they are only meant to be put with certian other fish.

thats y most pet stores say that cichlids can be put with other fish that are just as agressive.

i just purchased a needlfish two nights ago, and he still has not eaten. I have him in a tank with 2 african chiclids, 1 john dempsey, 1 parrot cichlid, 1 oscar, a violet dragon goby, and a pleco. How long did it take yoursa to start eating after you got him. It would really be unfortunate if it died, its suck a sweet fish. Help if you can

my roommate had one that didnt eat for 3 days...the third day was the end of him. and my brother had one that didnt eat for 4 before it died...both were in established tanks...both my brother and roommate returned them for new ones, and the next set lived...I just got one today and I don't think he has eaten yet, but it's only been a few hours. what was the outcome of yours?

is it because of it's size cuz it's only 2 and a half inches long.

ya.

its still a bit to small.

idk the exact size shud be suitable for it to actually consume smaller feeder fish.

but my cichlid (before it passed away) was about 5 inches, and it loved to eat the tiny ghost shrimp. (the tiny shrimp that are sold at wal-mart or some local fish shop. they are about $00.28 each)

oh, if this helps any.

i read that due to the fact that in the wild that cichlids eat heavy amounts of food (due to the fact that the food in the wild has low nutritional value and has to keep up with the cichlids motabolism) and will most likely always seem hungry.

so basicly, im saying that don't feed ur cichlid to much, becuz since they gorge themslves in the wild with poor food, u don't have to keep feeding them since the food that u provide has a higher nutritional value.

he was eating pretty small guppies.

thanks for that hint about gorging himself cuz i fed him 3 fish and he just kept on wanting more.

also how many did u feed your cichlid?

not at the moment.

i have a Blood parrot tough.

hes actually quiet aggressive bcuz he killed the other 2.

well we usually fed him about 2-4 shrimp.

so i think 3 guppies is good.

if you like to watch your fish slotter feeders like this video shows you should get a clown knife or arowana..i have them they go crazy!lol get a bigger tank too i have a 125g and getting a 200g soon..btw once they all grow up they are gonna fight like crazy and that "green terror cichlid"at 2:10 will be a pain in the ass when hes bigger if you didnt already know what your getting into lol

I have got a 28 gallon fish tank, would that be big enough for when 1 needlenose gar is full grown, 3 bala sharks full grown, and 1 pictus catfish full grown?
