In the USA weapons used in crime are destroyed also regardless of if they are in bad shape or not. I think its a waste, when citys can't balance there book they pay to discard good firearms

Given the choice... I'd take the HK91 over either the AK or the AR series rifles. But I'd still take the AK over the AR any day, because I don't want to have it foul and jam half way through a firefight. As for Soviet weapons in Africa, quite a few of them came in after the fall of the wall when Russia determined the AKM obsolete and started production of the AK74 (5.45 instead of 7.62). Maadi of Egypt bought most, if not all, of the old AKM equipment that was sold and produced their own AKs.

Special forces in SA are not allowed to use AK47's any more. Was a period in the 90's when there was accusations of a "3rd force" instigating violence in black areas. Security forces were suspected. So there is a ballistics issue in investigating crimes. Also most of the weapons will be sub standard knock-offs.

@bbiiggjjoo because every weapon needs to be individually registered with a ballistic report, and serial numbers and this would cost a lot of money to make these weapons 'legal". Especially if they were grey (ie stolen from another country's army) add the cost of transporting them, guarding them and storing them.

Plus these are mostly heavy urban assault weapons (designed for damaging buildings and vehicles) the police have little use for these kind of weapons in normal operations.

Inaccurate compared to what? My AK's shoot very well, most of the shortcomings of the platform can be attributed to the sights, but mechanically they are quite accurate.

And I stood there with an AK at 100 yards and out shot 5 guys with AR-15s, hitting 10 inch metal plates.

It is true that in good hands an AR-15 is more accurate, but...also true that in good hands, an AK-47 is accurate enough.
