In a way, i'm mad they didn't rot in jail, however i'm somewhat pleased they got taste of justice for both Sylvia and Jenny's sake and the rest of the family. Sylvia's story is a story i look back on quite a few times, and each time i cry just as hard, trying to think what she went through and how she felt. Why would you leave your child with someone like that. She doesn't even LOOK healthy. Never, ever will I leave my kids with someone I have not known for at least 5 years. Sylvia's plight has stayed in my heart & soul since I first learned of her ordeal. I have read the entire court transcript, and I do not feel that Stephanie was at all to blame. I always questioned Natty Bumpo's statement that the day after Sylvia was branded, she went upstairs and "chatted" with Stephanie after taking a shower. It just seems incongruent that a young girl near death, with wounds all over her body, would "chat."
let's not wait until it's too late. this story proves the wickedness of humankind and what may be happening behind closed doors. there will be extreme consequences, if we do nothing to stop it. honestly, the neighbors who said nothing are almost just as bad for not having said shit. please, if you see something that doesn't seem right, say something. it's the least we can do to prevent another tragedy like this.
every time I read about this story, i feel so cheated that sylvia never got her happy ending or any fitting justice. sure, gertrude was convicted, but she was later released & lived out her undeserving life. nothing good came out of this poor girl's fate. makes me want to do everything i can for other victims who suffer this misery today...
It's possible that Gertrude was even more evil than we know. There are probably a lot of things about this case that will never be public knowledge. Gertrude blamed the kids (her own and the neighborhood ones) for what happened and never took responsibility for her actions. She was the adult and the instigator - it wouldn't surprise me if she did even more to hurt Sylvia than we know. The hag would have willingly sold her own offspring down the river to save her ugly, cruel hide.

Everytime that I hear this story, I can nothelp but tear up.....it's just so sad. I get emotional because I have a young daughter myself, and I think about something like this happening to her and and I cant stop myself from crying.
Also, I've seen posts that say that the kids involved should have their kids and grandkids tortured, raped and killed and that is totally sick and disgusting. They weren't even born when this happened, and they didn't choose their parents and/or grandparents. They are innocent, and certainly don't deserve to be treated with brutality because their forbears participated in the sadistic torture and ultimately, the murder of young Sylvia in 1965. I get the outrage about this case (very touching video, by the way), but I think some people are using the terrible death of Sylvia to revel in bloodlust. Yes, Gertrude was a monster, the kids were indeed responsible for their actions, but she was the adult. It most likely wouldn't have happened at all if Gertrude hadn't encouraged and manipulated the situation. Saying that these people should be tortured and murdered makes you no better.
Saddest part is that this torture could have had a happy end, just as soon as physical marks would be left on Sylvia's body, her sister could call cops and put the end to this horrific crime. I feel truly depressed and can't cope with my mind how human being could do this to innocent person.

I just discovered this case on Wikipedia the other day, and it literally made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end! How something like that could go on for so long and nobody doing anything about it is just plain scary! I feel so terrible for Sylvia. And just as bad for her poor sister, Jenny, who had to live with what she saw and experienced for the rest of her life. They are together again, Sylvia, Jenny, Benny, and their mother. I asked my grandma if she heard about this case because she was living in Indiana at the time that it occured and she said that she heard about what happpened and even knew Sylvia's family. I was so shocked when she said that. If this happened to someone I knew I would be so heartbroken. She was so pretty. I wish I coud have been there for her. I'm glad Baniszewski died of lung cancer, I really do hope she suffered as much as possible. It's ironic how she made Sylvia suffer (may her precious soul rest in peace) with cigarettes via burning her body and Baniszewski ended up dying of lung cancer... Karma is a wonderful thing. :) however, I really don't think lung cancer -- or any amount of suffering atones for what Baniszewski inflicted upon Sylvia. I'm happy and confident that Baniszewski WILL ROT IN HELL!!!

Knowing about this case really made an impact in my life, and with my heart in my hand i have decided that when i have a daugther i will name her Sylvia Marie in honor of that little girl, and i will give her all the happines that Sylvia Likens couldn´t have in this life, and if i ever get mad to her, i will remember Sylvia Marie Likens, and all the pain and suffering she had to go trough, and then i will say; How blessed i am to have my daughter here with me.

Sylvia's plight has stayed in my heart & soul since I first learned of her ordeal. I have read the entire court transcript, and I do not feel that Stephanie was at all to blame. I always questioned Natty Bumpo's statement that the day after Sylvia was branded, she went upstairs and "chatted" with Stephanie after taking a shower. It just seems incongruent that a young girl near death, with wounds all over her body, would "chat."

It's possible that Gertrude was even more evil than we know. There are probably a lot of things about this case that will never be public knowledge. Gertrude blamed the kids (her own and the neighborhood ones) for what happened and never took responsibility for her actions. I get the outrage about this case (very touching video, by the way), but I think some people are using the terrible death of Sylvia to revel in bloodlust. Yes, Gertrude was a monster, the kids were indeed responsible for their actions, but she was the adult. It most likely wouldn't have happened at all if Gertrude hadn't encouraged and manipulated the situation. Saying that these people should be tortured and murdered makes you no better.

I just discovered this case on Wikipedia the other day, and it literally made the hair on the back of my neck stand on end! How something like that could go on for so long and nobody doing anything about it is just plain scary! I feel so terrible for Sylvia. And just as bad for her poor sister, Jenny, who had to live with what she saw and experienced for the rest of her life. They are together again, Sylvia, Jenny, Benny, and their mother. I hope they are blissfully happy again.

I asked my grandma if she heard about this case because she was living in Indiana at the time that it occured and she said that she heard about what happpened and even knew Sylvia's family. I was so shocked when she said that. If this happened to someone I knew I would be so heartbroken. She was so pretty. I wish I coud have been there for her. It's not fair that this had to happen to her. Gertrude should have gotten the death penalty. At that time they had the electric chair.

I'm glad Baniszewski died of lung cancer, I really do hope she suffered as much as possible. It's ironic how she made Sylvia suffer (may her precious soul rest in peace) with cigarettes via burning her body and Baniszewski ended up dying of lung cancer... Karma is a wonderful thing. :) however, I really don't think lung cancer -- or any amount of suffering atones for what Baniszewski inflicted upon Sylvia. I'm happy and confident that Baniszewski WILL ROT IN HELL!!!

I just learned about all this today and i just cant believe something like this happened and nobody did something about it! And for the parents to have left her with that woman wasnt right, they should have moved them back to be with their grandparents and then she never would have went through everything she did. Sylvia was an extremely brave girl to go through everything she did, i hope shes resting in peace with her family. RIP.

I cant believe something like this happened. When i heard about this and i saw "An American Crime" i kept crying and crying for this girl, and for Gertrude to get out of jail is hourendous. this will stay with me for the rest of my life, and i pray that Sylvia is peace and in a better place now where no one can hurt her ever again.

I hate to lok at Gertrude's face, the fat ugly bitch, knowing how evil she is. How she and those other assholes can do this to a sweet little girl. I especially hate to look at Gertrude's picture when she was paroled in 1985. She claims that she never hurt Sylvia likens. She's such bullshitter, probably always had been. Knowing about this case really made an impact in my life, and with my heart in my hand i have decided that when i have a daugther i will name her Sylvia Marie in honor of that little girl, and i will give her all the happines that Sylvia Likens couldn´t have in this life, and if i ever get mad to her, i will remember Sylvia Marie Likens, and all the pain and suffering she had to go trough, and then i will say; How blessed i am to have my daughter here with me.

@ellibanesable well i woulda accept ur view if i believe in such things. but i dont share the same view on religions due to my knowledge on its background. not just Christianity, on all religions. I maybe viewed as being barbaric but since such is my belief, my only rational retaliation would be that of vengeance. i do not blame nor look down on your opinion, but if you really do have that kind of mercy on such offenders, i truly respect ur resolve. but I cannot say i share ur point of view.

I am also catholic, and it may sound easy for us to do, like going to the police, but thats because we are grown ups and more mature, than they were, you know that is easy to frightened a little girl, and blackmail her.
As a child, i think her little sister felt alone and scared by seeing all the others having part on it.
Im sure she feels really bad, but is not her fault, she was like a rabbit in the middle of a jungle.

I have read about some distressing murder cases over the years but no single murder case has ever distressed me more than this one. I'm not deeply religious but I hope that b**tch (I refuse to even write her name) that orchestrated the abuse on this child is burning in Hell for eternity along with the other kids that joined her in inflicting the prononged and increasing abuse on Sylvia.
What that child went through makes some torture murders seem merciful by comparison.
