  • I love listening to this song, but absolutely loath playing it. (2nd trumpet.)

  • 1:52 = fucking awesome

  • i am playing this in wind ensemble at my high school - it is insanely wonderful to play. the time signature is really wild all throughout the song!

  • HOOOOOOOOOLY CRAP THIS IS AN EPIC ASS SONG OMG I WISH WE PLAYED THIS MY SENIOR YEAR BUT WERE NOT UGH :(

  • for everyone that likes this song: if you have this neat program called smart music you can actually play it. it takes a recording of the band and gives you the music (for whatever instrument) you can even get a microphone so it can record and grade your performance (but i hate using it on this song because it always makes me feel really bad) :D

  • 7 people that couldn't count or sub-divide when they tried to play this, disliked this song.

  • we started this last week in band and i play first french horn and i like the rip but its hard to get it right and in time and to not split the note lol. lots of fun though despite the time signature changes from 7/16 and 11/16.

  • there is no signature in this song. Just play with your feeling

  • ive played this before at a band camp. the time signature at the beginning switches between 11/16 and 7/16 every measure and then sqitches to 4/4 and 3/4.

  • Thumbs up if you agree that Samuel Hazos music is the best!

  • The beginning bars are alternating between 11/16 and 7/16 (3/4 and 2/4 without the last 16th note) then it goes into 4/4. Most amazing song I've ever played.

  • I'm writing a report on Mr. hazo and actuall got the oupertunity to interview him and he told me that this song is completley based around the number seven, from the seventh interval jump to the time signature (which is 7/16 but constantly changes and eventually falls into a 4/4 groove for all of you trying to figure it out) to the number of notes in a phrase. and even that fact that it was dedicated to George Gershwin whose initials are G.G. which is the 7th letter of the Alphabet. =D

  • @duhcornmaster Wow I'm so jealous XD This just goes to show how much of a musical genius this guy is, pretty amazing when you think about it

  • @CharlieRutlage i know you are

  • we played this song for marching band.. epic

  • @pacers1755 Seriously? That must have been a hell of a time, huh? XD

  • The 7/16 is for the 7/16 bpm tempo. So slow. And boring.

  • AAAAAAHHHHHHHH! The time signatures are so trippy...

  • I know that the grades 11 and 12 band plays this piece at my school..... Just have to wait one more year! :D

@CharlieRutlage Saying something is "fucking stupid" is a very childish and immature way of expressing your distate. Do you have anything against 7/16 and 11/16 that you'd like to share or something?

  • Great song, great style, over all great, band played it 2009, new band director dosnt seem promising, miss u Kevin you were a dick but an amazing director. USSBA 2011 !! Huge awards

  • Completely AMAZING !! love this song

  • If you like this, try Raging Machines, By Brian Balmages

  • We're playing this in my freaking high school band. So yeah of 3 bands it's the top one but still. I'm 1st bassoonist woo! Anywhoozel, on a composing note, I absolutely love the beginning 7/16 and 11/16 alteration. That jumping sort of feeling, just beautiful. I also love the chords, the harmonic and timbre blends used. And lastly, most astonishingly, I love how most of the song doesn't SOUND awkward- it's so difficult but it sounds so smooth when played well. Bravo Hazo!

  • wow, listening to this after having samuel hazo came to my school and conduct a whole concert with his songs, including this one, its very different because i know what he was thinking of when he composed it! very cool!

  • i rocked the chimes when we played this

  • can hazo write music or what?! :-D

  • I want to do this version. Ours was aranged differently becaused marched this song a couple years back along with Ride and Perthshire Magisty. That was a great year.

  • @prestonsitton

I love perthshire majesty. Very pretty song.

  • definitely one of my favorites. And by the way, this song is rarely in 4/4 time. I remember playing it faster though. hmm. Oh well still definitely amazing.

  • oh samuel hazo how i enjoy your ridiculousness in your time signature changing and obscurity

  • Comment removed

  • The awkward moment when it's 4 a.m, you've listened to this countless times and have yet to figure out the time signature.

  • @AshMoney95 It alternates between 7/16 and 11/16 for the 35 seconds or so, then it's in 4/4 until it starts alternating at 1:18ish, then sticks to 4/4 until the end.

At least, that's if I remember my score correctly.

  • @Hemmingfish Well, Your right about the alternating between 7/16 and 11/16.

but it also goes to 2/4 and 3/4 just before 0:34.

And there is a 3/4 bar just before the percussion break, I believe

  • Comment removed

  • @AshMoney95 if i can't figure it out... i just conduct in 1/4.

  • Comment removed

  • @AshMoney95 at the beginning, the time signature switches betwee 11/16 and 7/16 every measure, then it goes to 4/4, then 3/4, and switched between those after that

  • @AshMoney95 My drumline music has it going in 7/16, 11/16, 12/16, 4/4, 3/4, and 2/4. lol

  • @AshMoney95 lol, it goes from 7/16 one measure to 11/16 the next repeating for most of it, then the slower parts are in common, then back to 7/16-11/16 main.

    Thus, sevens.

  • @AshMoney95 It switches back and forth from 11/16 to 7/16 for sixteen measures; then 2 measures of 3/4, 6 measures of the 11-7 alternation again, one 4/4 measure, two 3/4 measures, one 2/4, then 21 measures of 4/4, alternating 11-7 for 6 measures, one 4/4, two 3/4, one 2/4, 28 measures of 4/4, six of 3/4, and the rest (38 measures) is 4/4

  • @AshMoney95 it switches a lot.. most of it is in some form of 16 though. my school played it last year so ive seen the score. haha.

  • @AshMoney95 it's written in 7/16 to 11/16 every other measure :P

  • @AshMoney95 The reason you probably still haven't figured out the time signature is because it changes about 35 times during the piece. One of the toughest I've ever played!

  • @AshMoney95 it starts in 11/16 and 7/16

  • @AshMoney95 it alternates each bar from 11/16 to 11/7 and then it changes into 4/4 but that's all i remember from when i played it at school but theres probably more

  • @AshMoney95 It switches between 11/16, 7/16, 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4.....Sam Hazo is a time signature god haha

  • @AshMoney95 at the start? 11/16 followed by 7/16... i don't blame you :p

  • @AshMoney95 swtiches between 7/16, 11/16, 3/4, and 4/4. We're playing it in my band at school.

  • I got the meet Hazo this week. We played his piece 'Voices of the Sky' and I got to play his percussion ensemble piece 'Get Off my Case.' It was so much fun. Can't wait to see him again next year.

  • Beautiful Song.>>!

  • I played in the clarinet section for the world premiere of this piece, and was blown away by it--still gives me chills. It's so reminiscent of Gershwin, a wonderful inspiration for others (think Blue Shades?), yet it is unique in its own right. I was honored to have met Samuel Hazo, and was absolutely blown away by this piece (as well as his others I later discovered)! This piece is an absolute joy to play. Once you get into the groove of it, you're entranced! I wish it was longer!

  • We marched this :) along with seal lullaby and first circle.

    Oh.. memories!

  • @marchinggeek3 but why did we have to get second in state again

  • I'm percussion 1 on this piece... This should be interesting :p

  • great song by a great composer who wrote in my opinion the best song for a wind ensemble ever arabesque

  • Ahh...the french horn... =D

  • sam hazo is obviously a percussionist

  • @MSteve93 He's also obviously a beast.

  • @MSteve93 Yes he is. I was in a band he directed at SWOSU Band Camp 2011. He told us his story of how joined the band and all he could play was the bass drum.

  • @MSteve93 Yes he is, he's a clinician for our school right now, we're going to Midwest and playing one of his pieces. He is absolutely amazing!

  • @MSteve93 Or a hornist....the best songs for horn are always Sam Hazo's pieces :D

  • @MegoEggo17 except for ride, i think his mind was set on sax for tht song cuz tht solo was BEAST

  • @56ratman Yeah that's very true. Sexy Sax Solo right there hahaha

  • 1:53 was my part man! Euphonium was my instrument and that was my time to shine :)

  • i loved performing this. It was difficult but we pulled it off. and seeing the judges faces when they saw the score was priceless. some of them had never heard of sevens...ha =) love this!!!!

  • seeing a marching band march this would make my day

  • my band is playing that now. it's such an amazing piece and we just sit there and dance to it during our rests ^^

  • I think Hazo just likes torturing high woodwinds? Lol Ride, Sevens, and Exultate all take so much work to get down the accuracy. I would hate to play first clarinet or flute in any of those songs. Glad I play alto.

  • @helloman1556 i play flute. and it's really fun to play Hazo's stuff.

  • @MegaLostInTheDark I'm not saying it's not fun, but it takes a lot of work to get everyone right on with each other.

  • @helloman1556 true... we're still having trouble at measure 61 tounging together.

  • @helloman1556 I remember when I was playing this, I was not only first flute, but lead flute in my band.. This was one of the most complex pieces I've ever played without a doubt..

Samuel Hazo, I love listening to your recordings, love playing your pieces once I get them, but HATE learning them!!

  • man i hope we play this in high school next year i LOVE Samuel Hazo hes a freaking genius!!!

  • The best thing is when you find a band that can't play 11/16 or 7/16, so they just change it to 3/4 and 2/4.

  • my older sisters highschool band just played this and it sounded AMAZING.. :)

  • Love this song! I played Tuba in my High School Wind Ensemble and we pulled this song off at our Concert Festival last year! Im in college now and haven't picked up the Tuba since high school! smh lol :)

  • i saw a band at sate marching to this and ride... they made it to finals but im not sure what they placed. all i know was that i was extremely confused as to how they marched to this

  • @dansing303 You can rewrite the meter while keeping the same melody so its at least somewhat easier to march to.

  • man i love this song nd its jazzy flavor i cant wait to play it @ my concert !!all bout the tubas!!!!

  • @Jkid1966 isn't it always just about the tubas? :)

  • so there are six idiots that are allergic to beast music. smh such a sad life

  • Sounds like something that could go on Super Smash Brothers Brawl. Can't wait to play this song =D

  • I play the harp part on marimba. You don't understand how much of a challenge yet beautiful it is.

  • This a very sexy song.

  • omfg we need to plat this rush and another sam hazo perfect orignal nxt year

  • Sounds like it would be the Price is Right new theme if Chuck Norris was the host.

  • I love those chords

  • the music isn't too bad once you get used to. When I played it as a freshman in high school, we had so much fun with it and got used to the time signature rather quickly!

  • We played this for an Honors Band concert a few years ago, I was one of only two freshman in this. (All upperclassman band.)

  • You should all be jealous of my mad skills on this when I played gong. :D

  • Nice... though i think that Ride has got more of an edge to it.

  • we played this for our field show my eighth grade year and completely sucked it up. it's nice to hear how it's actually supposed to sound

  • when i first tried playing this i almost cryed lol it was soo hardd! but now i love itt!

  • Sounds like the theme to the to an old 70's sitcom

  • My band is so awful at this its funny!

  • That low brass part around 2:00 is awesome!!

  • i love this song

  • I totally played this in symphonic band my senior year in high school. Great piece!

  • Sam Hazo conducted my County Band.

  • I actually met Hazo at a MS All-State Band Clinic!!

  • I absolutely love Samuel Hazo.

  • this song is pure genius!! i loved playing every second of it!!!!!

  • 11/16 is a weird 3/4 with an extra 16th beat on the and of 2 and 7/16 is basically 2/4 so you can count it all like an awkward 5/4. my high school is going to chicago and we are playing in the symphony hall and this will be one of our songs

  • @adstoneable 11/16 is not 3/4. They are two seperate time signatures, and one cannot say that one is the other. Another thing is that this is a piece, not a song. A song has words, and a piece does not.

  • @musicalone56 some pieces have words, last time i checked songs dont require words if we are getting technical, and i know 11/16 isnt 3/4 i just said it as a helpful way to count it

  • If you really understand this piece, you will know why this song is called "Sevens"

    =]

  • 4/4 is for suckers.

  • @dbc616 unless its a 8/8 polyrhythm in a 3+2+3 pattern, then thats fun

  • @dbc616 LOOL i am playing this in my school

    11/4 FTW!!!!

  • I want to make a jazz band cover off this with an electric bass, guitars, and good ole cheesy synthesizers... This and Ride, although Ride would be more suited for metal I suppose.

  • @persayios oh ic,what band are you from?O.o

  • I love this song!!!

  • I LOVE THIS PIECE. It seems so awsome. My band teacher is having us play it for our final so i will c how that works out. I LOVE THE BASS LINE PART!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • just got this piece today. 7/16 and 11/16 :O sounds good though

  • @nick87880 Haha it's actually directed in 3/4 time for 11/16 and 2/4 for 7/16. Not bad!

  • my band teacher recommended it to me and i fell in love

  • you people argue about the stupidest things on here

  • I guess our school is going to play this for this year OBA =]

it will be so much fun!!

  • This is the only composer I find interesting to listen to his songs. Went to a college performance, they played two of his songs. That in it self says enough...

  • @redlight687 have you listened to any of Ticheli's songs?

  • Brings back so many good memories...ahh band how I miss thee!

  • one of the songs we are playing now. alto/bari sax here

  • We're playing this song for our band concert, it sounds really cool but it's kind of screwy going between 11/16 and 7/16 though

  • Last year our High School band played Rush, and we received a one for it for Large Group Contest. After hearing this and Ride, and playing Whisper to Their Souls for our Christmas concert coming up; I only wish to play Hazo from now on.

Trombones eat the rest of the band btw.

  • Tuba part is exxxxxxxcellent, i have to play this for concert band class.

  • aww i miss band now:(

  • i love the trombone part right after the percussion solo

  • great song! i like how sam hazo writes classical music that sounds so jazzy! :)

  • the first time i saw the piece i almost panicked because i never saw 11/16 and 7/16 before

  • Comment removed

  • @marochima2 lol when we sight read it at my highschool my face was blank. i didnt know those existed lol

  • @marochima2 Yea you can read it as 7/8 or 5/6.

  • @charlescrump 5/6?

  • @marochima2 same here! gulp! but after a whole day of practicing, we got it :D

  • @marochima2 mee too i was like "who is this for?"

  • @marochima2 Trust me, I know how you feel

  • @marochima2 yea so did my director last yr when we played it apparently... he was trying to add 16th notes and make it 3/4 and 2/4 stuff and i kept telling him nooooooo...... but anyways this is my favorite song i have played in band.

  • @marochima2 dont lie, you know that just like me, you did panic lol

  • 2:08. best part ever :]

  • @xxxx0bleach0xxxx

you wouldn't happen to play sax, would you??

  • @lizzyb313 i do haha XD

  • "Played this in high school. OF COURSE I WAS PRINCIPAL (instrument). Man we sounded sooo good. I even played this while i was PRINCIPAL (instrument) at ALL COUNTY/REGIONS/STATE/NATIONAL/INTERCONTINENTAL BAND" - [Youtube user]

But on another note, yes, this song is definitely epic. Good job Hazo!

  • @AnbuXSwordsman wow someone's an over achiever..

  • how could you dislike this song? It's so fat and groovin.

  • @ducttapenazi7 I hope you mean phat. lol

  • Played baritone sax in an honours band and we played this song. Was so fun :D

  • All of Hazo's music seems to sound the same. I mean, it's good, but still...

  • great song whats the note the pit in the begging

  • ...?????????????

  • Samuel Hazo is the s**nhands down

  • I played the euphonium in High School. This song definitely gave me a ride. It was fun!!!

  • ohh, we were gunna do this song for all star concert band in april 2010 but we chose japanese folk song instead

  • <- only freshman in symphonic band (the best of the two groups our school has) since one of the best percussionists my school has had...but now im forced to march snare...im keyboard all over

  • When I played this with MYM the whole percussion section started playing the 2:35 section with mallets

    it was mad

  • whoever hates this songs theres something wrong with u to me this seems like a jazz band song

  • anyone that likes this song should try to find the production notes that go along with it, it's an incredibly interesting story :)

  • <- played this in high school honor band. 1st bassoon :)

  • @TylerJohnson2009 YEA! Go bassoon! thats what i play!

  • @nolfavrellcalamakta yeah bassoon! hah

  • @TylerJohnson2009 No insult but, most bands in HS only have 1 bassoon! LoL, I'm an alto myself thinking of going to bassoon or oboe because we have 7 altos

  • @ebyros Oh gross. You really need to switch.

  • @ebyros we played in at a Region Honor Band. there were 2 of us actually haha.

  • Makes me feel like I am in a casino. Sevens fits! Good Job Mr. Hazo

  • @MaestraInTraining1 I never thought of that... yeah, and 777 being the victory number.

i remember him explaining this song to me in person... so awesome.

  • @HeroRaven I am priviledged to work with him this summer at ONU's Music Camp. I entered a composing competition and recieved 3rd place. Because of that, I recieved free tuition and placed in hi advanced music theory class. I upload the winning piece on Youtube very soon.

  • This would be so awesome to march!

  • <3 AMAZING!

  • Yea I do live in Howard

  • @hapypo regional repertory wind ensemble? i guess i'll meet you there haha

  • In the first and i believe second trumpet part, the offbeat 16th note section at 2:23 always confused me. :d

  • Played this in grade 7 and kicked its butt as first flute :) Loveeeed the bass line and percussion section.

  • We are playin this for our high school and wow we got it by the balls! I beast it on that first chair first part trumpet boyah!

  • i love the percussoin solo part
