  • great tip!!

  • word...thats exactly what I do....

  • Hey that is pretty good but you know I read music and play by ear to. Everybody says it is a gift, but I don't look on that way. Once you learn all the chords on the piano you can play almost any song. If a person half way sings a song it is a little more difficult to get in that key. If you have a good ear for tuning up with a person that is off key I usually try to get in that catgory that they are in and pick out the note and see if they are in a white note or black.

  • Perfect pitch isn't one hundred percent necessary. Having something called relative pitch really helps. So for example, say the song is in F major and you play a D note, you will hopefully hear that it's producing the relative minor sound of the key (the 6th). By knowing this you can figure out that the key is F.

  • @EquinoxParadox91

I never looked at Relative pitch that way before!

I'm doing a bunch of online tests and getting pretty good at the Ascending intervals, hopefully I will be able to pin those intervals down that I hear soon. Anything that will help me with working out music by ear. I'm finding it very difficult.

So difficult infact I was starting to doubt myself as to whether or not I am tone deaf.

  • how to play by ear - sit down and hit every key on the piano, till it sounds exactly like the one in the song. memorize, and repeat.

  • Adrian easton

  • I swear this dude looks like Terrence Howard.

  • Dang, I dont understand the minor 9th concept to get to the right key... You are seven steps ahead of me in music!!!!

  • Could you put these into one video... I'm searching all around for the next part

  • nice. i wanna try out a minor 9. does anyone know how to play that? can't really see his fingers in this video:\ many thanks in advance!

  • You don't need perfect pitch.

You don't need to tinkle or play "a whole bunch" of anything.

    LEARN SOLFEGGE!

Basic music education, nothing beats it!

  • @TjamVideoMan that's true, Before I entered my freshmen year of high school I got signed up in a singing choir and they Thought the basic solfege and had a poster when the Do-Do scale with notes like Si on the out side of the middle area with the basic stuff. After Learning that I have a better understanding of the keyboard :P

so ya that's a good tool to have.

  • Get a GOOD solfege book - ear training/sight singing.

You will develop RELATIVE pitch this way - you will KNOW where "doe" is in ANY song.

LIVE - you can quietly play ONE note, and from your solfege training you will KNOW what key the singer/instrumentalist/song is in.

The ONE NOTE you QUIETLY play will tell you, without a doubt, how far that note is (do re mi etc.) from "doe" of the performer. You will then know EXACTLY what key the performer is in.

    Basic music education.- unbeatable!

    Nothing

  • i havent learn minor 9 yet o.o

  • This is sick bruh!!! Thanks alot!!!

  • Are yu sitting next to a BIG window? It is so bright!

  • Nice! BTW – you can learn to play this song in half the time with new gadget that reads MIDI files.

    Google “Gizmag and PianoMaestro”

  • Sup Jamal, im about to ask my girlfriend to buy me your beginners package from your store. playbyear1&2, no more transpose, and church service essentials. These are all available right?

I'm already an active musician in church and we play contemporary, israel houghton, hillsongs, etc. I'm hoping that these dvds will definitely help me out in learning newer, fuller chords.

I'm a huge fan of yours and i'm determined to learn this number system/theory to further improve my style. Thanks again!

  • im trying to play by ear but just can't get the hang of it and i won't go to sheet music cuz i really wanna learn to play by ear HELP ANYONE!!!!

  • @4321supermusic Click on the link in the description

  • @4321supermusic lol dude just go to my channel, the video with like 27k views...It offers a full download teaching u how to do exactly that ...No sheet music involved...

  • @4321supermusic It's like 5 bucks xD, it's helped a lot of people..just check out the feedback i'm getting from it urself. :P. I'll probably give it a proper price later on, but enjoy it :)

  • @4321supermusic You see what this man can do in this video, isn't possible to learn like, in a day. Nor a week. He's doing manual transposition by ear, without even knowing the song. :P. I can do that, but it took me a lot of practice. - But another way to learn this skilll, is simply to learn a lot of songs...If you learn how to read the code of chords, for example, asus7, dmaj9, stuff like that, just look up ur fav songs, learn how to play them by reading chords over lyrics...you'll get it.

  • @4321supermusic I suggest you learn to play basic music stuff first. Learn your scales...learn the basic rules of music with respect to scales and basic keyboard harmony. What is the use of playing by ear IF you don't know the theory behind WHAT you are playing? You have to UNDERSTAND. Once you have the fundamentals of piano and music theory. Take a beginning JAZZ piano class where you will learn proper jazz theory and voice leading.

Then, learn to listen to people's tunes and transcribe.

  • I know people want to SHOW others HOW to play things on the keyboard. It isn't going to make a lot of sense unless you understand music AND your instrument. (If you can't play a basic A major chord...playing a G 13 b9 #5 by a video...you are just fooling yourself. METAPHOR: Hypothetically, if you were in an emergency room....would you want to operated on by a surgeon that had schooling, residency, and practice....or by a guy that was taught by watching a video without understanding or practice)

  • the best way to play by ear is trying to hum or sing the part of the song you like then matching the sounds on your instrument Note: won't come instantly may take a while

  • love gospel so so much,, i wann become singer on my church ut i wanna play keyboard or guitar by myself,, but the problem is there's none in my fam (parent n brother) can play music (we can only singing).. i wanna ask u, if i do course for keyboard and guitar, can i make it (while my fam and i can play any music)???

  • you good man

  • thumbs up for his energetic attitude every morning

  • purchased this dvdd looking forward to purchase your houston shed ddvd

  • This is helpful. Please post more

  • wtf the room is all white...... am i in heaven???

  • I'm thinking about getting his DVD but I'm trying to learm CCM (Hillsong, Leeland) more rock stuff is there an equivalent DVD for this style of music or can I learn it with this DVD

  • @luiszimb Yes, our Play by Ear 1 DVD will work for CCM. On some of the chords, you may have to make them a little more basic. For example, you may have to take off the 9th and 7th.

  • @GospelMusicians Alright man I broke down and got Play by Ear 1 & 2 & No more transpose. College student so you know about those pockets!! Got the vids today still haven't checked them out but I've started memorizing the chords. I was originally sticking to CCM but Gospel stuff seems fun to play. Anyway may God bless the work that you're doing bro!

  • man you look like ur floating in a cloud

  • For people who dont know what minor 9ths and 11ths are just google it or go out and buy yourself a theory book and learn.

  • @AllAroundCool lol....i still don't get it i officially in the stupid zone XD

  • @gothbabii188 LOL xD its cool It took me awhile to get it but Ive been taking piano/theory since i was like 5 so its harder to get if you dont know much bout piano

  • i love playing music especially the keyboard as me and my cousin play the keyboard through-out the service but i have a bad habit of always transposing to the key of "C" I try not to but that is the only key i fully know how to play. i practice at home aswell but i can't stop transposing. how do i break that habbit?

  • Ay yo Jamal where were u when u did this video. Looks like Heaven to me.

  • very helpful technique thanks bro

  • Wats the song frm the vid?? cos it sound fimiliar like a malaysians song O.o

  • okay you need tutorials for beginners cuz i have noo clue what none of tht is haha but i relle wanna play cuz my church needs a keyboardplayer and my dad is the pastor and relle wants me to play but i only know like those SUPER basic chords lol so i cnt relle make nuthin out of it

  • Question. Is it possible to play ANY (every single genre on this earth) with a piano?

  • @anythingnew

    Every single song, I mean.

  • Thats soooo true!!! thanks for the tip!

  • awesome tips, thanks for sharing your sea of knowledge to the next generations..

  • Good tip man. I know exactly what you're talking about.

  • i dont get how this should help how to figure out songs o.O

  • TOO MUCH SPEAKING MAN !

  • @oinkof 2much speaking, denn dont watch da fukinn videoo

  • @Jieulorderival word...i only watched it once...talent wasnt made to be spoken ...but to be shown ....GOT IT CHIMP?

  • It looks like you're in heaven because of the whiteness.

You deserve it for heavenly playing.

  • You play quite well. Side note; you deeply resemble Terrence Howard

  • Yea man, cause i have seen so many musicians just butcher a soloist in the midst of a service, and wind up doing more harm to the solist than justice. That's good doc, I love m9's the mesh with practically everything.

  • I have perfect pitch, no problem but I have to learn somehow to play the

minor 9th minor 11 etc, etc, etc, but it's amazing how musicians are given the

type of talents that they have.

  • Why is it that all Neo Soul videos the musician has a Motif...that 76 key is hella nice...

  • errr...ummm..What's a minor 9th? lol

  • That's a good tip with the minor 9's

  • nice tip....very helpful

  • nice ;D

  • that's ridiculous... the best musicians in the world play by ear! including Santana the guitarist and ME haha

most jazz and blues musicians play by ear and can't read music

Mozart had to hear everything in his head and then transpose it to his finger tips using his ears. his big sister taught him the harpsichord but he had to invent his own style of classical music. so yeah, Mozart played by ear and he was extremely gifted at the same time! LOL

you can't hear music with your nose +_+

    lol

  • Thats cool i i hear you though ive been teaching myself over 2 years now all by ear ill have some vids up soon, lol gotta buy the good equipment first though nice motif by the way

  • @alexboii Motif's have the best Rhodes sounds out of any other keyboard.

  • @GospelMusicians Or you could just get a Fender instead.. Just an idea ;)

  • @alexboii what in the hell is the minor 9th and 11th chords?

  • @ranmae57 idk minor 9th and 11th chords i suppose

  • I really like that fact that I understand sheet music though. I wouldn't recommened people only playing by ear. If you guys are looking for an easy way to understand sheet music just go to MasterOfInstruments. com (no spaces) They clearly demonstrate how to.

  • I see some folks bashing the term "Talk Music" but it is a common term in church we musicians use and have been using before a lot of you were even born. Its not a book term, its more of a church musician slang. Nice soft music in the back round while someone is talking. It helps set the mood

  • I actually like the vid but ur comment made me LOL.. I respect ur right to ur opinion and free speech and isn't that what the internet is for bashing ppl you dont know and talking trash.

  • "Talk music" LOL

    We guitarist call it "noodling".

Yeah man. Fake it till you make it!

  • That room is pure white

  • @girlslovemyvoice lolz it's god in a cloud with 2 keyboards and a camera :D

  • no because there so holy and have a close relationship with God hahaha

  • @girlslovemyvoice I got your point

  • @girlslovemyvoice or is it?

  • nice doc

  • I had never heard the term "talk music" before, but I knew right away what you meant by it. Funny.

  • Dude - you crack me up. Love your attitude, playing and all that. Keep it up my brother. D. Sprunger

  • just want to say thank you! for all your videos. They are really informative and helpful. Keep sendin the knowledge!

    janna

  • can you show the last thing you did??????

  • the last thing he did was amazing

  • a minor 9th is a chord plus the key after it with the 3rd finger minored out.

  • haha.. now i know..thanks jamal! ^_____^

  • once again jamal you are so cute

  • a minor 9th is a chord plus the key before it with the 3rd finger minored out.

  • whats a minor 9th?

  • music theory 101

  • A minor 9th would be: c - e flat - g - b flat - d the 'd' is the ninth . You have to voice the d next to the e flat to get that smooth sound... This dude sounds good but never really showed what the voicing was of his minor 9th..

  • If you play any natural minor scale, the minor ninth is constructed from the first note (root), third note, fifth note, seventh note, and "ninth" note of the scale. So is A minor it would be A-C-E-G-B. To be specific, this is not a minor 9th interval, he's talking about minor 9th *chords*. The example I just gave would generally be written Amin9. You might also see something like Amin7add9. When written as Amin9 the 7th isn't required but it's usually used anyway.

  • ohk thanks alot for that, i will try it

  • Thanks man this is just what i was looking for.

  • That's a nice technique for slow songs but what if it's up-tempo? Not sure if that will work, please advise.

  • I'm flippin witch u

  • thats a good Idea Jamal but I got a good pitch in my ear. I dnt got perfect pitch, but its good

  • where can i find minor 9th chord

  • hey if you could put a tutorial up of "there is none like you" that would be amazing.

  • That is crazy I did not know that, I usually find it the other way you did it the first time.

  • Hey Jamal, AGpraise is a good friend of yours?

Do you know what happen to him and his video?

  • is that heaven its so bright. just kidding!

  • bad lighting...just learning my new camera!

  • Don't change that, it looks kinda cool :D

  • @GospelMusicians

That's not bad lighting, that's how heaven looks in TV shows :)

Your videos are brilliant, thanks a lot for putting them up.

  • thats genius!

  • great tip with the minor 9ths for a lush sound.

you're room looks like you're in a cloud! You must have some bright lights or something?
