@kingofswing3000 There are almost numerous ideas that can improve the Magic Kingdom alone. Especially finally making much needed repairs. I had a good friend on Thunder Mountain, who also happens to be a stock holder, who told me that they keep on delaying an overhaul on Thunder for some reason, even though it is not safe. Some maintenance guys wont go near some places because it is too dangerous. Anyway, Disney can definitely improve, but I have zero sympathy for these whiners.
Budget Budget Budget. This is real life people. Work the system as much as you can to get discounts, take your lunch to work, Work as many hours a week as possibe. If they allow overtime, take it. I worked 85 hours during Easter week. Get off the insurance and find a better plan if you can find one. The fact is that when Disney's stock holders are not happy, like now with the economy, nobody is going to get more money. I have confidence in everybody to make the magic and still make a living.
I LOVE Disney. Was a CP. Been going over 20 years. 500 days in the Parks. Worked in Hospitalty there for the past three years. Alas, this vid and books like Mousecatraz are sad... but true. Cast Members are amazing. I've been in their shoes. Pay is... not exactly great. But to be totally fair, though, most places in central Florida pay zilch. Disney has its perks. It really does. Just plan to budget.
Most Disney employees are in the college program. They get apartments and roommates and all dosney asks for is $100 a week! Most employees receive $165 a week. You have $65 left for food. And considering your splitting with roommates, you only give $30. If your not in the college program, you really shouldn't be there if you can't survive.
@Mitzyclick Disney employees over 50k people. CPs only make up just over 3k at any given CP term. Each CP makes about $8hr (unless they get a Tip relatd job). Each week a CP will net about $300. Of this, yes, at LEAST $400 a month will go towards rent. Yet each CP apartment houses 4-6 people which means they pay an astronomical $2400 a month for an apartment that normally would be $600 in the area. Even with utilities it's high. Not to mention CPs are tax write-offs because they are interns.
@kingofswing3000 Disney has about 6k CPs per semester. Most extend through either the summer or Christmas. CPs who work in food and entertainment make about $8 per hour, but everyone else makes minimum. I made $7.25. You cant work overtime unless its the peak season, so you will work 40 max usually. Rent is under $100 a week, having more roommates lowers the price. I had three roommates and my rent was $85/ week at Chattham Square.
@uttom300 Which is what I said: "about $8" and "about $400 a month". I was a 2001 grad at Vista. The person I was responding to said "most Disney employees are in the college program." That's incorrect. CPs make up about 10% of total employment. In regards to living, you/roomies were paying about $1360mo. We were paying almost $2400. The math doesn't add up. I went to film school and have over 24hrs of footage from my program showing drugs; brawls; debauchery; etc. The program is college x 10.
@uttom300 Looks like they removed your past post, but we are basically in agreement. You are completely right about the apartments. They do end up being about 2400 per apartment. Each person paying $85. Kinda funny they removed your post, nothing but truth. So many CPs get termed for fights, alcohol and drugs. I was at the program In Jan and 10 CPs were kicked out the first night for an orgy in the vista way hot tub. Luckily I lived in Chattham Square, so no bad hot tubs. haha.

@uttom300 Hehe. Sounds like how I remember it. I'm pretty sure one person a week was getting booted. Some did very much deserve it. On my youtube the post is still there, but everything you said is a reiteration and accurate. I love Disney with a passion. Done over 500 days in the Parks. This docu is not Disney-specific; plenty of companies are lax in pay. Disney has their problems but they also have their perks. And really, would an extra $40 a week actually help? How much raise is good enough?
@kingofswing3000 Oh absolutely correct. If you watch part 2, then you find out they make $12 an hour. I was dumbstruck. They are complaining for basically making twice as much as I was. I mean, you know what you r going to make once a cast member. What is so unfair about that? CPs in Orlando dont even get to be on the Union and we did pretty well. Its sad, but you can easily tell who is on the union, just look for the most unhappy cast members. Oh, and angering a Union member = termination.
@uttom300 On the other hand, Disney is such a large, profitable company that rakes in billions from Parks to clothing, that I do feel like, even though small, some raise or option (do they offer 401k?) would be great. They need to follow the Google model. But Disney never will because companies like that encourage more free, out-the-box thought. Disney doesn't. That's why people like John Lasseter; Tim Burton; Brad Bird, etc. had to strike out on their own. But that's another story.
@kingofswing3000 Since I was just a CP, I'm not sure. The video says they switched to a 401k plan for new hires, so I guess so. If there was one thing that irked me about Disney, it was that they did not promote creativity. You sign away your right to get credit for any new music or ideas you want Disney to take a look at. From talking to my fellow cast members, lots of us have great ideas, but we want credit for ideas. Intellectual property is very valuable.
This is sad. I don't care what anyone says on here. Of course they don't have to make $20 an hour! But they should at least make enough to SURVIVE. The cost of the smiles these people put on children of all ages faces everyday is priceless! And they deserve to be able to work one job doing what they love, at Disney, and be able to put food on the table. Now I am not saying that they should be making as much as someone with a degree should be making, but still, they deserve better than this.
@dp51293 Really? What should one make to survive?? Have you worked for the Company like I have? This is a very fair company and a very straightforward company. Disney tells you what you are going to earn to make the magic. If you do not like that, walk away. No one is going to hold your hand, except maybe Mickey when he gives you a friendly handshake. I earned enough and I made $7.25, flat minimum wage. I can guarantee that no Disney Cast member is starving or in the homeless shelter.
Take a look at what SKILLED employees make. In 1995, Techs in some of the shows made 25+ an hour.. Maintenance? you dont want to know. LEARN HOW TO DO SOMETHING. Seriously, a monkey can push a button and walk on a treadmill with a "Watch your step" sign on his neck.
Why are all these old people whining like Disney is some corporate job. IT'S A RETAIL/HOSPITALITY JOB! Do people expect $20/hr because it's Disney?... seriously... this is so overdramatic.
@retownsend...Indeed they seem to be arguing for that. Where is this entitlement attitude coming from?? $20 an hour is ridiculous. Having worked for the mouse, I can tell you that if these people thought that working for Disney was going to be their career without getting into management, then they were complete idiots. Selfishness and ignoranance do not lead to success.
I'm sorry if working for Disney is not all magic and fun, but our job is to make it so for all the guests. Our motto is to work while they play and that is exactly what we do. It is very tough to make magical moments, but it is rewarding. Even when getting yelled at, I tried to make magic as much as possible. Disney is never going to pay what you are asking for and I signed on knowing that and had that best time ever. Get a second job, get extra shifts, or get a degree. Just don't whine.
I worked at Disney World on Main St. Jan-May 2011. It was awesome. I got paid $7.25 and came out with more money than I came in. Here's the deal: For not having a degree or at least not having a job that requires special training, $10-$12 is average for all companies. You chose to work for Disney and knew what you were going to get paid. Do not complain about getting paid what you agreed to get paid. You are there to make magic, go make magic. Want more money? Get another job or get a degree.
I visited Disney World as a kid, and for a short time my family and I had a little argument and were grumpy while waiting in line for a show. A cast member approached us and asked if we'd do the honour of being "the royal family" and smile and wave for the camera when we showed up on the big screen. We did, and we had a wonderful time the rest of that visit.
That was 20 years ago and I'll never forget it. Disney's workers are special people and deserve special compensation.
@SlapstickCoyote ... yeah, imagine, resume, played Minnie Mouse in a foam suit for 5 years. Job opportunities are really great, don't you think? Money for job training ... well, don't think so.
Okay people, this is obviously propaganda. This was a privately made movie! How do we even know that these are real cast members? Plus, Disney DOES pay minimum wage. What were you expecting? They are a business. There are cast members who are like this, and then there are cast members who are well off and happy. There are people like this at every coporation in the world. Happy people, and not so happy people. It's the way the world works, especially in these times.
Why are you guys defending this awful company? Just because you watcher their movies while you were growing up? The fact is that the company is making billions of dollars every year, and their employees are getting their food from food banks. That's not society, that's a greedy little mouse!

And to think that as a child all i ever wanted to do was work at disney because i thought it was such a magical place... this brought me to tears....Im so sorry..
Unfortunately, the greed and corruption is everywhere. I've heard the same stories from family and coworkers about their own jobs. I've seen many changes where I work, mostly for the worse, I feel. I don't believe it's just the individual companies that need to change, it's society.
Walt Disney was a great man and a capitalist. If he hadn't been, then there would not be a Walt Disney World today. A lot of people want to be angry with big companies like Disney because they see the success of those companies and they are apparently jealous of it. I spent time working at Disney World and I appreciate what they taught me about business. I applied what I learned there and now operate a successful business that benefits from Disney's success. God bless capitalism and the USA!
I don't see why they just quit or at least gather every one up and tell them all to threaten to quit. Disney was a great man, but its a shame that these corporate thieves are tarnishing his name like that.
Modern day slavery i tell you! My friend's brother went their for 1 semester, and came back with $100 less than he started with. He had to clean toilets. A lot of the time, the people missed the toilets somehow, and he had to clean that. I don't know why these people don't just quit and look for work elsewhere. At least try to look for better work.
this is so sad as to why there doing this to you guys. My brother works there and he just started over the summer. He has a free room that he's sharing with other cast members but He worked for 9 hours one day and only got $20 and he needs to feed himself. We have to send him food and money so he'll have enough. I really hope they fix this soon :(
I was a cast member about 4 years ago. I couldn't stay, the hours were too much, there was on site daycare but I was consistently scheduled to work an hour beyond the centers closing time and the lack of union back up was infuriating. I can't believe Disney continues to treat it's cast members so badly. Even knowing from experience how weak the union was, I can't believe they don't have a strike fund set up! I don't think I can ever, in good conscience, take my family to visit WDW again.
I work at Disney World and I have no problem surviving off the money I make. And no I don't receive any outside income from my parents or the government. And I work in entertainment.

if you don't like it, get another job. you're not FORCED to stay there. maybe if you had more skills than just those of cleaning streets or selling hot dogs, you could be working somewhere else with great benefits and a paycheck that would allow you to go visit WDW instead of working there. do something about it; stop bitching.
Rather than spending time making propaganda videos, why isn't our union doing something to ... oh, I don't know, GET US A CONTRACT? The current contract expired Oct. 1, and has been extended several times. Since then, the Union has only managed to bring 1 offer to a vote. They want us to be prepared to strike, and yet they have no strike fund setup. I'm a dues-paying member of the union, and the union has gotten me nothing. Why am I paying dues? that's money that could be in my pocket.
@QueenOfR0ck Not unless we're in a "tipped position" like bell services or server. We have to say no to tips unless the Guest insists, otherwise it's like we're being argumentative. Even then we can't keep it, we're supposed to give it to a manager who will supposedly use it for things for the Cast.
This makes me want to go to the park and secretly hand out $100 bills to every cast member I see. If I had the money, that's what I would do right now.
But since I don't, I can only hope that you all succeed in your mission and start being treated fairly. It is horrendous that the Walt Disney co. backs you into a corner like that. Horrible.
Disney, I nor my family will set foot in your park until you better the conditions for your cast members. You should be utterly ashamed of yourselves.
Wow - I am in tears! Disneyworld is my happiest place on earth and it has always been a dream of mine to work at one of the theme parks. I was aware that Disney pays poor wages but never realized how this affects families until now. I think Walt would be outraged at how his company is treating the cast members - these are the people we see and remember on our visits to the parks, not the executives and CEO's. DISNEY - PLEASE OPEN YOUR EYES AND HEARTS TO THESE WONDERFUL PEOPLE!
I spent 5 years with the company starting at $6.00 as an Attractions host. When I left I had been on three opening teams an several O&T roles, one created just for me. I always felt fairly compensated. What I gain from this video message is that a job at Disney is not for everyone based on how they compensate. I wish that the company would allow cast members to trade off and decrease some of the perks like merch, F&B discounts, and park admission benefits to help increase the take home pay.
I worked for Disney for three years. I was a child of a parent who worked for Disney for 20 years. I grew up loving the company but when I was old enough to contribute to the magic I was treated as an expendible piece of trash. I ruined my body and my mind trying to work at 110% to provide the quality for performers and guest for a group of managers and company bigwigs that only cared about turning an efficient profit. I was miserable and crushed to see my childhood dreams covered in shit.
I'm 21 and unemployed, my dream was to work at Disneyland because it seemed like it would be such a great place to work. After watching this and looking into different articles regarding the poor treatment of the cast members, I'm appalled and disgusted by the Disney corporation. They take in millions each year and have the nerve to treat their workers this way. As a former homeless person I've seen some bs in my life. But this, this is just as bad because they are slowly allowing their workers
I worked at Disneyland in college and I know what a risk these workers made in sharing their story. Thank you for making this documentary so that the public, who thinks they're at the happiest place on earth, can know what a truly greedy company Disney is. My heart goes out to these workers and I know that organizing as you're doing, victory shall come. Best wishes to you all.
I worked for walmart for 11.5 years. i was forced to do work that injured me; and driven to quit. disney, walmart; all these big companies want one thing; cheap disposable workers. make no mistake; to the million dollar ceos and the stockholders, the workers are nothing but faceless hunks of meat. let this be a lesson to the next generation; get real skills that can make you self-sufficient.
I took my job with WDW in 2002 due to needing a different, fun kind of job. 8 years later, I'm making $4.00 an hour more than I started at. I am not in an unskilled position. I have a permanent neck injury created by my job, short term disability is $50 a week and I've run out of the time frame for that, I'm uninsurable, and my job does not translate to the real world so there is an employment gap. I am attempting to get another job, but there aren't many. We are trapped. We need help.
I worked at Disney for almost ten years. When I left, I was only making $9.87 an hour. I started out at $6.45 an hour in 2001, part-time. Making only about $3.50 more than when I started ten years later, is crap. I certainly didn't intend to stay there that long, but with it (Disney) being the only solid job in town, it was hard to leave (with the benefits - insurance, admissions, etc.). Yep, they keep building new resorts - in Hawai'i, mind you - new cruise ships, new parks...
jacking up the ticket prices, food prices.... and they can't afford to pay us more? I certainly didn't intend to stay there that long, but when it's the only game in town that's a guaranteed STEADY job (people will keep coming here no matter how high the tickets get), it's hard to find something else. Just about anywhere else, there's a chance of a layoff; if you go to McDonald's (or some other fast-food joint), you'd be making less anyways. With them wanting to jack up the insurance....
jacking up the ticket prices, food prices ($8.59 for a cold hamburger and about ten french fries, no drink), and now want to jack up the insurance costs...I'd be taking home even less than what I already was. Guests wonder why the Cast are not "what they used to be" years ago? They can't live comfortably on what they make now. A lot of Cast live in roommate situations. They can't afford a house or a new(er) car on their own. The 15+ year Cast are not even making all that much.
As a former WDW Magic Kingdom cast member, I have to concur that the wages at WDW (even back in the 1990s) were not something that a person could live comfortably on. That being said, in all honesty, expecting Disney to pay a wage to cast members (not in a supervisory position) that would allow them to hold a mortgage, make car payments, etc, etc, would be like expecting McDonald's or another entry-level job to do the same. I feel for them, but perhaps they are expecting a little too much?

I was in attractions and operations in the Magic Kingdom. I was able to pay rent, buy food, and still have money to go to the movies or what-not. I don't feel that Disney cheated me at all - it was a fun job with competitive pay and nice benefits. But, it was an hourly wage job and not the sort of job to make a living off of for a long period of time. So, I took what Disney taught me about service and started my own business - God bless America, free enterprise and capitalism!
Sorry if you seemed to get the impression I was currently employed at WDW - I am not. And, as far as I could tell, this video was about the wages paid at Walt Disney World in Florida, not Disneyland in California. As far as California is concerned, they have their own state-wide economic problems there that I don't see how Disney could possibly be blamed for. And yes, in Florida, it is very possible, but not very comfortable, to live on $10.00 per hour.
I honestly think that this is a bad tactic from the Union. Yes, a ticket person or a food handler will not be paid the same than a driver or a manager in a retail store. Who expect someone who sells the pictures at the ride to be paid 12 dollars an hour? There are entry-level jobs at Disney. And I fell for pple who goe through bankruptcy, but people making millions also go in bankruptcy... It's not Disney's fault.
They will, at least, never be able to get rid of the free admission for cast benefit, since the average cast member would NEVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO GO THERE without it and every employee would resign on the spot.
I get that the parks cost a lot to run. But if they increased employee wages as fast as they increased admission prices, cast members would be making $30/hr by now. Stop building new cruise ships and billion-dollar resorts, lower your prices to drive people in, and PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES.
Every word is true. I worked there for five years; after five years I still made less than your average Wal-Mart employee.
Nobody expects a service job to provide a six-figure income. But it should not be unreasonable for a company the caliber of Disney to treat its employees like human beings.
It isn't just the pay, either. It's the CONSTANT chipping away of all the perks that used to make it a great place to work.
@james112680 To be fair, an honest opinion as to their skills and polish is not "hateful" to someone who has an adult ability to understand reality. You may disagree with their assessment, but it isn't hateful to point out facts as one sees them. You, on the other hand...
I think Disney screws their employees. I wouldn't work there. That said, do you really think "ticket seller" is supposed to be a profession for a 40 y/o man?
look I like when I work at a them park for over 8 years but I got married had a kid and at the point I need to move on now I make 4 times what I did there and all I had to do was look
wow just wow theme parks jobs are for kids not people that over 40 if you don’t like it leave yes it’s that easy ((its so hard to find a job in this world)) well what are you doing to better yourself to get a higher paid job nothing your sitting there bitching about job on a movie that someone Elsa is making money off
I was amazed by the middle-aged men interviewed in this video. They don't appear to have a level of polish, education, or presentation and language skills to gain a better paying job elsewhere.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised they got jobs at Disney World, as they don't seem to fit the upscale image Disney often tries to portray. These guys seem more like WalMart stockers or basic day laborers than Disney Resort "hosts". I would think they'd be more thankful for where they are at Disney.
@TP2001 I agree. Labor unions subsidize mediocrity. They've been a thorn in the side of The Walt Disney Company since the 1940s. The only thing keeping them alive are the non-English-speaking members who vote "yes" and "no" when told to. They chose a poor economy to reject a raise. Doesn't seem to be much sympathy from the public. Given all the layoffs the Company went through a couple of years ago, the recent contract looks downright generous! Even tried to give a bonus in time for Christmas!
@TP2001 I'm guessing you've never been to any of the Disney parks? They hire every day average people that love to make a difference in people's lives and make their experiences better.
very few jobs at disney generate income. the ticket price covers many things that you don't think about. landscapers, shop people, transportation, and bob igers pay . upper mangement is very important . how else would we know we're doing so well.middle mangement needs to trim down . for gods sake i have 5 bosses!
I've been working at WDW for the past 12 years, and what has it gotten me? A flexible schedule, park benefits, great friends, fun theme-park "vacation" lifestyle, all while I am now going to law school! Not to mention I started out with little skill but had the opportunity to learn many new ones through training and Disney University programs, including going from being a glorified-carny ride operator to a bartender, with no previous bar skills, bringing in tip$! I LOVE working for Disney!!!
@tracman00 - how much would you pay the people in character per hour to show up out of character? How much will you tip them? And by the way, you're still paying the $1200 to have them there. The cast members who show up in character should be grateful for Disney having invented the characters they have the privilege to play, and thus be employed.
@elltrain13 im not understanding what you are talking about..characters get paid the same thing as all cast members..ok maybe they start them out at 50 cents more an hour unless you are equity, which is few..its not about being grateful because people r, thats why they are still there..its about whats right and standing up for that, thats what this country was founded on..I worked in costuming, entertainment and imageneering and can tell you I feel sorry for these people because ive been there
I have known this for years and it kills me that the Cast Members that make the "Magic" happen for me and my family are treated so bad..
Next month I'm getting married at Disney World and we are having 2 characters attend our wedding reception at the cost of $1,200 for the hour. How much of the $1,200 will the Cast Members see? I'm sure less than $20 for the hour worked.
@thechoosendude its not a wage, its still hourly, and believe me, its not much higher...Ive done entertainment for 8 years and never seen anything close to 20 an hour unless i was doing a double..
@thechoosendude that is not true, not all people that appeared are operations cast members...some work in entertainment as well, the entertainers get paid squat as well...performers, technicians, cosmo...are all considered unskilled labor as far as disney is concerned....
All y'all check out "zeitgeist addendum" to learn more about economic basis that produces current dispute btwn Disney & workers.
Disney is known for labour exploitation offshore (35 cents/shirt sewn in Haiti, sold for $20 cuz it's "authentic Disney"). and I guess animators, back when Walt himself was minding the shop, had breaks recorded in tenths of an hour -- so that cheapass tradition continues.
Now, can any Yank out there, better yet a Floridian, explain to me how health care is tied to emp
I would find this a lot more interesting if you used more than 6 or 7 main people, and had interviewed more people who feel the same way. Right now, despite the info I'm receiving, I see only a handful of people whining. Now, I live in Canada, and earn good wages and have good health care, but I appreciate where these people are coming from. It's just not convincing enough for me to accept, and NOT treat like propaganda
While I have no doubt it is tough working at Disney for alot of people, there are thousands and thousands of other service industry companies whose employees are in the same circumstance. No company this large can survive with all the front-line employees making the same wages as management & execs. And EVERY company has employees disgruntled about their pay/benefits/work conditions. At least these people weren't laid off like millions of Americans the past few years! Union playing PR game.
@tecowdw lets not get off track, its about this company, not about that company, or being greatful or making comparisons...if we lived off of those philosophies, Americans would still be picking picking cotton and makin moonshine...We have to address what is wrong and do our best to fix these wrongs instead of sitting on our hands
@Jmccain1881 First thing, people who work for Disney continue to do so because they want to help make sure that visitors have a great vacation. Second, sometimes you work somewhere and then something happens to make you not like it anymore. But, perhaps things have gone on in your life and you are stuck at your job. Consider my husband's massive heart attack. He can't change jobs - no other health insurer will insure him so he's stuck there. It's not as easy as you think to change jobs.
@yukiphnx We made the video for $200. It wasn't a professional shoot. It was an in house Union production, and was shot on a 7 year old Sony camcorder. I think we did ok. I like that people have the high expectations that they do. It makes me think that we at least did a good enough job on it that people expect it to have professional quality. Thank you very much! Keep up your support and get the word out there!
@james112680 Its about time somebody spoke up and made something like this. My Mom, my Dad, my wife, and my self were all cast members for years.I was Disney Security and Ihad to quit. I ended up joining the army to support my family because my Disney wages couldnt feed my family. I had to sacrafice what I loved doing, my passion because of low wages, it broke my heart. Good Job! Keep it up you guys. God bless you all!
@yukiphnx I was just there last week for a week. All of these people on this video speak English very well. But the majority of the people whom were their working did not speak english. I'm watching this because it sounds like true Americans want to work but Disney opted other means. I may not go back if my fellow Americans are not being helped.
Failed to make the argument that anyone is forced to work at Disney, or that Disney is worse than the rest of the service industry. Go work at Universal Studios then, because apparently you get paid so much more money there!
OK, so let's raise the admission price to $245/per person/per day and then I suppose that will alleviate the issue; everyone can make $74,000/year. While I'm empathetic the reality is that you're in an hourly role and your not going to make much more than an "hourly" wage.
@asdf36254 but isnt that the beauty of a free market economy? YOU not only get to choose where you work but also if DISNEY wants to become like walmart and have terrible employees at minimum wage than there company will fail and somebody else will come around better- hopefully they will work for those people instead! Ive worked dead end jobs when i was younger- i didnt expect to turn around and make 15 an hour if i worked there for 20 years collecting tickets.
I'm surprised they didn't mention that Disney hires the College Program kids that come to work at Disney for bare minimum wage, have the government subsidize their living accomodations (because they're being taught at Disney U), and garnish their wages every week, leaving these kids with $30 to survive the entire week on. Between College Programmers, Part-Timers, & a "Right-To-Work" state, Full-time employees can't get enough clout to negotiate a fair wage!
i dont see it as disney, walmart or any massive corporation's responsibility to supply you with adequate working wage- you made that decision when you applied for the job. If they are evil companies that want to hire retards and college kids at bare minimum wage because they think they can get away with it- than dont work for them! This isnt communist china where we are told what field to work in, if youre job sucks do something else! or shit find a union or something
Just want to say not all cast members have mommy and daddy helping them each month. The ones that do see nothing wrong in the small pay. When they have to grow up like the rest of us they will realize how crappy the pay was for what we did.
I work at a local amusement park (not in central Florida). I've worked there for three years and am making less than the Disney employees. Am I upset? No, I'm using it as an opportunity to demonstrate the need of higher education.
Not that I am condoning the low wages that Disney pays, but I am simply saying that Disney's claim of competitive rates are correct and that the corporation is not entirely evil when it comes to wages and benefits.
My husband has been a bus driver at Disney for almost 7 years. He had a massive heart attack in August and has been home with no pay since then. He does however, receive Disney's short term disability payment - $46.17 a week - What? Really? Yes really. For those of you who say, if you don't like it leave - guess what? He now has a pre-existing condition that no health insurance company will cover - so he is stuck.
@karenf39 I worked in attractions for 10 years, was told after almost 2 years of working with Bi-Polar disorder I would have to be put on Medical leave and I could get that 50$ a week, I have been out of work since august and my insurance was supposed to last till I go back, and it got cut off. Also short term said I am not disabled enough that I can do my job according to my dr. Health services says no. I moved back to Ohio. Not on my meds, and can't work. Disney doesn't care. I wish you luck!
@purplestarz1980 Good luck to you, I mean it. It really just bothers me that everyone thinks that Disney must be such a good place to work. It is to a point, to the point where someone "can't work" anymore and then they don't give a crap.
I'm a Disney CM and have a great disdain for my job now, but loved it when I first started. However, the alternative is worse with a bad economy. If Disney wasn't making a profit & not able to expand their wealth & growth, I'd be more understanding of their hard stance. The respect factor is a big part of the issue & the wasteful use of labor. We have more Managers & Cords., than ever b4. Too many Cast members & not able to give 40 hrs. to each Cast Members. COL up & Wages same as 3 yrs ago
People who work in low level Disney jobs aren't unskilled nor deserve low wages. I was a manager at Walgreens for 3 years making a living till the economy crashed. Many of us in Florida were let go so that people could be hired with lower wages as to convince stock holders they were still hiring. I couldn't get a job ANYWHERE. i finally tried Disney, I was assured that my experience would be noted, but I was hired as a houseman, not management, making 7.95/hr for slave labor and disrespect.
@jelled123 I don't quite understand what your point is... You were given a job at Disney that was *available*. Obviously, there was't a better job available at the company which took notice of your experience, OR someone else god that job who they felt was more suited. What you and others are complaining about has got nothing to do with Disney, it's a world wide problem... It's called overpopulation! Instead of companies fighting for workers, workers are fighting for jobs now.
@Triwolf2 Instead of getting angry why don't you read what I'm saying? You're misunderstanding the term "skill" in the context of employment. In the real world you get payed depending on what skills in the workplace you have and jobs like cast members at Disney are NOT the kind requiring skills that the world of employment (not me) deems important. I think they are entitled to a fair wage, but Disney ISN'T the problem here - whoever decides what the legal minimum wage is is the problem.
Disney is cheap and they are liars to claim that their employees receive a fair wage. They perpetuate poverty in Central Florida. Would they like to live like this??????
This is what makes unions necessary. People standing up together for FAIR PAY. Unfortunately, Disney is not a closed shop, so you have a lot of non-union workers who WILL work for that money.
I have a lot of empathy for these folks; everyone deserves a living wage. But it is difficult to listen to these complaints when there are MILLIONS of people with NO JOB whatsoever right now. Unemployment is the highest this country has ever seen! I can bet there are hundreds of folks that would stand in line to take the job of each and every one of these folks tomorrow. That's not to say that Disney is right in what they are doing but let's put the thing in context here.
@RoxWeb So just because they have jobs mean they should be given substandard pay, because they're lucky to even have any job at all? I call BS. What we really need to be asking ourselves is why the top 2% richest people in this world have over %50 percent of the wealth, and the rest of us are left to fight over the table scraps?
@ph0en1xxash I absolutely agree, that changes HAVE to be made, and that will only happen when enough middle-class people lose their jobs, or continue to lose against inflation and expenses. What I'm saying is, it'll be hard to garner too much sympathy when so many people would be thrilled to even HAVE a job right now. You can't ignore that reality, because DISNEY knows it!
The union is destroying peoples lives not Disney. What do you get for your due's? The economy took a nose dive years ago and hasn't recovered at all but did these folks just get these jobs, no they have been there for years. So why now? Quit your bitchin and try and get another job. Unions suck.
@Angry0212 aaah yes, shall they go to the job store and just pick up a job off the shelf? because obviously it's that easy to find a better paying job than what they receive now in this sucky economy. SHUT UP
@Angry0212 I agree that Unions are a Big part of the Problem, but People have a right to Voice their disdain of their current plight. I don't want mandates from US Govt. but Corps. ought to be more ethical towards their Workers. Limits on Immigrants to the USA each yr, would help a lot & therefore reduce the amount of people seeking jobs & also aid in wages going up because of a growing demand for a smaller pool of willing workers!!!!! There are too many people that demand work & less for us.
Most people living paycheck to paycheck hate their job. Entry level pay above minimum wage? I've never been payed above minimum wage. You should be getting pay rises with position rises, but it's not made clear in the video if these long-lasting cast members have gone up in positions. It should be up to the US goverment to set a minimum wage that rises with inflation. The fact that it's Disney is irrelevant and yet these employees seem to think they should be payed extra for making magic? Eh?
I guess you have never been to a Disney park. That is pretty much the main goal of the company to it's guest. You probably never worked there either. The cost of living goes up and not the paycheck. And why not get paid for a job well done? So I guess you believe that someone should live in poverty because the job isn't as hard as you think it would be. Well try it you will find out that making magic isn't just smiling.
@Jumadaify I think it sucks that people don't get payed for a "job well done" don't get me wrong but the point is that in the real world you get payed for having "real" skills and qualifications for obvious reasons. I felt the same way, I worked hard to deliver guests a good experiance, because they deserve it, but the wage was utter crap. These jobs are typically temporary positions that young people take up. Unless you move up to supervisor or whatever its silly to expect more pay.
@SaiyanHajime You don't think that just because I'm not making something that it's not real. Our guests are real people. Making a vacation for some people is real.I do a real skill that many cannot achieve
@Jumadaify You misunderstand, thats not what I meant by "real" skills and qualifications. What I meant is these aren't the sort of jobs people study for or expect to be able to live comfortably on the wages of. In a perfect world what cast members at all theme parks, especially Disney and other resorts, would be recognised as "real" skills, but they aren't. People recognise computing, business management, etc as "real" skills and these people are thus payed more.
@SaiyanHajime Why don't you find out what your talking about before you write it down, not all these people are "unskilled" and even if they are not they still have a right to make a FAIR wage!!!!!!!!
@SaiyanHajime I have this strange feeling you don't live in the states. Things are a quite bit different here. You are not trained at school for a career, like in other countries. So many times you have to go with what is available. I didn't learn my job in college, which I attended and looked for a job with the college. But after one year, I considered trying to become a manager. I had a college education and couldn't be considered for the management pool. As a manager, you have to know one
@Jumadaify You're right, I don't live in the US, but I'd like to know what counties prepare you at school/college/university for employment, because the UK certainly doesn't. It's not what you know, it's who you know in most cases - I totally agree! Previously when I've applied for jobs, even crappy ones like retail, my education has been ignored and I've been told that I need experiance. There are too many people and not enough jobs.

Mitzyclick 3 months ago
@Mitzyclick Disney employees over 50k people. CPs only make up just over 3k at any given CP term. Each CP makes about $8hr (unless they get a Tip relatd job). Each week a CP will net about $300. Of this, yes, at LEAST $400 a month will go towards rent. Yet each CP apartment houses 4-6 people which means they pay an astronomical $2400 a month for an apartment that normally would be $600 in the area. Even with utilities it's high. Not to mention CPs are tax write-offs because they are interns.
kingofswing3000 3 months ago

The program is college x 10.
kingofswing3000 3 months ago

How much raise is good enough?
kingofswing3000 3 months ago
@kingofswing3000 Oh absolutely correct. If you watch part 2, then you find out they make $12 an hour. I was dumbstruck. They are complaining for basically making twice as much as I was. I mean, you know what you r going to make once a cast member. What is so unfair about that? CPs in Orlando dont even get to be on the Union and we did pretty well. Its sad, but you can easily tell who is on the union, just look for the most unhappy cast members. Oh, and angering a Union member = termination.
uttom300 3 months ago
@uttom300 On the other hand, Disney is such a large, profitable company that rakes in billions from Parks to clothing, that I do feel like, even though small, some raise or option (do they offer 401k?) would be great. They need to follow the Google model. But Disney never will because companies like that encourage more free, out-the-box thought. Disney doesn't. That's why people like John Lasseter; Tim Burton; Brad Bird, etc. had to strike out on their own. But that's another story.
kingofswing3000 3 months ago
@kingofswing3000 Since I was just a CP, I'm not sure. The video says they switched to a 401k plan for new hires, so I guess so. If there was one thing that irked me about Disney, it was that they did not promote creativity. You sign away your right to get credit for any new music or ideas you want Disney to take a look at. From talking to my fellow cast members, lots of us have great ideas, but we want credit for ideas. Intellectual property is very valuable.
uttom300 3 months ago
This is sad. I don't care what anyone says on here. Of course they don't have to make $20 an hour! But they should at least make enough to SURVIVE. The cost of the smiles these people put on children of all ages faces everyday is priceless! And they deserve to be able to work one job doing what they love, at Disney, and be able to put food on the table. Now I am not saying that they should be making as much as someone with a degree should be making, but still, they deserve better than this.
dp51293 3 months ago

Seriously, a monkey can push a button and walk on a treadmill with a "Watch your step" sign on his neck.

retownsend 3 months ago
@retownsend...Indeed they seem to be arguing for that. Where is this entitlement attitude coming from?? $20 an hour is ridiculous. Having worked for the mouse, I can tell you that if these people thought that working for Disney was going to be their career without getting into management, then they were complete idiots. Selfishness and ignoranance do not lead to success.
uttom300 3 months ago
I'm sorry if working for Disney is not all magic and fun, but our job is to make it so for all the guests. Our motto is to work while they play and that is exactly what we do. It is very tough to make magical moments, but it is rewarding. Even when getting yelled at, I tried to make magic as much as possible. Disney is never going to pay what you are asking for and I signed on knowing that and had that best time ever. Get a second job, get extra shifts, or get a degree. Just don't whine.
uttom300 3 months ago 4
I worked at Disney World on Main St. Jan-May 2011. It was awesome. I got paid $7.25 and came out with more money than I came in. Here's the deal: For not having a degree or at least not having a job that requires special training, $10-$12 is average for all companies. You chose to work for Disney and knew what you were going to get paid. Do not complain about getting paid what you agreed to get paid. You are there to make magic, go make magic. Want more money? Get another job or get a degree.
uttom300 3 months ago
I visited Disney World as a kid, and for a short time my family and I had a little argument and were grumpy while waiting in line for a show. A cast member approached us and asked if we'd do the honour of being "the royal family" and smile and wave for the camera when we showed up on the big screen. We did, and we had a wonderful time the rest of that visit.
That was 20 years ago and I'll never forget it. Disney's workers are special people and deserve special compensation.

They are a business. There are cast members who are like this, and then there are cast members who are well off and happy. There are people like this at every coporation in the world. Happy people, and not so happy people. It's the way the world works, especially in these times.

But since I don't, I can only hope that you all succeed in your mission and start being treated fairly. It is horrendous that the Walt Disney co. backs you into a corner like that. Horrible.

Wow - I am in tears! Disneyworld is my happiest place on earth and it has always been a dream of mine to work at one of the theme parks. I was aware that Disney pays poor wages but never realized how this affects families until now.

Wow, when the guy started talking about his granddaughter, I cried a little. Is it really this bad?
My family is planning a vacation to Disney World next year, perhaps we should go somewhere else instead, the employees seem depressed.

It's not Disney's fault.
baddogsboy 1 year ago
They will, at least, never be able to get rid of the free admission for cast benefit, since the average cast member would NEVER BE ABLE TO AFFORD TO GO THERE without it and every employee would resign on the spot.
I get that the parks cost a lot to run. But if they increased employee wages as fast as they increased admission prices, cast members would be making $30/hr by now. Stop building new cruise ships and billion-dollar resorts, lower your prices to drive people in, and PAY YOUR EMPLOYEES.
saeriellyn 1 year ago

I was amazed by the middle-aged men interviewed in this video. They don't appear to have a level of polish, education, or presentation and language skills to gain a better paying job elsewhere.
Quite frankly, I'm surprised they got jobs at Disney World, as they don't seem to fit the upscale image Disney often tries to portray. These guys seem more like WalMart stockers or basic day laborers than Disney Resort "hosts". I would think they'd be more thankful for where they are at Disney.
TP2001 1 year ago
@TP2001 I agree. Labor unions subsidize mediocrity. They've been a thorn in the side of The Walt Disney Company since the 1940s. The only thing keeping them alive are the non-English-speaking members who vote "yes" and "no" when told to. They chose a poor economy to reject a raise. Doesn't seem to be much sympathy from the public. Given all the layoffs the Company went through a couple of years ago, the recent contract looks downright generous! Even tried to give a bonus in time for Christmas!

I LOVE working for Disney!!!
davic044 1 year ago

While I have no doubt it is tough working at Disney for alot of people, there are thousands and thousands of other service industry companies whose employees are in the same circumstance. OK, so let's raise the admission price to $245/per person/per day and then I suppose that will alleviate the issue; everyone can make $74,000/year. While I'm empathetic the reality is that you're in an hourly role and your not going to make much more than an "hourly" wage.

I'm surprised they didn't mention that Disney hires the College Program kids that come to work at Disney for bare minimum wage, have the government subsidize their living accomodations (because they're being taught at Disney U), and garnish their wages every week, leaving these kids with $30 to survive the entire week on.

Eh?
SaiyanHajime 1 year ago
@SaiyanHajime
I guess you have never been to a Disney park. That is pretty much the main goal of the company to it's guest. You probably never worked there either. The cost of living goes up and not the paycheck.
