A song by Suzanne Vega brilliantly written and brilliantly poignant, and though Kasey would no doubt understand the song, she's completely annihilated the message. The blind man... fine, he's metaphoric of people choosing to not see, etc, but it's such a rubbish, done to death bit of imagery. Kasey this is a great STORY by a great STORYWRITER... but it's become a 1995 Ginblossoms clip instead. Great song, sung well, slaughtered in the video.
Love Kasey, but this video is sooo stupid and distracting....what's with the blind dude? haha, and when does his father start hitting him, or is that all implied to be the past...so esoteric. Ooh. I kid, it's just dumb.
@johnbonnell I believe the blind man is more a symbolism of those who sort of merely see but do nothing about abusive cases whether it's because they can't or because they choose not too. The kids toys are most likely more the evidence of something has happened so the blind man touching this is actually sort of "seeing" this evidence yet he's not (in his case it's cause he actually CAN'T see it) but in most everyday circumstances it's because "we" choose NOT to. If that makes sense?
@illusionsfan1 Obviously this is only my interpretation I could be entirely wrong but I believe he's not actually "Luka" (which I assume is how you've interpreted the clip)
I loved this cover even though I had never heard the original, I think that Kasey was great as usual and I understand that everyone has their own opinions so I won't say too much in regards to the comments stating that Kasey looked uncomfortable singing this song, well she has been through abuse before as stated in her autobiography. Love you Kasey :)
@katewinslet1912 you should check her hubby out he could also sing the phonebook.... I dunno who I'm more jealous of.... maybe the kids.... and Kasey and Shane to sing me to sleep every night... I'd die happy haha
I did not cry in Suzanne Vega's version, but I did in yours. One of the problems with Vega's recording is that it is fascinating more than evocative. The mix of the haunting lyrics (harder to understand) with the melody made Luka a great song! However, most people hear the melody and beat and are happy! However, here, the clarity is more burning. I was abused and when it reached, "you don't argue anymore," I broke into sobs! You added something people don't want in this song: the lyrics count!
Couldn't finish this song :/ I loved her back in the day when she did The Captain and Barricades and Brick Walls but I think after Wayward Angel her music started going downhill. She looks awkward/uncomfortable in this clip though doesn't she
I've been following Kasey since The Captain and Shes still going strong. One of my fav songs and I'm glad you did it Kasey, displayed more of the sadness of the lyrics. Brilliant job!!
I haven't heard this song until now. After this, I listened to the original. I like both versions. The message is so, so sad. It definitely needs to be heard by everyone out there.
I like it. I know some people have issues with covers but this song deserves a cover because of its message. New generations have may have never even heard of Suzanne Vega or the original. Hopefully new exposure to the song will help spread the message of violence and Vega's music in general.
Ugh, a beautiful song, totally butchered.

@illusionsfan1 I think that gives them too much credit. I wouldn't presume to read that much into it.

I think this would have been okay as an album track. Not really single material. Just seems a little off the mark.

This hasn't added anything to the original song. Phrasing and accent almost the same. Money grab? I hope not.

Cant say i am a fan of this version. The arrangement is too similar to the original and because it is a personal song i think it should be different.
I also prefer Suzannes timid approach to singing for this. I always thought that was what Luka would sound like.

Some songs are better left untouched, Luka is one of them. Perfection can't be improved.
