My great uncle Grant P. O'Neill from 262nd Infantry Regiment, 66th Infantry Division of Pawcatuck, CT was aboard the Leopoldville. I was told his body was never recovered.
My father, Ranson Russell Toler, was in the panther division. However, my siblings and I do not believe he was on the Leopoldville. Does anyone have any info on another ship that may have been carrying some of the 66th on? My father passed in 1975 and never spoke of this.
@audijunkie3000 My uncle SSGT Carl J. Walz Jr. , 264th, Co. I, drowned in the freezing water after the sinking of the Leopoldville. He's buried at Colleville Sur-Mer in Normandy. I'd really like to get e-mail addresses of other survivors or relatives.
@pamf319 My Dad's brother John H. O'Donnell died in the freezing water also. My Dad knows quite a bit about it. He has been to several SS Leopoldville Reunions. He has talked to some of the survivors. I bought him several of the books that Alan Andrade published.
amazing footage. my great grandfather was a survior and saved men from the sinking ship. he was 262nd division. im lucky to have met him. he was truely a great man, and i will never forget him.
My father was a survivor of this ship sinking. He also said that the distress calls were sent, but no one answered due to the Christmas Eve celebrations. He also said that the Belgian crew abondoned ship before the servicemen.
Not entirely true; the captain and some other crew members went down with the ship. But some others and almost all Congolese crew members packed all their personal belongings and fled with more lifeboats than they needed, leaving the passengers behind....
thats a lie bertrandsciboz, the captain did send distress calls, but they werent answered because everyone was at christmas parties. i know this because my great uncle was on that ship
@ryderx3x3 my grat uncle was on that ship too...but didn't survive. nice to know they tried...Lost are only those, who abandon themselves) Hans-Ulrich Rudel.

My Uncle Corporal Reginald J Clark 66th Infantry died on that ship.
It shouldn't continue to be looted.

800 men died and are interred here. I guess it asking to much of these divers to respect that and live this site alone.
They are desecrating a war grave.

@Bronco46tube
You're absolutely right!!!!!!
Unfortunately, as far as I know, the ship isn't officially declared a war grave, so these disrespectful divers will carry on.....
