  • Thanks

  • Love the poker face x)

  • Hey, is this the same chord structure as With or Without You? and Don't Stop Believin'? and the first part of the progression on the verse of Let it Be? and I'm Yours? and You're Beautiful? and Forever Young? and Can You Feel the Love Tonight? and Amazing? and Under the Bridge? and Waltzing Matilda? and Barbie Girl? and Kids? and Torn? and Canvas Bags? and Birdplane? and Africa?

'Cause it sounds like it is...

  • donkay!

  • Como?? repiite porfavor

  • whats the difference between the passive and the active bass?

  • @MrNorbi14

Active : Uses a battery to get a strong sound, great attack (metalic and active sound, for slap, as example)

Passive : Doesn't use a battery, classic sound (plastic sound).

Pros about active : great sound, less vibration

Pros about passive : no battery to care about

If i'm wrong, i hope someone will correct me

  • What amp/mic or whatever are you using? Lovely sound from that J bass..

  • with or without u ha!ha! u2 ;-)

  • Dave I like how you are cool and clear,so eloquent and self-sure...thats good for us all who want to learn.I'm into Reggae but I like different technics as well. Thanks for you time and willingness. I like your specifying mode...?finger,?Fret,?String. God Bless.

  • Great tone! What is your setup for this video?

  • Sting used a fretless bass on this song.

  • in german we call this notes "vorschlag" witch means "vor" = before, infront of and "schlag" = hit (or in this context note). it gets the sense of what its vor quite well, right?

anticipation means something else, if we compare it to the psychological dimension, right?

anyway i love your lessons and i hope you will do a lot of more.

  • Great I like it!!!! THKS

  • Your lessons are great, like a real teacher , rather than some egotistical freak.

    thanks

  • thank you so much!!

  • are you the dude from u2?

  • hey ... i speak spanih ......congratulations for your job ....... i need ..lesson : manuel santillan for los fabulosos cadillacs ..

  • Thank very much Dave, it´s help me a lot, I´m a new bass player!

  • THanks

  • is that a pantera picture in the backround?

  • Metallica picture i think

  • both

  • What kind of strings are you using?

    They sound beatiful.

Id like to get myself a set.

  • is that a northern ireland accent i hear?

  • what amp are you using?

  • it's not necessary to have his exact amp. just mind the bass, middle and treble :P

  • its a good lesson but he doesn't go into the choruses after the guitar solo where sting goes a bit mental with octaves and even more anticipation notes, he's only covered the easy bit really, maybe that was his intention tho i dunno???

  • the U2 song "Without or Without You" uses the same chord progression with the same bass line as the chorus. Except, in D Major.

  • very good video for me, new bass player

  • 0:02 - 0:06 what is he saying?

  • pro bass player? waste of time !!!

  • Nice Metallica poster ha

  • lok at his face at 1:11 to 1:16

  • i think hes thinking... "jesus this shits boring"

  • You look pretty miserable playing that bass line. I know you enjoy it but yea. I dig the lessons.

  • lol

  • L@@ks like a Marcus Miller signature Fender jazz to me...

  • Fender Jazz Bass I'm 100% sure

  • Is that a gibzon bass?

  • Dumb ass...

  • is that a peavey marcus miller bass?

  • Fender Jazz bass, if I read the letters on the head right...

  • How in the hell did you come up with that assumption?

  • Nice lesson and I agree that Sting's bass lines are interesting.

  • You are a great teacher :) Not a hard song to play, but you do it, so its possible for new bassplayers to understand :) Cheers

  • do u have a vid for nulls on parade, if u dont coould u make one plaease. Your doing a great job teaching!!

  • excelente !!!

  • A nice persona, I hope you teach many people as they will benefit from your relaxed east approach.

  • good teacher!

  • Nice...simple straight forward and as far as I can see it, right on the money.

    Thanks a lot !!!!

  • you are exceptional !

    thx

  • Thanx mate very well done!

  • Excellent!

Can I suggest, though, that the left hand positions be videographed from the PLAYER'S perspective, that is, above the fretboard, looking down at it? Never seen any bass lessons do this, but that's the way you see it as you play...

  • Could you make a "Hearthshaped-box"bass lesson??

Please I would be very happy

  • Oh btw thought i'd just say aswell, this is a great lesson and Thought you did a great job :) Nice simple yet great songs like this are why i just bought a bass to play alongside my guitars (or should that be butcher, every guitar player thinks themselves a bassist!)

  • ive been learning musical theory for about 5 years, and im pretty sure what you call an "anticipation" is an "anacrusis" even though thats probably not the correct spelling :P

  • Rhythmically, you are correct, but I'm using the term anticipation also to describe the fact that he uses a specific interval ( a semitone below) each time to lead into every chord. That way, when we hear the first note, we can anticipate what the chord will be...

  • ah i see now thanks for the clarification

  • @mrpeanut25 rofl way to be a smart ass

  • Could you do message in a bottle bassline?

  • STOP STARING AT ME

  • lol xd

  • Is that a carlorobelli bass?

  • Hey dave marks, doesn't the with or without you bass line by U2's adam clayton sound very much like the so lonely bass line? are those two the same lines?

  • you're right...they're very similar...but not equal....

  • Well spotted - they have the same chord movement. However, i felt that the rhythm and the techniques were different enough to learn a lot from both.

  • Also same as "no woman no cry" by bob marley, sting was influenced by him at the time

  • Many songs share this Chord Progression, If I remember Rightly Let it Be has the same Chords. Shows how the Same 4 chords can make many great songs.

  • So true...

there are so many songs with this progression, in this key or in D.

  • nice lesson, & I like your sound.

  • thanks a ton, man!!

  • hey, thanks alot. i have song almost perfect now. i love your basses tone as well.

  • Good stuff - glad to be a help...

  • hi dave - i have a question for you. are so lonely, CSLY, and roxanne all a play on exactly the same line?

  • well, explained like a pro, but the bass line isnt really.. nice face youre pulling there in the middle though ;):P

  • omg i love ur accent x.x

  • lol thanks for this dave. i learnt this years ago but i always got the anticipation wrong coz i was leading into it with a whole tone not semi tone lol. Its funny how you stick with things you learn from years back

  • Great project...

I!m sure I'll check your 'tubes' often ...

  • the anticipation is a basis of jazz walks. sting knows about it...

    anyway.

dude. what kinda bass is that?

looks like a white marcus miller?

  • It certainly is a white Marcus...

  • Thankfully the *real* Marcus Miller is black ;)

  • thanks for all your lessons, theyre very useful at least for me.. if is not to much to ask could you make a lesson about any floyd song?, i want to check out if im playing them the proper way :)

  • Thank you!

  • Dave - Thanks for the lesson! Explained very well.

  • Ok for the main part...but what about the rest of the song?

  • These lessons are meant to give you the building blocks of the song, to get you into it - the rest is up to you. You should use our ears and work out some of the other parts of the song - it's very simple and uses the same kind of chord progression all the way through (although it moves up 2 frets / 1 Tone / from C major to D Major at the guitar solo).

  • It's important as a student that you do not become too complacent & expect everything to be explained to you - everyone has the potential to work out songs - it's tricky at first but you need to work at it..

  • man, i thought i had this one figured out... i had it totally wrong... damn

  • That is a great sounding rig.

  • Hey Dude!

Thx alot for your video! It's great! I like it and it helped me a lot! Before I had found your video I was really desperate because I didn't find sheet music for the song...

    So thanks!

    Rock on!

  • nice lessons mate well done nice bass to

  • Your lessons are very good ! thank you ! it helps !

    Vértes ANdrás- Hungary
