Freeman is rumored to be the choice for Bilbo, and supposedly they may start filming in January at least according to theoneringdotnet,

Of course all this may change at a moment's notice.

  • FUCKING YEEEESSSS!!!!!!

  • i am super excited to see how well they will do the battle of 5 armys,,,,they better not screw this up,,it already upsets me that they are making it into 2 parts (im sure so they can make more money off of the story)

  • I think this is a cruel joke. I've heard nothing but rumors, no solid facts or release dates.

  • this is gonna be a great cumfest

  • this is gonna be a cumfest

  • I would prefer if Jackson had more reins on this. Which, he probably will. lol I just love how he envisions and brings to life Middle Earth. Without Peter, The Hobbit would suck. I believe he's the only one who can truly do it justice. ^-^ So I'm just glad Jackson is on board as well. :D

  • HE QUIT the hobbit job now the movie is without a director I HOPE peter jackson will direct it

  • @dardangashi95 He's in negotiations to direct it now, so as of now it sounds as if Peter Jackson will direct it, which would make this movie so much better, nothing against Del Toro, but Peter did an amazing job on the trilogy, and I'm positive he would do the same with these films

  • Well. Del Toro quit the movie. So now we have to start from square one. They say there was never a start date for production to begin. This is going to be a very long wait. If they rush it, it will def. be a disaster.

  • @machokingwwf totally agree with yo on that. if MGM ever gets their act together then this should be a great film, but.......?????? MGM should just sell the rights to The Hobbit outright and then fold itself into oblivion especially after morons like ted turner ( may he burn in hell ) screwed up MGM totally

  • i am sooo happy that guillermo del toro will direct this movie!! I CAN'T WAIT!!

and i'm also happy that PJ still is in it, because he really made LODR a masterpiece...

  • damn him if he makes the movie look holywood plastic.

  • i prefer Peter to direct this film

  • @cefanine He's going to now, he's in negotiations with MGM to direct it so sounds like he will

  • Love Del Toro, but most of his work lack subtlety. Great at monsters, but with the facets of human emotion, he doesn't have the greatest palette.

  • i prefer peter jackson, hellboy, pan's labyrinth are a complete shit... humm well.. let's see whats gonna happen now..

  • I'm so glad that Del Toros doing. Pans Labyrinth was brilliant and so was the orphanage........Hellboy was a lil gay though. Way to tell Peter Jackson to keep his filthy fuckin hands off it. LOTR was the worst 61/2 hours of my life. I couldnt make it the whole nine

  • @bobjangle11 Umm... Peter Jackson's style won 17 oscars. Just because Peter Jackson isn't marked as 'director' doesn't mean he doesn't have a say so in anything, with PETER JACKSON being the PRODUCER (Those are key words) he's going to be on set, most likely helping Del Toros. By the way, good job insulting one of the best directors alive.

  • @TheJamesDun thanks? U shud watch more movies if u think he's one of the best directors alive. I bet u dress up as gandalf every year for halloween huh? faggot

  • @bobjangle11 Granted, District 9 wasn't one of my favorite movies. Although you are being immature about it, the whole Lord of the Rings trilogy was suppost to have the mature feel of Peter Jackson's films. If you're expecting any different from The Hobbit, you're wasting your time. Drown in reality.

  • jackson shouldve straight up directed it, the LOTR films were near flawless (just a little melodramatic at times)

  • Well you're shit out of luck because Del Toro loves melodrama.

  • The Hobbit stands a great chance on winning the oscars but i may assume to be doubted. Nevertheless, the Hobbit is the final and yet before the lord of the rings was made. UPDATE: Tobey Maguire as rumored to be Bilbo Baggins has been backfired, which means he'll still be the spidey on the 4th Installment of the Spider-man franchise. Final conclusions, the best composer who performed Lord of the rings; Howard Shore has confirmed to return and compose for the Hobbit which i believe in two parts.

  • Keating and Radcliffe auditioning? What a fookin' mistake.

  • cant wait to see the effects on Smuag! I wonder if Gollum will look the same as in LOTR

  • pj will be executive so u know they will be same cool efects.

  • I definitively agree

  • yeah i agree. The movies are like all looks not depth and story and awesomeness factor or DAAANG!!! factor :D

  • Idiot.

  • Vulgarian !!

  • @neoperseus Afraid I disagree with you, insofar as capturing the dark side of childhood and fairy tales Pan's Labyrinth is in a class of its own.

  • This kid is on LSD

  • 'Remade'.

  • Can't wait!

  • Even though I'm not a huge del Toro fan, I think he will be perfect for the hobbit because of its unrealistic talking wolves, eagles, dragon etc. which one director could just settle for CGI beavers (Narnia), but Guillermo will definately bring the Hobbit characters to life.

  • Each fantasy/horror film should be directed by Guillermo Del Toro, every fantasy should be directed by P.J.,and every war/drama film by Steven Spielberg.

    Three best directors ever.

I think The Hobbit 1 and 2 will be great, maybe even better that LOTR(if that is possible) because there are now both Guillermo and P.J. in crew.I can't wait to see it.

  • @trpamhrh3 don't ever compare peter jackson to Steven Spielberg. U shud also quit limiting the story telling ability of directors to genres. Steven Spielberg made many great movies not war related. But every movie Peter Jackson makes is a 3 hour pile of shit. Hey lets blow shit up and say fuck you to character development and writing. Top 3 worst is more like it

  • @bobjangle11 Stephen Spielberg is good, but not amazing. Jurassic Park is rather mediocre... The story is rather scetchy, and everything is unrealistic; because if it were real dinosours they ALL would have died.

You know nothing about Film or Filmschool. I have friends who went into film school, look up DoubleAAProductions if you want to see one. They will tell you that Peter Jackson is a great director as well. Go ahead, ask a REAL director who is good and who isn't, kid.

  • @TheJamesDun haha Jurassic Park was unrealistic? Ur knocking that while simultaneously defending a movie that stars a hobbit, a wizard and an elf? Don't get ur logic dude. Anywho find me one fucking movie Peter Jackson did that was as good as schindlers list or saving private ryan...............Please don't say king kong. I hope ur friends r smarter than u

  • @bobjangle11 Judging by the comments on your channel, it looks like nobody likes you. Judging by your attitude it looks like you are trying to make up for yourself since your dad never loved you. Do I hear you say, don't say King Kong? Why? Because King Kong DID? Retard.

  • @TheJamesDun U stalking me now faggot? Maybe Ur daddy loved u a lil too much. U prolly cudda burned me with that last comment, but ur not very good with words. Y don't u just go watch the return of the King for the 400th time, and beat off to elijah wood in his shire wear.

  • @bobjangle11 Salking you? When someone says that I'm stalking them when their commenting on me being a loser, I don't take them seriously. OBVIOUSLY I did burn you, because YOU just contradicted yourself. Earlier you said that you couldn't wait till the Hobbit, now you completely insulted The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. So engage yourself in ecoistic carnal knowledge you turkeyfuck (That's not a cussword, figure it out) Don't even bother replying.

  • ths is great, im specting this movie since they finished the three films of the lord of the rings. the book is fantastic, so i wish the movie is too.

  • I'm hoping that 2 films covering a short novel ,will be more faithful to the original than 3 films covering 3parts(6 books) of LOTR. Maybe Del Toro won't try to "improve" it as much as Jackson.

  • Yeah, i definately agree

  • Thank you. BTW Jimmy IS a legend !

  • Whether PJ tried to improve it or not, he did rake in 3 billion dollars in revenue and 17 oscars, with praise from fans all over the world.

Guillermo Del Toro is going to make it his own vision, just like PJ did, and knowing Del Toro, he will make it an almost seamless and perfect transition to Lord of the Rings.

  • I'm sure the backers are delighted. In isolation ,the films are fine ,fantasy productions. Most LOTR (books) fans that I spoke to ,were relieved that he didn't "cock it up" too much, but mildy irritated by unnecessary changes- necessary ones we could handle!

  • Yeah, he did change a LOT, but i think a lot of it fit the movie. I read the LOTR series `before the movies, so I consider them two different ways of telling a story, but I can't decide which one I liked better.

I believe Del Toro will do the same, he'll make it his own vision, but it might be for the best, because it's his own way of telling the story.

  • I don't consider them "two different ways of telling a story." Jackson's work is a film adaptation of THE story(Tolkien's creativity and genius). Some changes could be justified on grounds of editing a book to fit 3 hours of film. However, that is harder to justify when large chunks of extra ,made up material , was added .(Aragorn-Arwen love interest was intrusive for the most part) and WTF were Elves doing at Helms Deep, yet no Eomer?

  • The Elves coming to help at Helms deep was a marvelous add in, in fact making helms deep a lot better than the book experience to me. When the elves came, the whole theatre (including me) broke out in applause.

Arwen and Aragorn were a necessary to add in from the appendices. It gave the film base and substance and the audience loved it, making Aragorn a memorable character.

I think Peter Jackson made exceptional adjustments, but I did miss Tom Bombadil =(.

  • When the elves arrived ,I thought "oh no!" The Rohirrim were short changed by the film version of The Two Towers. Theoden was made weak and dithering, leaning on Aragorn. The book relationship between Aragorn and Eomer was developed at Helm's Deep.(where was Eomer?)

Jackson seems to have an obsession with elves .

The book was not about Aragorn,it was about the little people -starts and finishes at Bag End!

Romantic stories are two a penny in Hollywood this was supposed to be heroic fantasy.

  • It was Romantic and Heroic. Where do you get off saying tat aragorr wasn't a hero. The movie, if well analyzed, is very epic in every way possible. Teodan was not made to look weak, look at him at the end of the battle, when he says "Ride out with me." and they slay all in their way. As for Eomer and Aragorn, not much of a loss. I'd rather see a love interest between him and Arwen than a closer relationship with him and Eomer. The Elves arriving didn't make it any less amazing of a story. at all

  • my thoughts exactly

  • BAGGINS!!!!

  • is the hobbit will be released sometime??? i mean are they gonna film it? or it's just a rumor?

  • any word on word on the release?

  • sometime december 2011, then 2012 for the hobbit 2

  • @danzerstar53 i doubt it will come out december 2011. they start filming this summer and its going to take them 2.5 years to finish it. i say december 2012 for part one and dec 2013 for hobbit 2

  • @ZidaneDaMan10 But Jackson is directing it, right? I'm so confused with all these comments. First it's Toro, then it's Jackson. WHO is directing it as of this year? O_o -crosses fingers- please say Jackson.

  • @Tess1061

    Del Toro stepped down.

Peter is most likely going to do it :)

  • I thought this said benicio del toro at first. I was in a state of shock for a moment.

  • I'm not sure why some people think that its out of Del Toros style to do a Tolkein movie. Its not at all. Tolkein is much more like Guilmeros films than alot of other fantasy authors out there.

If Del Toro did an adaptation of The Wheel of Time, Eragon or The Shannra series then it would be out of his style. That stuff is more sterotypical fantasy.

  • you know they wanted him to do the chronicles of Narnia.

    which would have been AWESOME.

  • I did hear that. that would have been REALLY interesting. very cool.

They also wanted him to do that mess I Am Legend. I'm sure he could have made it better but it still would have had Will Smith.

Del toro should do The Elric saga films. Seeing how he handles Hellboy, that would be siiiiiick.

  • yeah they wouldn't even need to make a new costume.. just take the nuada makeup and remove the pointed ears

  • tottaly. and red albino eyes :)

  • I think we shouldn't panic. With a big budget any film can be good... except pearl Harbour of course. Peter Jacksons earlier work sucked. All we can do is hope that these too can get it right. I mean look at transformers. AN absolute AWESUM movie, and it was directed by the friggin worst director in history.

  • MICHAELBOOMBLASPLOSION BOOOMBAY

  • Phew thats alright then peter jackson is envolved :D smile back on my face

  • 'Pan's Labyrinth' took home oscars 2006 - and i have never heard anything about it here.

    Hellboy2 sucked ass big time

but i'm still looking forward for the hobbit movie

  • You guys should remember (if you saw the Appendices on the Extended LOTR Cuts) that there were several other location directors on the set for the Lord of the Rings. In addition, the major look of things wasn't really decided by Peter Jackson, but was engineered by Alan Lee, John Howe, and the members of the design team. Peter Jackson is an incredible director, give him a little faith in his decision of Guillermo Del Toro.

  • ahaha! Yes Del Toro will do just fine I know it! He's amazing, I couldn't be happier.

  • This guy will do just fine - as long as he reads the book.

The Goblins of the Misty Mountains are a bit diff than the Orcs of Mordor etc. - Giant Eagles that talk will be a real poser, w/o them appearing too cartoonish...Beorn who towers over Gandalf... I don't know how u are going to not put a chapter on the cutting room floor, i hope not , every chapter is enthralling

  • People on this post are very interesting.

on one side we have the people who hate Guillermo for Pans Lab and the other who love him for it but dont think hes good enough for The Hobbit!

PETER JACKSON IS RIGHT BESIDE HIM!! Relax people.. Jackson wont let him screw up the film thats part of one of the most epic trilogies available.

  • thanks that makes me feel better about this I mean I liked del toro's work he's got a great imagination his movie have a great old fashion rustic alot of other fantasy movie by other director's are so cheesy I'm glad hollywood chose two geniuses to make this movie

  • Guillermo del Toro,

I've seen some your work. I've listened to some of your interviews. I'm thinking you might like some of my musical notions. So, when you get some time in your mornings, especially when your writing is bogged down, take a listen to some of my songs at YouTube - BertGriffin88.

  • I'm sorry guys but he's just not good enough to make The Hobbit. His work in Hellboy 2 was way to actiony and there was very little story plot, Pan's Labyrinth was way to fantasy like and had a very muggy feeling to it that will not work with The Hobbit. Peter Jackson is a phenomenal director probably one of a kind and I don't think this director will bring the realistic fantasy type that Peter brought. Also I don't think Peter will have enough power to change it to a mix of his and others.

  • I'd have to disagree with you. Del Toro thrives on creating supernatural worlds and believe that with the production of Jackson, they will create a world that is unbelievable. I'm just wondering how they are going to stretch this story into two movies since the book is fairly short.

  • Absolutely agree.

  • Peter Jackson directed horror comedies before directing Lord of the Rings. I doubt more than 2 % of the people who loved what he did with LotR watched the films he did before it.

  • Jackson and Guillermo working together. D: This movie is going to be EPIC.

  • Pan's Labyrinth is the PERFECT example of why he's directing The Hobbit! Go Guillermo!

  • I'd say you have about five minutes before PL fans come tear you apart

  • Just remember that Peter Jackson was the one that invited Guillermo to direct the movie. Why did Peter Jackson invited Guillermo and not other director? Well its very easy, check Guillermo's previous works so you can have an idea of the imagination of this man.

  • I would really really like to know the cast to be in this one, but I guess very few if any have been determened yet ...

  • Jackson isn't just gonna be an executive producer. He's also gonna be one of the writers along with Del Toro (and Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, same writers from LotR) and Weta will still be designing the weapons, costumes, effects, etc. Howard Shore will be back as the composer too.

So pretty much everyone from LotR will be back, so the "vibe" should not be that different. It will just have a different director.

  • I was a little worried at first. But since Peter Jackson is at least executive producer that means that it will have a lot more of that LOTR feel. I can imagine him givin' him tips on what all to keep his mind on in the Tolkein universe.

  • es de verdad k esta pelicula va salir ??

  • Oh yes, bring it on, this film looks like the shit, Damn long wait though 2010

  • I really wouldn't like Del Toro to direct The Hobbit. Del Toro's movies have much gore, and one of the things I loved from Peter Jackson is that he didn't use gore in The Lord of the Rings. Do you fancy blood in The Hobbit, a tale written mainly for children??

  • Well, I think the 1977 movie was intended for children, and was sufficient for it's purpose. However, the youth of today's age *want* action films, and directors realize that's the only way to get sales. Now, I hope that heads won't roll and blood splatter the camera, by any means, but I think the Hobbit would be a better film if it had some action, rather than a cloud of dust sealing off battles from view. I personally agree with you that Jackson would be a better director, however.

  • I'm totally for Del Toro. Why you ask me, I tell you, Del Toro's films aren't just about action and gore. Look at Pan's Labyrinth, a mystic and dark movie. Sure there is some blood, but that's only the backgroundstory (which actually resembles the actual mainline). However I absolutely adore his Costumes (Angel of Death, Childeater, Pan, etc.) This kind of costume would totally fit into the hobbit. And how would you do the final battle in the hobbits without gore. Oo

  • If you're going to refer to Del Toro's previous films to assume what he's gonna do with "The Hobbit", you may want to ask yourself the same with Peter Jackson. Before PJ made the LotR films, he was infamous for making a lot of morbid, disgusting, and gory movies, too. Didn't stop him from making the masterpieces that are the LotR films now.

Really, give people more credit. These directors are working for passion. They have real talent, and they shouldn't be limited to their previous films.

  • Great Book amd hopefully great film LOTR trilogy was fantastic. .......Peter Jackson is a good director and im glad he will be producer of the Hobbit.

Jackson and LOTR put Hollywood to shame! Great Stuff.

  • might be good

  • CAN'T WAIT!!

  • Ive got very high hopes for the oncoming Hobbit movie. Being a HUGE fan of Lord of the Rings and what Peter Jackson accomplished, I was obviously a little nervous finding out he wouldnt be directing The Hobbit.

Discovering it will/may be Guillermo Del Toro however, has put me at great ease!

  • just goes to show that the best directors DO NOT COME FROM AMERICA!!!!!!

  • just goes to show that the best directors DO NOT COME FROM AMERICA!!!!!! <<<== Del toro was born in GUADALAJARA, MEXICO.. Mexico lies in the AMERICAN CONTINENT.. A continent that was named after the Italian Amerigo Vespucci

whom realized that COLUMBUS had actually discovered a NEW CONTINENT.. Amerigo= America= America runs from Tierra del fuego Argentina all the way up to the allutian islands

    in ALASKA.. :O)

  • he would have to say "not all best directors are from the US"

  • GDT is from the American continent. Mexico.

    Try again, goober.

  • @ilovekenthovind1 i'd have to agree there!

  • Pan's Labyrinth is one of the best movies of the decades. The Hobbit will be in good hands.

  • Agreed! =D

  • Hellboy 2 was as profound and philosophically complex as GDT's other artsy movies (which most morons obviously haven't seen, or understood). If you completely missed that part, then Hobbit is probably not for you no matter who directs it.

  • he's an amazing film maker. you'll be surprised.

  • dude, youre a douchebag. i would like to see you even attempt to create something worth shitting on.

  • can you direct it then you fucking nerd,dork,geek,..

  • 2010 & 2011

  • I am super anxious to see how Guillermo's vision of The Hobbit will turn out!!!

  • i'm nervous as well, cos he is gonna use his stupid puppets like in hellboy!

  • It's gonna be weird because the elves in rivendell in LOTR movies are way more serious then the ones in the hobbit. I think Vigo should come back as Bard

  • People!! English Plz!!!! Anywho... I'm excited to see this movie... I can't wait till it comes out. I hope I'm back in Germany to see it... if not, I'll download it. :D

  • I can't wait for the Hobbit movie and it's sequel. I hope the Hobbit stays true to the book, i can't wait to see the Battle of the Five Armies, the wood elves in Mirkwood, Beorn, and i hope that the sequel will show the White Council's attack on the Necromancer(sauron) in dol guldor.

  • i was gonna comment, but you said everything i want also! especially the dol guldur part, that would be awesome cuz i love wizards and sorcery

  • He's gonna direct "The Hobbit" AND it's sequel? Thats frickin' awesome, man!

I just know it's gonna be good.

It would be cool if he could pay a little homage to the old cartoon movie version of the hobbit - with that song "the greatest adventure".

  • AWESOME!! AWESOME!!

  • Going to be SWEET!

Check out my fantasy series SPELLFURY and tell me what u think!

  • CANNOT LITERALLY WAIT

  • he hasn´t even made the fuckin movie yet!

  • I apologize for my ignorance... but what is the sequel to 'The Hobbit'? I thought the 'Lord of the Rings' was the follow-up? Surely, del Toro isn't re-doing 'Lotr'...

  • lol np not ur fault..

since new line cinima is ran by jews, there making the hobbit movie a 2 parter..instead of being 1 film there making it a 2 parter..ya see?

    thats gay huh?

  • there are about 30-50 years between the end of the Hobbit and the beginning of the Fellowship of the Ring

  • 60 years. But I'm Not sure there's enough there to make a film about.

  • The sequel covers the 60 years or so between the events of the Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings e.g Aragorn's travels, Gandalf's search for the One Ring and so on.

  • everybody i know Guillermo Del Toro is a good director but he doesnt know how lord of the rings should be shown.

  • guillermo del toro pwns the shit out of peter jackson >.>

  • Guillermo Del Toro creates a lot of good creature, you may say he's a vionary but something is lacking with him. hope he would do justice to the novel and the 1st Ring's movies but no doubt we would see a lot of interesting creatures in here

  • i wish PJ was directing it

  • We all wish...

  • not me...

  • OMG! I had no idea LOTR won 17 oscars! they are the best! my favorite film of them all! I cannot wait for the hobbit. but when will we see it? first I heard it was going to be in 2009, than I heard something about 2010 and lately I was told that 2011 it's the corect year.

  • Hellboy destroying the ring, I would watch that.

  • He will do an amazing job because if he could do something amazing with 80 millions in Hellboy .. imagine how incredible The Hobbit is gonna be .. Guillermo Rules

  • Man this guy better do an AWESOME job on the hobbit, cos if its not up to quality standard like the LOTR Trilogy then us KIWI's are gonna be TO'ED!!

  • He's a good visionary type of guy, who better to do this movie? But he had better do it good, and I mean DAMN good to even associate with the LOTR movies.
