Thanks a lot for this tutorial. I really like how even the errors and fixes you made and showed in this video also became useful tips for beginners. Anyway, just want to ask; is rigging using this method can be utilised in Blender 2.5+?
@ward7299 oh! haha sorry about that :D I forget sometimes that there's more than one of you doing the site. But i love your tutorials anyways! I love the one that teaches you how to use the Human Meta Rig, it really helped teach me IK constraints for the leg and arm.
@TheYahmez You can, but to make the character go cross-eyed, you would have to bring the target closer/farther, which isn't too professional (but you can do that if you prefer it that way, probably) but I personally think that just scaling the eye target bone to make the character go cross-eyed
well theese days there are no meny good tutors... but you rock!!! u have my subscription, fav on thi vid, and like! definitly u leaned me a lot here, you have great way of explaining things. P.s Sry for bad eng. Keep it going. And greeting from Serbia.
ehh dude, i'm so stupid ;) i never thought of doing facial controls with armature. I've been always using shape key modifier and I had so much struggle with that ;P Looking on all those videos I was like woaaah how did they do that, where are those controls from. And from your video I managed to find out that's it's the simple rig, with custom shape... ahh :) nice tutorial though. ;)
I'm migrating from 3dsmax to blender (actually: " "I've been" migrating... " cause it is a long time)
I'm a 3dsmax lover, I'm only migrating cause the "hair and fur" doesn't behave as I need and it is a 'windows only' software. so as I fell in love with linux, I started the migration.
I love 3dsmax, ok.. BUT.. one thing that REALLY pisses me off, is the IK's LIMITS. (I destroyed a monitor screen once because of it) and I want to know if you have a tutorial about 'setting limits' in Blender.
Thanks for the help man, favorite`d for later use (Gotta get my computer). And I got a question, I assume that weight painting is how you assign what parts of the model moves with the selected bone. For my question, am I right to think that the different colors when painting are the "density" or "opacity" of how that painted area move, such as the red is where everything in red moves, no questions. But, green / yellow is where the movement starts to "fade" out?
@Yellowsnowcone21: Yeah, if you think of it like a rainbow: ROYGBIV, Red is 100%, deep blue 0%, everything else is in between. Useful for areas of overlapping influence, like shoulders.
You can change the colorband options in the "System and OpenGL" area in the preference panel, in case you prefer another color selection.
I was wondering if you'd catch it yourself, but it looks like you didn't and no one commented on it. You never renamed the ear bones, so when you mirrored/renamed the rig, the right ear was not changed. So when you weight painted the left ear, both ears actually got assigned to the left ear bone. But coincidentally, when you test move the left ear bone, the right ear isn't visible, but I'm guessing it wiggled as well.
when i try to weight pain/skin my model something very odd happens. its really hard to even explain. its like each bone down the heirachy torques around the bone joint exponentially. and sometimes it even scales the mesh and verts down. any ideas?
Yeah, but why not use and support the free alternative? Blender is just as good and they're adding features all the time.
You can't update a crack. And what happens if you upgrade your OS and suddenly your crack stops working?
Plus you can download Blender from anywhere on any platform and start designing. If you are an in-house graphic designer you aren't limited to whatever 3D package your employer has installed (if any). Blender is always in your arsenal.
very cool man, u can also select in weight paint to have only red weights, by checking all fac + vert d in the paint panel "so is on the heaviest weight".
ah ok. no, it's best to add the armature after you've fully completed the model. once the armature is applied to the model, it relies on that set number of vertices and their location.
Great tutorial or guide, as it may well be. But, I was taught (been using B3D 2.48, now 2.49 [Linux]) since October 22, '08) that one should complete the basic first (blocks & basic primitives) before adding bones. It was taught to me that it may prove to be difficult later because of the many vertices/polygons that are created on a complete model.
Is this still (ulp..here comes a Corporate Term) Best Practice? Since I see one can still add bones/armature with a completed model. Thanks.
Sorry, I thought I was clear. Is it better/easier to add bones and/or armatures when the model is a bunch of cubes and spheres, rather than fully modeled like your gorilla?
the blender (dot) org store has it. it's the "Big Buck Bunny" dvd. I used b bones because they're easier to see. i've been using blender for about 2 years now.
could you do a basic step by step basic tutorial for a full body? I'm trying to learn how but can't and can't find any good videos for it. also if you know how and u do the tutorial could u include constraints so the joints bend to a certain limit?
there is a better mirroring technique, the mirroring modifier. if mirrors while u work so u know how it looks as u work, and u only need to work on 1 side. the computor does the other side 4 u as u do your side.
THANK YOU

You should parent only 1 bone to the eyes, so it will act as real eyes, focusing on one point
