I agree with your review on quite a few things, except two. One, the combat system. While yes, I've been wrecked by Kanji, I've come up with a few strategies to get around him... and once you think up these strategies (thanks game, giving me a save outside boss fights) or google them, the bosses become easier. And yeah, I wish that Chie was smart enough to use a revival item without me telling her, but you get used to it. second is the choices. Unless I'm going after the true end, I just go with
whatever I think is right. Same with the third, though the save often rule is really important. Heck, that goes with the combat too. But yeah, I'm kinda glad that it doesn't limit you like a lot of games. Heck, the third had you shooting yourself with an evoker (looks like a gun) to summon your persona and has basically zombies walking around! They push boundries, and don't go too far.
Just one thing: stop relying so much on strategy guides. I don't consider myself an expert on these games, but I've finished FFT, Legend of Mana and this game without guides. Guides just hinder the enjoyment one could have.
Question, have you ever played Persona 3? The reason I ask, is because I found it in a bargain bin for twenty dollars, artbook and CD included. Would you recommend Persona 3 to someone who's never played any of the Persona games before?
I haven't played any Mega Ten games, but am interested in trying out a few titles. What should I know about the series? Also, do you have any recommendations for a game to start out on? I have a DS and a PS2.
I'm addicted to this game right now. And yeah, it is frustrating to know that even though I'll be devoting a good 70-80 hours on this game, that there is a very good chance that I wont get the correct ending. That being said, I don't mind playing through it again with a strategy guide. Maybe not straight afterwards, but at least when the time comes i'll be ready ^_^
I only just bought this game on Tuesday, and I bought Persona 3 today. I wonder which ones better?
You have the best reviews. Have you ever played 9 persons 9 doors 9 whatevers on DS? lol im thinkin about getting it, its not really an rpg but it sounds cool
I greatly disagree with the whole "Balancing issues" thing, you're getting killed off because it is balanced. Whatever you can do, the enemy can do, instead of having your hand being held, given special powers, and being able to vastly over level with ease like Final Fantasy you have to actually think before you act. The point of turn based is having a balance of difficulty, Persona 4 does this very well.
I guess it does suck that the RPG games like these often ask you to play though the game twice to just get the true ending, and the true ending is nothing more than a few extra boss fights. Or to unlock some fan art.
The real true endings that I do want to seek out is endings that involve me getting to fall in love with different anime girls.
I Love this game to death but i didn't like how it was timed to save people like im stuck on kanji's dungeon its frustrating and hard even on the easiest difficulty
Is this game good for a newbie who only bought FFX in 2001 for the great cutscenes and quit after the blitz tournament because grinding is awful boring and mostly play platformers and adventuregames ?
@Unreadableanon Not really. This game is really long and it can take a lot of balance with the grinding and such. You can really screw yourself over if you don't balance properly. I love this game, but for a casual gamer it might not be fun especially since you stopped ffx because it was too hard. It is a great game but from what you said I don't think you would like it.
Not really. This game is much harder than FFX, and also comes with a tad bit more grinding. Is it worth it? Yes. Will it be fun to someone who can't bear grinding? No.
... maybe just dont worry about maxing every social link? or answering all the questions correctly? and no matter what you do you can\t get stuck and not be able to save someoen, cause if you reach the last day, you can just start over a week ago.
finally, the fusion system really isn't all THAT complex, the arcana is determined , by the 2 or 3 you use. and the rank is detemrined by an average level. thats not exactly complex.
@pablow2310 No, they are uploaded to my jfreedan account. Google "TheRPGFanatic" and you should be able to find my website. I've made over 20 videos now.
This game is so amazing I cant even put it into words It just threw me into to the T.V. and intoduced me to the amazing world tartarus... I mean the amazing world of shin megami tensi PERSONA
You are an awful filmmaker/author/journalist. You have no future in any of these industries. Give up. Consider going into radio. You have a good face for radio.
True about the fusion system. It tells you the result before you do anything, so unless you want very specific rare personas you can just randomly try around until you get something you like.
Ah Persona 4. Awesome review! I am a big fan of the SMT series so I am glad you did a review of this. The only complaint I have was that you complained about the whole "dieing from one hit" thing. Honestly, this is an SMT game, it's good to let others know, but this comes with the territory since this is nothing new. The SMT series is pretty merciless like that. Anyways, great review man!
Awesome review. I totally agree with you on the complexity of the fusion system and the balancing of the battles. However, once you get it, it makes the game so much easier. My biggest complaint of the game was how restrained you are during the day. Like if you decide to do a social link event or go grind, it takes the whole day away from you.
same complaints I have about Valkyrie Profile, making a small mistake can really cut you down... and couple that with endless unskipable cutscenes, it really takes away from the replay value that they're trying to give you in the first place

Great review man......this is one of my favorite channels now!!! I totally agree with the fusion system....it is super complicated and I wish there was a default fusion/level system for those who simply want to enjoy the game and story. Also, the difficulty of this game is very high...def need a strategy guide....and some of the bosses....even on easy....are long, almost impossible battles....still, I think it was the best RPG of 2008.....thanks for the vid!
It's been 8 months since you made this comment. I hope for your own sake, and for everyone around you, that you've changed the way you express yourself in written form.
@jlchambers82 Wow, sorry to have to disagree with you, but you are terribly wrong. You must be a new RPG player, that is only used to the newer, easier games. The fusion system is not complicated, and if you want good stuff you need to fill that compendium. If you have too hard of a time fighting anything, you do not have the proper personae and/or equipment.
This is a real RPG that requires investment of time to get the most out of it, and the game itself makes that investment worthwhile.
i wasnt really surprised with the level of difficulty in this game with pretty much every game in entire shin megami series to be insanely hard mostly the older ones and nocturne.
good review ....i played this but personally didn't think it was as great as people made out, still a good game...and you were spot on with the persona fusing,it's quite confusing...
@persona2489 See, I really gotta disagree with people that say this all the time. I played Persona 3 when it came out, and I could not stand it. I couldn't finish it, and didn't understand why everyone kept telling me to play it. When Persona 4 came out, I was hesitant to try it, but I eventually did, and now Persona 4 is one of my favorite games of all time. I love it. I went back and still tried playing Persona 3, and I've beaten it, but I still do not like it even half as much as P4.

Not trying to irritated anyone. But i do have to disagree about some things in this review.
One. The reason this game allows the enemies to one shot you is because you can one shot them as well evening the playing field.
Two. the fusions don't actually make you need a strategy guide unless you (like me) want a specific demon for the fun of it.
Three. The reason Well everyone thats my opinion i enjoyed the review.
