as a skier i have so much respect for jones... i know that it is harder to ride big mountain on a board and he routinely makes absurdly hard lines look easy... no one, and i mean no one is better at riding spines on a board than jones is...
@REXAKAMOOSE Actually you are wrong BOARDES can do sicker lines as they can hold an ICE AXE while they shred. Trust me steeper lines favour boarders because of the ice axe FACTOR.
@IveGotTheNuts Gotta disagree buddy. Ice axes are only relevant on wind swept icy faces and yes you're right they let you arrest your fall, but in deep powder or anything technical they do little to help and are more likely to cause accidental impalement than be of use. How many big mountain lines are done while holding ice axes? only a few
actually you are wrong and I ll explain. Any technical line IE over 55 DEGREES will not hold powder very well. In fact very technical steep lines over 60 degrees will not hold any snow. Powder only sticks to slopes under 48 degrees.. As for impalement sure it is possible but not very likely if you are in SELF arrest as your ice pick will be in the snow. How many big mountain lines are done holding ICE AXE many. Actually only the most technical lines can only be done with an ICE AXE.
@IveGotTheNuts Good comments nuts, but I still know of very few riders or skiers that ride with an axe. Watching the teton gravity movies, which imo have always been the cutting edge of big mountain, and a lot of jones' parts over the last 10 years, not many big mountain pros seems to routinely ride with them either. I've never encountered a face so steep that it only retained ice- usually if they can't hold powder then the underlying rock is exposed and they are unrideable anyway.
@shredcity Np guy but heres a quote form Jones snowboard at fantasy anartica fantasy lines. "Xavier and I rode the chute in the middle of the face. The snow was great allowing us for a rare opportunity to ride a line with out axes. This was the only slope we tested the the pitch of. It was measured 52 degrees." trust me man anything over 55 degrees most peeps have an axe on hand. Look Chamonix and you will lines beeing done that can only be done with AXE.
@shredcity Hey man look up signature line by Jones . he states in it, that he snowboards threw the crux of a sick line with ice axe in Hand. Further proving that he rides the most technical lines with one in hand . Heres the quote you can find on his facebook page. "Coming into the diagonal ramp there was no room for error. Ice axe in hand I made it through the crux. Riding out the bottom, the stars aliggned , i was thrilled that the line came together." Trust me it is true.
Not his attitude towards competitions and how much of a sellout he has become, but he is a really good boarder. I just hate how he is so kind of "competition only" attitude and "gold medal" this and "gold medal" that... Like the only thing to being a snowboarder is getting rich and winning gold medals!
I can't do switch backflip 900's 20 feet in the air, I also don't have a room full of medals and trophies, but I still have fun!
Climbing up a mountain you're gonna board down is so much cooler than being dropped by a helicopter. It's more fun going up and more fun going down. Respect.
Loved this!

Epic. This movie will be the greatest contribution to mountain films ever. It represents every reason why I got into splitboarding.
