hi nice work thanks ! I am currently learning to play jazz/ blues as an intermediate, and i love this tune.
I have a beat up classical guitar and will someday buy a semi acoustic. I like the sound of your guitar ..or is it your playing! what type of guitar is it so i can start saving!
on a practical note it would be easier to follow your chord fingering if the lighting was a bit less atmospheric..! i.e. like a jazz club!l best wishes django R aka john
@7thGoldhand It's just a 2, 5, 1, 4 progression in G major, so its Am, D, Gmaj, and Cmaj, then following the circle of fourths, you have a 2, 5 1 progression in the relitive E minor, so its F#m b5, B, Em, then Em again
@7thGoldhand It's just a 2, 5, 1, 4 progression in G major, so its Am, D, Gmaj, and Cmaj, then following the circle of fourths, you have a 2, 5 1 progression in the relitive E minor, so its F#m b5, B, Em, then Em again
@rubenpalma22 Probably the most correct reading of those notes would be Cmaj7#11 (probably just an oversight - I'm sure this guy knows his chords...) Gmaj7/C gives you the right notes, but it's functioning as a C chord so that's what you'd call it.
Anyone who says this has too much talking is obviously not interested in theory. If you're not interested in theory you should go learn a different genre. I wish more youtube guitar instructors would analyze the theory behind what they teach. I love it!
Great lesson! this was very straightforward. Personally, I don' think you're talking to much at all. you knowledge of music theory is deep and helpful. keep playing!
This lesson is very good. I have BA in music and all the theory is correct. Thank you for taking the time to put this together. Keep up the good work!
This is what i call real Music and this is a REAL MUSICIAN. im 26 but i can still appreciate good old classic music. Kids these days need to appreciate this stuff not the crappy lil wanye and lady gaga crap.
@slickcross im 14 and greatly appreciate this music! lady gaga is CRAP!!! :) i play electric guitar and it is because of playing guitar that i learned to appreciate this type of music!!!
I have been playing folk acoustic and electric rock my whole life. I just picked up a jazz box (archtop). You have opened up an entirely new world for me. It is difficult but I am determined to learn. I love Joe Pass but never dared to even try anything that he recorded. I love his solo album.
Im having bad time learning this, can someone please let me know if there are tabs or at least in what tune this is it ? cuz i got E standard i dont get all the sounds he does :/
@kheczko it IS in standard tuning, where has there ever been prepared tuning for Jazz? It is very simple, play that note he calls C, and it is an E which is on a standard tuning of a B string. Don't try to argue with someone that has many years of experience in theory.
Well in my opinion everyone tunes his guitar as he/she likes.
Now I really don't know what are You talking about. First you say that 5th fret 5th string(B) is C not E. Now You say the opposite which is exactly what the guy have sad(btw I didn't found any moment with C note) . And a little advice if I may. Having your nose over your forehead isn't gonna do you any good.
@kheczko Well if you knew anything about chords or theory or even had one drop of common sense, you would know the chords he is playing is played in standard tuning, not a different tuning.
@DiatonicSoul I do know what is he talking about and I don't have any problem with it. You're getting off the subject, that is what i don't understand
Great work thanks for taking the time! I'm not a music theory buff and it's alot more satisfying knowing what's going on instead of just playing completely by ear. And a lot easier to remember, keep forgetting songs I learn because just see my hand placements as random xD.
please make a tab of the song, it would be easier for me to learn it that way; i'm sure there are others out there like me as well. good vid, prefer tab.
WOW! You are actually teaching me to play this! I can do it! More, please, please! I never thought I could play JP's stuff, because it is too hard for me to analyse, but with your help I am playing my dream guitar style.
Very fine! That's a beautiful-looking guitar; what make/model is it? I have always admired Joe Pass' clean, friendly, melodic playing. When did you get bitten by the jazz bug?
These lessons by Izapped are some of the best on youtube for guitar. I hate tablature and this is guy is the perfect teacher by telling you exactly what to play. Most guitar lessons they play something quick and really dont explain what they are playing and just expect you to recognize the chords. I learned some new chords and progressions today from watching lesson 2 of this series, the diminished chords.. Please post more detailed lessons like this for other jazz songs. Misty or something?
a friend of mine transcribed one of Joe's rubato solo versions of 'Django' and it had time signature changes every other bar, extremely tedious notation.
What about the right hand. Sometimes I find myself using only one finger playing the melody and other times all three. Should I force myself to use one finger per string? Is there a correct way?
However, I've a question. In your video you use a c#-min 7b5. The highest tone e resolves into a f-tone - that's why - I guess - you talk about a chromatic progression. But in what harmonic context do I have to put that chord? Is it a kind of substitution? It ist not part of the key of G. Is it an alterated-chord? It really sounds nice but I do not understand....
This is genius! I hope you get a million views for this you really deserve it, I've been looking for something like this for ages - its so great you go through it carefully. I also really like your analysis it gives me a new appreciation for Pass's incredible talent and allows for those of us who don't have your knowledge and ability to transcribe to benefit from being able to play such a seminal piece of music. I'd give it 20 stars if I could...
@lzapped Hi. This kind of music is a bit above my level of ability on the guitar, but I can't resist trying to play it because it sounds so good and you make it look so easy. Thankyou and I will be looking at the whole series.
@lzapped also I like how you use the note name of a string then the fret you are depressing, instead of 3rd string 4 fret, second finger...confusing. Your lessons are great
Depends on what sort of Bass line you like and are playing. (Bass line is the most important part of a Chord-Melody' Solo. Believe me.) You can explore 1000's of possibilities around the bass line you choose, for the chords you want to play. There are always substitutions, and these DO rely on the bass-line.

@dpkingbluesguitar definitely doesn't function as a D chord. It is a Cmaj#11, but I'd say that's a pretty small oversight.
