It's a lot easier to go out on a limb when 0.) you're on late, and 1.) you haven't yet done so well late that the time is worth a lot to the network. Broadcast non-public TV is in the business of selling the audience to advertisers, and Letterman became successful enough that the incentives to clamp down on his essential oddness became, unfortunately, greater.

I often don't find Craig Ferguson funny, but I can appreciate what seems to be a real 'not giving a hang about anything' attitude.

This was extremely funny, makes me miss the Old Letterman, the Letterman that went out on a limb, the pre-heart attack Letterman. I think you can see a big change in him since that.
