He's actually NOT an insurance agent, though he works for the company. I live in Columbus, Ohio (international HQ for Nationwide) and he works there, downtown.
I believe that this is a good commercial because it shows that Nationwide Insurance has a very diverse group of employees which makes the message personal to the people viewing it.
Everyday people work there and they want you to know it.
The commercial also shows that Nationwide Insurance takes responsibility and actually listens to complaints and tries to fix them; how many companies do that?
This is easily the strangest ad I have ever seen. It's like they go out of their way to make it awkward. The guy in the background shouting, "Is that true?", the awkward little laugh with an obvious cut to and from, the emphasis on the seeing eye dog...
Either they're trying to exploit his disability to garner some sort of "sympathy vote", or they're just clueless about how to make good ads.
We're not picking on Mr. Piccerello. We're pointing out that selecting him to appear in a nationally televised ad is highly dubious, because it generates a strong negative image for the company. Unfair as it may be, most people simply are not comfortable with the thought of someone that severely handicapped as an insurance agent--much less that he's "on their side". Coupled with the rather negative sentiments in the ad, this is just poor advertising. It's about the message, not the man.
he is blind, as you can tell by his wondering eyes and seeing- eye dog. just because he is blind dosn't mean he can't work just like any other citizen. great commercial nationwide
This is a really bad commercial. I never really knew Nationwide had a lot of complaints until now and they would really have to prove to me that they are good if they wanted my business.
Some of you need to understand the marketing and how Nationwide Insurance works. The company is reaching out as a company that is an "Equal Opportunity Employer".
What is wrong here is nothing. Just because the CSR is blind, doesn't mean that he can not perform a job, or perform for a commercial.
Some of you can be so blind to even see how this commercial is perfect for the everyday person.
he is obviously blind. thats why he has the dog and his eyes arent facing the camera, that doesnt mean that he can't take calls from people. you guys just need to grow up and learn handicapped people are capable of more than you think.
Worst commercial ever. You picked someone who-- as lovely a man as he may be-- seems to have slight retardation and spends 30 seconds talking about all the complaints the company gets.
Not someone I want to trust with the most stressful events in my life-- the ones you need your insurance agent for.
Why hasn't anyone commented on this? If he is a real agent, I applaud him for the discriminatory hurdles he surely had to jump. But, doesn't anyone else find this ad strange? Be honest. :)
I Love this guy, :):):):)

Let's be honest guys, I'm sure he's really nice, but this is not the guy that we want "on our side." Sometimes it is better to use real actors.
