The intro brings Rainbow's Tarot Woman to my mind... But this is great song (Tarot Woman too, of course)... But I like a lot of the riff... Good atmosphere, one of the greatest song after Purple reunion.
Looks like when Spinal Tap left hard rock and became a jazz band. I always liked Steve Morse and all, but he never had charisma or even looked like a guitar hero. He looks like a guy working in a guitar store. DP without Ritchie Blackmore is like Van Halen without Eddie. It simply can't be. Period.
@sejemandhaha - Ian Gillan is a big part of why Deep Purple become the monster they was in the 70's, Roger Glover has been apart of Deep Purple / Rainbow just as much as any other member, Don Airey has a long history with the bandmembers and is approved by Jon Lord himself. As for Steve Morse he has done a fine job carrying on the band after Ritchie Blackmore. I believe they have every right to keep the name even dough the band has had ALOT of bandmembers in and out.
Yes, you are absolutely right. But the classic line-up is the "Mark II", consisting of Ian Gillian (vocal), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Roger Glover (bass), Jon Lord (Keyboards) and Ian Paice (drums).
@GeorgVanHalen A few years ago Roger Glover was telling me how they used to be called "Roundabout" and that the name still sticks with him as while the band goes round and round the members jump on and off onto different bands, come back, go again...
I've always loved Steve Morse...better than Richie Blackmore, in fact. I was skeptical when I heard that Jon Lord was leaving the band. I thought no one could take his place. But frankly, I am completely amazed by Don Airey. I don't know if anyone could have been a better replacement for Don Lord than he has been. Rapture of the Deep is the best DP album to come out in the past 15 years.
I agree with you caspianrex. I Would have never thought of DP without Blackmore and Lord. But I am impressed with Morse and Airey. The band sounds mature.
Sweet riff. I love the solo, but the I'm sorry to say that the rest of the songs on this album are crap compared to the old stuff (Except from Rapture Of The Deep of course)
can't really agree. I think all the songs on the album Rapture of the Deep are quite good. Especially for a band that's been around for almost 40 years !
Let's face it: all DP fans misses the other Marks, but... Steve Morse is a blessed musician. Don Airey kicks butt to the max. Long live to these masters, along with both Ians and Glover. Deep Purple is a forever stuff. Love them unconditionally, listen whithout prejudice and enjoy the MUSIC the make. Regards.
Don Airey had Jon Lord's personal stamp of approval when Jon retired from Deep Purple. He said if there was any keyboard player good enough to fill his shoes, it was Don Airey.
Jon Lord is my favorite keyboard player of all time, but Don is no sneeze having worked with Gary Moore, Ozzy Osbourne, Whitesnake, Rainbow and many others. I saw him with Ozzy in '84. But I did get to see Mr. Lord with Purp twice the next year. I'll never forget that.
I'm not sure, I know Don Airey replaced him for two years at one point near then, and then became permenant shortly after when John left for other things. Jon Lord may have already gone by this time or he may simply have been out for a bit.
Granted John Lord is far better than don airey at playing this style, but I think Don does a better job than most others would.
Jon Lord Left in 2002, and is currently working on music with symphonys, unfortunaly not Don Airey nor anyone in the world can recreate the Mr.Lord Sound. Its Jus not purple without him :(
Deep Purple is like the best band ever. i got the dvd of the show they made in montreux, and you know what, i was at montreux when they did that show, me and my dad were like, OMFG, i really want to hear them live cuz my dad is like 50 years old, so DP is one of his fav. bands, and im 14 and i love it too
my favorite thing about steve morse is no matter what the speed of the solo/song is he picks every note in it...the only time he doesn't pick is when he is string bending! Amazing!
come on gyus he is a professional drumer!!!he plays drums up to 30 years(i think).he has the experience to react in occasions like this...if he was a beginner, maybe he would stop in the middle of the song to take another stick....
Love DP like SM, BUT, if you hear enough of his playing you pick up that nearly every rock has at least one or 2 ascending and descending scale runs. Gets a wee bit samey after a while.
ah cool, thanks. i honestly wasn't expecting a reply. from what i've read, Mores wasn't accepted very well by many fans. so far i think this is my favorite
It's a shame, I think a lot of fans like Morse, it's just that there are people who never got over Blackmore leaving Purple and are more Blackmore fans than Purple fans, which again is a shame.
This is a great track, it's actually one of my favourite Purple tracks (along with 'Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming' - another Morse song)
I personally am a big fan of Steve Morse, one of the best guitarists I've ever seen play (I am lucky enough to have seen Purple with Morse twice).
i'm not much of a purple fan, most of what i listen to is heavier. i actually found out about Morse from Dream Theater and i listened to a little bit of the dregs and Morse's own band and all of that was really cool. i like what he's doing with Purple though. i'll have to hear a lot more before i decide whether or not to go see them live though
Very impressed by how Paice handled that...switched to hi-hat pedal straightaway, went straight for the stick, never missed a beat. If you weren't watching you'd never know. True pro.
Gillan didn't ruin s&#t! This man is legend, I hope I sound like this after 40 + years ! This song rules!!! My first Purple concert was Perfect Strangers tour and hooked for life. Love how Morse has morfed his style into this classic DP hard driving sound.
Listen to Ritchie's improvised solo on Anya from Stuttgart 1993. It is very middle-eastern in style. Ritchie has a very aggressive and exciting style. This song would be great with him playing. However, Steve is also a fantastic guitarist and is the current Deep Purple guitar player so I wish people would accept it!
first of all, no it would not be good if blackmore played this song, and second of all ritchie does not have the tone that would fit this style of song, third of all ritchie could not be able play steve's solo at all.
I know it's part of the song mate, calm down. All I'm saying is that a great song could be made perhaps even better, in my opinion, if Morse's guitar line was unaccompanied by Gillan.

Gillan's a good singer but he needs to shut up during the guitar solos and let Morse do his thing...

I know it's part of the song mate, calm down. All I'm saying is that a great song could be made perhaps even better, in my opinion, if Morse's guitar line was unaccompanied by Gillan.

Well, that was completely unneccesary. I happen to have nothing but respect and admiration for this band, I was only voicing an opinion.
