  • I'm a big catpower fan. Her early stuff is really genius. Wow, and she said she was always drunk in her interview. Raw emotion and power.

  • can someone tell me is that andrew stockdale of wolfmother playing the other guitar?

they look exactly the same heheheh...

and they both play gibson sg

  • i love her. the quality of this video really gives me a feel of it. it just suits her so well..

  • @dinunclv hi... are you deaf. there is an art in what she does. its pure emotion. to be able to convey that is a gift in itself. but her voice. oh my god her voice.

  • Chan, please! bring back the guitar.

  • If you download this video you can compress the sound a bit with the "audacity" .

Many thanks to uploader, this is a priceless gem.

  • this is wondrous. I'd kill to have half of her talent.

  • @KaitlynHooligun I don't see that much talent here

  • @dinunclv who the fuck are you?

  • im actually in love

  • this could probably make me cry

  • marry me

  • best looking thing i've ever seen with a guitar.

  • My favorite Cat Power song...soothing when I'm blue

  • CHANGES shit! and the fact that people can.

  • i could listen to this forever.

  • Cool; voice

but the band is a noise

  • chan, what an usual name.....i love her covers album with new york new york....is this place really called bottom of the hill?

  • Coisa linda.

  • Wow... my friend just recently informed me of her... She's like the female Jeff Mangum

  • what is so unique about music is how something so personal, and so difficult to convey in words or express in general, can affect complete strangers such as myself, to a point of such movement that i feel like crying.

  • I was happy that day. Strange to see this now.

  • another show I missed, crap.

  • press 6 and cry.

  • year after year i come to this page to see this video. in my opinion, this is the best song ever made, and this the best video online.

  • @wibba pretty much same thiung I do

  • Amazing performance, whatever has lead to her changes in style and abilities, it's unfortunate that the power and rare beauty exhibited in this performance has been lost. Also - Dirty Three never got the credit they deserved for what they lent to this album and her performances of this time. They are the unsung heroes here.

  • Cat Power is still an amazing musician, but i do think smoking has changed her voice. When i saw her a couple years ago, she smoked through the whole set (literally onstage), and had to end early because she throat was bothering her. It was still a good show, just nowhere near as raw and beautiful as this performance.

  • lol I thought this was going to be Accept cover :D

  • fuck she makes me think of a female version of kurt cobain.(at his best tho)

  • @grungetograve so, girls think that kurt was sooo fkn sexy?

  • @lobis19 well, i cant say that, coz im not a girl, but i will admit he's not bad looking(not like i'd fuck him or anything, i think me and him could of been best friends, for sure) tho i do know alot of girls who do think he's sexy, but that has nothing to do with my comment of her reminding me of him. tho i do think she is sexy, therefore female virsion of kurt is sexy to me. i dont know if that answears your question...maybe i should just keep my comments to myself.

  • @grungetograve now i understand you very well, surely in their way to sing and express, even movements, under my view, they look very similar. now about Cat, I like girls that are sexy just by the way they are, without necessarily showing their body or acting. Thanks for your answer, specialy refering to this subjective matters, and sorry for my english.

  • @lobis19 hehe, yes indeed, i love girls who are actualy interesting, they dont try to compensate for something they dont have, coz they just are, themselves. everyone has that power of being themselves, but most are afraid to express it. and that distroys their individualism, and eventualy are unable to be themselves because they're to used to acting. its a shame, but thankfuly for catpower and nirvana(and tool, blind melon..etc) they teach how to be yourself, no matter what others say.

  • @grungetograve yeah so true!

  • after seeing this for the first time, i wrote the best song of my life. this is just oh so beautiful.

  • i am, i am crying.

she lets me feel every terrible thing.

  • I wish I could favourite this over and over..

  • yup...add to favorites

  • I was at this show. Chan played the entire show with her hair in her face to keep the demons away and quell her stage fright. Bottom of the Hill is a dreadful club, with the bar in earshot of the stage and access to the bathrooms and smoking area requiring people to walk back and forth at the side of the stage. Those not directly in front of the stage talked through the entire set and shouted drink orders over the music. But it was a great show when one could concentrate.

  • @spekinewicz i would travel a thousand miles to have seen this show. sad that people were that way....

  • pretty intense

  • as of 12.14.2010, 15 ppl don't have a soul.

  • Comment removed

  • @sijran happy, engaging, and emotionally-healthy alcoholic Chan Marshall is alive and well though and puts on better shows for it

  • @bklmsoul True, but that would be great if she could put so much soul into her songs now. Unfortunately, many examples show that it seems hard to be happy and passionate :/

  • if music could cryout in anguish...this would be it...so fucking beautiful...I love cat power

  • emo kids? are you kidding, asshole?! take a class of music and then after talk about music. Cat Power is a very important singer and this video is the most perfect exemple of rocks 90'. Fuck off, man.

  • There is a beauty in sick sadness. A metal heart that i cant hide.

  • It's my birthday and I'm spending it alone again- partly because I want to...

I love Chan Marshall. God this performance is fucking amazing and this song is incredible

    Fantastic

  • i don't like this video. i adore, i love it with my whole life and soul.

  • Fucking emo-kids!

  • i wish she would still sing like this..simply amazing, gave me chills.

  • Where can I find this entire show?

  • does anyone know what kinda guitar is she playing here?

  • @michalshanny silvertone 1448 ;)

  • Skull Crackin Version Cat !!

  • @SatansMajesty I second that Mia, love Cat!! Kisses Susie x

  • @Ghostorchid2 Hey hey Sweet Susie !!~ Have heard "The Cat" do so many versions of this tune.. but this is so raw and perfect makes me cry when I watch her pain as she performs it !! Def. one of my favorite videos ! Much love Sister ! Mia xxx

  • @SatansMajesty She gives so much of herself..I have loved her long-time.."Raw" that is most defo the word for this version...Regards..Susie xx

  • @Ghostorchid2 you are so right sweet susie

  • @Ghostorchid2 i love you sweet susie -- muahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  • @Ghostorchid2 i third that sweet susie I LOVE YOU SO MUCH

  • @Ghostorchid2 kisses back to you sweet susie

  • Viva The Cat !

  • @SatansMajesty yes yes viva the cafe baby

  • oh sooo much better than the 2008 letterman performance!!!!!!!

  • I'm thrilled :) this is beautyfull

  • szkoda ,że cat power zmieniła swój styl

  • @wyslannikszatana Wyslannikszatana? milo mimo wszystko, ze ktos z Polski jej slucha

  • Chan didn't lose her ambtion when she got sober...But i do think she lost her pride, and humility without pride is simple a tool. I hope she gets her old sound back.

  • *-*

  • Ha pasado de ser una cantautora lesbiana, con aspecto de Kim Deal en sus peores momentos, a ser un pibón que engatusa por todo.

  • I like how she sing , it sound like she meaning every word she saying

so I feel her , it hard to find an artist who can make you feel what their singing about

  • When she begins "so your fortunes" chills run up my spine. Very moving performance.

  • You can hear the strength of her emotion in this song. Just beautiful. Love you, Chan. :)

  • As far as the old Chan/ new Chan goes, when somebody is in such a state and creates beautiful art, it's a chance occurrence. It just happens. Be thankful that there are people around even able to channel that in the first place.

    Incredible performance regardless.

  • @okremington Thanks for saying this. Many people go off into the "deep end" and DO NOT come back...if you know what I'm saying.

So, I'm just glad that she's able to give us more music. People, fans especially, just aren't thankful sometimes and I swear I don't understand why! You honestly want someone to suffer in order for you're very own listening pleasure??? Grow up.

  • I wish I had a chance to see this person perform. I saw Cat Power in 09, expecting to see this person. I was so dissapointed with a indie, one gloved, skimpy woman who didn't play instruments.

  • she was in a very very bad place when this was filmed....yet such beautiful art

  • I once was lost but now i'm found was blind

    But now I see you

  • Losing the star without a sky

    Losing the reasons why

You're losing the calling that you've been faking

    And I'm not kidding...

No one can write like her...thanks for the great song.

  • beautiful just beautiful...

  • This is so fucking amazing. I've loved this woman and her music since I was 15, and she really is one of the few musicians who I can say that my feelings havent changed towards.

  • You can feel an aura of sadness and misery around her, but on this night, and amongst all those troubles, she nailed it like the very best could, incredible.

  • congratulations to everyone who was there that night. that was the most special moment in human history.

  • LOVEEEE HER. Beautiful.

  • one of the most original and talented musicians performing today.

  • Skull Crackin' Version

  • Scull Crackin Version!!!!!

  • She still alive?

  • @wankfactor Very much so

  • @rutwhit7

  • This song is so amazing and cat power is truly the best vocalist to sing this song. Anyone can appreciate this song and its singer. Love it

  • @emitwsb david bazan (pedro the lion) does a ridiculous cover as well

  • muito bom esse video.

  • oh my god this video seriously helped me survive my first semester in college crammed in a small space, depressed, hiding inside during a fucking frost bitten winter in chicago. i think that was also the time i mourned for the old chan, for THIS, but i think it was just because i could relate to her here and not her now at the moment, healthy, happy. i listened to that live performance of lived in bars again once i was more mentally sound, and i think i finally understood.

  • *if you really call yourself a fan, then you'll appreciate everything she does. And as a fellow human being, I'd rather Chan be happy and sober than drunk and miserable. But I know how you all thrive on the misery of others. ugh.

  • @klutzyblonde8716: I know, I feel the same way about Chan and her music. A real fan should at least *try* to understand the reasons why Chan does what she does. If ya know what I mean. ;)

@Echobelly10: lol about the "channeling Neil Young" - could you explain precisely please?

  • @klutzyblonde8716

    Hell yeah!

I know music is a big part of people's lives...but if people want someone to be miserable for the sake of good music...thats just fuckin stupid , some things are just more important than music....and one of them is someones well being.

And by peoples comments you'd think she'd lost all her talent...she's still one of the best musicians around.

  • @klutzyblonde8716 can i give you a billion thumbs up please. she's a god. don't be angry when i marry her sorry bud.

  • @klutzyblonde8716 If you have a preference for a certain "type" of Chan, then what does that say about you? It's beautiful for people to express themselves fully in any state of mind they may find themselves in. Don't go about being a self righteous little prick by saying people thrive on the misery of others. I suggest you get out of your little bubble, and experience the world for what it is, then you come back and appreciate/acknowledge the feelings of others.

  • ugh. you all disgust me. new chan, old chan...she's just HERSELF, ok? Regardless of what you may have been told, music is actually for the artist. It's a means of self expression, of therapy, of coping, of transforming. Yeah maybe Chan made some great music while she was struggling with her addictions. Lots of great artists have made "great" music while going through the shittiest moments of their lives. If you

  • I miss the old Chan so much... I'm glad that she's feeling better, but there's something lacking in her music now...

  • but there iis something new which is amazing

    old/new chan is amazing anyway

  • I wish I could have been at that show. I only started listening to Cat Power a few years ago.

  • cool!)

  • how are some humans just this incredible?

  • I think she's channeling Neil Young, but I love it.

  • gave me chills

  • I liked her better when she was depressed and alcoholic. She lost talent now that she's kissing Jude Law and modelling for Lagerfeld :( (no, I'm not jealous at all :D)

  • That's a pretty selfish approach

  • her music was much better back in the day, the last one being you are free, now she seems to have adopted an extremely breathy singing voice which sounds, at least to me, a little unpleasent to listen too. though I am happy to see her in a healthier happier state.

recently in an austrilian interview she stated she was going back to her roots for the next album(solo) so hopefully there will be more of a melancholic sound (sounds horrible saying that lol)

  • i totally agree with you

  • givin' me goosebumps and shit..

  • this video is so beautiful, always makes me cry. she sings with so much emotion, god!!

  • kurt cobain!

  • looking like Curt Cobain

  • thats what i was thinking too

  • I'm almost crying. Fuck.

  • You aren't the only one. The pain in her voice is so raw it makes you want to flinch.

  • @edielover I am crying. Fuck.

  • oh, chan...

  • amazing!!!

  • Es tan talentosa, y su voz tan hermosa :D:D:D

She's so talented and beautiful her voice is :D:D

  • Is She Playin' An Olden "Silvertone"? Beautiful Guitar, Love The Sound She Makes With It! Viva "The Cat"!!~

  • You were right! I love her voice!! TY...

  • @MarLas420 no. shes playing a danelectro 63.

  • @MarLas420 ignore that, im wrong

  • "The Cat"s Word's Rock.. Literally!~ :)

  • yep...words rock !

  • skull-crackin version

  • Skull~Crackin For Sure! But Then Again Everything "The Cat" Does Cracks Skulls.. Much Love For Chan Marshall!

  • Fantastic - I love her voice, I came across it for the first time when I was watching Juno - and I heard her version of Sea Of Love. I didn't know who she was but I was literally blown away and had to find out who sang that song. After that I searched everywhere for stuff by her. Never looked back! =)

  • very painful and beautiful.

    my favourite version..

  • stunning performance.

    the voice reeks southern pain.

this is when I loved her work.

when it was true and grainy.

sung from the guts and down below.....

  • i may have to call this grunge???

  • badass guitar!

  • A little like Kurt Cobain ^^

But whatever, she's adorable as always :)

  • and i dig it

  • its a good look though!!!

  • never heard this song. I love it!

  • Jim White at the drums :) He is with her now too.

  • metal heart is probably my favorite song. from any band or performer. its magic. its mysterious and crawls into my bones and reverberates around and then comes back to the surface of my skin, tingling it. i love this era of chan marshall. this song is the soundtrack of my life.

thanks so much for uploading this.

  • She's a much better artist nowadays!

  • Comment removed

  • i love her.

  • This is the most beautiful thing I have ever heard in my life.

  • this is just...

    wow

  • my favourite from cat power-for ever

  • Cat Power rocking the Dexter Romweber silvertone! Great!

  • This was the first song I ever heard from Chan. It was played in a movie called 'Picture Claire' with Juliette Lewis and Gina Gershon (great movie by the way) and I fell head over heels in love with that song. Anyways, found the name of the song, name of the artist and became a die hard fan of that woman ever since. That was over 8 years ago, and to this day Metal Heart still remains my absolute favorite song she ever did...nothing compares.

I love you Chan. You are a wonder to behold.

  • omg i was at this show. thanks for posting! love to relive it!

  • wow

  • dOES ANYBODY KNOW WHAT THE SONG SPEAK ABOUT?

    ...ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL ...

  • One of the best...

  • i dont if she is touring all over the globe, but she is coming to south america in a couple of months, maybe after that she is going to do more gigs if she hasn't already promote jukebox

  • i miss when she did music like that. so raw so awesome

her music has lost that rock touch to it!

  • I don't think so, I checked her official website and it didn't say anything about any tour coming up soon. Next time she does tour though I will try to go

  • I love this song! And Beck plays that same guitar too
