Sorry verminosity that guitar IS definitely out of tune which has nothing to do with the extended and altered chords he's playing. Out of tune is simply out of tune it doesn't matter how high brow the style is. Your ears aren't as good as you think they are!
I feel that despite the harmonic sophistication of this rendition it doesn't convey the essence of the song's 'soul' which is based of a horizontal flow and melodic impulsion which does is not served by over intellectualizing it.
-Loved it all!....super great chord progressions!...interestingly, In the 1950's I knew a
Harry Volpe who had a guitar studio on 48th street in New York City. I was about 18 years old at the time. He knew I was going to Sicily and if I could go see his mother. Unfortunately, she
lived much too far away from where I was staying. He also was a super great guitarist of his time.
Harry taught my teacher, Sal Salvador and set him up in town with studio and TV show gigs. I never met Harry though. He was the "studio guy" of his day.
I also think the tuning is off, but there may be a bit of flange that makes it even worse. The echo really kills it for me though. I kinda see what he was going for, but the echo should have been a much lower level and the echo timing did not match his timing.
No dear. His guitar is badly out of tune...listen closely G major at 0:29 for instance, even though he is out of tune throughout the entire song.Nothing to do with jazz chords.See?
Love the way Lou plays this - nicely filmed too so I can see what he's doing. A well shot piece can teach you more in a day than you can learn in a year from the plethora of well meaning but often pretty useless books on technique. Not crazy about the cracking sound he uses to punctuate the number though - for me, the subtle, understated phrases are the ones that send shivers down my spine. Many thanks for sharing this excellent vid.
No dear, his guitar is perfectly in tune. He's playing augmented and diminished chords, with added 7ths, ninths, etc. They probably sound 'out of tune' to your lame ears. Jazz players play these chords because people that actually like music think these chords sound good. See?

@verminosity being rude and telling people they had lame ears and don't "actually" like music leads to nothing. It has nothing to do with your point, please stop being bitter.
@verminosity the D string is definitely sharp.... you can hear the tension in the M7 chord early on because the third is clashing with the root and fifth. The fact that he's playing so many jazzy extensions and not plucking each string of the chord very often is just hiding it well. And even if it was in tune I'd still have no respect for you because you sound like a pretentious ass.
@GigglingGirI Forget about these audacious punks, ok? Regardless of how the music sounds to you or them, you shouldn't be spoken to in that manner. As for this song, I listen to a wide array of music, especially in the field of guitar, and this particular tune was not an enjoyable listening experience. Your comment on tuning his guitar was close enough to the point.
Wow! Someone requested this at a jazz club gig I did and I laughed and thought it ridiculous but you've shown it can be done - and very well! Great stuff!
Can't stand this song. Surley there's better songs to do.

What strings have you got on here - would guess 12s? - though the bottom E sounds richer.
