  • Please make a video on how to check proper operation that a defrost cycle does work when doing a PM visit. I forgot myself and need a refresher course that I know you can provide. Thanks. HVAC contractor in Charleston SC.

  • Your just looking for a fight huh guy? The technical term for the two types of heat pumps are non-conventional and conventional which tells you the position of the valve with power off. When you work in the field your not always working on brand new equipment, you run across a little bit of everything, new and old, so you better know how to work on both.

  • when you say heating active and cooling active I am assuming you mean conventional and non-conventional heat pumps.

  • @RhodesHVACR what are you talking about most manufactures trane, lennox and carrier energize the revesing valve in cooling so if the valve sticks or siezies they will still have heat. energizes o terminal, rheem Rudd weather king energize the reversing vale in heat, b terminal

  • Dr Z its not a perfect world must have been on a friday or a monday. lol nice to give us the scoop

  • well i checked the continuity thru the coil on the contactor and i get a definite amt of resistance- but if i check the voltage thru the coil and i get a reading of controll voltage then the contactor is bad even though i get a reading of sum resistance?

  • @crownvvc4 Unless you have a replacement contactor coil you'll need to just replace the entire contactor.

  • thanx for the help guys, really preciate it- the outdoor fan nor the compressor will cut on- there is a lil bit of a hum coming from the contactor- when the call for heat comes in the contactor closes but niether the fan nor compressor kicks in- the stat is not set on emergency or aux heat- the contactor is good-both outdoor tstats are good-im only in my 2nd semester of tech school and have not takin a heat pump course yet so im a bit weak in this area-how do i know if it is locked out?

  • @crownvvc4 The hum from the contactor means that the coil is getting voltage. Check the voltage at the contactor coil to see if you're getting the proper amount of control volts. The contactor is bad if you are.

  • dr z my heat pump seems to run all the time- my outdoor fan doesnt come on- but im getting heat- i suppose its heating off my heat strips-ill notice when my power bill comes in- any ideas?

  • @crownvvc4 You might have a bad outdoor fan motor if the compressor is running at the time. Also, check your thermostat to see if you have it set in emergency heat. That would make the system use the heat strips.

  • @crownvvc4 Is the compressor running? - Do you hear any noise coming from the outdoor unit because the fan will stop during the defrost cycle. No defrost cycle should last more than 10 minutes max. Either the outdoor unit is locked out by an outdoor stat / balance point control or your on emergency heat if the outdoor unit isn't running at all. If you hear the compressor running with no fan all the time then the defrost control is bad or the fan motor is bad.

Heat strips will be on anyways.

  • haha, backwards reversing valve..... rookie shit

  • @hvacbuck lol

  • @hvacbuck It's a mistake but I wouldn't say it is a rookie mistake. It would make you kick yourself. DrZ's solution wasn't amateurish. Just saying that we all make mistakes it's just the frequency and severity that makes the difference.

In 20 years of service work I have probably seen @ 5 bad reversing valves. Something you don't do everyday.

  • @tstatech i hear ya... and reversing valves are a pain in the ass in the first place. that being said, i appreciate him showing how to fix the problem w/ a simple relay. way better than starting over. i didnt mean to offend, more just quoting what my boss said to me when i did my first rv. dr z you the man, i still have 100% confidence.

  • Great job.

    Marry christmas Dr.z

  • @RockinGuy1994 Thanks Merry Christmas

  • Great job.

    Marry christmas Dr.z

  • Impressive!, good job Dr'z!

  • @Aussie50 Thanks

  • well done :D

  • @mechanicwarrior20 Thanks.

  • smart fix. good job.

  • @V8Jagnut Thanks. It's easier than the alternative.

  • Good save. Lots easier to invert the control signal than to invert the reversing valve.

  • @tstatech Thanks. That's for sure.

  • cool vid dr Z

    Ken G

  • @ken6675 Thanks
