The Missa solemnis in D Major, Op. 123 was composed by Ludwig van Beethoven from 1819-1823. It was first performed on April 7, 1824 in St. Petersburg, under the auspices of Beethoven's patron Prince Nikolai Galitzin; an incomplete performance was given in Vienna on 7 May 1824, when the Kyrie, Credo, and Agnus Dei were conducted by the composer.[1] It is generally considered to be one of the composer's supreme achievements.
creo que la musica es hermosa y el nombre de misa nada tiene que ver con con esta belleza, puesto que Beethoven era un catolico no practicante y alejado de la religion.
The audio and visual tracks are only out of sync in this movement, and I don't know why the video was released with it, as it comes off as being amateurish and certainly Bernstein and DG would only have the best professionals doing the video. I find it strange.
I often think a sign of the really great composers is that when you're listening to them you tend to say to yourself that they were actually the greatest of all. I most often say that during Bach, Beethoven, Mozart ,Gombert, Morales and Guerrero but then I can be quite a bit of a musical slut in my affections.
I did this at the Eastman School of Music in 1984 with the 100 member school orchestra and another 100 from the community, and with the100 member school orchestra. The violin solo is simply broke my heart.
I performed this piece as a chorus member at the Kennedy Center some years ago, and I can't think of any musical solo (violin or any instrument) that seems to have flowed straight out of the composers heart like this. This has to be something that was in his soul. Spell-binding. Absolutely majestic. Mozart is my favorite composer, but I have to give this one to Ludwig. Astonishing!
Immortal Beethoven shows to all people that the violin is absolutely the best instrument exept the human voice The music is so wonderful May be look lake Holy Spirit Adore Macedonian
Responding to thebloads, you have missed Jesus here. The violin solo represents Jesus. The words are: Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domine. Bessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord. And who is coming? Jesus. The violin starts high, in the clouds of heaven, and descends, to be welcome by humanity singing "Blessed is He who comes".
Ultimele parti din Missa Solemnis mi se par nemaipomenite! Inainte de asta este Sanctus urmand Miserere(Secventa din partea a 5-a,Agnus Dei,a Missei Solemnis.
Totally in love with this solo writing for violin. After all the bombastic choruses, Beethoven opens his heart for all of us to see and it is more stunning than any chorus could be. As if he shouts at us up to this point to say now.. have I got your attention and then he unloads this on us. His endless love of God the father.
This is the total essence of the the piece for me. Framed with his exuberance for life. I was fortunate to hear the BSO/ Levine live and the tears roll when this unfolds.
heavenly celestial and angelic benedictus, 2nd part to the sanctus, sustained by one of those infinite melodies that we'll find in the last quartetts, for Beethoven the text was something else that plain simple material for singing, he gave great importance and weight to the religious content of each point, even so when he change it into music the symphonic vein again fluorished and made a work tough to match in the sacred world of music, long live ludwig van
I am a Muslim and I must say that I love as much! I believe that this wonderful and music is not directed to only one community but to all, because there is one God and we love it all!
@kamelium i can identify with you, i'm jewish and i think religious music written by geniuses like beethoven, mozart, bach, etc. is simply divine, it trascends all religions
Mes parents m'ont si souvent parlé de Dieu et les années passèrent sans comprendre et ce n'est que lorsque j'ai écouté cette musique, des années après, que j'ai finalement senti et aimé ce si merveilleux Dieu! Merci !
What makes this utterly beautiful piece of music all the moving to me is that it is written for that precise moment at the heart of the Mass when Catholics believe the infinitely powerful yet infinitely tender Christ becomes truly present on the altar under the form of bread and wine. The sheer sweetness of the music conveys something of the overwhelming consolation of Christ's presence.
(And for those who don't share this belief, please be considerate enough at least not to pour scorn on it).
i would like to agree with your interpretation, but nowhere in the sanctus do i find a representation of jesus. Only the holy spirit and man. It seems to me that beethoven wanted to bring out the divine in man, without fussing about jesus.
You could just take the comment at face value. Or would that be too easy? As far as wishing that I weren't so smart, that's beyond silliness on your part. Every situation I've encountered in life, (such as dealing with harpies) I've wished I were smarter. What about you? Since you're making assumptions, why didn't you assume that what I was saying was "Gee, I wish I wasn't so dumb; maybe then I could have a religion"?

You would be agreeing with him if you were highly gifted. However, I think this piece can be enjoyed very much whether or not you believe in a creatore. That's not a typo. The correct way to spell and pronounce it is "creatore" and "Jesus is lord", not "creator" and "Jesus is our lord".

Today a German TV-broadcast station sent an old performance of that work with
the choir of the Semperoper Dresden and so on. Should I upload the one or two clips from that event ? How do you think about that, Editor ?

Eh, let 'em scorn what they like. The music is inviolable and speaks for itself. Nothing anyone says or does can profane it.
