It's a lot easier to go out on a limb when 0.) you're on late, and 1.) you haven't yet done so well late that the time is worth a lot to the network. Broadcast non-public TV is in the business of selling the audience to advertisers, and Letterman became successful enough that the incentives to clamp down on his essential oddness became, unfortunately, greater.
I often don't find Craig Ferguson funny, but I can appreciate what seems to be a real 'not giving a hang about anything' attitude.
I remember watching this as a teenager, and laughing so loud I was afraid I'd wake my parents. I was nearly in tears. Great stuff ... I miss Classic Dave! New Dave, well ...
This was extremely funny, makes me miss the Old Letterman, the Letterman that went out on a limb, the pre-heart attack Letterman. I think you can see a big change in him since that. Conan is still as crazy, but doesn't seem Letterman will just say the hell with our sponsors, I'm gonna be zany again!

She is so lovely. Where is she now?

I saw it live. Great stuff, totally silly and pointless. And of course Jane Pauley was/is such a cutie, and Letterman showed that he was smitten.
