  • I love this song. I used to sing while playing my guitar at our local open mic. God Bless! Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas. ~Sharon

  • hmmm... Yes, let's have a big, shitty religious debate in the comment board.

I'm sure that's what people come to Youtube for, and it's not pissing anyone off.

Thats sarcasm. Everyone, shut the fuck up about your religion, or lack thereof.

I can assure you that nobody cares.

  • gg kk

  • Certainly not her best performance. I don't like that baby voice she puts on... She doesn't do that on other performances.

  • At a February, 2008 concert in Las Vegas, Jewel explained that when she was 18, she was living in a van and did some shoplifting. She was going to take a dress when she looked at her hands and realized that she controlled them. Said Jewel, "I realized I was cheating myself. No matter how you work with your hands your own dignity is up to you."

This is why Jewel Wrote the song

  • this song is awesome! love it

  • if i could tell d world just 1 thing it would b we all ok and not 2 worry cause worry is wasteful and useless it times like these i won,t b made useless or b idle with dispair i will gather myself around my faith light does the darkness most fears

  • Just simply try to sing along with it... There is so much emotion in these lyrics... hope, despair, sadness, happiness. It is such an amazing collection of words mixed together to be so prophetic and relevent to so many hard times in our lives. For anyone who would believe angles are brought before us to bring us to show us our true path need look no further.

  • great talent and she always gives her heart to her songs. her vocal range and techniques are incredible

  • RIP Rachel Scott

  • thumbs up for DDP on drums lol

  • This song came out In 1998 before The Columbine massacre happened.

  • 1:54 lmao

  • Thank you Jewel for this song.....it helped me get through a lot of hard times in my childhood. We are never broken....cuz we are in God's hands. Thank you God for having me in your hands through those hard times. <3

  • Love the outro only should have been longer.

  • frog1000 - this is jewels best song.

I agree and her most underrated song. Love the outro only should have been longer.

119,000 views for a song this good, that's just not right.

  • LOve this song... since I was in grade scool.:D

  • She was beautiful back then. It is too bad she made her appearance into an anorexic barbie doll.

  • I'm sorry but I don't understand what libralism has to do with the song... I mean conservative, libral whatever Its a great song and Jewel is an inspiration.

  • Yes you are correct in your assessment of the current political climate. However, I don't just blame liberals. There seems to be a political climate in both parties , bot conservative of if we can't control it ban it out right

  • Beautiful, absolutely beautiful. Why the hell is Lady Gaga more popular than Jewel?

  • @unchiman666 unchiman666 Lady Gaga is more popular because she uses totally content-free sentences of less than five words and has about as much relevance as the empty beer cans her fans strew around the arenas where they go to watch her. Jewel on the other hand actually can read and write and has the poet's gift of sharing her insights with us. She will live forever,.....in the caring she inspires in all those who take the time to listen,......

  • The answer to @unchiman666's question is that Lady Gaga has someone with the inside (hired or otherwise) scoop on how to use the internet to create a Rabid Following / "Tribe" / club etc. The internet has nearly taken over the advertising industry, and that goes at least double for music.

I agree with your implication that Jewel is FAR superior to Lady Gaga. Jewel seems real, genuine and cool! Yup, that's Jewel! ;)

    Gary.

  • I think we do need faith in the face of chaos and disaster. Not your faith necessarily, but our own. Even if it's the flying spaghetti monster, as long as you are praying for good judgment, rebuilding after disaster, trying to bring justice, then you need faith. It is sad that the only commandment that really mattered, "love one another," is so hard to actually practice. This song inspires me and helps me focus on what is important. Whatever God is, we are his hands.

  • I'm an atheist, but an artist's religious views don't hinder my appreciation for their wonderful talent (especially in performing arts). If Jewel wants to incorporate her beliefs in her music then that's fine. In the lyrics, she's not asking or trying to convince you to follow her religion, nor is she bashing any other religion. The overall message is that 'kindness matters', and being a kind person involves having tolerance (at the least) for people who are not like you.

  • Thank you for the video!!

  • i was 5 when i heard for the first time this song xD

  • She is one of my all time favorite female singers.

  • Not only is she gorgeous, she certainly is talented, Which seems very hard to come by these days.xxxx

  • This song will come in handy in the next couple years...

  • She seems up herself to me

  • i recon this song will be very effective put at the end of a sad movie or something

  • this is her only song that doesn't make me cringe...sadly...she's good just a little whiny...

  • omg they came to my school and i can't stop crying i can't stop cryng right now

  • I love this song, i love Jewel..where has she been? i would like to hear somehthing new from her.

  • Shes made a country album and a baby lullaby album :)

  • of course she is preaching. she is telling us that "we are god's hand, gods eyes" and that only kindness matters. Kind of a dorothea day Catholic Worker thing. I am an athiest jew but i believe that too. who can argue with that? btw , why does the original video get pulled but these t.v. things stay??? really wondering.

  • I'm confused. What's an Athiest Jew? I thought Jews believe in God.

  • mercy: there's lot of atheists who still come themselves Jews.

  • Got that right! It's because they don't want the original up incase someone might try and steal it for other purproses, I presume. :]

  • Oh gosh..This song is BEAUTIFUL!! It was playing after this guy talked about how his sister was the first to be killed in the Columbine shooting. I think I cried.

  • OMG that came to my school and thats when i cried

  • dmay525, keep dreaming loser!

  • This is a little to wussy for me. I like the song don't get me wrong, but come on you have to admit her older stuff was much better. It could be soft and melodious but still be brutal and sharp.

  • what do u mean her "older stuff". it was on her second album. i dont care for this song as much as alot of her others but it is widely considered as one of her best.

  • this is jewels best song. talented and soulful. whats with all these religious comments. art is art. and lets face it in THE END only kindness matters and one should be able to see the truth of that with or without religion.

  • @jfrog1000 for some reason, liberals dont like christians

  • @kevlarunderwear22 Yeah Liberals don't like Christianity. I always find that ironic. Since Christianity embody the lifting up of people and that is what liberals claim to be about. Maybe it is liberal selfishness. They don't want to share credit with God or maybe they are arrogant in their belief they don't need good

  • @rdhharper liberals certainly are about taking away your freedom of choice if they dont agree with your viewpoint, which i find arrogant. also they tend to be very pro-muslim, which may explain their anti-christianity. thay want a world where everybody thinks the same, i.e. socialism, or even communism.

  • i LOVE this song. she's not preaching i think shes just trying to tell everyone to be kind and gentle, like M.J's song Man In The Mirror tells us to take a look at ourselfs if we want to make a difference in the world & theres many others. just bcuz she uses "god" in her song does not mean shes preaching

  • who cares if is preaching or not. her voice and the song is so soothing. she is awesome.

  • Jesus the Way, the TRUTH, and the light. Read the Bible, James 4:10.....it's AWESOME!

  • Or. I won't read something based on someone who was hated so much he was nailed to a piece of wood :).

I'll worship a homeless man before I worship a catholic brainwash fairytale.

  • I saw her in concert in '99 ,still love her!

    thanks for sharing

  • good song but lets leave the god debate to scientists and priests

  • who's saying that she's not preaching? if she's sending a message of some kind.. any kind she's preaching.

music is just another outlet, but i think this song is more about kindness and hope, than just the general God thing

  • rad my comment again says nothing of her except that it is a good song im talking about the people going around saying the is a god and he will save us or the people who say there isnt a god and we must save our selves so read before you speak friend said nothing of the song just the people commenting

  • love it

  • Sounds good!

  • she change her voice lighter and darker... it sounds like 2 persons is singing...

  • thats jewel :)

  • agreed!

  • @narukagebushin She does it so well. It used to freak me out, but I love it. Pluperfect!

  • @narukagebushin yea ur exactly right!!~

  • this is probably my favorite video of her singing this, I think I like it even better than the recording

I've been attempting to do this song justice in voice lessons... I think it's impossible to do so XD

  • Try tuning to A=432 Hz

  • Or 440 hz with a Capo on the 2nd fret?

which is what they're actually doing

  • i like her back then...i get irritated how she always changes the songs so much and her voice!!

  • the reason why we pray is cause we have nothing and can do nothing without the lord.

  • Then how is it that I can achieve much as an atheist. I find it amusing that many of my favourite songs have religious undertones in them. You realise that by sayin 'nothing can be achieved without the lord" you are saying that anyone who is not of your religion is able to achieve no good -- you would do well do discriminate less

  • why should god hinder those who do not believe in him? just because his work and hand are needed for good, it does not mean belief in him is necessary to achieve anything. think about it logically, that is supposed to be the strongpoint of atheism.

  • I don't see your point. You say "his work and hand are needed for good" then say "belief in him is not necessary to achieve anything. These statements contradict each other, so which do you believe My point was all people are capable of doing good, not just those of a particular religion. What exactly do you disagree with me on, if anything?

  • God believes in atheists! And there will come a day when we will all know the truth so you can settle this little exchange.

  • Yes, that's very interesting. Perhaps after I move on from this life of looking after family and trying to help others then your God can punish me for this heathenistic lifestyle

  • look i get you got the unfounded belief in god or a god. But why do you feel the need to point that out i like music a good song is a good song i dont care if its about god or a god. but i dont go around typing that god will save us we just have to wait for him cause thats just not gonna happen thing will change when we change them so do yourself a favor and leave this argument to people with a 10 sentence opinion. Do me a favor and lok up the last war started by atheists. just do that.

  • So when people murder others, it is because of your lord?

    From the horses mouth.

  • what kinda drugs are u on?

  • acid why what are you on? lol

  • light does the darkness most fear

    great line

    AWESOME

  • yeah only kindness, now if only any religion ACTUALLY taught that, instead of beating/raping children, hatred and war against other gods, racism, homophobia and, of course, women as inferior people. My love comes from truth and being fucking deserving it.

  • to hakapiks42

    see no evil

    speak no evil

    hear no evil

    think no evil

  • Agreed - As I said, I love this song - and i find it funny, as an atheist that many of my fave songs have a religous element to them. People need to understand than kindness can come from the heart and we dont need a mythical sky daddy do be good people

  • Beautiful song and performance. She is her best here!

  • She is so beautiful Amazing song!

  • she's great!

  • You obviously haven't heard her first album... It's fucking brilliant.

  • Love this song..... <3

  • her voice is awesome!

  • This is the song they used for the Racheles challenge thing

  • yeah! thats y I searched it lol

  • OMG! I can't believe you two are fighting on a song about "KINDNESS" The whole reason I looked up this video is because the Rachels Challenge came to my school and I fell in love with her story! :D

    -Paige♥

  • they just came to my school yesterday

  • same for me. they came 2day.

  • People have their own beleifs =.= so w/e i'm not in the mood to fight about it anymore

  • this song speaks to me....

    GO JEWEL!!!!

  • R.I.P Rachel Joy Scott, this is such a good song, it was played on her video :)

  • yea it was its such a sad story. Did you accept Rachels Challenge?

  • Of Coarse! did you?

  • yes i did the did a thing at my school

  • Same here, it's really spread around

  • I on the other hand feel for Eric and Dylan and accept them deep inside my heart

  • I hope u burn and rot in hell, what is the matter with you?!

  • nothing? Am i not allowed to feel this way? if not...well i cant help it

  • NO! that's like saying 'oh ghee i feel bad for hitler, it wasn't his fault he killed so many people, i hope he comes back around and does it to me next!!'

  • its not...its understanding the true story. Eric and Dylan were victims too you know

  • It's their own fault, they didn't seek help, and they never asked the other people to back off, they only thought of themselves, thats why they MURDERED people

  • they had noone to go for to get help. Even teachers, and their own parents treated them poorly. The didnt feel loved by anyone and this makes you cold on the inside.

  • in a way, yes. but not really because they obvioulsy had deep emotional trauma and were bullied constantly. we need to learn to forgive and let go, like Craig did. let go, but NEVER forget :)

  • her music sings to my soul

  • Its funny cos she sang this live 8 years later and sounded very very different. I like this one better. She sounds so amazing, and the song has so much meaning

  • She always changes the way she sings: tempo, voice character, strength and softness, tone, even words and tune within the same song. That is Jewel. I think it depends on her mood when she sings it. She is talented enough to improvise as she performs- something most record artists lack today.

  • You couldn't have said ti ANY better! That is Jewel, and that's what makes her AWESOME!

  • Jewel sounds amazing live!

  • i know i loved seeing her live! it was fun!!!!!!

  • her voice is so unique.

  • Love her

  • al sielo con ella!

  • cool song

  • I wonder why she's not playing guitar, because she is great at that too

  • In the end, only kindness matters.

  • she sounds so good!

  • beautiful!

  • She looks kind of weird with out her guitar.

  • I Thought The Same Thing!!! It Kind Of Looks Like She Has No Idea What Do With Her Hand. But She Is Still So Awesome.

  • this song is so kool

  • i love jewels music and her aswell.

  • thanks for all of these, i've never seen any of them. :)

  • Thanks a lot, this is the first time i've seen this performance.
