Every time I see something like at 1:07, I think about Don Ottavio's poor ears as she's totally pounding those notes out right in his face. :D Ha! Love it!
I heard Sintow sing Ann in the late 70's in Salzburg. She wasn't all that impressive as Anna. Her voice was not yet big, it was a sensitive and elegant portrayal but in the 80's, her voice became larger and darker with a dramatic power. She sang Tosca with great success. Her Ana in the 80's was far more exciting. This is a terrific portrayal. I also really love Edda Moser and Carol Vaness. Excellent dark and intense sopranos
The comment about the vibrato is absurd. It's a large, warm, vibrant voice which is brilliantly and naturally produced. Comparisons with Nilsson's voice are not helpful.
Far from being absurd, my comments about the vibrato are, unfortunately accurate. It's difficult to work out on the high notes which note is being sung. Vibrato is used by singers to increase projection, tone and sometime, to disguise inaccurate pitch. Some listeners find it attractive but I do not usually and certainly not in Mozart. It is a matter of opinion
Brava Anna! this one of the toughest arias to pull off - so many twists and turns to show off a singer's weakness - she dominates them all and all with feminine wile.

Heard her a lot in the 1970's and 1980's at the Met. She was OK in some roles with a lot of loud singing and no coloratura. She's constantly behind the beat, and in general sloppy about rhythm. Totally miscast here, verismo Mozart. If I were to listen to this performance without the orchestra, I'm not sure I would even recogize the melody. I like big voices, but a Donna Anna needs to be able to approximate what Mozart wrote better than this.
I'm not at all familiar with Anna Tomowa-Sintow other than her portrayal of Donna Anna, and yet I have say I have never heard a voice more suited to the role than hers. For me she is Donna Anna and Mozart might as well have written the part just for her voice.
i so totally agree with you. Tomowa-Sintow's Donna Anna was the second i'd heard after Vaness' and i love them both because their individual timbres and temperaments are ideally suited to this role and aria. the vocal heft and fiery tone released capture's Donna Anna's emotion perfectly. i love big, powerful, agile soprano voices!!!
I know I know... stylistically one can judge this or that...
but it is so refreshing sometimes to go to a live performance and get a big voiced soprano who goes for flesh and blood and have this blasting operatic experience that I am missing more and more in today's opera of "small-quality-voices" and "Regie Theater"...
It is interesting how on longer notes she has a beautiful spinto quality of sound,in piano or in forte, but sometimes on same high pitches on shorter values, she gets a strange fast vibrato Thank you for posting !
I too prefer Vaness more, but that doesn't mean this woman is screaming. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is a phenomenal singer with a BLASTER of voice. She's not really screaming so much as she just has an ENORMOUS voice. That said, I prefer Vaness (stylistically) in Mozart to almost anyone.
to add, Bigger voices don't record well. An engineer told me that is is easier to record smaller voices because of the balance of the mics and acoustics. with bigger voices it is hard to get all of the overtones. Leontyne, Jessye, and Ms. Anna are best heard live!
Did you read the words? This woman is pissed off! She's not supposed to sing it like a lullaby. She's freaking amazing! Perfect! She's got that angry bite in her voice. Really stunning for this piece! BRAVA. I really couldn't have imagined it any better. It's so satisfying to listen to!
I know every word of Don Giovanni and I understand them very well, after all I am Italian.I don't change opinion, tastes differ and mine is different from yours.
Anna Divina. I've adored this woman from the very first time I heard her singing the impossible Ernani involami flawlessly at the MET Centennial Gala in 83. I was blown away by her Chicago Trovatore as well. Marvelous.
this woman is phenomenal in every every way as a musician, singer, actress. She's got everything. MOst importantly, this kind of voice doesn't exist anymore. Sigh.
Wow ! Brilliant singing of a treacherous aria. Plus, look at the gorgeous sets and costumes. I think they went to studio not long after this to record the opera. I have the highlights CD on Deutsche Grammophon. The Elvira is Agnes Baltsa (wonderful) and the Don Ottavio is Gosta Winberg, I think, and he's a lovely Mozart singer. Thanks for posting this. I'm going to find a copy.
Elvira on this DVD is Julia Varady. She must have been having a bad day when it was recorded because I find her less than impressive. One way or another I don't have the DVD anymore, so I can't post anymore.
I just bought it today so Its not a big loss! I actually find her Elvira to be one of the best! I guess we have different tastes! Who do you like as Elvira?
Schwarzkopf is always a favourite of mine, but I also like Lisa Della Casa. Kiri sang it with her absolutely beautiful voice, but I never found her fury quite as believable. On the other side of the token, Sena Jurinac recorded an incredibly passionate Elvira, but unfortunately, the musicianship is a little sloppy.
This aria holds no terrors for this woman.

She does the most gut wrenching, wrath spilling rendition. I think the others are too light.

The vibrato in this is wide enough to drive a truck through - squally and unpleasant. Nilsson sings with greater purity and drama.
