Really great overlooked tune! This was when Johnny first signed with Mercury after all those years with Columbia Records. I had the cassette of this album back in the day, I'm thinking around 1986. Anybody know how high this single reached on the charts? Thanks for posting this one.
@DomenicDee This single reached #43 on the country charts. It was the only single released from the album "Johnny Cash Is Coming To Town". The album was released in April of 1987 and reached #36 on the charts. I too had the cassette back in the day and I now have it on CD.
SUPERBWON HAS NO IDEA WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT. OK LETS START THE LIST-LEFTY FRIZZEL-HANK SNOW-CARL SMITH-EDDIE ARNOLD-THE CARTER FAMILY- ROY ACUFF -ERNEST TUBB-JIMMY WAKLEY-SLIM WITHMAN-JIMMY DAVIS-JIMMY DICKENS-RAY PRICE-AND MANY MORE I CANT REMEMBER. AND NONE OF THEM WAS BLUEGRASS. BILL MONROE WAS THE BEST OF BLUE GRASS.
cbdesade, Your not considering the competition Hank had, very few. Country was new most music was bluegrass. If Hank was here today writing most of his songs would not be hits. Back then you could write a song about a woman crying over an onion and it would be a hit. Folks were tired of blugrass and country offered a new sound. A God? Nope just good timing. Like todays country rock sound. 25yrs ago the old "true country" singers were ran out of nashville for a new sound. Now country SUCKS!
What you are saying is right but on the other side there has never have been a Hank Williams SNR again, and people are still the same so somewhere many people must like Hank Williams, but very few person actually know him. And there is no doubt he is a God, so don´t make a discussion of that it´s your opinion and it´s wrong to make from your opinion a fact.
@moominpic Yes he was. I believe he was the drummer. He lost a coin toss for the plane seat to the Big Bopper. And that was the night the plane went down, and WJ was the lone survivor because he had to take the bus instead of the plane.
@basenjib123 doesn't it occur to you that by playing to them he may have given some of them inspiration to make something of themselves... I believe one such person was Merle Haggard.
He is the king of country but Hank Williams snr is the lord of country! no doubt! but I love them both. It says enough that Alan Jackson Johnny Cash George strait all sung about him The great Hank williams snr!!!!!!
I love Lucy debuted Oct 15 1951. Hank Williams had not yet written Jambalaya or Your Cheatin' Heart. He could not have been singing them in public at that time.
Johnny Cash may be a "legend" or "icon," but Hank Williams is a god of music. In his brief life the man wrote about 1000 songs, many of them masterpieces. That's creative genius, which is rare and unequaled.
@cbdesade To start with, "Johnny Cash may be a "legend" or "icon," is an insult to the legend and the man considering you looked up his song. This man is singing about one of his idols and you post something that is rather negative towards Johnny Cash. I would agree that Hank Williams is an absolute terrific artist, but to compare him to Johnny cash is apples and oranges. They are equally great in their time frames.
@xmb152 he's one of the best country singers ever in our time as well, a lot of new country artists only sing about love, or only sing for the money, this was real country music, jank williams would roll over in his grave if he seen what was happening to country music today!
Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings doing a song about Hank Williams - how much more country can you get? :P

this is a fine folk song, giving us a slice of american life in the 1950s and a sense of the bigness of Hank who was a precursor to Elvis.

@sumerixt Waylon was the bass player. He gave up his seat because the Bopper was ill and didn't feel like taking the longer bus ride.

@ Wreckless....I believe Cash would draw the larger crowd by far, however, I also believe that Hank WiIliams was light years ahead of Cash in talent.

There is no competition in music. I bet the both draw big crowds where ever they are now and neither of them too big to back the other up.

Johnny Cash is greater than Hank Williams, Sure Hank is a hero of his time but Johnny is a God, and he always will be.
