Arcade Fire- The Suburbs went to no.1 without a pop radio hit or a major label push - they sold out 2 shows at Madison Square garden right before the album came out and it sold almost 160,000 the first week - keep in mind they are an indie band with no pop radio exposure - they also went to no.1 in several other countries.
I remember seeing this. I knew they had to win the nomination as soon as they came out I never thought they could win after the disaster from the "album of the year" last year, I imagine other people's faces when they heard The Suburbs, Arcade Fire. Like the Arctic Monkeys would say "SUCK IT AND SEE".

I think the nominees of this year were a joke, excepting Arcade Fire, there were plenty of albums that got better critics than this ones. the only one that was near was The Fame Monster; albums like Monáe's an Cee Lo's were one of the best this year.
Lady Gaga and Eminem have won more Grammys than Arcade Fire and the nominations outside of The Suburbs were very weak so even though the Grammys gave their top prize to the most deserving album it is still hard to respect this award.

What's even more of a joke is that the rap and pop awards are on the main stage while the real discaplined music like jazz, blues, classical, bluegrass, etc are early in the day with a much smaller audience and rarely televised. I think the nominees of this year were a joke, excepting Arcade Fire, there were plenty of albums that got better critics than this ones. the only one that was near was The Fame Monster; albums like Monáe's an Cee Lo's were one of the best this year.

Lady Gaga and Eminem have won more Grammys than Arcade Fire and the nominations outside of The Suburbs were very weak so even though the Grammys gave their top prize to the most deserving album it is still hard to respect this award.

What's even more of a joke is that the rap and pop awards are on the main stage while the real discaplined music like jazz, blues, classical, bluegrass, etc are early in the day with a much smaller audience and rarely televised. The Grammys have lost a lot of respect, but at least year they made the right choices in the winners; namely Arcade Fire and Esperanza Spaulding! I'm a metal fan as well, and no one noticed Iron Maiden's Grammy for best metal performance!

It's not how popular all the songs were together or if they were the best in their genre. In actuality it's about how well the songs flowed together, their placement in the album, and the overall themes of the album being within all the songs. So if you'd bothered to listen to their album before you would've realized it embodied all that perfectly.

I'm not saying arcade fire isn't a good band, but the grammys fuck over rap all the time. In 2001 the MMLP had the best reviews yet steely dan won with a mediocre reviewed album because it was 'their time.' Now it was supposed to be eminem's 'time' and his mediocre reviewed album lost to a best reviewed album. The grammys contradicts itself, arcade's fire first album was better yet they didn't get recognition from them. And arcade fire didn't even win in their category yet they won this award.
