I really like Korg's stuff but I'd say the Micron is a much better value. I has twice the polyphony and amount of parameters. The Micron has a lot of DSP power which is dedicated primarily to the sound quality so it produces some pretty amazing sounds.
I feel your pain over the zombe incident, but to be honest you really can't do anything about it apart from flagging the video and filing a DMCA claim. Even then it's hit and miss.
Although to be honest, once he's not making money off it then don't worry about it too much.
There's a difference between sampling, making something your own, and literally just taking someone else chord progression and layering a beat underneath. It's not like Zomby cut it up or anything creative.
@Gtechture fuck me, get over yourself mate. Its not like Zomby is making millions by sampling off your track is it?
and anyway instead of moaning, why dont you use your new found internet fame to up your profile in the electronic music scene, you obviously think you deserve it.
He's not making millions. I was pissed when I found out and I'm over it and its not a big deal to me. I'm not interested in music or popularity either. I'm interested in synths and programming and I make these video's to share with others who are interested in synths. The comment's are a few weeks old by now I'd like to talk about synths again.
im just learning about synthesizers and im trying to learn how to use them so please noone make fun of me, but i was wondering, can you hook this up to an amp and get the same noises that you were getting here, or do you have to be using a computer program
hey, great little synth - I have just ordered akai miniak which is supposed to be based on micron. Do you know if it's as good as micron? Anyway miniak sound really good and if some here didn't see that it's micron they'd thought it was some serious analog synth :) I agree those comments about not being as good as analog are really silly ...
cijsinister6 is a no talent youtube troll. This is an amazing patch and performance. Very impressive stuff Getchture! You should post the mp3, I love this tune.
Its always the same old operative criticsm. Your judging one class of objects by the standards of another class. If you beleive analog synths are somehow more authentic than digital synths, doesnt it follow that a lute or a zither is more authentic than both? If your looking for 'authenticity' in this sense, i'd forget about synthesizers all together.
@Gtechture I'm simply trying to state that the micron sounds like a toy, microkorg nor the venom nor any other cheap synthesizers sound like a 30$ toy piano. btw analog > digital if you think otherwise than you should forget about synthesizers all together.
You've already made your prejudice clear. Let's talk about facts. Digital synthesizers hold many advantages over analog's in the areas polyphony, multitimbrality, flexibility, and the multiplicity of parameters and their functions, just to name a few. Digital synthesizers are not lesser analog just like soft synths are not lesser than hardware synths. They are different breeds and have different potentials.
If digital synthesizers do operate in their own realm of potential rather than emulating something else, wouldn't that make them more authentic? Well, I wouldn't expect you to formulate such an argument but it would be useful for everyone that reads these forums if you did.
Furthermore, saying digital synthesizers don't sound analog makes is as helpful as saying analog synths don't sound digital. A more useful statement, though maybe too self-evident to be comfortable saying is that digital synthesizers sound digital and analog synthesizers sound analog and in many cases on may sound more or less like the other. If analog is your preference fine. Who can deny the character of analog sound?
What I take offense to is the extreme prejudice you and other youtube users express through you overly simplistic banters. If you want to be critical please do so but analog > digital is a non-argument. I feel a more useful criticism would on the fact that digital synthesizers try to hard to emulate analog sound rather than exploring their own potential.
...ehhh? are you saying that the micron sounds worse than every other "cheap" synth? scour the net and, despite the commercial success of the korg, by far more people favor the micron over it. korg has released so many preset machines over the years: look and sound great, until you pull the covers down and relize they put so much effort into making the presets good that they overlooked many other things. Don't you dare say that Gtechture's fines work here sounds cheap. bah.
...maybe no-one else remembers this, but i remember when korg's m1 came out and it sounded WAY better than every other "synth" on the scene, but shit was it ever a preset machine. It changed the musical landscape big-time: all you'd ever hear was korg m1 all over the radio....everyone using the same presets. It made me want to barf. Truly, the microkorg is all cool, but just lacks in so many ways.
@evilsnakes1 it does sound worse than other cheap synths, the xiosynth, the microkorg, and the miniak all sound better. And why are you rambling about presets? synths are designed for synthesizing dumb ass. No wonder you favor the Micron, cause you're a bitch. and tell me people favor the micron more when so many more people have the microkorg and think about how many signed artists use the microkorg you think they never tried the micron?? gimme a break.
The alesis engine is much more powerful than the korg's, that is a fact. it suffers from poor presets, perhaps
quantity over quality, but anyone with a clue about sound design knows that the idea is to use presets as a beginning, not an end. and so quantity over quality is in fact a good thing. quality over quantity means that everyone uses the same presets and doesn't bother with sound design...and the simple fact is that the korg is much more limited...and i had xiosynth and sold it.
and like i said, do some actual research on the interwebs and you will see that more people agree with me than not. the korg has the cool factor, for sure, especially because of its included gooseneck mic, and while the vocoder is excellent, understand that MANY synths have great vocoders but micokorgs included/obvious/easy mic made it hip, which is why is is a success. but actual sound designers do not favor the microkorg over the micron, and that is what we are debating.
so my point about presets is, Korg's approach has ALWAYS been wonderful presets. people do a quick a/b, and get sold on korg (not that korg hasnt made some great "synths" over the years). the m1 analogy is something that happens time and time again. being that i'm in my 30's and you are in your teens, i recognize it, you don't. maybe you WANT a preset machine. shit, the entire rave scene was largely based off a single 303 sound. so, "hey, that's the microkorg". but sound design?
...i appreciate, seek out even, the wisdom and advice from people who have more experience than I do any any given matter. You seriously fault this? Having said that, I had a microkorg (non xl) on loan for two weeks and I know it well. I love its small keys and sounds great, but shit, son, like I said, it ain't up to much other than instant gratification noodling. The ion I have used on a prolonged session: it is hugely powerful considering the price, and the micron is better.
but I, like you, am a random fuck-tard youtuber. citing a review from soundonsound, again, one the THE BEST sources for solid reviews, simply lends credence to my side (you might want to read their less stellar reviews of the microkorgs as to why). Having said all this, I like the microkorg lots. always have. as far as a "pick up and play" synth goes, it is very hard to beat (although its knobs are dreadful). but at the end of the day, i'm more a sound designer than a noodler.
The micron is so awesome, infinate ways to make new sounds and sounds great. Great playing and why someone wouldnt want a micron after hearing this is beyond me
What would be really sweet is if you could do a sort of instructional video of how you set up a sound like this, what settings you used, etc. so us lesser mortals can follow in your footsteps. Because I've tried to get that kind of sound out of my Micron, and it seems right when I'm getting close, I lose it. Often there's a few similar settings I could tweak, and I'm not sure which to change. So my vids on my channel just use the factory setups, but I'd like to branch out into custom sounds.
@Gtechture Hey, you're right, but I must admit, it all is much clearer to me than the microKORG, gonna sell that one immediately!
I love this keyboard already, very nice to play with for a while.
The sounds don't come close to anything realistic like a normal piano, but I might try to make it sound like one some day. Oh btw also found some software for mac to make all settings on my computer and sysex them to the Micron.
Can't wait till I get the manual, much is clear to me already.
i was looking for this kind of progressive - vintage sounds but most of the videos in youtube about this synth and the microkorg are just about techno and stuff ...
wow, sounds really beautiful! this is my first comment on youtube ever, for 4 years!
oh man, do you have some myspace/project or band?) i'm in love with frequency modulation and now i fall in love with alesis micron and want to buy one <3
i turn on repeat this video because i like lyrical first part and magical rolls of thunder in second part of track... bells in outro is nice too!) just gorgeous minimalism... :'-]
(please god, excuse my english, i'm from russland! :DDD)
Man! Did you know the first bit sounds so similar to Boards of Canada?! Incredible! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if they used the Alesis Micron for some of their music! Hella propz dood! Hella props! :P
Hey, great vids, i have an important question. I´m between the microKorg or the Micron.. wich one would u recommend me??? Since i´m looking forward to use for industrial/electronic music.. Thanks!
Beautiful Video mate!! i was checking out MicroKorg, and Micron has 1 point on favor: 8 keys polyphony. What can you tell me about this nice instrument?
Also, i'm a bass player and i know absolutely NOTHING about synths but i'm planning on getting one!
I like to play things like Porcupine Tree, Opeth, Muse, Dream THeater (first chords you made at the beggining of the videos are perfect for creating that kind of chill vibe)
ive watched this video a few times and i think the sounds are excellent... very well done and the chords just match the style perfectly... its making me want to buy a micron
@alex927 Yes, I got it hooked on my tascam interface and it works perfectly in ableton, cubase and fl studio. But i have heard that many users had trouble hooking it up through MIDI. I first tried it with a simple USB 2 MIDI cable and it didn't work. But with the tascam i experienced no trouble at all.
I don't like the key action of this synth, but for anyone who is on a budget and wants the biggest bang for their buck, they should definitely check out this synth. Lots of features for a modest price.
this thing seems pretty ideal. you could do so much with it and its not too pricey. love how it looks too. seeing this makes my casio look a little bit... well... yeah. lol
Amazibg work! Very unique - you have great skills in both improvisation and sound design, much respect! Do you sell or otherwise make your great sounddesigns available to othes? I own a micron and eventhough I have been programing synths for 25 years I still find the micron hard to get to gribs with....:)
@nickybendix Try the shorcut function( press and hold "programs" and hit one of the keyboard keys on the right side marked with "voice", "osc" "premix", "filter" etc.) to access the parameters you want to tweak, it's relatively easy. Once you have familiarized yourself with the programming architecture of this little beast, it gets a whole lot easier.
@nickybendix addition: you can call up each oscillator and filter by pressing and holding "programs" and repeatedly hitting the respective key, once for oscillator 1, twice for no.2... that way you don't have to scroll through every subsection until you get to the desired oscillator or filter control. Mapping knobs and sliders is almost as easy: scroll to the parameter you want to assign to a knob/slider press and hold the master control scroll knob and move the knob you want to assign it to.
Fuck, this thing makes a microkorg look like a peice of garbage. Sounds great, but I just wish the design department at Alesis could've done a little more work. It looks like crap.
I just wish Alesis could have reached fiscal solvency on its own. :)
Plus, it was great of them to release a lovely editor for Mac or PC. Oh wait a minute, they didn't!
I'd much rather sysex shit to my microkorg than tweak knobs (though I actually rather like the eerily Moog-like knobs). Plus I can take the thing on the go with no power cord hassles (GREAT if using "keytar" case).
Typical Alesis: BAD ASS IDEA, HORRID FUCKING IMPLEMENTATION.
Yeah I agree w you there. The A6 woulda been great if it was implimented a lot better.. hard as heck to find one nowadays, buggy as hell, no support... if only things were as they should be.
My microkorg is collecting dust tho. My LP and Voyager pretty much stomped it out. I really wish Korg would bring out some products similar to the ones they did in the 70's and 80's. The MS20 and Mono/poly are wicked!
Korg's still got the "fun factor" down to a t. just look at the microkorg's on-board arpeggiator editor! If THAT doesn't entertain you... well... I dunno... play Atari or something.. but don't slam the thing! lol
Yeah I know what you're saying.. They're getting kind of stagnant... of course, the SV1 is coming shortly, if it isn't in stores already. That's pretty damn cool..
Or you mean like a Modular synth? That's my next step.. I'm done w screwing around with digital synths that are pretty much software in a pricy package. My Nord lead is my 1 exception, I've been really surprised with the sounds I've gotten out of it.
Modular is crazy. And addictive. And Pricy. But the control and potential for sounds you can make is frickin endless.
Well, I actually meant a full-size analog synth from Korg. Oh man, I know it would be awesome. Mind you, I'm not talking about the MS2000 series. I want a true analog beast.
can you get most of the same sounds out of the ion? because i am in love with a few really heavy sounds from this thing and i want an ion but i am not to sure.
@chadinterrupted Yes, because most of the sounds on the Micron are also on the Ion. Also, you can transfer your own custom patches between the Ion and Micron. Although personally, I would say you don't need to get an Ion if you have a Micron. They share exactly the same sound engine. Personally, I'd just get a MIDI keyboard with plenty of knobs, buttons and sliders that you can assign to adjust whatever parameters you want it to adjust. To be continued in a second comment...
@chadinterrupted Part 2: For instance, check out the M-Audio Axiom Pro keyboards, the M-Audio Oxygen keyboards, or other MIDI keyboards. If you get a "controller" keyboard like this, then your Micron becomes the sound engine, and you can use the "controller" keyboard's knobs, sliders and buttons to control everything the Micron does.
man.. wouldn't it be nice if alesis put out and additional control surface to plug into this thing that would give you the option of ion-esque tweaking?
Hi abur507. Thanks very much for your encouraging response. I'm definitely getting the micron as soon as I can swing it financially, which , judging by my current financial situation will be about 3000 years. :-) I wonder what music will be like in 3000 years if us wacky humans are even still around. Will there still be rock and roll? Will anyone then even have heard of the Beatles or Pink Floyd? I hope so!
Hi Ninja. I get what I was asking was how user friendly the Micron is. I'm a complete novice when it comes to synths and my keyboard skills on piano are rudimentary at best. All I want is to be able to access fun and cool sounds. From the research I've done, the Micron sounds relatively easy to use for a beginner. How true is this? Cheers, Nigel
Alright, so I just bought an Alesis Micron (About time, I've been lusting for one of these for a year and a half now), and anyways, I can't open till Christmas, and I was wondering if it came with a USB plugin or whatever, or if it's computer compatible. If anyone out there knows, that would be great if I could get an answer on that. Thanks.
The patch is really good, but the opening chord sequence is amazing too, and it works really well... Have to say I'm not so into all the mod wheel stuff, but the basic patch is incredibly well conceived... I'm going to try to emulate this using FM8. What do you think, can I get it right?
Oh, sorry. I didn't see that you had a tutorial video. If I get one of these eventually I'll be sure to just keep your advice in mind and read the manual.
I'd like to know the answer to what ZepperPerry said as well. Once you make a new (whatever you'd say -- instrument? voice?) can you save it to the synth or does it have to be hooked into the computer for it to work?
hi i would like to ask how easy it is to create complete new sounds on this synth (like what software is used)? i know nothing about synths and i hear amazing things about this one but the lack of controls on the panel makes me scared it may be hard to break away from the presets.
Sorry about the long comment. This video sounds ace, so beautiful.
It can be programmed easily if you have experience with synthesizers. No software is used to program the micron either. It does not have a lot of dedicated knobs and sliders but the interface is so good that you can program sounds almost as quickly as a synth with a lot of realtime controls.
Its not hard to learn how to use these things it takes time and effort to memorize the function of each parameter and the structure of each synth.
I can honestly say I am genuinely shocked and surprised that you were able to edit anything on that box, with its tiny little LCD and lack of editor library software.
having watched a shedload of alesis vids as I'm thinking about buying one....can I just say I thought the design of the sound and the playing were the best I've seen. You use this for innovation, not repitition. Thanks!
Dude, I believe this video alone convinced me to buy this keyboard. Screw guitar pedals!
Is there any possible way to post the guts of that program? If its too complex, then no biggie, but that is seriously the coolest sound I have heard come out of that machine yet.
i got one, too. Bought it after listening to this sound design. I am really happy with it and it is compared to the others quite cheap. I am into psychedelic/experimental/ambient stuff and it made a huge impact on my music. Thanks a lot Gtechture for the sound design. the other videos of this micron didn't impress me like yours.

Amazibg work! Very unique - you have great skills in both improvisation and sound design, much respect! Do you sell or otherwise make your great sounddesigns available to othes? I own a micron and eventhough I have been programing synths for 25 years I still find the micron hard to get to gribs with....:)
nickybendix 1 year ago
@nickybendix Try the shorcut function( press and hold "programs" and hit one of the keyboard keys on the right side marked with "voice", "osc" "premix", "filter" etc.) to access the parameters you want to tweak, it's relatively easy. Once you have familiarized yourself with the programming architecture of this little beast, it gets a whole lot easier.
dudewhosaysarrh 1 year ago

It looks like crap.
anoteoftruth 1 year ago
I think that it looks interesting. There is something in the design. I wouldn't change it.
sebastianpawlak 1 year ago
@anoteoftruth
ORUPRANKSTAZ 1 year ago
Yeah I agree w you there. The A6 woulda been great if it was implimented a lot better.. hard as heck to find one nowadays, buggy as hell, no support... if only things were as they should be.
My microkorg is collecting dust tho. My LP and Voyager pretty much stomped it out. I really wish Korg would bring out some products similar to the ones they did in the 70's and 80's. The MS20 and Mono/poly are wicked!
anoteoftruth 1 year ago
@anoteoftruth
I still want a hardcore FULL SIZE vintage synth
ORUPRANKSTAZ 1 year ago
You mean like a Voyager?
Or you mean like a Modular synth? That's my next step.. I'm done w screwing around with digital synths that are pretty much software in a pricy package. My Nord lead is my 1 exception, I've been really surprised with the sounds I've gotten out of it.
Modular is crazy. And addictive. And Pricy. But the control and potential for sounds you can make is frickin endless.
anoteoftruth 1 year ago
@anoteoftruth
Well, I actually meant a full-size analog synth from Korg. Oh man, I know it would be awesome. Mind you, I'm not talking about the MS2000 series. I want a true analog beast.
But yeah..

Thompsongs 1 year ago
can you get most of the same sounds out of the ion? because i am in love with a few really heavy sounds from this thing and i want an ion but i am not to sure.
chadinterrupted 1 year ago
@chadinterrupted Yes, because most of the sounds on the Micron are also on the Ion. Also, you can transfer your own custom patches between the Ion and Micron. Although personally, I would say you don't need to get an Ion if you have a Micron. They share exactly the same sound engine. Personally, I'd just get a MIDI keyboard with plenty of knobs, buttons and sliders that you can assign to adjust whatever parameters you want it to adjust. To be continued in a second comment...
Thompsongs 1 year ago
@chadinterrupted Part 2: For instance, check out the M-Audio Axiom Pro keyboards, the M-Audio Oxygen keyboards, or other MIDI keyboards. If you get a "controller" keyboard like this, then your Micron becomes the sound engine, and you can use the "controller" keyboard's knobs, sliders and buttons to control everything the Micron does.

I hope so!
Nigelxman 2 years ago
do YOU know artists from 3000 years ago?! XD
hanfbrot 2 years ago 4

@Nigelxman the micron is great for beginners, i bought one myself for those same reasons. its got some pretty crazy capabilities too

Alright, so I just bought an Alesis Micron (About time, I've been lusting for one of these for a year and a half now), and anyways, I can't open till Christmas, and I was wondering if it came with a USB plugin or whatever, or if it's computer compatible. hi i would like to ask how easy it is to create complete new sounds on this synth (like what software is used)? i know nothing about synths and i hear amazing things about this one but the lack of controls on the panel makes me scared it may be hard to break away from the presets.
Sorry about the long comment. This video sounds ace, so beautiful.
cheers
ZepperPerry 2 years ago
Hi,
It can be programmed easily if you have experience with synthesizers.
Gtechture 2 years ago
@Gtechture how do u create the synths? is it with the micron itself?
divadro102 1 year ago
