Like I said on another clip......I'm fed up of ill-informed or just simply mentally challenged people who think we live on a FLOOD PLAIN!! @londongamer..........you obviously didn't pay attention much at school!
Every building from the river up to the opposite side of the main street would need to have some sort of erectable water barrier to protect its ground floor. As I've never seen anything like this, I would love to know how they will make Cockermouth flood resistant in the future. I suppose dredging and widening the River Cocker and replacing all the bridges with open span ones would be an idea? You only have to see the flood defence in the States, massive ugly concrete ditches, but they work!
Cockermouth does have flood defences, built in 1999... NO flood defences could have held back what hit the town. There is no stopping a flood of that magnitude! :(
skankinmike...you're right but not one part of Cockermouth escaped the storms wrath.
To think, some of the old & sturdy stone bridges in Cumbria were built a couple of hundred years ago, they've stood the test of many a storm, but down they came with this one. 1800 bridges have been closed for safety, cutting numerous towns & villages off, until they're checked.
Now there's 200 new waterfalls in Cumbria!
I'm proud to say I was born in Cumbria but glad I dont live over there any more.
That's the problem, the bridges have stood the test of time, but the floods nearly exactly fit the "1 in 1000 year" flood model, and the flood defences are only to stop a "1 in 100". There is no stopping somthing like that!!!!
I AGREE cosimeasy...and cumbrians are offered a measly 1.5 million, thats disgraceful. Maybe, as the word gets out, they will be more offered aid from other countries..however, the world is in a recession.... Geesh, I won't sleep well tonight...
These people need help fast - Browns £1000,000 wont do much good but then he`d sooner send £1.5 million to poorer countries for new road signes to be put up - so much for LOOK AFTER YOUR OWN.
I agree malcjow. I've just had a long phone talk with my life long friend over there. (I live in Canada now.) I am glad she let me know she is fine & which areas were worst hit, BUT MORE bad weather is on its way. She was in Cockermouth watching the rescues & HIGHLY praised the rescue operatives, said they deserve a medal, as they lifted people out through their roofs! One man waded in up to his neck! She said she can "hear" water gushing under Moor Row village, that & many others are undermined
It amazes me that people like londongamer open their gobs without knowing any facts. Cockermouth sits on the banks of the River Cocker and the River Derwent feeds into this. Its a valley, not a flood plain.
londongamer...... it isnt a known flood plain hence the fact that it was called freak flood..... people had never ever expected the disaster that did happen to happen over the area that it did
Cockermouth doesn't have flood defences, they were blocked for environmental reasons. These are the worst floods for 100 years. What do you do - only ever build on the worst case scenario?
Maybe we should remove the Thames Barrier and let London take its chances eh? Or perhaps you live one one of London's hills so you feel safe and sod everyone else? Shame complacency has got the better of you londongamer.

If people insist on living in areas that are known flood-plains, they should expect things like this. No point complaining to the authorities & environment groups; it's not their fault it gets flooded; besides, you're not supposed to interfere with the natural flow of rivers by building flood defences - flood plains flood for a reason; and,. it's WHY they're called flood plains. Some people just refuse to see common sense; even when it's brought home to them, (literally), in the form of floods.
