The difference between Dragon's Lair/Time Gal and Shenmue, is that Shenmue actually showed you what button to press on the screen, so it was a very different style of gameplay to the 'frantic educated guesses' of Dragon's Lair.
They might be similar in concept, but they play very differently, and Shenmue's QTE method originated the 'current' use of QTEs (as well as giving them the QTE name!)
QTEs are just a further development of what was first done in Dragons Lair. no doubt they are better executed, but the original concept comes from Dragons Lair.
it was not a new idea, just an improvement upon something that had already been done all the way back in 1983.
Don't feel bad. I get lost all the time. I get lost at the H--b-r (i put it in code) all the time. I foresee much frustrating areas having to do with the H--b-r. Especially the metal gear solid-ish part.
Tons of Sega CD games were practically based around a movie with some QTEs.
