ill agree with the guy below me. i just got this amp like a month ago i love it too, cuz i had to sell my old gear a few years ago and im just getting back into it and im able to replicate my old sound.............BUT i wouldnt title it a METAL amp ( depending on your definition of real metal) But its great for me, and can pull off some wicked stuff, im still happy i bought it
I have this amp and I fuckn love it, but this is not a metal amp. It doesn't have enough gain. 333xl and 6262 are THE metal amps of bugera and they're not that much more expensive. Still, this amp can pull of some old school thrash tones and some more extreme metal tones with a good distortion/overdrive pedal in it, but this amp it's more for classic rock, hard rock, blues... Oh! And its awesome for punk also!
I have a 1990 too and I just picked up a Kasha Quikmod and hooked it up to it.Now it sounds every bit as good as my buddy's Marshall jcm800 Kerry King signature amp.The quikmod is a small unit that looks like a mini tube amp,but it only has 2 12ax7 tubes and a cord that resembles the end of a 12ax7 tube. You remove one of the preamp tubes from your amp and plug the cord into the tube socket and it activates the 2 tubes in the quikmod which gives your amp an extra preamp tube instantly.
If you want the gnarliest of cheap metal get the Bugera 333, 6262, or 6260. But honestly the 4 pre's in this sound just as good. But those other models have slightly more gain. But I don't think you'll want any more gain lest you get mud.
@oliien Its a real fucking nice amp. The lead channel has up to 22 in gain... but that doesnt really mean much, its just numbers. But anyhow I think it is a real versatile and a real solid inversion. and hell its only $450!!!
I have this amp with a metal zone and a metal muff in front of it. I prefer the metal zone though. I dont think the 1990 has enough gain by itself. Btw try to get more crisp on the playing. Was a lil sloppy there... =)
are u running this amp at 60 watts because of ur 2x12 or is it full blast 120 watts? im thinkin about whether or not to go all out with a 4x12 but that might be a bit too loud...
\m/(-_-)\m/ you're so metal.

This head would be more of a megadeth/thrash metal music sound not really for heavy metal. 6262 or the 333xl would be best for lower tuned metal.

Poor harmonics, and too crunchy lead. This amp is great, but not for metal or extreme styles.

What cabinet are you playing that through?
